Willard W. Percifield was born June 24, 1934, in Ava, to Blevins and Faye Percifield.
As a child Willard attended the Anchor School in Douglas County. Later, he attended school in Protection, Kan., where he helped his uncle in wheat harvest. After leaving Kansas he moved to Exeter, Calif., where he worked as a migrant worker picking fruits and vegetables.
At the age of 20, he returned to Ava where he met Bonnie Mae Sartor. They were married Dec. 31, 1955, in Mtn. Grove. From this union, they had six children: two daughters, Brenda and Glenda, and four sons, Dale, Randy, Kevin and Kenneth.
Willard enjoyed a variety of occupations throughout his life, from carpentry to farming, truck driving, to owning his own business. Willard and Bonnie lived in Diagonal, Iowa, for many years before moving to Allendale, Mo. They divorced in 1980.
On Dec. 9, 1982, Willard married Kathy Dehart of Grant City, Mo. After spending a short time in Allendale, Willard and Kathy moved to Silvis, Ill., where they lived for 10 years. They returned to Grant City in 1994 where Willard spent the remainder of his life.
Willard Percifield died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, after a long battle with lung disease.
He was preceded in death by his father Blevins Quintine Percifield, his mother Ethel Faye Payne, a sister, Emma Jean Evans, and a brother, Harold Richard (Junior) Percifield.
Surviving are six children and their spouses, Brenda and Gary Smith, Diagonal, Iowa, Dale Percifield, Allendale, Glenda and Pat Schwienebart, Newton, Iowa, Randy and Cindy Percifield, Delphos, Iowa, Kevin and LeAnn Percifield, Redding, Iowa, and Kenneth and Stephanie Percifield, Redding, Iowa ; sisters, Delpha Mulvania, Ava, Lois Percifield, Bettendorf, Iowa, Pauline Stout, Norwood, Eldeen Roach, Tingley, Iowa, and Vivian Perreault, Bettendorf, Iowa; a brother, John Percifield, Davenport, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Mo., with Pastor Len Green officiating. Interment was in the Kirk Cemetery, Allendale, Mo.

Reba O. Hutchison, 85

Reba O. Hutchison began her earthly life on Feb. 14, 1922, at Vera Cruz, Mo., with parents Fred and Elva Souder Livingston.
She began her heavenly life on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at the age of 85.
On Oct. 18, 1938, she married Willard Hutchison and to this union, three children were born, Jerry Dean, Judy and Jackie.
The kitchen table was the focus of her home as she entertained family and friends with food that was prepared with love.
She realized the need for God in her later life and became a member of the Ava General Baptist Church in her latter years. She was accustomed to hard work, whether in the factory or helping Willard drive a truck.
Reba was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Elva Livingston; an infant son, Jerry Dean; her husband, Willard; two sisters, Freda Manis and Melba Bogart; and one brother, Robert Livingston.
Reba is survived by one daughter, Judy Kent and husband, Ed, Ava; one son, Jackie Hutchison and wife, Pat, of Ava; one brother, Fred Livingston; three grandchildren, Scott Davis, Kelly Timpe and Kathy Scott; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; special sisters-in-law, Irma Evans and Joann Livingston; and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted in the Ava Family Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2:30 p.m., with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Billy Joe Evans officiating. Burial followed in the Ava Cemetery, under the direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
Mary L. Caudill, 68

Mary Lavon Caudill was born Jan. 1, 1940, at Roy, Mo., to Fred and Gertie Sanders Barcus.
On Jan. 30, 1959, she was married to Marvin L. Caudill, and on Jan. 30, 2008, she was reunited with Marvin on their 49th wedding anniversary.
A visit to Mary’s home was truly a pleasure, whether to see all her beautiful flowers or to join her in watching all the birds she fed. She enjoyed the beauty in nature all around her. She loved outdoor activities and could often be found mushroom hunting or fishing. She was devoted to her family and it seemed she had the ability to prepare all her family’s favorite foods, from rolls to chicken and dumplings.
During her illness she never complained, and showed a sweet, peaceful attitude to all who visited her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gertie Barcus; her husband, Marvin; and three brothers, Wayne, Glen and Charlie Barcus.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Loretta Engelhardt and husband, Frankie, Lena Robertson and husband, Wes, and Laverna English and husband, Chad; and one son, Jerry Caudill and wife, Tammy; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives.
Memorial services were conducted in the Ava Family Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Janice Robertson officiating. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice or the American Heart Association. All arrangements were under the direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
Sandra Jean Carlson, 48

Sandra Jean Carlson, daughter of Raymond C. and Lila Fay (Fitzgerald) Carlson, was born on Nov. 28, 1959, in Omaha, Neb., and passed away on Feb. 4, 2008, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, at the age of 48 years.
Sandra was a resident of Wasola for the past 3˝ years, moving from the Ava area. She had also lived in California. She had worked as a grocery store manager in California and also worked as a caregiver with Brook Care in Ava.
In 1989 Sandra met her loving partner, Thomas Coffey Sr. in Lake Elsinore, Calif., and to this union, two children were born.
Sandra enjoyed reading, crocheting and caring for people. She loved being with her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving partner, Thomas, and one brother, Jerry.
Her survivors include her two children, Sarah Renee' Coffey, Ava, and Thomas "Tommy" Coffey Jr., Wasola; four brothers, Robert, Bernard, Johnny and Jimmie Carlson, all of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Debra and Denise Carlson, also of Omaha; two aunts, Norma Ingram, Squires, and Lois Weidman, Ava; uncles, Kenneth Fitzgerald, Seymour, Gerald and Cindy Ingram, Squires, Gene and Jo Ingram, Neola, Iowa, Glen and Sherry Ingram, Omaha, Neb., and Ernie Weidman, Ava; close friends, Jerry and Carla Kaiser, Squires, Scott and Denise Pippin, Squires, Robbie Turner and Damon Walker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be Thursday, Feb. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Murray Cemetery, Squires. A visitation will be held before the service Thursday, 9 to 10 a.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Lois L. Lane, 86

Lois Louise Lane, the daughter of Arthur Guthery and Emma (McPherson) Guthery, was born March 5, 1921, in Brown Branch, Mo., and passed away Feb. 4, 2008 at the age of 86 years 10 months and 29 days.
After working in a World War II bomber plant in Kansas City, she moved to Modesto, Calif., where she and her husband Harry owned and operated a taxi company. She retired to Ava but needed to be more active so they moved to Springfield where, for a number of years, they owned and operated motels. A few years after Harry's death, she returned to the West Coast and has lived in Fremont, Calif., since 1981.
Refusing to stay retired, she worked for Motel 6 until the age of 83.
Lois was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Fremont, Calif.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry C. Lane; three brothers, George, Bill and Fred Guthery; and two sisters Grace and Stella Guthery.
She is survived by her children, Lee Adams and Patrick Lane; one granddaughter, Melissa Lane; and one great-grandson, Andrew Lane, all of Fremont Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating. A visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time.
Elda J. McLaughlin, 88

Elda J. McLaughlin, 88, was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Paragould Ark., to parents Lemuel and Hazel Kennedy Owens.
On Feb. 2, 2008 she departed this life in Springfield.
Elda moved with her family from Arkansas to California when she was a young lady where she met Douglas McLaughlin and married him June 23, 1967 in Carson City, Nev.
They moved to the Ava area six years ago.
She had worked at several jobs in California. She was a very talented lady who had many interests. Her cooking was a special treat for her family and friends as she shared many different dishes. She loved to solve crossword puzzles and answer TV game show questions. Her phone calls to chat with friends brought joy and happiness to her friends. She cared very deeply about her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Elda was preceded in death by her parents, Lemuel and Hazel Owens; her son, William Stepp; and sister, Almera.
Elda is survived by her loving husband, Douglas McLaughlin; one granddaughter, Brenna Barbara Stepp; one great-grandson, Owen Stepp; and one great-great-granddaughter, Maya Stepp. She will also be missed by friends she has met in her life’s travels.
Graveside services were held at the Ava Cemetery Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Brad Hudson officiating. The family requested that memorial contributions be made to Gideons International. Ava Family Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
Norma Jean Miller, 68

Norma Jean (Vogt) Miller was born Jan. 2, 1939, to Colonel and Gladys Vogt near Evans, Missouri, and departed this life on Oct. 19, 2007, from a sudden illness.
Norma grew up on a dairy farm located on Bryant Creek and attended Vera Cruz Elementary School and Ava High School.
Norma married Johnnie Miller, their local milk hauler who grew up in the Sweden Ridge area, near Ava. They were married at Gainesville in 1955.
They moved to San Bruno, Calif., and raised their family in the San Francisco Bay area. They celebrated 52 years of marriage in April 2007.
Norma loved being outdoors and enjoyed her beagles, Rusty and Lucy, hunting, fishing, gambling trips with husband and friends, family gatherings, and country music.
Norma is preceded in death by her father, Colonel Vogt.
Survivors include her mother, Gladys Vogt, of Las Vegas, Nev.; her husband, Johnnie Miller, of San Bruno, Calif.; her only child, Johnnie Ross Miller and wife Eveone, also of San Bruno, Calif.; granddaughter, Jennifer Miller, at Stanford Medical School, Stanford, Calif.; grandson, Jake Miller, at Chico State University, Chico, Calif.; brother Joe Vogt (Linda) of Las Vegas, Nev.; nephews Gary (Sarah) and Robert Vogt, of Yuba City, Calif.; lifelong childhood friend, Betty and husband Jack Retherford, of Mount Vernon, Ore.; and special friend, Gloria Radebaugh, of San Bruno, Calif.
Norma’s laugh and gentle heart will be missed by all. She will rest at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Colma, Calif.
Jack M. Richards, 81

Jack M. Richards was born Oct. 13, 1926, the son of Arthur and Lois (Jenkins) Richards, and departed this life Feb. 4, 2008, at the age of 81 years 3 months and 21 days.
Jack was a life-long resident of the Ava area.
He and Irene Bricker were united in marriage on March 13, 1948 in Ava. Jack and Irene were blessed with two children.
Jack was employed with Sentinel Wood Treating plant for several years. After it closed, Jack farmed.
Jack loved being outdoors. He loved listening to gobblers in the spring and fishing anytime. In the fall, deer hunting and riding on his four-wheeler took up his time. He also enjoyed working with Jack Schmidt on the ranch.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Paula Ryan, two brothers, Bill and Marshall Richards, and one sister, Pauline Jenkins.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, of the home Ava; a son, Tony Richards and wife, Lisa, Ava; four grandchildren, Cody and Amanda Richards, Springfield, Rhonda and Tony Hollingsworth, O'Fallon, Rustin and Tina Ryan, Florissant, and Charley Hampton, Ava; great-grandchildren, Braxton Richards, Bryce and Grayson Atchison, Makenzie, Madison and Jacob Hollingsworth, Tyler and Ashley Ryan, and Jacob Nannie; one brother, Francis and Pauline Richards, Ava; a sister, Helen Dobbins, Ava; a son-in-law Ronald Ryan, of Arkansas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 7) at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Vernon Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery. A visitation was held Wednesday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
