LESTER (TUFF) BERT ALUMBAUGH
Lester (Tuff) Bert Alumbaugh, 76, Springfield, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Cox Medical Center South, where he went to be with his Lord after a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Lou Alumbaugh; his parents and a brother, Norman. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; a son, Jerry Alumbaugh, and Reva Weaver-Lake Tapawingo, MO; a daughter, Sandy Findley, and husband, Brian-Olathe, KS; two stepsons, Gary Humble-Springfield and Charles Humble-Charlotte, NC; a sister, Doris Jackson-Nixa; brothers, Don Alumbaugh and his wife, Norma Jean-El Dorado Springs and J.C. Alumbaugh-Auburn, CA; and sister-in-law, Thelma Alumbaugh-Scottsdale, AZ; grandsons - Rayn Alumbaugh and wife, Sherrie-Blue Springs and Austin and Spencer Findley-Olathe, KS; one great-granddaughter, Courtney Alumbaugh-Blue Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
He leaves many friends who will miss his smile and witty nature. He enjoyed country music and going to dances at the Eagles Club and to Branson music shows.
He retired from General Motors in 1980 after 31 1/2 years of services.
Services were Monday, Jan. 14, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence (the corner of 39th St. and Hwy. 291). Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery in Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to the Leukemia Foundation.
BILLIE NEWTON PACE
Billie Newton Pace, 74, son of John Newton and Cora Ellen (Davidson) Pace, was born July 23, 1927, in Pacetown and passed from this life on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at his home in El Dorado Springs.
A longtime, house painter, builder and antique dealer, Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps after he had gotten out of school. After his military duty Bill worked as an electrical lineman in the southern United States but keeping El Dorado Springs as his home base. Eventually he returned home to stay where he started a house painting business that continued for more than 20 years. In his spare time, Bill built and remodeled homes. After he semi-retired from the painting/building business, he began to deal more with antiques owning a shop in both El Dorado Springs and Schell City.
As a young man, Bill was united in marriage to Doris Jean Mays. To their union three children were born. Doris Pace passed away on Dec. 12, 1978, at her home in El Dorado Springs. On Dec. 12, 1980, Bill married Lillian Lavilla Jennings. Together they enjoyed the antique business as well and going to auctions and doing yard work. For many years, they refinished furniture together. In 1997, they moved from their home in the country to town where they were living at the time of his death.
Aside from his first wife, Doris, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian, of the home in El Dorado Springs; two sons, Jim Pace and his wife, Joyce, of Nixa and Billy Pace and his wife, Paula, of Panama City, FL; one daughter, Jeanne Hoagland, and her husband, John, Schell City; one step-daughter, Peggy Westhoven, and her husband, Gene, of El Dorado Springs; eight grandchildren - Jeneva Powell, Angela, Mac, Katie, William and Jesse Pace and Spencer and Drue Hoagland; two step-grandchildren, Gina Bachand and Brent Westhoven; and one step-great-grandchild, Samuel Westhoven; cousins; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Church of God (Holiness) in El Dorado Springs with Rev. Leland Trussell officiating. Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Pallbearers were John M. Hoagland, Gene Westhoven, Darl Mays, Tony Nimmo, Russell Morerod and Bill Swindler. Interment with military honors was in the Love Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, with military funeral rites. Services were under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Love Cemetery in the care of the funeral home.
ROYAL MAE SCHUCHMAN
Royal Mae Schuchman, 90, Nevada, formerly of St. Louis, passed away on Jan. 11, 2002, at Lakeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lamar. She was born on July 8, 1911, in Hutchinson, MN, the daughter of John and Gladys Dwinnell Sedgwick. Royal was one of four children.
She graduated from the Roosevelt High School Minneapolis, MN. Prior to her retirement she worked as an office manager for several companies in St. Louis.
Royal resided in St. Louis until moving to Nevada in 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Schuchman; her son, Paul Sedgwick Killmer; two step-daugthers, Mary Carter and Bernice Cody; one step-son, Jess Charles Schuchman; one brother, Grand Sedgwick and one sister; Portia Turner.
Survivors include her two sons, David D. Killmer and his wife, Nadine-Nevada, Jonathon E. Killmer and his wife, Linda-Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren, including Renne Hackleman of El Dorado Springs; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous friends in St. Louis and Nevada.
Services were held Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, at the Methodist Church in Nevada with Rev. Steven Barth and Rev. Renee Hackleman officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
JAMES (JIM) ROSS COSTELLO
James (Jim) Ross Costello, 56, El Dorado Springs, was born in the Naval Air Station Hospital, Alameda, CA on April 25,1945, the son of Ted and Margaret Costello. He departed this life on January 10, 2002.
Jim attended Forest Grove country school, El Dorado Springs, and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1963. Following graduation he worked on a missile system installation crew and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. After honorable discharge he spent many years as an over the road trucker.
Jim's real love was working with his hands and he spent many hours working on anything that had a motor. He also spent hours in the timber cutting wood. He loved to fish and liked to listen to country western music.
He is survived by Beth Hendrickson of the home; one stepson, Russell, and wife, Tracey; and a grandson, Russell Thomas; five brothers-Terry and wife, Susan-Stockton, David and wife, Patricia-Mesa, AZ, Brian and wife, Lori-Queens Creek, AZ, Shawn and wife, Jean Marie-Olympia, WA and Kevin and wife, Jamie-Stockton; one sister, Mary Cox, and husband, Frank- El Dorado Springs. Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, Jan. 14 at the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Krudwig officiating. Pallbearers were his brothers and brother-in-law.
Interment was in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
GEORGE LLOYD GREEN
George Lloyd Green, 86, Taberville, passed away at St. Johns Regional Health Center, Springfield, on Jan. 13, 2002. George was born in Jerseyville, IL, on Sept. 24, 1915, the son of George Wesley and Susan Fulton Green.
George was married to Vivian Schmidt on Sept. 9, 1990.
He loved the farm and enjoyed fishing. He was employed by Westinghouse Co. and several other companies over the years as a draftsman.
George was preceded in death by his father and mother; one brother, Everett Wesley Green; and two sisters, Frances E. Woods and Leah V. Bush. Survivors include his wife, Vivian, of the home; one sister, Helen Laschover, St. Ann, MO; a step-son and wife, Clifford and Sharon Hawn, El Dorado Springs; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Hackleman Chapel with Bro. Howard McPeak officiating. Pallbearers will be Elmer Abbott, Delmar Martin, Ed McKinney, Dean Lingengfelter, Louis Jett and Tom Jett. Interment will be in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
DORA JANE 'DJ' HAYNES
Dora Jane `DJ' Haynes, 64, El Dorado Springs, departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, to be with the Lord. She died at home surrounded by her family.
She was born July 18, 1937, to the late Clarence Foreman and the late Phoebe Withrow. D.J. graduated from Walker High School in 1955. She married Franklin D. Haynes on April 27, 1957.
Frank and D.J. owned and operated Haynes Variety for 23 years in El Dorado Springs where “variety was the spice of life”. She enjoyed the daily challenge of meeting someone's needs and framing others' memories. D.J. made many friends and acquaintances there. She served as an inspiration to many and her life was a testimony to what a wife, mother, a grandmother and friend could be.
D.J. was a member of the First Baptist Church, El Dorado Springs, the Gideons International Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. As a 22-year survivor of cancer, she was a member of the “High Hopes” support group.
Her influence will go far and she will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. She leaves behind her husband of nearly 45 years, Frank Haynes, of the home; daughter, Catherine Hissink, and husband, Tom, of Nevada; and daughter, Sharon Elkins, and husband, John, of Ozark; four grandchildren-Emily and Claire Hissink, Adrienne and Mitchell Elkins, who were the lights of her life; her sister, Alice Beaty, of El Dorado Springs; two brothers, Russell Lee Foreman and Charles Foreman, both of Walker. D.J. had numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Sheldon Funeral Chapel in El Dorado Springs, with John Nichols officiating. Interment followed at Newton Cemetery, Nevada. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Gideons International, First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or to High Hopes.
ALBERT HERMAN MORLAN
Albert Herman Morlan, 87, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the Stockton Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Kenneth Morlan-El Dorado Springs; four daughters-Kathryn Jones-Stockton, Jane Snavely-Iola, KS, Joy Stephens-Gardner, KS and Vickie Greenwood-Adair, OK; two brothers, L.A. Morlan and Delbert Morlan, both of El Dorado Springs; four sisters - Maybel Preston-Joplin, Velma Burns and Cleo Brandon-Stockton and Francis Pinkman-El Dorado Springs; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services are pending under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
