Anna Belle Claxton
(November 7, 1923 - November 17, 2011)

Anna Belle Claxton, daughter of Alfred Virgle and Amy Idelia (Royster) Emmerson, was born November 7, 1923, near St. George, Missouri.

She departed this life, Thursday, November 17, 2011, in Hartville Care Center, in Hartville, Missouri, at the age of eighty-eight years and ten days.

On May 1, 1942, she was united in marriage to Woodrow Claxton, who preceded her in death in May of 1978.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kent; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Delvin and Aline Emmerson, Clifford and Katherine Emmerson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Iva and Amos Curtis, and Chlorienne and Walter Curtis; and a niece Karen Curtis.

Anna Belle is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathy Claxton of Hartville, MO; two grandsons, Jason Claxton and his wife, Emily, of Nixa, MO, and Jared Claxton of Branson, MO; nieces and nephews, including Radell and Judy Emmerson, of Mountain Grove, MO, Dixie and Harley Blevins, of Springfield, MO, Dr. Carl and Linda Claxton, of Springfield, MO, Christine and Forrest Reed, of Joplin, MO, Elma Jo and Dean Skinner, Semi Valley, CA, Gordon Emmerson, of Australia, Lynn Curtis, Brent Curtis, Junior Curtis, and Selma Pagac; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Born on the family farm, she attended the Cope School and then the Hartville High School, where she graduated from.

After she and Woodrow were married they moved to Camdenton for a short time and then to Mountain Grove. They purchased the farm on Elk Creek and through the years, she worked along side her husband and was a loving homemaker to her family. In later years, she resided in Mountain Grove until moving to Hartville.

Anna Belle had professed her faith in Christ and was a member of the Pleasant Grove (Cope) Freewill Baptist Church and later attended the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mountain Grove, where she enjoyed her church fellowship. She centered her life around her family. Her care, concern and love for them were always evident.

Her smile lit the room and her keen sense of humor and wit always brought a laugh to folks. She was an avid reader and enjoyed going fishing in her spare time.

Anna Belle was a devoted and loving wife, mother and mother-in-law; was a cherished grandmother; a treasured sister and aunt; and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and cherish the memories she created for her family and many friends. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed but will live on in our hearts forever.

Services for Mrs Claxton will be Sunday afternoon November 20, 2011.

Visitation at 1:00 PM with Funeral at 2:00 PM in Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Hartville, Missouri.

Burial will be in Claxton Cemetery North of Hartville.

Memorial contributions have been sugested to the Claxton Cemetery, and may be left at Holman-Howe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hartville, Missouri, 65667.

Mary L. Blake, 75

Mary was born in Dothan, W. Va., to Delphia and Noel in 1932.

At the age of 7, she and her two sisters lived at Terra Alta due to the TB outbreak. She returned to Fayette County and attended Kingston High School.

She married her sweetheart, Charles Ira Blake, and was a wife and mother of four children.

In 1976, she moved to Longrun where she and Ira had a small farm. She enjoyed gardening and fishing. In 2001, she moved to Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Delphia and Desota Evans; her husband Charles; son Charles L; and sisters Alice and Jewel.

She is survived by her sisters, Shirley and Verna, of Ridgedale; and Brenda, of Jefferson, Ga.; a son Bill and wife, Debbie, of Hill Top, W. Va.; daughters, Regina and husband, Steve, of Niceville, Fla. and Lisa, of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Barbara, of Concord, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mary L. Blake, 75, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in St. Agnes Chapel, Springfield.

Committal services were at 3 p.m. in Smith-Graham Cemetery in Longrun.

Visitation was held Friday in Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home 500 E. Walnut St., Springfield.

Sylvia Freeman, 89

Sylvia Gray Vogt Freeman, 89, a resident of Bettendorf Health Care, Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Ava, passed away Feb. 8, 2008 at the center.

Sylvia Gray Vogt Freeman was born March 11, 1918 in Douglas County, Missouri, the daughter of G. C. and Victoria (McCubbins) Vogt.

Her mother died that same year. Sylvia then grew up in the home of her grandparents, L.P. and Emmaline Vogt of the Vera Cruz and Evans community.

On Oct. 7, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raymond Freeman. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1996.

Sylvia spent her life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, endearing herself to all who knew her. She lived on the same farm for 70 years, prior to moving to Davenport, Iowa, to live near her family following the death of her husband. She was an accomplished seamstress from a very young age, but most of all she enjoyed quilting.

She attended the Evans Church in Missouri and Grandview Baptist Church in Davenport as long as she was able. She enjoyed all the church services offered at Bettendorf Health Care.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce and Lyndon Gheer, of Davenport, Iowa; her sons, Jack and Carolyn Freeman, of Sebring Fla., and Roy Freeman, of East Moline, Ill.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Myrl Cox, of Ava, Pauline Villaneuva and Veria Hughes of Sanger, Calif., and Fern Cantrell of Niangua; and one sister-in-law, Helen Dixon, of Great Bend, Kan.

In addition to her husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, one brother and six sisters.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Freeda Holt officiating. Interment followed in the Brushy Knob Cemetery. Visitation was Monday from 1 p.m. until service time. an be made to the Smith-Graham Cemetery in care of Freeda Garrison, HC 2 Box 2904, Theodosia, MO 65761 or charity of donor’s choice.

Elmer Buel Bartlett, 88

Elmer Buel Bartlett, of Maysville, quietly passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Sunset Home. At his side was his wife of 67 years, Gladys C. Bartlett.

Elmer was born Oct. 29, 1919, in Ozark County to Luther Bartlett and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shipley.

He was the eldest and only son of their seven children.

Elmer and Gladys were married in May 1941, in Ava, and spent most of their early years in the Springfield area.

They moved to Kansas City in the early 1960s and to Maysville in 1970, where they owned an upholstery business. He was a self-taught fiddle player who was affectionately referred to as "the smiling fiddler." In his early years, he played in "honky-tonks" to help support his young family. After moving to Maysville, he played most every weekend at various functions in and around the area and won many fiddling contests. He performed weekly at The Wagon Wheel, in Pattonsburg, for eight years, which was broadcast from KMRN radio station in Cameron.

The two loves of his life were his wife, Gladys, and his fiddle. His most popular request was "The Orange Blossom Special."

He leaves behind his wife, Gladys Bartlett, of Maysville; his three children, a daughter, Audrey Willoughby, and two sons, Gale Bartlett and Curtis Bartlett, and wife Jackie, all of Kansas City; and five grandchildren, Josh Willoughby, Brooke Jameson, Rachel Cauthon, Kristen Wright, and Caroline Storey, all from Kansas City. Also remaining are four of his six sisters, Gladys Keller, of Davenport, Iowa, Leota. McClary, of West Plains, Edith Warrick, of Branson, and Maxine McMillan, of Springfield.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Bram Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation was from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial was in Thornfield Cemetery in Ozark County, where he was born and raised, on Friday, Feb. 8, after a brief graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or DeKalb County Nutrition Center.

Julianne Salgado, 67

Julianne Salgado, daughter of Gloria (Butchke) Graves of Sullivan, Wisc., and the late Lawrence L. Graves, was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Summit, Wisc., and passed away Feb. 6, 2008, in Springfield.

She got her first horse at age 12 which led to a lifelong passion for horses and animals. She was an advocate for animals and people who could not speak for themselves; she did for others without condition.

She was a 4H Club leader with several clubs in Wisconsin, and a mentor to hundreds of youngsters. She was a member of the Ava Saddle Club, the Douglas County Fox Trotter Association, and in Wisconsin, the Kettle Moraine Rough Rider Drill Team. She received a ribbon in Trail Versatility in the 2007 Fox Trotters competition.

Julianne enjoyed traveling, especially with animals, was generous of time and spirit and an attentive mother.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include her loving husband of 49 years, Richard F. Salgado; her mother, Gloria (Butchke) Graves, of Sullivan, Wisc.; two children, Steven Salgado of New Berlin, Wisc., and Lori Gamroth, of Dousman, Wisc.; four siblings, Neil Graves, of Squires, Kathryn McHugh, of Waukesha, Wisc., Colleen Bliffert, of Dousman, Wisc., and Bonnie Pakula, of Sullivan, Wisc.; five grandchildren, Brent, Gregory, Thomas, William, Daniel; and three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Gracie and Richard.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 14) at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Ava. Inurnment will be in Frye Cemetery.

Harrison Edward Shipman, 87

Harrison Edward Shipman ("Harry" or "Ship"), Lt. Col. USAF, Ret., 87, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008.

Harry Shipman was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Tarkio, Mo. to Henry T. Shipman and Delpha B. Breshears Shipman.

He grew up in Ava, Mo. and graduated Ava High School.

Harry attended Drury College, Springfield, Mo. in 1939, and Bakersfield College in 1940. He graduated from U.S. Army Air Corp Cadet School, Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz. in 1941. He served his country with distinction as a fighter pilot and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel at age 24, and first Squadron Commander of the 458th Fighter Squadron. He flew P-51 Mustangs, and among his stations were Panama guarding the Canal Zone and Iwo Jima, escorting bombers and flying fighter missions over Japan. Among his achievements, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one cluster and Air Medal with three oak clusters and several campaign ribbons and unit citations. Also known as "Ship, " Ship continued his military career in the Reserves and retired in 1980.

Harry met Elizabeth "Betty" Cleator in Tuscon in 1941, while Betty was a senior at the University of Arizona. They kept in touch during World War II and married April 12, 1946, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Harry spent 10 years in the Carolinas as an entrepreneur with his father and brothers before moving and accepting a motor freight executive position with Chief Freight Lines in 1956, in Fort Worth, which was to become his life-long home, aside from a few years as a Vice President with Chief in Tulsa, Okla.

In Fort Worth, Harry was past President of Eastside Kiwanis, a member of Meadowbrook Methodist, then First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed his volunteer work, Masonic Lodge 925, 32nd degree Scottish Mason, Moslah Temple Shrine Patrol, Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 32, the Glen Garden Country Club, Colonial Country Club, then Woodhaven Country Club, Petroleum Club, and Carousel Dance Club.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Lt. Col. Leonard Shipman; older brother, Bob Shipman and his parents.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Betty, of almost 62 years; son, Jimmy Shipman and wife, Jana, of Richardson; daughter, Jeannie Hammann, of Dallas; granddaughters, Jacy Shipman and Nicole Hammann, both of Dallas; and grandson, Peter Hammann of Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas.

Celebration of life services: 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park, and visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moslah Hospital Fund, P.O. Box 1320, Fort Worth, Texas 76101.
