Virginia Addy, daughter of Odell Thomas Martin and Haddie S. Robbs Martin, was born on June 12, 1921 in Gaffney, S.C., and departed this life on Dec. 25, 2007 in Springfield, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 13 days.
Eileen Virginia Martin Addy grew up in Gaffney, S.C.
She secretly married Frank L. Addy Jr. at age 17 and kept the secret until after she had graduated. She and Frank were united in marriage on April 15, 1939 in York, S.C., and to this union they were blessed with a daughter.
When World War II started and Frank enlisted, she also immediately enlisted to be with Frank as the war would allow. She enlisted in the WAAC and reached the rank of staff sergeant. She returned from World War II and received an honorable discharge in October 1945. After the war, she and Frank both worked in Washington, D.C. and lived in Maryland. In 1952, they and their daughter moved to farm life in Ava, Missouri.
They operated a dairy and poultry farm south of Ava and like many people of the time worked off the farm. In Ava, Virginia also worked as a secretary for attorneys in the state court system and later with Kraft Foods. She later worked as clerk of court for Judges Quentin Haden and Roger Wall. She enjoyed working in the legal profession. She was a member of the Ava United Methodist Church and was busy in the choir.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, and one sister, Mary White.
Virginia is survived by her daughter and husband, Shirley Addy and Dr. Fred Bouse, Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandchildren, Kimberly Socha and husband, Robert, and Christopher Addyson Bouse and Forrest Alexander Bouse both of Fairbanks, Alaska; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Alexis and Nickolas Aaron Socha; and her half sister, Lucille Bray, Columbus, Ohio.
Service for Virginia is Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with a visitation prior to service from 1 to 2 p.m.
Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery with full military honors by Ava American Legion Post #112 and VFW #5993.
Beverly Witchey, 67

Beverly A. Witchey, the daughter of Kenneth Wilson Robinson and Wanetta Maxine (Redding) Robinson, was born Oct. 9, 1940, in Galesburg, Ill., and departed this life Dec. 18, 2007 at the age of 67 years 2 months and 9 days.
Beverly was a resident of Springfield, for the past 121/2 years. She was employed with Rawlings Sporting Goods in Ava, for many years.
Beverly and Robert "Bob" D. Witchey were united in marriage Aug. 30, 1958 in East Moline, Ill. Beverly and Robert were blessed with three children.
She loved gardening, especially her flowers. Beverly was lovingly devoted to her family.
She attended the Northpoint Assembly of God Church in Springfield.
She was preceded in death by her father, and her husband, Bob.
Her survivors include one daughter, Carrie McIntosh and husband, Jay, Ava; two sons, Ronald Witchey, Moscow, Texas, and Todd Witchey, Livingston, Texas; her mother, Wanetta Maxine Robinson, Springfield; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Mert Seaton, Elida, Todd Jr. and Josh Witchey, and Dean Pierce; one great-grandson, M.J. Seaton; one sister, Shirley Brown, Springfield; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Eddie Cabrera officiating.
Interment will follow in the Whites Creek Cemetery east of Ava.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.
Memorials may be made to the Whites Creek Cemetery.
Jimmie Maxine Merritt, 75

Jimmie Maxine Merritt, the daughter of Jim and Zellar Elliott Engle, was born on Jan. 18, 1932, and passed away with her family by her side on Dec. 17, 2007, in her home in Ava, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 29 days.
Maxine lived most of her life in Ava. She was a homemaker and had also worked at a Licorice Factory in Moline, Ill.
On Aug. 18, 1949, Maxine and William "Bill" R. Merritt were united in marriage in Harrison, Ark.
Maxine was of the Baptist faith and was saved and baptized at an early age.
She enjoyed flower gardening, collecting swans and her pets. Most of all she loved being with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ewell and Clifton Engle; two sisters, Lorene Sears and Oma Catherine Jefferson; and a granddaughter, Grace Merritt.
Maxine is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Merritt of the home in Ava; one son and wife, James and Pam Merritt, Diggins; three grandchildren, Jonathon, Matthew and Patrisha; one brother, Jerry Engle, Ava; a special niece, Rose Zella Myers, Ava; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, several brothers and sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 20) in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Larry Vinson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation is Wednesday, from 6 to 7:00 p.m., in the funeral home.
Peggy Jean Levan, 65

Peggy Jean Levan was born on June 11, 1942, to Glen and Velma (Buchanan) Leckenby, in Garden City, Kan.
Peggy went to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 18, 2007, at 2:30 a.m.
She married Melvin Leroy Levan on Feb. 21, 1961, in Ava. To this union she added 12 children.
She was a loving mother, seamstress, gardener and full-time homemaker.
She gave her life to the Lord in June 1985 and was baptized at Happy Home Free Will Baptist church where she was a member for many years. She also attended Star Chapel and Faith Rock Church. She loved the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Billy, Jack, Donald and Buster; two infant siblings; and sons, Melvin Leroy Levan and Michael Levan.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Levan; Thomas Leckenby and wife, Patty, Mansfield, Velma Jean Levan, Ava, Patricia Thomas and spouse, Ed, of Maryland, Bobby Williams and husband, Gary, of Chadwick, Connie Jagears and husband, Ronnie, of Seymour, Christene Crane and husband, Raymond, of Summersville, Robert Levan and wife, Leslie, Ava, Lorena Diver and husband, Paul, Ava, Geraldine Levan, Ava, and Mitchell Levan, Ava.
She has 25 grandchildren of whom she was very fond.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m., at Happy Home Church with Bro. Paul Welch officiating.
Interment was in Turkey Creek Cemetery.
Mary Doris Emery, 81

Mrs. Mary Doris (Riley) Emery, 81, of Searcy, Ark., formerly of Bradford, Ark., died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at Searcy.
She was born on April 4, 1926 at Drury, Mo., the daughter of Thomas and Agnes (Tetrick) Riley.
Mrs. Emery was a homemaker and enjoyed her soap operas. Her greatest love was her family.
Mrs. Emery was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Gray Emery; one son, Eldon Hatfield; one daughter, Judy Hatfield; her parents; three brothers, Amos Riley, Claude Riley and Glen Riley; one sister, Edith Rackley and one granddaughter, Eara Loftin.
She is survived by three sons, Benjy Emery and wife, Kim, of Newark, Ark., Harold Emery and wife, Michelle, of Searcy, Ark., and Walter Emery and wife, Denise, of Bradford, Ark.; three daughters, Daphene Haliburton, of Newport, Ark., Joanna Ervin and husband, Phillip, of Yucaipa, Calif., and Ada Emery, of Tuckerman, Ark.; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, at Jackson's Newport (Ark.) Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Max Davis officiating.
Interment will be in Oakland Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, 5-9 p.m.
Arrangements are by Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
Marjorie Davis, 79

Marjorie M. Davis, the daughter of Harry Fisher and Olive Irene (Garton) Fisher, was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Scandia, Kan., and departed this life Dec. 14, 2007, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, at the age of 79 years 3 months and 28 days.
Marjorie was a resident of the area for most of her life.
On Nov. 14, 1945, Marjorie and Delmer Davis were united in marriage in Marysville, Kan. Marjorie and Delmer were blessed with six children.
Marjorie was a housewife.
She was a Christian and was of the Baptist faith.
Marjorie enjoyed sewing and embroidering.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delmer; and one son, Douglas.
Her survivors include three sons, Duane Davis, Ava, Danny Davis and wife, Teresa, Ava, and John Davis and wife, Roxann, Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Linda (Suzy) Robertson and husband, Charles, Ava, and Louella Pratt and husband, Larry, Lebanon; 22 grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; an aunt, Dorothy Fisher, Courtland, Kan.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, in the Goodhope Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Huskey officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Goodhope Cemetery.

Lori Cantwell, 70, of Thornfield, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at Hospice House in Mtn. Home, Ark.
Mrs. Cantwell was born Oct. 23, 1937, in Yemassee, S.C., the daughter of Daniel and Jewell (Blocker) Moore.
She and Merl Cantwell were married Jan. 19, 1961, in Walterboro, S.C.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Cantwell is survived by her husband, Merl; five children, Greg Cantwell, of Columbia, S.C., Al Cantwell, of Louisville, Ky., Kim Youngblood, Jacksonville, Fla., Denise Guenther, West Plains, and Beth Shoemaker, Beaufort, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mary Connley, Anna Lee Connley, and Thelma Keith, all of Beaufort, S.C., and Dot Powell, of Yemassee, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Randy Cantwell and Al Shoemaker; and one brother, William Moore.
Services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Gainesville.
Charley D. Freeman, 68

Charley D. Freeman, son of Arthur Edwin Freeman and Mildred (Dahlberg) Freeman, was born on Jan. 5, 1939, in Coldsprings, Mo., and passed away with his family by his side on January 2, 2008 in Ava, at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 27 days.
Charley was an independent construction contractor. He was a resident of the Ava community for the past three years, moving from the Denver, Colo., area. He was an Army veteran and served his country with the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964.
Charley was united in marriage to Gloria Colbert and to this union three children were born, Charley Duane, Victor and Eric.
Later he married Artie and to this union, two children, Andrea and Aaron, were born.
Charley was a Christian. He loved fishing and music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Eric Freeman, and an infant daughter.
His survivors are four children, Charley Duane Freeman, Shawnee Mission, Kan., Victor Freeman, Aaron Freeman and Andrea Freeman, all of Denver, Colo.; six brothers, Clifton Freeman, Liberty, Harold Freeman, Windsor, Gerald Freeman, North Kansas City, Donald Freeman, Liberty, and Dewey Freeman and Milton Freeman, both of Ava; three sisters, Judy LeCompte, Eugene, Ore., Carol Tobin, Bolivar, and Nancy Davidson, Springfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial service for Charley was held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Ava Full Gospel Church, Ava, with the Rev. Butch McCleary officiating.
Military Honors were presented outside of the church by Ava American Legion Post #112 and VFW #5993.
Burial of cremains will be in the Brushy Knob Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests memorials to American Cancer Society.
Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
