CAROL LaFAYE (WINGATE) FISHER
Carol Lafaye (Wingate) Fisher, 85, the youngest daughter of Ralph Mason and Lourinda Gertrude (Current) Wingate, was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Nevada, and passed from this life on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs.
After attending rural country schools in Vernon County, Carol was united in marriage to Louis Fisher on March 6, 1938, in Nevada. After their marriage Carol worked for a time at Pratt-Whitney while Louis was in the military. Later she worked for the Kroger Grocery Co. Due to Louis' job, he and Carol moved to follow his career, living in Kansas City, Leavenworth and even for a time in Arkansas. Due to health problems that plagued him later in life, he and Carol decided to retire to the Indian Springs area where they built a beautiful home on the Osage River.
Carol was a member of the First Christian Church in Nevada, but attended the Schell City Christian Church for many years while living in the area.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Wingate, and his wife, Violet, Schell City; two nephews, Richard Thornton and his wife, Mary Etta-Bella Vista, AR, and Linford Thornton and his wife, Dorothy-Columbia; several cousins; other relatives and many friends. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters - Juanita, Vadis and Olive; and three brothers - Barnes, Wayne and Don.
Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Lewis, Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City with Pastor Marvin Jamison officiating. Musical selections were provided by Anna Mae Hillsman and Diane Eslinger. Pallbearers were John R. Hoagland, Sam Vantellman, Ervin Goodman, Terry Smith, Russell Morerod and Marvin Jamison. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery in Nevada, (Vernon County). Funeral services were under the direction of the Lewis, Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Antioch Cemetery Association in care of the funeral home.
Donald R. Brown
Donald R. Brown, 79, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 30, 2001, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Henry County on April 3, 1922, the son of Asa and Effie Davis Brown.
Don retired to El Dorado Springs after being employed with Sheffield Steel for a number of years. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, on June 16, 1985; his parents; two brothers and three sisters-Virgil, Bob, Mary , Nadine and Lucille. He is survived by nieces and nephews- Annie Steward of Dixon, Howard Johnson or Houston, TX, Goldie Gilcrest of Independence, and June BanCamp of Liberty.
Services were held Friday afternoon, Nov. 2, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
FREDRICK A. COOPER SR.
Fredrick A. Cooper Sr., 69, Springfield, formerly of Golden City and El Dorado Springs passed away at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 in Woodland Manor, Springfield.
He was born Aug. 31, 1932, to Jess and Mary Cooperrider Cooper in Crisp, MO. He was a farmer and dairyman. Mr. Cooper was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lockwood.
Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his former wife, Ann Cooper, El Dorado Springs; a son, Fredrick A. Cooper Jr. and his wife, Debra, Springfield; a daughter, Dian Bettis and her husband, Douglas, El Dorado Springs; four grandchildren-Douglas and Brandy Brandell and Billy and Melissa Cooper; one great-grandchild, Dylan Cooper; two sisters, Lena Murray-Greenfield and Melba Trent-Lockwood.
Graveside services were held on Friday, Oct. 19, with Rev. Elton White officiating under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut, Springfield.
HELEN JUNE (HICKMAN) JONES
Helen June (Hickman) Jones, daughter of William Floyd and Ruth Lee (Fleeman) Hickman, was born June 1, 1919, in Cedar County and passed away Oct. 22, 2001, in El Dorado Springs.
Helen was united in marriage to B. Rex Jones on Jan. 24, 1937. To this union three sons were born-Barkley Hickman, Rex Bradley and Calvin Leon.
Proceeding her in death were her parents, her husband and one grandson, Kevin Leon Jones.
Helen is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law - Barkley and Belva Jones-Stockton, Bradley and Nadine Jones, El Dorado Springs and Leon and Burnetta Jones, Stockton; her grandchildren - Jana and Earl Holder, Jerico Springs; Ron and Jill Jones, Springfield, Kelly and Wayne Milnes, Branson; Kim and Bill Haver, Stockton; Stacey and Darin Preis, Columbia; and Susan and Charles Lee, Misawa Air Base, Japan; her great-grandchildren-Joshua Holder, Shawnna, Ryan and Kristen Jones; Nicholas, Harrison and Thomas Milnes. She was looking forward to the birth of her eighth great-grandchild, which is to be born to Stacey and Darin Preis later this month. She is also survived by one brother-in-law, Ola Jones and one sister-in-law, Delpha Berning, El Dorado Springs.
Helen was saved and joined Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in February 1947 where she attended as long as her health permitted.
Helen will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Edgar Lavurn Lutes
Edgar Lavurn Lutes was born on April 22, 1912, south of Roscoe, in St. Clair County to Maude Lutes Schriner. He was an only child. He passed away on Tuesday evening, Oct. 30, 2001, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs.
After living in St. Clair County for 30 years, Edgar was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV, as an airplane machine gun mechanic for the next 30 months.
In January 1942, he and Edna Keith were united in marriage. To this union was born a son, Clayton, and a daughter, Nadine.
Edgar, after being discharged from the Army in the mid forties, returned to their farm south of Roscoe. He farmed and raised cattle for the next 10 years. He and his wife, Edna, then decided to return to Las Vegas to work and raise their children. Edgar spent the next 20 years working on the construction of and the day-to-day maintenance of golf courses at Las Vegas' largest resorts.
Upon his retirement in 1975, Edgar and Edna moved to El Dorado Sprigs, first living in town, then purchasing a farm south of Dederick and moving there. During his retirement years, he raised cattle at both the family farm south of Roscoe, and at their home south of Dederick, where he and his wife of 59.5 years resided.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Edna; his son, Clayton Lutes, and his wife, Dianna; his daughter, Nadine Bayard, and her husband, Dennis, his grandson, Damon Wasden, and his wife, Kym; his granddaughter, Cara Kirby, and her husband, Wayne; great- grandchildren, Drake and Dane Wasden and Caylee and Cabria Kirby, all of Las Vegas, NV.
Service were held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Bill Clevenger officiating. Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Interment was in the Love Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Lloyd Simmons, Larry Brown, Jim Terry, Richard Watts, Bruce Blackburn and Paul Daniels.
FAY IRENE JULIAN
Fay Irene Julian, 71, found peace and went to be with God on Oct. 27, 2001, after a courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. Fay, born March 22, 1930, lived a life that personified unselfish giving and love as a dedicated wife to Harold, her husband of 51 years. They lived in Independence until 1991 and then retired to their home at El Dorado Springs. She celebrated with him in joyful times and supported and comforted him during difficult times. She gave him “all her love, all her life”.
Fay was a bedrock of love and commitment to her two children, Beverly Ahring and Rick Julian, pledging herself daily to them. She showered her children with affection and encouragement. She was a confidante and fun-loving best friend. She immersed herself into the life of her grandson, Jason Ahring, standing as an example of what grandma's are supposed to be.
Fay was a loving sister to her siblings-Coy Cargill, Valice Cargill, Mervin Cargill, Irvin Cargill, Ivan Cargill and Melva Wallen, all of Stockton, Arlin Cargill, El Dorado Springs, Winoma Brown, North Kansas City and Zelia Houston, Shawnee, KS.
Fay worked at Sears and Roebuck for 26 years, retiring in 1987. She was an active member of the Rockwood Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
She embraced her family and friends with her smiles, soothed them with her touch, strengthened them with her kind spirit and impacted them forever with her unconditional love. In turn, when her last battle came they returned that love and commitment to her. Fay was a Christian and loved her Lord and Savior. She was our gift from God and we are forever grateful that He honored us with her presence.
In a world with far too many takers, Fay was a true giver. Her legacy lives on, for she permanently sealed her love within us. She's finally gone home, though she'll live forever in our hearts.
Services were held Tuesday morning, Oct. 30. at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. James Coleman officiating. Interment was in the White Hall Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bob Ahring, John Julian, Charles Wallen, Frank Fox, Ken Houston and Jerry Miller. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Hunt and Gene Alexander.
Opal Schiereck
Opal Schiereck, 61, was born on Jan. 26, 1920 in Brunswick. She passed away on Oct. 30, 2001 in Nevada.
Opal was preceded in death by her two husbands. Opal and Robert (Bob) Scott shared 27 years together before his death from cancer. Opal and Edgar (Ed) Schiereck shared 17 years together before his death. Besides her husbands, Opal was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Annie Davis and three brothers - Leroy, Ottis (Bud) and Virgil (Dick) Davis.
Surviving Opal on this sad day are many loved ones who will miss her and keep her always in their hearts - one daughter, Marilyn Blystone, and her husband, Cecil, of El Dorado Springs; two granddaughters, Robin Anderson and her husband, Mark, and their three children, Stefan, Trenda and her daughter, Sydney and Heather and her three children, Sierra, Chelsea and Ian, all of Nevada: her granddaughter, Lee Ann Stukesbarry, and her daughters, Shelby and Megan. This makes Opal the first in a line of five generations, with five great and four great great grandchildren. She was Granny to many children no matter the relationship to her. Opal is also survived by three sisters and one brother, Jane Iberg, California, Peggy Vausbinder and her husband, Phillip, Kansas, Dixie Wood and her husband, Charles, California and Bobbie and his wife, Barbara, Oklahoma. Opal is remembered by 31 nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews throughout her family and many many friends.
Throughout her long life, Opal's home has always been open to care for many loved ones. The people she helped will never forget her kindness and generosity.
Services were held Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4, at the Hackleman Chapel. The body was cremated and interment will be in the Taberville Cemetery.
CAROLYN M. VOLB
Carolyn M. Volb, 69, Jerico Springs, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at her home. She was born on March 5, 1932, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Bennett of Pennsylvania.
Carolyn retired from J & B Industrial Finishing in 1991.
On July 17, 1950, she was united in marriage to Joseph Volb. To this union were born one son and four daughters.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Joseph II; one daughter, Joanne; one sister and one brother. Survivors include her four sisters and one brother; her three daughters and sons-in-law-Carole and Rick Kilpatrick, Pennsylvania, Kelli and Russ Mann, Jerico Springs, and Wendy Volb, Milford. Carolyn is also survived by 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Greenfield Cemetery at Jerico Springs with Bob Martin officiating. Interment was in the Greenfield Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
