JOHNNIE LEROY MCCULLICK
Johnnie Leroy McCullick, 73, was born on Sept. 30, 1928, near Roscoe and passed from this life on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. Leroy was the oldest son of John and Lorena Ellerman McCullick.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 48 years, Edith, of the home; his son, Johnnie, of the home, who was Leroy's pride and joy; another son, Otis, of Missouri; six grandchildren-D.J., Tasha, Leroy, Cheley, Natasha and Timmy; three brothers-Leo McCullick and his wife, Joan, Bob McCullick and his wife, Jolene, and Wayne McCullick and his wife, Linda, all of El Dorado Springs; three sisters-Wanda Worthington and her husband, Wayne, Leila Jones and Faye Amick, all of El Dorado Springs; two special sisters-in-law, Barbara Barger and her husband, Albert, and Loneta Curtis, all of El Dorado Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leroy accepted Christ as his Savior on Feb. 12 in the hospital. Bro. James Coleman asked him if he would liked to be saved. He answered, that he would. The ones in the room prayed with him and he accepted the Lord.
Leroy, Edith and Johnnie liked to get in the van and drive. There aren't many big or little places in Missouri that they haven't seen. Leroy, Edith and Johnnie have raised dogs for several years and he loved to get the Big Nickel to see where the dogs sales were going to be. Leroy worked at Witt Printing for approximately 30 years.
He was a very devoted family man, always checking with his brothers and sisters to see if they and their families were doing alright. Leroy was a dear husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle. He will be dearly missed.
Services were held on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, at the Church of God (Holiness) with Rev. James Coleman and Rev. Leland Trussell officiating. Musical selections were provided by Joe and Faith Trussell. Interment was in the Love Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Lyle Bland, Kyle Bland, Ronnie Bland, Wayne Worthington, Bobby McCullick and Jerry McCullick.
H. OLEN BARRITT
H. Olen Barritt, 90, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital. Olen was born on March 24, 1911, the son of Herbert Harrison Barritt and Myrtle Tuder Barritt.
On March 5, 1932, he married Ruby Clark, who survives of the home. They enjoyed almost 70 happy years together.
Olen was baptized at an early age and was a long time member of the Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers-Howard, Bertie, Lloyd and Lawrence. Survivors in addition to his wife, Ruby, include his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Myrle Nitsche, El Dorado Springs; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kim and Kevin Knoll-Fort Collins, CO, Kirk and Laura Friend, Lindenhurst, IL and Kent and Dina Friend-Kansas City; twin great-granddaughters, Natalie and Nicole Friend-Kansas City; his two sisters, Lorene Hartline-Stockton and Belva Poston and her husband, Earl-Bolivar; many beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.
Olen's work included employment by M.F.A. and the International Shoe Company. He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He loved a neat farm and always strived toward that goal. Olen was famous for his hard work and honesty.
Services were held on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 23, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Warren Hall and Rev. Jeffrey Conner officiating.
Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Carl Woodford, Glenn Tuder, Charles Sumner, Ken Culbertson, Lural Mays and Don Sanders. Honorary pallbearers were Howard Barritt, George Barker, Russell Marquis and Cletis Leonard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Free Will Baptist Church.
PRUDY MARGARET GRINDSTAFF PREIS
Prudy Margaret Grindstaff Preis, 82, the oldest daughter of Henry Bell and Esta Elizabeth Grindstaff, was born on May 6, 1919, in Holdenville, OK. She passed away on Feb. 22, 2002, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital.
Margaret, as most knew her, was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; one sister, Florence; one niece, Georgia Byrd; two nephews, Robert Byrd and Jimmie Lee Groves; and two brothers-in-law, George Byrd and Don Groves.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Bernadette Berning, and her husband, Daniel-El Dorado Springs; four grandchildren-Richard Dayton-Kansas City, Brenda Novelli and her husband, John-Glen Carbon, IL, Michael Dayton and his wife, Aubrey-Victorville, CA and DJ Berning-Camarillo, CA; four great-grandchildren-Lauren, Emily, Christian and Ashley; two sisters, Helen Belle Byrd-Tennessee and Henrietta Elizabeth Groves-Colorado; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday morning, Feb. 25, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Doug Houdyshell officiating. Musical selections were provided by Brenda Hill. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Richard Dayton, John Novelli, Jake Kenney, Barry Berning, Denny Berning and Melvin Smith. Honorary pallbearers included Michael Dayton, DJ Berning, Rick Casey, Michael Hill, Stan White, Sean White and Tex Gates.
MAXINE ELLIOTT
Maxine Elliott, 88, Weaubleau, passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Northwood Hills Care Center, Humansville.
Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker and had lived at El Dorado Springs prior to moving to Weaubleau. She was born at El Dorado Springs, the daughter of Lillie (Saylor) and James Richard Elliott Sr.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Virgil City Cemetery with Rev. Robert Walton officiating under the direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland.
Survivors include a sister, Velma Robertson-Springfield and a sister-in-law, Marguerite Elliott-Marionville.
JANIE GARVER
Janie Garver, 96, daughter of Albert and Isabelle Wade Devenny, was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Clinton. She passed away Feb. 21, 2002, at the Appleton City Manor Nursing Home.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Carver on Feb. 9, 1927. To this union, three children were born. She was raised in the Roscoe area. In 1943 they moved to a farm near Rockville in the Osage community where she lived the remainder of her life.
Janie faithfully attended the Church of God (Holiness) in Appleton City as long as her health permitted.
Janie loved to make quilts and sew for her grandchildren. She was a very loving, caring and patient mother and grandmother. When you needed her she was always there.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; one son, Glen; two brothers, Robert and Jim Devenny; two sisters, Mildred Hettinger and Lula Dickson, and one son-in-law, John Oberly.
She is survived by one brother, Bert Devenny, Osceola; one son, Earl Garver, and wife, Elnora, Humansville; one daughter, Clara Belle Oberly, Rockville; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Garver, Rockville; 12 grandsons; one granddaughter; 26 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Church of God (Holiness), Appleton City with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Music was by Chris Heiserman, Mary Ann Crowder and Patricia Ashley. Casketbearers were Tommy Garver, David Garver, Jerry Oberly, Steve Oberly, Lowell Garver and Earnie Garver. Interment was in the Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.
DURL F. GILBERT
Durl F. Gilbert, 75, was born in St. Clair County near Collins, on June 11, 1926, the son of Perry and Autne Thompson Gilbert. Durl passed away on Feb. 23, 2002, after a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Autne Gilbert; four brothers and two sisters.
Durl grew up in the Brush Creek and River View Area. On June 29, 1945, he was married in Ft. Scott, KS, to Betty Lou Gresham. They were the parents of four children - Donis, Dennis, Janice and Douglas.
Throughout his lifetime he held various jobs including farming, cooking at Wheeler Cafe and 27 years at the International Shoe Company. As a youth, Durl enjoyed fishing, hunting and swimming. In later years, he loved to garden and work in his wood shop. His greatest pleasure was making wooden items for his children or gathering his garden produce to share. He especially enjoyed Sunday evenings after church when all of his children and grandchildren would come over for “pot luck.” The grandchildren lovingly called him Poppy.
Durl accepted the Lord as his Savior on Father's Day, June 20, 1999, and attended the Church of God (Holiness) as long as his health permitted.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of nearly 57 years; his children, Donis and Steve Banks, Dennis and Sherry Gilbert, Jan and Randy Bland and Doug and Betty Jo Gilbert. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Karen Sibley, Mike Banks, Shelley Johnson, Chris Gilbert, Nick Bland and Ashley Gilbert; eight great-grandchildren - Chasdity, Breann, Shelby, Kate, Madison, Abbe, Brittany and Tiffany; five brothers-Paul and Ann Gilbert, Gene and Louise Gilbert, Norman and Yvonne Gilbert, Lynn and Sue Gilbert and Larry and Marsha Gilbert; two sisters, Vernice and Harvey Cain and Irene Bryant; and a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Church of God (Holiness) with Pastors Joe and Leland Trussell officiating. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Mike Banks, Chris Gilbert, Nick Bland, Kirk Sibley, Chuck Johnson and Dennis Daughtery. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Gilbert, Norman Gilbert, Gene Gilbert, Lynn Gilbert and Larry Gilbert.
Memorial contributions may be made to the El Dorado Springs Christian School.
ARNOLD (PETE) HEITMAN
Arnold (Pete) Heitman, 83, Lincoln, NE, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002. He was born in Byron, NB, on March 6, 1918 to Albert and Martha Heitman.
He was formerly a farmer in the El Dorado Springs area.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughters and son-in-law-Cindy and Kurtis Kinney-Central City, NE, Tammy Clift; sons and daughters-in-laws, Steve and Gayle-Manhattan, KS, Scott and Suzie-Oakland, IA; brothers-Erick-Superior, NE and Merlin-Byron, NE; sisters-Ruth Meyer-Hebron, NE, Evelyn Schwartz and Dorothy Peterson-Lincoln, NE; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Burial was in Grace Lutheran Cemetery at Fairbury, NE.
