Darryl Wayne Perkins, 40, Harrisonville.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at the Atkinson Funeral Home.
RUBY NADINE LEONARD
Ruby Nadine Leonard, 48, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Tuesday evening, Jan. 22, 2002. She was born on July 17, 1953, in Kansas City, the daughter of Harold and Frances Dutcher Leonard.
Ruby loved working with her plants and flowers. She cherished and loved being there for family and her daughter, Koren. There was never a stranger to her, for she would talk to everyone. Ruby had an open heart and touched many people's lives. She was a loving daughter, mother and sister and will be missed greatly.
She is survived by her daughter, Koren Lusk, Fort Smith, AR; her parents, Harold and Frances Leonard, Taberville; her brother, David Leonard, Taberville; her sister, Karen Fast, El Dorado Springs; six step brothers and sisters, Marianna Houston-Oak Grove, Virginia Willmon-Kansas City, KS, Lloyd Leonard-Neosho, Fern Ayers-Kansas City, Herbie Leonard-Kansas City, and Claudine Mitchell-Peculiar; nieces; nephews; other family and a host of friends.
Services were held on Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2002, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Doug Houdyshell officiating. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Frank Doty Jr, Kevin Fast, Paul Willmon, Tom Heathman, Leonard Ketterman and B. J. Jacks.
DAVID WILMER SMITH
David Wilmer Smith, 90, El Dorado Springs, was born north of Virgil City, on Sept. 14, 1911, to Thomas Lewelyn and Elsie Williams Smith. He departed this life on Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, at Community Springs Care Center in El Dorado Springs.
On Dec. 5, 1931, Wilmer was united in marriage to Jessie Mildred Barker, To this union was born a daughter and twin sons. Jessie preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1999, after 68 years of marriage.
Wilmer graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School in the class of 1930. After school, he farmed and worked at Producer's Grain Company. In 1941, he worked at North America building the B25 Bomber. In 1944, he became a test pilot.
After the war, Wilmer owned Marshall Auto Stores in Pleasant Hill and Holden. In 1952, he opened Smith's Variety in El Dorado Springs for 12 years. In the late 50's, he served as an El Dorado Springs city councilman and served as mayor of El Dorado Springs from 1962-1964. Wilmer remodeled and built several houses in the area. From 1973-1981, he enjoyed raising registered Angus cattle.
He and Jessie traveled in 48 states, Canada and Mexico. His pastime was gardening and had great pride in his roses.
For several years, Wilmer served on the board of the POPS Museum. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church until his health started to fail. He served as a deacon for about 50 years.
Besides his wife, Jessie, Wilmer was preceded in death by an infant son, his mother and father; and a brother, Ernest Smith. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Nina and Leo Markham-El Dorado Springs, and Leroy and Carlene Smith-Kernersville, NC; four grandchildren and their spouses-Mike and Robin Markham-Jefferson City, Dennis and Melissa Markham-El Dorado Springs, Jeff and Sue Smith-Lincolntown, NC, and Teri and Rodney Trask-Walkertown, NC, seven great-grandchildren-Amy Markham, Zach Markham, Heather Smith, Justin Smith and Dylan and Syndey Trask; one great-great-grandchild, Christian Rogers; one sister, Mildred Eslinger and her husband, Martin-Nevada, brother-in-law, George Barker, and his wife, Ruth-El Dorado Springs; sister-in-law, Norma Smith-San Diego, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
IRVIN L. KENNEDY
Irvin L. Kennedy, 83, - El Dorado Springs, passed away on Friday evening, May 31, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City. He was born on April 30, 1919, in Fort Scott, KS, the son of Jake and May Carter Kennedy. Irvin was raised in the Fort Scott area and graduated from high school there.
Irvin had worked for Burlington Manufacturing, later was self employed as a carpenter and had retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in Kansas City. He moved to El Dorado Springs 12 years ago. Irvin enjoyed being outdoors and was very active. He loved animals, enjoyed fishing and loved to eat. His family was very important to him.
In 1995, Irvin accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Jon Neal, who looked like Irvin. Survivors include his daughter, Jeannette Neal, and her husband, Jim, of Harrisonville; three grandsons - Jimi Neal, Jeff Neal and Jerry Neal; and six great-grandchildren - Sheena, Travis, Justin, Jacob, Caleb and Jacob Aaron.
Services began at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Steve Estep officiating. Musical selections were provided by Faith Trussell. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Scott, KS, under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
ARTHUR ELLIS MINOR
Arthur Ellis Minor, 83, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Thursday morning, May 30, 2002. He was born in Ione, OR, the son of Ellis Rush Minor and Grace Emmaline Van Vactor Minor.
Arthur moved with his parents as a young boy from Oregon to Hollister. He attended the School of the Ozarks. While a teenager he learned to make Ozark Como pottery from the originator in Hollister. Arthur continued making and selling pottery until he went into the Army. He served his country during World War II in the South Pacific for four years.
On Nov. 13, 1943, he was united in marriage to Gabrielle Goddisson. Arthur met his wife, whom he called Gay, in Australia and they were married there. They eventually took up residence in Astoria, OR where their son, John, was born. The family later moved to Salem, OR.
Until his retirement, Arthur was employed by Nabisco as a salesman.
His interest included serving his community. He started the Salem Outreach Shelter, volunteered many hours to Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice, was involved in the Neighbor to Neighbor Mediation Service and planned many Boy Scout programs. He also provided leadership in the Explorers which involved back packing and mountaineering experiences for young men and women. He was an active member of the Community of Christ Church, where he lived, until his health deteriorated.
His hobbies were always connected to serving his fellow human beings, be it taking Boy Scouts on float trips or growing fabulous vegetables in his many gardens.
Arthur came back to Missouri to be of help to his sister and family and to make one last horse ride over the former Sheep Ranch near Hilda, MO.
He will leave a big empty place here in Missouri among family and friends and also with all his dear friends that have kept up communication with him and his wife over the years.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Van Minor - Hollister. Survivors include his wife, Gabrielle Minor, of the home; his son, Dr. John Ellis Minor, and his wife, Patricia - New Jersey; one granddaughter, Miranda Grace Minor; two sisters, Louise Murdock - Santa Barbara, CA and Calista Mae Waite, and her husband, Gerald - El Dorado Springs; nieces, Dr. Mary Jeanae - Lamoni, IA, Allis May Davies - Ward Cove, AK, Carol Lee Whitehurst - Santa Barbara, CA, Janet Murdock - Annandale, VA and Grace Barrera - Nampa, ID; nephews, Gerald Joseph Waite - Coeur `D Alene, ID and Alma David Waite - Grandview; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will begin at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 5, at the Community of Christ Church with Bob Conwell officiating under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.
The family suggests contributions to Local VFW 257 instead of flowers.
JEWEL MAY HARRIS TEAGUE
Jewel May Harris Teague, 100, was born on April 21, 1902, on the John W. Tidgwell homestead northwest of Stockton in Cedar County, MO. She departed this life June 1, 2002 at Christian Health Care, Nevada.
She was the first of two daughters born to William James and Elizabeth Riley (Bessie) Tidgwell Harris. As a young woman Jewel was saved at Hazel Dell Missionary Baptist Church.
Jewel attended grade school at the old Center School northwest of Stockton and then Parker School. She went to high school two years at Caplinger Mills, attended a summer term at Springfield Teacher's College, now Southwest Missouri State University, and began teaching when she was 17 years old. She taught two years at Pleasant Ridge School, only two months at Union Hall School and two years at Forest Grove School. While teaching at Forest Grove, she stayed with the Galen and Lily Teague family down the road from the school house. That was where she met her future husband, Willie Oscar Teague. Willie and Jewel were married at her parent's home at high noon on Nov. 18, 1923. The ceremony was performed by Bro. Luther Tucker, the same preacher who performed Willie's parents wedding.
After their marriage, Willie and Jewel began farming the Liston place southeast of El Dorado Springs. In 1936 they sold the operation and moved to Macon where they operated a Western Auto store for about 1 1/2 years. From there they purchased a farm north of Fort Scott, KS where they spent 37 years before retiring to El Dorado Springs in 1975.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Willie, who died in 1995 after they enjoyed almost 72 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Harris Platt, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eldon and “Bertie” Teague and a niece, Norma Teague Barger Ullrich.
Her surviving family include the children of Eldon and “Bertie” - Nelda Potter - Garnett, KS, and her family; Lendon - Austin, TX, and his family; Neale, and his wife, Gayle - El Dorado Springs and their family and several members of Norma's family. After “Bertie” died, Eldon married Fern Durrett who became a loving sister-in-law to Jewel. Also surviving is her cousin, Mahlon Goodwin, of Salem, OR.
While residing in the nursing home, Jewel appreciated and enjoyed the visits from the many friends she made throughout her lifetime. She always seemed to have a cheerful attitude. She will be missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Thompson and the staff of Christian Health Care for their compassionate care shown to Jewel.
Services were held Tuesday, June 4, at Hackleman Chapel with Bro. Bobby Budd officiating. Musical selections by Ron Alumbaugh included “Just Beyond the Sunset” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Interment was in Hazel Dell Cemetery under direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Carl Woodford, Wendell Allen, Don McCormick, Ronald Elliott, Craig Teague and Jon Petts. Honorary pallbearers were Horace Coale, Virgil Caldwell, Louis Osborne and Don Simpson.
WINNIE CRABTREE BROWN
Winnie Crabtree Brown, 97, of Fayetteville, AR, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at her home.
She was born March 21, 1905, at Pea Ridge, to Houeston Crabtree and Frances Elizabeth Cash Crabtree. She attended school at Summit School located between Bella Vista and Pea Ridge. She lived in California for 10 years before moving to El Dorado Springs, where she was owner and operator of The Yardage Shop from 1951 - 1971.
She was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin “Doc” Brown in 1986; her parents; two brothers, Frank Crabtree and Charlie Crabtree; three sisters, Mina Price, Pearl Givens and Mae Mitchell; and a son-in-law, Paul Vaughn.
Survivors include one daughter, Wanda Jean Vaughn - Fayetteville, AR; three grandsons, David Vaughn, and Craig Vaughn, both of Fayetteville, AR, and Eric Vaughn - Goshen, AR; one granddaughter, Avis Ruge - Fayetteville, AR; one sister, Hazel Dryden - Pea Ridge, AR; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 2 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at Sisco Funeral Home Chapel in Pea Ridge with Bro. Butch Bolinger officiating. Burial will be in Pea Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation is set for 10 a.m. - 12 noon, Wednesday morning, at the Sisco Funeral Home.
