Doris Bacorn, 84

Doris Mae Bacorn, daughter of Noel Sutherland and Bernice Cooper Sutherland, was born on May 20, 1923, in eastern Douglas County, and passed away on Jan. 16, 2008 in Ava, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 26 days.

Doris was a resident of the Ava community since 1962, moving from San Diego, Calif. She was a housewife and homemaker.

On July 9, 1945, Doris and Ed Bacorn were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union, two children were born.

Doris was a member of the Ava General Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing crossword puzzles and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal's fan and also enjoyed watching any other college sports at all times. She loved being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and her husband, Ed in 1987.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Ed and Jill Bacorn, Ramona, Calif., and Linda and Vann Mitchell, Ava; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Noel and Brenda Dye, Ava, Mindy and Scott Shufelt, Ozark, Cory and Ted Gilbreth, Ramona, Calif., Derek and Nashina Bacorn, Del Mar, Calif., Holly Bacorn, Ramona, Calif., Brandy and Michael Harvill, Ava, Robyn and Robert Bash, Ramona, Calif., Brian Bacorn, Maryland, and Becky and Brad Adams, Ava; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild on the way; one brother and spouse, Calvin and Janice Sutherland, St. Genevieve; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Service for Doris will be held Monday, January 21, at 10:00 a.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating.

Interment will be in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday at 5 p.m. in the funeral home.

The family requests memorials to the donors choice of charity.

Basil V. Spurlock, 88

Basil Vernon Spurlock passed away on Jan. 4, 2008, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield from a sudden illness.

Basil was born on Nov. 12, 1919 in Ava, in the white house across from the public library (2nd house on the right).

In the early 1940s, Basil married Elma Anderson, of Ava, and they are survived by one son, Michael Vernon Spurlock, of San Antonio, Texas.

Also surviving are grandson, Michael II, and great-granddaughter, Ava Marie, also of San Antonio. From Mike Sr.’s marriage to wife, Barbara, are Teresa, Patty, Glenda and Janice.

After Elma passed away on July 24, 1976, Basil married longtime friend, Betty House, on April 24, 1993, 17 years later.

The family got bigger with Betty's kids, Heather Dunn, of Denver, Colo., and Bob House, of Joplin; also Heather's two children, Matt and Regan.

Except for a 2-year stint in Oregon and California, working in the shipping yards during the depression, Basil worked at Norman Rexall Drug, the MFA, Ava Lumber Company, and opened the Corner Store which he owned and operated for over 30 years. He then worked clerking sales for Billy Joe Evans until his complete retirement.

Basil then settled into full retirement down at Squires with Betty, following sports and playing golf with "the 12:30 Bunch"

Survivors include Betty, of the home, and all those kids and grandkids that loved him so much and will forever.

Jim Trent, 73

Jan 10, 2008

Jim Trent, 73, began his earthly life on Nov. 6, 1934, in Pondfork, Mo., with parents Audie and Ocie Almeda "Medie" Duckworth Trent.

He began his heavenly life Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at his home in Brighton, surrounded by his loving family.

After Jim returned from serving in the U.S. Army, he married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Robertson, on Jan. 1, 1956, and this union was blessed with four children.

They later moved to California, where Jim was foreman for the Sherman Thomas Ranch for many years. He loved working on the farm, whether in Ozark County or California. They returned to the Ozarks where Jim worked for Frank Lyons Co. After years of hard work, he was able to retire and have time for his favorite activity, his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Audie and Medie Trent; four brothers, Paul, Roland, Vaughn and Frank Trent.

Jim is survived by his wife, Peggy Ann, of the home; two sons, Randal James Trent and Nicholas Shane (Jackie) Trent; two daughters, Iris Ann Trent and Sarah Skopec; nine grandchildren, Brandi Satterfield, and Caleb, Ryan, Seth, Kathyrn and Kyle Skopec; one great-granddaughter, Allie Satterfield; and two sisters, Ava Stehle and Verna Wolf. He will also be deeply missed by a host of friends and other relatives.

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m., in the Thornfield Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating, with full military honors.

All arrangements were under the direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.

Robert J. Sparkman, 82

Jan 10, 2008

Robert J. Sparkman, 82, Springfield, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, after a short illness.

Bob was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Willard, Mo.

He was a graduate of Springfield Central High School and Southwest Missouri State College.

Bob worked in the banking Industry for 40 years. He was a former resident of Ava, having worked at Citizens Bank, now Town & Country Bank, in Ava.

He was preceded in death by both his parents and a brother, Denzel.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wilma; his daughter, Teresa; his son, Ryan and his wife, Lisa; and granddaughter Stephanie.

Private family graveside services were held Wednesday in Payne Cemetery.

Public visitation was from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Gorman Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Clyde F. Hull, 79

Jan 24, 2008

Clyde F. Hull, of Rockville, Md., passed away Dec. 23, 2007.

He was born July 3, 1928 in Oldfield, the son of Ernest and Fay (Gilbert) Hull.

On May 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Nancy Cocklin of Berwick, Pa.

He served his country in the United States Army and served as an honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Following his service in the Army he was employed by the United States Government Federal Bureau of Investigation for three years. He was then employed with All-State Insurance and retired in 1993 after 40 years of employment.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; three sons, Stephen W. Hull and Mary Fitzgerald Hull, Michael C. Hull and wife, Cynthia, and Douglas Hull; one daughter, Jennifer Levine and husband, Eric; grandchildren Stephen Hull, Christine Flam and husband Paul, Mitchell, Jacob and Keith Levine, Samantha and Ashley Hull, Kim Kay and husband Brian, Rose and Jonathan Hull; one great-grandson Brian Kay, Jr.; two brothers, Wayne Hull and wife, Marlene, of Onsted, Mich., James Hull and wife, Nadia, of Oldfield; and two sisters, Betty Thompson, of Bruner, and Winnie Gann and husband Bob, of Oldfield.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Hull and Henry Hull, and one sister, Mary Pauline Hull.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28, at Pumphrey Funeral Home, Rockville, Md.

Burial followed in Norbeck Memorial Park with full military honors.

Myrtle Hicks, 98

Myrtle Hicks, daughter of Harrison Tetrick and Mary Catherine Driskell Tetrick, was born on May 14, 1909, in Trail, Mo., in Ozark County, and passed away with her family by her side on Jan. 21, 2008, in Marshfield, at the age of 98 years, 8 months and 7 days.

Myrtle was a resident of the Ava community most of her life. She was a housewife and loving mother.

She was married to Otis Collins and to this union eight children were born.

He preceded her in death.

Later in years, she married Rube Graham and to this union, one daughter, Mary, was born. Rube preceded her in death.

On Feb. 13, 1976, Myrtle and Earl Hicks were united in marriage in Marshfield. Earl preceded her in death in 1982.

Myrtle was a member of the Ava Church of Christ. She enjoyed music, working in her flower bed, quilting, reading and cooking for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one brother, Floyd, two sisters, Maude and Lulu, one daughter, Marie Hicks, two sons, Floyd Dale Collins and Don Collins, and an infant child.

She is survived by five children and their spouses, Charles Dean and LaVerne Collins, Fair Grove, Bonnie Haskins, Muscatine, Iowa, Fena and Herb Johnston, Lakeview, Ark., Dexter and Lynne Collins, Buffalo, Iowa, and Mary and Johnnie Crain, Muscatine, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Iva Berry, Drury; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A service for Myrtle will be held today (Thursday, Jan. 24) at 10 a.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home chapel with Brad Smith officiating.

A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. till service time.

Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery.

The family requests memorials to American Heart Association.

Mary Pearl Bellinger, 92

Mary Pearl Bellinger, daughter of Charles and Anna Freeman, was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Henderson County, Little York, Ill.

She went into Glory land on Jan. 15, 2008, in Mansfield, Mo., at the age of 92.

Early in her life, she was untied in marriage to Alvin Bellinger and to this union, two sons and four daughters were born.

Her parents, a brother, a sister, two grandsons and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

In February 2007 she lost her twin brother, Earl Freeman, of Fort Madison, Iowa.

Pearl is survived by two sons, Lloyd Bellinger and wife, Sheri, of Little York, Ill., and Larry Bellinger and wife, Mary, of Monmouth, Ill.; also four daughters, Louise Greer and husband, Don, of Adair, Ill., Linda Thomas and husband, Dick, of Mansfield, Laura Davies and husband, Trevor, of Little York, Ill., and Lillian Gottler and husband, Bob, of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

She was born and reared on the family farm near the Little York and Monmouth area. She was a devoted Christian mother, raising her family and keeping the home running. They lived around the Little York community for many years.

In 1979, she moved to Lancaster, Calif., to be with her daughter, Linda, where she was a day care cook for 13 years at her church. Then in 1994, she moved with her daughter and husband to Mansfield and volunteered her time at the Crisis Center and Friends In Action Intl., until a few months before her home going.

Pearl was a hard working lady, enjoyed her volunteer work and taking care of neighbors and friends. She loved growing beautiful flowers and maintaining them herself. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Memorial services were held at the First Baptist Church in Mansfield at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Friends In Action Intl., Shipping Ministry Expansion Project, PO Box 88, Mansfield, MO 65704, where she volunteered for 12 years.

Loyal David Pruett, 82

Loyal David Pruett was born July 25, 1925, to Alvah L. and Violet Mae (Stafford) Pruett in the Dogwood community of western Douglas County.

He died on Jan. 4, 2008 in the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. after a long illness.

In 1966, he retired from the Army after serving 21 years in the military. David served in five major battles in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served in the Korean War.

While serving in Austria he met his future wife, Margit, a displaced Hungarian immigrant. They were privileged to have shared 53 years of marriage before her death in 2005.

He retired from Southwest Missouri State University in 1987 where he was supervisor of the maintenance department.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margit; his parents; one brother, Johnny, and an infant brother, Paul; and two sisters, Mary Williams and Alice McCullough.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan Margit Jacobs and her husband, Larry, of Springfield; one son, John David Pruett and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Kansas City; brothers, Bill Pruett and wife, Edna, of Nixa, and Aaron Pruett and wife, Bonnie, of Seymour; two sisters, Nadine Barker and Goldie Bryant, both of Seymour; two grandsons, Dr. Zachary David Jacobs and wife, Melissa, of Columbia, and Nicholas Jacobs, of Springfield; two granddaughters, Demetra Gentry and husband, James, of Wichita, Kan., and Monroe Elizabeth Pruett, of Kansas City.

Visitation was Jan. 7, in Greenlawn South, Springfield.

Graveside services with full military honors were held at 11 a.m Jan. 8, in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
