Gladys Edna Hutchison, daughter of John Fiane Spurlock and Eva Evelyn Currier Spurlock, was born Aug. 2, 1908, in Sweden, Mo., in Douglas County, and passed away on March 28, 2005, in Stockton, at the age of 96.
Gladys was a resident of Stockton for the past nine years. She was a member of the Seymour Church of the Nazarene and a former member of the Ava Highway Church of the Nazarene.
On Nov. 7, 1931, Gladys and Russell William Hutchison were united in marriage in Hartville, and to this union, two sons were born.
Gladys started teaching school at the age of 17 in rural schools in southern Missouri counties and retired from teaching in the Ava school system.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Robert, in 2000, and 11 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by a son, Royce Hutchison and wife, Faye, of Stockton; a grandson, Royce Hutchison Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Royce Hutchison III, Joyce Hutchison, and A.J. Hutchison; one great-great-granddaughter, Autumn Hutchison; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 1, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. John Moles and Paul Buchanan officiating.
Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Terrill officiating.

Sherman Herd, 76

Sherman Herd, 76, of Wapato, Wash., died at home on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.
He was born Feb. 6, 1928, in Douglas County, Mo., to Cecil and Lottie Herd.
In 1946, he married Hazel E. Simpson and in 1952, they moved to Yakima, Wash.
Sherman started work as a can line mechanic for Del Monte Corporation, a job he held until retirement in 1986.
Sherman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Some of his hobbies included gardening, motorcycle riding, raising registered Limousin cattle, brushing his favorite bull, Jed, and traveling in his pickup and fifth-wheel trailer.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; sons, Dallas Herd, of Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Dean (Sue) Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; grandchildren, Shannon Herd, of Wanatchee, Wash., Charlotte Woods, of Astoria, Ore., Heath Herd, of Yakima, Wash., and Risa Stoller-Black, of Richland, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Brittany Herd, Tanner Herd, Summer Herd, all of Wanatchee, Wash., Shae Woods, of Astoria, Ore., and Olivia Stoller-Black of Richland, Wash; and one brother, Bob Herd, of Haysville, Kan.
Preceding Sherman in death were his mother, father, two brothers and one sister.
Memorial services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Open Bible Christian Center in Yakima, Wash., under the direction of Keith and Keith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Sterlin Marsh and Albert Lantrip officiating.
Interment was in Community Memorial Park, Wapato, Wash.
Ralph S. Birdsong, 84

Ralph Shockley Birdsong, 84, left this world to be with the Lord on March 15, 2005, at approximately 7 p.m.
Ralph passed away at Skaggs Community Health Center, Branson, after battling bad health for several years and severe complication from falls in the past two months.
Ralph was born April 21, 1920, to Rev. William S. and Abbie May (Shockley) Birdsong, at Weaubleau, Mo.
He graduated from Collins High School in 1939.
He married Betty I. Goldsmith on Feb. 14, 1940, in Hickory County, near Collins, at the home of his parents.
In 1945, Ralph served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Thompson in the World War II conflict. He came home to his family to farm at Schell City, Mo.
In 1953, Ralph and Betty moved the family of five children to Independence, both going to work for Safeway Stores. Ralph later retired in 1981 from Cotter and Co. Ralph and Betty moved to Cedar Creek to their retirement home.
In 1996, both unable to care for each other, they moved to Bradleyville to live with their daughter and her husband, Glenda and Jim Day, where they both resided until their passing. Ralph enjoyed many years of happy retirement, fishing, hunting, his garden and mostly enjoying his family.
Ralph gave his heart to the Lord at the age of 15, at the Collins Church, and reaffirmed his faith in the Lord in his latter years.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Betty, in 2000; a daughter, Judy, in 1987; a great-granddaughter, Sabrina in 1981; and his parents.
He is survived by daughters, Glenda Day and husband, Jim, of Bradleyville, and Betty "Weezie" Butler, of Dallas, Ga.; sons, Robert Birdsong and wife, Sue, Harrison, Ark., and William Birdsong, of Independence; his sister, Vera Gillespie Adcock, Humansville; his brother, Ervin Birdsong, Snohomish, Wash; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; as well as other family and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at New Mansion General Baptist Church, Bradleyville, followed by interment in Day-Birdsong Family Cemetery, Bradleyville.
Services were under the direction of Kissee-Vest Memorial Chapel, Forsyth.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bradleyville Rural Fire Department.
Emma Louise Hamilton, 94

Emma Louise Hamilton, the daughter of Robert Davidson and Catherine (VonKeller) Davidson was born Oct. 23, 1910, in Okla., and departed this life March 18, 2005, at the age of 94.
Emma was a resident of Ava for the past 12 years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed bingo and reading.
Emma was united in marriage to John Hamilton on July 19, 1932, in Missouri. Mr. Hamilton preceded her in death.
Emma was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include one son, John Gerald Hamilton Jr., North Carolina; two grandchildren, Robert and Daniel; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Corder, state of California; one daughter-in-law, Murnice Hamilton, Ava; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cremation services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Patricia G. Lewis, 69

Patricia "Pat" Geneva Lewis, of Ozark, Missouri, passed away with God and her family at her side on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 after suffering and valiantly fighting esonophilla leukemia for the past six years.
She remained gracious and positive and never lost her ability to enjoy her family and friends and find good cheer at every opportunity. Her hope and salvation was in Christ.
On June 10, 1935, Pat was born in Bemidji, Minn., to Paul E. and Jenny L. (Andrys) Osborne, shortly after her birth her parents moved her family to National City, Calif.
In 1951, she met and married the love of her life, Dave Lewis and to this union, three children were born.
Pat worked in numerous retail fields including JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, El Toro Marine Base, and Disneyland. In 1968, she and Dave moved to Ava, and she began working for the Ava Drug Company and always referred to her position as the best job she ever held. Later, she and Dave decided to open a small grocery store on their farm near Sweden, Mo. In 1978, she and Dave moved to Ozark, and established a real estate title and closing company.
Pat attended Calvary Baptist Church of Ozark and was involved in church activities. She touched many lives in a positive way and will be remembered for the way she invested her life in others.
Pat was preceded in death by her father, Paul Osborne and her infant son, David.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dave Lewis; her son Paul Lewis of Ozark; her daughter Teresa Bruns and husband Randy of Nixa; her mother Jenny L. Osborne of Ozark; her sister Jeanette Pidgeon of Prescott, Ariz.; other relatives, several caring friends, and good neighbors.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with Pastor Dale Brown officiating.
Visitation was from 3 p.m. until service time.
Herbert Allen Wilson, 97

Herbert Allen Wilson, son of William Henry Wilson and Nellie Viola Thompson Wilson, was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Squires, and passed away on March 20, 2005, in Ava, at the age of 97.
Herbert was a lifelong resident of the Squires community. He was a farmer.
On Dec. 14, 1930, Herbert and Neta Brooks were united in marriage in Squires.
She preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 1984.
On Nov. 27, 1990, Herbert and Marie (Turner) Murrill were united in marriage in Thornfield.
Herbert was a Christian and was baptized. He loved his whiteface cattle, working on his tractor and farm equipment, and visiting with his family and friends.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Neta in 1984, four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Wilson, of the home in Squires; three stepdaughters, Wilda Rowe, Squires, Kathy Stout, Sparta, and Nancy Harper, Ava; 10 step-grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Maudie Maylee, Zanesville, Ohio; a very special friend, Jessie Coy; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., today (Thursday) at the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Paul Welch officiating.
Interment will be in the Murray Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association.
Services are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Wilda Pitts Chandler, 98

Wilda Pitts Chandler was born Dec. 23, 1906, in Springfield, to Bert and Rosetta Williamson, where she lived but a few years before returning as a young child to her mother’s childhood home of Ava. Wilda graduated from Ava High School in 1924.
Wilda married Leo Pitts, son of Joseph V. and Maggie Pitts, and three sons were born to this marriage: Donald, Bill and Jerry, all of whom survive.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo, and second husband, Homer Chandler.
Wilda devoted her life to providing for her sons. Working out of the home all of her adult life, she worked almost around the clock for many years, as a clerk in the local Carps Department Store, while also working as the night telephone operator for the Ava Telephone Co. She finished her work career as the receptionist for Dr. C.E. Harlan.
Wilda moved to Kansas City to be near two of her sons in 1992, where she passed away quietly on March 18, 2005.
In addition to her three sons, Don Pitts, Raytown, Bill Pitts, Grand Junction, Colo., and Jerry Pitts, Kansas City, Wilda is survived by five grandchildren, Deborah Beth Hoffman and Kammie Lynn Rucker, both of Grand Junction, Colo., Cheri Ann Crawford, Denver, Colo., Ross Pitts, Kansas City, and Jillian Richwine, Raytown; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation was held at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, at 2 p.m. Monday, with graveside services at 3 p.m. in the Ava Cemetery with the Rev. Lin Stern officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Kansas City Hospice.
Floyd Allen “Pete” Hartley, 86

Floyd Allen “Pete” Hartley, 86, Ava, passed away at 12:45 a.m., Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center where he had been a resident for two years.
He was born May 5, 1918, at Arno, Mo., to Lee and Eva (Wheeler) Hartley.
On May 5, 1939, he married Geraldine Haden, and to this union, one son was born.
Pete was a farmer and a carpenter. He also worked for the Raymond McDaniel Company for 10 years, building farm-to-market roads, and Stafford Appliance Store in Ava for 15 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; both parents; two brothers, Merle and Jack Hartley; and a special aunt, Maudie Neice.
Pete is survived by his son, Leonard and wife, Evelyn, Jamesport, Mo.; a special niece, Nellie White, Springfield; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Hartley, Oklahoma City, Okla.; three nieces; one nephew; other relatives; and many friends.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 21, at the Arno Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating. Arrangements were under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava.
Glenda Jo (Walker) Hall, 67

Glenda Jo (Walker) Hall was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Ava, the daughter of Carl and Opal Scribner Walker. She went to Heaven on April 2, 2005, in Cox Medical Center North, Springfield, at the age of 67.
She leaves behind her loving husband, Harold, with whom she shared 46 years, two daughters, Sheila Scott and husband, Butch, of Ava, and Tracy Hunter and husband, Billy, of Springfield; four stepsons, Clifford Hall and wife, Shirley, Springfield, Larry Hall, Sparta, Jerry Hall and wife, Gayla, Springfield, and Darrell Hall and wife, Joyce, Springfield; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Omar Walker and wife, Helen, Lake Ellsinore, Calif., Jerry Walker and wife, Lydia, Yakima, Wash., and Frank Walker, Port Orchard, Wash. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, and many special neighbors and caring friends.
Glenda Jo was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one infant granddaughter.
She was a member of the Full Gospel Church in Springfield.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Junior Hall and Ronnie Baker officiating.
Burial was in the Dyer Cemetery.
Earl Holbrook, 74

Earl Holbrook, 74, of Ava, died April 1, 2005, at Lafayette General Hospital, Lafayette, La., while enjoying his favorite activity, bicycle riding.
Earl was born June 3, 1930, in San Diego, Calif. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force for 20 years. He served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star.
On Aug. 3, 1961, he married Jacqueline Cotter and with her he had two daughters and a son.
Earl worked for the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier in Cayucos, Calif., for 17 years before retiring to Ava in 1987. Earl loved everyday spent in Ava, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. It was a great honor to him to be Mrs. Dean’s fourth grade class’ “Super Grandpa” each year. Earl had a passion for bicycle riding. He traveled all across this country with his bicycle. Last year he was able to travel to both New Zealand and Australia with his bicycle.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Lillian Holbrook; his wife of 39 years, Jacque; and one daughter, Jodie Holbrook.
Survivors include his daughter, Mandi Carr and her husband, Jerry Carr, of Ava; a son, Kenneth Holbrook and his wife, Tina, of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Joshua King, Cambria King, Michael King and Dawn Carr, of Ava, Amy Bowman and Jerry Lynn Carr, of Hurley, Joseph Holbrook and Clayton Holbrook, of Oklahoma; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Carr and Breanna Bowman, of Hurley, and Madeline Scott, of Galena; as well as many friends in Ava and throughout places he visited.
A memorial service will be planned at the Ava VFW Post with military honors. In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to the Ava VFW.
Arrangements were under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home of Ava.
