CLIFTON HAMBY
Clifton Hamby, 94, passed on to his Heavenly reward on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs. He was born the second son of C.J. “Jud” and Minnie Hamby on Sept. 13, 1907.
Clifton was born in a half-dugout home on an original homestead in the Panhandle of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Territory, a few miles northwest of Texhoma, OK. He attended public schools and graduated from Guymon, OK, high school in the spring of 1926. He later attended Panhandle State College in Goodwell, OK. He assisted his parents on their farm in Oklahoma and later in Missouri when the family moved from the Dust Bowl in 1935.
Clifton married Faye West McCollom on Nov. 9, 1941, a union that lasted 58 years and nine months until Faye passed away. He continued to live at their farm home with his daughter, Ella Mae, until his death.
Clifton became a Christian early in life and was baptized into the Baptist Church at Guymon, OK. After moving to Vernon County in 1935, he became a member of the Montevallo Baptist Church and was a teacher, Sunday School superintendent and an ordained deacon until his death.
He loved his family very much and dedicated most of his life to them. Preceding Clifton in death were his wife, Faye; his parents, C.J. and Minnie Hamby; three brothers-Guy Hamby, J.S. Hamby and Charles Hamby.
He is survived by two children, Wayne McCollom and his wife, Marie, of O'Fallon, IL and Ella Mae McCollom of the home; two grandsons, Kyle McCollom and his wife, Christy, Kevin McCollom and his wife, Dottie; four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Surviving him also are six siblings: two brothers, G.W. Hamby and his wife, Marjorie, Higginsville and V.G. Hamby and his wife, Betty, Raytown; four sisters - Vera Green-Sacramento, CA, Georgia Baker, Cheyenne, OK and Audrey West and Myrtle Boultinghouse - both of El Dorado Springs; nine nieces; nine nephews; many great-grandnieces and nephews; and a host of friends and loved ones.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Montevallo Baptist Church with Rev. John Nichols officiating. Musical selections were provided by Mary Lynn Winey. Interment was in the Virgil City Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Kyle McCollom, Kevin McCollom, Charles Boultinghouse, Don Boultinghouse, Leon Steward and Kent Henry. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Lehman, Paul Snyder, Earl Boultinghouse, Alan Boultinghouse and G.W. Hamby.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Men's Bible class of the Montevallo Baptist Church.
NEVA ETHEL ELLERMAN MESSICK
Neva Ethel Ellerman Messick, 85, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Monday afternoon, Nov. 5, 2001, at Community Springs Nursing Home. She was born on June 11, 1916, in Cedar County the daughter of Clarence Franklin Ellerman and Lena Ethel Nicholas Ellerman. Neva was a life-long resident of the El Dorado Springs area.
On May 12, 1943, she was united in marriage to Lee Messick. To this union was born one daughter, Joyce, and five sons-Gary, Larry, Dennis, Kenneth and Randall.
Neva was a loving wife and mother always putting her family first. Neva spent several years working for International Shoe Company and Dunbrooke Shirt Company before entering retirement, which she enjoyed with her husband. She enjoyed providing many wonderful dinners and family gatherings always providing unconditional love for her family.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Starkey and her husband, Jim, El Dorado Springs; four sons - Gary and his wife, Barbara, El Dorado Springs, Dennis and wife, Toni, El Dorado Springs, Kenneth and his wife, Liesa, El Dorado Springs and Randall and his wife, Anna-Nevada; one daughter-in-law, Charlotte Messick, El Dorado Springs; grandchildren-Shelly, Brenda, Jeff, Lisa, Tara, Kevin, Kendall, Larry, Thelma, Randi, Melanie, Megan and Andrew; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Fern Ellerman, El Dorado Springs; an aunt, Zephie Ellerman, El Dorado Springs; three sisters-in-laws-Agnes Smith, Nadine Messick and Virgie Messick - all of El Dorado Springs; numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
Neva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee; one son, Larry Gene Messick; one brother, Otha Ellerman; and one sister, Lorene Sumner.
Services were held Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. James Coleman officiating. Interment was in the Love Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
EUNICE OMA FLETCHER ZENER
Eunice Oma Fletcher Zener, 88, passed away on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, 2001, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. She was born on Nov. 23, 1912 at Caplinger Mills, the daughter of George and Nora Fletcher.
Eunice was united in marriage to Edward Henthorn on Aug. 29, 1925. He preceded her in death. She married Karl Zener in 1957 and he passed away in 1960.
Eunice was married at an early age, but she was a wonderful caring mother for her three children. Her hobbies were embroidery, sewing and working in her yard.
Eunice resided in El Dorado Springs until 1948 and then lived in Nevada until her health failed. Her church preference was the First Baptist in Nevada and she attended when possible.
Preceding her in death were her son, George William Henthorn; a daughter-in-law, Christine Henthorn and three great-grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Frank Henthorn, Oceanside, CA; her daughter, Marie Norman-El Dorado Springs; two step-daughters, Karleen Lent-Nevada and Betty; five grandchildren - Carol Norman-El Dorado Springs, Betty Homan, Orlando, FL, Don Norman, Sublette, KS, Bill Norman, Hespenia, CA and Edward Henthorn, Garden City; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Bill Clevenger officiating. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
DORIS MAXINE DUNAVIN
Doris Maxine Dunavin, 86, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Sunday morning, Nov. 11, 2001, at Community Springs Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 16, 1915, in Saxton, PA, the youngest of six children born to Charles and Alice Horton Homan.
Maxine graduated from high school in 1934 and in 1937 she graduated from nurse's training. She practiced her nursing off and on for 37 years, retiring in 1974.
She was united in marriage to Corbert F. Dunavin in West Plains on Dec. 1, 1942. They had been married for 41 years when Corbert passed away on Feb. 19, 1983.
Over the years, the Dunavin's moved around due to Corbert's job, but ended up on a farm in Collins. After Corbert's death, Maxine built a home in El Dorado Springs, where she resided until her health failed.
Besides her husband, Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings. She is survived by two sons, Michael-El Dorado Springs and Charles-Jones, OK; one daughter, Kathy Wells-Odessa; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Hackleman Chapel with Pastor Johannes Brann officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church.
MARGARET G. BOWLIN
Margaret G. Bowlin, 88, Nevada, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 7, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born July 20, 1913, in Meadow Grove, NE, to Micah Dickerson James and Sarah Elizabeth Bartee James. She married Harry Benjamin Bowlin in 1945 in Omaha, NE. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bowlin was born and raised in Nebraska. She graduated from high school in Tildon, NE. She graduated from nursing school as a registered nurse from the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, NE. From 1940-1945 during WWII she was administrator of the Glen L. Martin Health Care Facility located at what is now Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. She later served as administrator of hospitals in Aledo, IL, and Sigourney, IA.
She lived in El Dorado Springs for a number of years before moving to Nevada in 1972. She worked at Nevada State Hospital as Health Care Coordinator for 35 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Nevada and a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the church. She was also a past member of BPW, past president of the District 13 Missouri Nurses Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Missouri Mental Health Association. She was a member of the Nevada Garden Club and the Nevada Quilting Club.
Survivors include one son, Richard Carl Bowlin, Nevada; four sisters - Eva Bell Epp, Augusta, KS, Betty Beckley, Central City, NE, Virginia Tufte, Beverly Hills, CA, and Sally Glidden, Sagus, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Millard Wheeler James and John William James, and three sisters - Oneita Mae Larson, Mary Ann Boucher and Kathryn Elizabeth Miller.
Services were Sunday, Nov. 11 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with Pastor Robin Reeves officiating. Interment followed in Clintonville Cemetery, El Dorado Springs.
Florence Marie Best
Florence Marie Best, 90, died at Washoe Village Care Center in Reno, NV, on Oct. 29, 2001.
She was born March 15, 1911, to Wesley and Alice Sisco in the rural area near Norwood. In 1945 she and her family moved to Kansas, returning once again to Missouri in 1950 to make their home on a farm near El Dorado Springs. In May 2001, she went to Reno, NV, to live with her daughter.
She loved the outdoors, enjoyed her garden and many flowers, as well as walks through the timber looking for wild blackberries and black walnuts.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Dave, in 1972.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Earnestine and Lacel Bland; two granddaughters, Cheryl Crawford and Sandy Schulze; two grandsons, Kenneth Bland and Kelly Bland; and seven great-grandchildren, all of Reno, NV.
Cremation was under the direction of Reno Memorial and a private family service was held in Reno, NV. There will be a graveside burial service at the Lonestar Cemetery at Mountain Grove, MO, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, under the direction of the Craig, Hurtt and Bradley Funeral Home in Mountain Grove. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.
ELMA LILLIAN PAGE
Elma Lillian Page, 88, was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Benton, KS, to William Anton and Ella Pearl Page. She passed away at 2 p.m. on Nov. 15, 2001 in the Northwood Hills Nursing Home in Humansville.
On June 12, 1930, Elma Lillian Braun was united in marriage to James Vallie Page. To this union six children were born. She lived in the Roscoe area for 40 years and later moved to Osceola where she lived for 20 years.
Elma was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, William and Ella; one daughter, Juanita Haselton; one brother, Paul Braun, and his wife, Delores; and two sisters, Doris Curmode and Barbara Montgomery.
Elma is survived by two sons, James Page Jr.-Osceola and Richard Page, Humansville; three daughters-Esther Wells, Portola, CA, Charlotte Wallace, Colony, KS and Shirley Nichols, Edward, MO; three sisters-Mary Brandon, Wichita, KS, Wilma McKinney, Mulvane, KS and Pat Pierce-El Dorado Springs; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Services were Sunday, Nov. 18, at Sheldon Goodrich Chapel with Pastor Don Roe officiating. Music was by Gail Ingle. Casketbearers were Gary Braun, Jim Nichols, Steve Wallace, Gary Wallace, Dale Wallace, David Wallace, Gene Wallace and Ernest Wallace. Honorary casketbearers were Richard Carter and Tadd Barnett. Interment was in the Benton Green Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.
