Sherman Herd, 76, of Wapato, Wash., died at home on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005.
He was born on Feb. 6, 1928, in Douglas County to Cecil and Lottie Herd.
In 1946, he married Hazel E. Simpson and in 1952, they moved to Yakima, Wash.
Sherman started work as a can line mechanic for Del Monte Corp., a job he held until retirement in 1986. Sherman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Some of his hobbies included gardening, motorcycle riding, raising registered Limousin cattle, and traveling in his pickup and fifth-wheel trailer.
He enjoyed studying the Bible and spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; sons, Dallas Herd, Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Dean (Sue) Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; one brother, Bob Herd, of Haysville, Kan.; grandchildren, Shannon Herd, Charlotte Woods, Heath Herd, and Risa Stoller-Black; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Herd, Tanner Herd, Summer Herd, Shae Woods and Olivia Stoller-Black.
Preceding him in death were his mother, father, two brothers and one sister.
Memorial services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Open Bible Christian Center under the direction of Keith and Keith Funeral Home, Yakima, Wash., with the Revs. Sterlin Marsh and Albert Lantrip officiating.
Interment was in Community Memorial Park, Wapato, Wash.

Virgil Wayne Simmons, 85

Virgil Wayne Simmons, son of James Hiram Simmons and Georgianna Futha Eldred Simmons, was born on April 10, 1919, in Fruita, Colo., and passed away on April 4, 2005, in Ava, at the age of 85 years.
Virgil was a resident of the Ava community since 1992, moving from California. He was raised in Colorado. He moved to California, where he became a general contractor building custom homes.
In 1978, Virgil and Elizabeth Wanda McAfee were united in marriage in Nevada.
After retiring he loved building bird houses and bird feeders. Virgil also was a skilled cabinet maker.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and two step-sons, Richard Stubbs and Danny Stubbs.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Simmons, of the home in Ava; three children, Florene A. Hunt, of Turlock, Calif., Dwight W. Simmons, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Linda D. Aycock, of Modesto, Calif.; four step-children, Gwen Reed, of Ava, Les Stubbs, of Modesto, Calif., and Ronnie and Larry Childers, both of Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; ten step-grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cremation services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, and a memorial service will be conducted at a later date and time in California.
Orbrey (Jim) Shindler, 90

Orbrey (Jim) Shindler was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Almartha, Mo., the son of Enoch Shindler and Hattie (Yates) Shindler. Orbrey died Sunday, April 3, 2005, in Olathe, Kans., at the age of 90 years.
On Nov. 28, 1935, he married Eska Faye James, and the couple ran the family farm in Almartha. They were married for 65 years.
Orbrey was baptized Oct. 6, 2005, with 26 family members present. He faithfully attended church services at Johnson County Nursing Center where he lived.
Orbrey was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also loved baseball, playing bingo, going to sales, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a volunteer for the Wasola Fire Department as well.
Orbrey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eska, on Nov. 23, 2000; his son, Jimmie Ray, on April 28, 2000; a grandson, Michael Leon Roberts; two brothers, Orville and Bill; and two sisters, Ethel and Bernice.
Orbrey is survived by two daughters, Pat Smidt and husband Larry, of Pauline, Neb., and Earlene Roberts and husband, Bill, of Olathe, Kans.; a daughter-in-law, Nadine Shindler-Markie and husband, Bob, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 8, 2 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava, with E. J. Hampton officiating.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m., one hour before the service time.
Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Wasola.
Memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove, Souder, or Herndon Cemeteries.
Raymond "Carl" Jackson, 72

Raymond "Carl" Jackson, 72, of 631A 23rd St., La Salle, died at 7:12 a.m., March 26, 2005, in Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru.
Private funeral services will be held following a cremation with burial in Ava Cemetery, Ava.
Arrangements are through Mueller and Pagani Funeral Home, La Salle.
Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Baxter County, Ark., to Harley and Ruby (Long) Jackson.
He married Rita Filipiak on Oct. 31, 1953, in Ottawa, Ill.
He was a mechanic for 55 years and spent many years working at Auto Trans Service in Ottawa.
Survivors include his wife, Rita, of La Salle; three sons, Jerry Jackson, of La Salle, Terry (Julie) Jackson, of Minnesota, and Gary Jackson, of Iowa; one daughter, Linda (Robert) Boutwell, of Florida; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Luther, and wife, Hazel Jackson, of Ava; four sisters, Jewell Jones, of the Kansas City area, Retha, and husband, Carl Clements, of Ava, Helen, and husband, Larry Kauffman, of the Kansas City area, and Betty, and husband, Willie Jones, of Ava; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Lloyd M. Hancock, 90

Lloyd Marr Hancock, 90, formerly of Wilder and previously of Douglas County, Mo., died Thursday evening, Feb. 24, 2005, of a massive stroke, at Pershing General Hospital in Lovelock, Nev.
Mr. Hancock was born March 18, 1914, in Douglas County, Mo., to parents, Jim and Liza Hancock, where he spent many happy boyhood years roaming the Ozark Mountains.
He attended school at the Champion School House in Champion, Mo.
Lloyd was working as a milk route drive when he met and married Elizabeth Lucille Shannon on Sept. 3, 1938. Together they had three children, of which two attended school for 12 years in Mtn. Grove.
For a time, he worked on the farm of Noel Alsup, which is where his son, Wesley, was born. For many years, Lloyd drove a school bus for the Mtn. Grove School District and was later employed for Feese Chevrolet in Mtn. Grove. Lloyd also owned and operated the local Texaco Service Station for a time and finished his lifetime career as a mechanic at M & G Motors for George and Richard Smith.
After suffering a stroke in 1974, Lloyd lived several months with his daughter, Peggy, and Tom Carreras, and family in Loomis, Calif. He then came to live with his son, Wesley, and Susie Hancock, and family in Wilder for the next 20 years, where he enjoyed the outdoors and made many friends. He was a regular patron of the Homedale Senior Citizens.
In 1994, Lloyd moved to Lovelock, Nev., to be in the care of his daughter. He lived 10 years at the Pershing General Nursing Home, where he made more friends and experienced the care and loving kindness that the staff bestowed upon him. He hated missing his snack times when we all came to visit.
He is survived by a son, Wesley Hancock, and his wife, Susie, of Wilder; a daughter, Peggy Carreras, and her husband, Tom, of Twin Falls; six grandchildren, Shawn (Brent) Harrison, of Caldwell, Shane (Jeannette) Hancock, of Wilder, Nikki (Gary) Sorrell, of Parma, Rachel (Bill) Voight, of Los Osos, Calif., Holly (Tony) Boche, of Colfax, Calif., and Jim Carreras, of Lovelock, Nev.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He loved all his family, including his nieces and nephews in Missouri and Idaho. He often reminisced about all of them and liked to tell stories about the good times he had when they were all growing up together.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Patricia, and a brother and wife, Floyd and Martha Hancock.
Lloyd's final resting place and formal rites were held this spring at the New Hope Cemetery, west of Drury, Mo., where he wanted to be buried with the rest of his immediate family.
Daniel Amasa Lyman, 13

Daniel Amasa Lyman, 13, Seymour, Mo., passed away Friday, April 8, 2005, in Webster County after an accidental drowning.
He was born the son of Blaine and Candy (McCrae) Lyman on Oct. 5, 1991, in Escalante, Utah, the seventh of 11 children.
Daniel was an energetic boy known for his affinity for reading, farming, blacksmithing, woodworking and gardening. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and church activities at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Ava.
Daniel was preceded in death by one sister, Jennifer Lyman; and his paternal grandfather, Randel Lyman.
He is survived by his parents, Blaine and Candy Lyman, of Seymour; nine siblings, April, Eliza, Hannah, Jonathan, and Emma, all of the home, Erin, David and Renee, all of Springfield, Mo., and Calleen Peterson and husband, Paul, of Falls Church, Virg.; paternal grandmother, Gwen Lyman, of Bakersfield, Calif.; maternal grandmother, Billie June Jeffs and husband, Richard, of Fallbrook, Calif.; maternal grandfather, David McCrae and wife, Tina, of Camdenton, Mo.; other extended family; and several caring friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ava, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with Bishop Jerry Brown officiating.
Burial followed in the Denney Cemetery.
A memorial fund for the Lyman family has been established at the Seymour Bank.
Betty Jean Fossett Scott, 70

Betty Jean Fossett Scott was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Chico, Texas, the daughter of Lester and Pearl (Simpson) Haney. She passed away April 12, 2005, at Sweden, Mo.
Jean married Paul Emory Fossett on Aug. 4, 1951, in Eastland, Texas. Paul and Jean were blessed with two sons, Samuel Lester in 1955, and Dannie Paul in 1957.
In May of 1953 Jean graduated as valedictorian of her class in Bakersfield, Calif.
In 1960, Jean and Paul moved to Ava, Mo. They purchased a farm in the Sweden community where they raised the family until Paul’s death in 1977.
Jean worked several years for Charlie Williams at Ozark Action at the Douglas County Courthouse. In 1973 she began a career with the Missouri Department of Social Services, working as a caseworker in Douglas County. She retired after 20 years of service in 1993.
Jean enjoyed collecting antiques, depression glassware, traveling and going to Mexico, and being with family. Jean was a member of the Methodist Church.
Jean developed Alzheimer’s at a very young age and fought a very courageous battle, touching the lives of many people. Jean was cared for by a very special friend, Leora Graham, for the past seven years, and most recently three special ladies, Ailene Medlock, Tina Stanley and Evelyn Taylor.
Jean is survived by her two sons and spouses, Sam and Terri Fossett, of Ava, and Dannie and Chris Fossett, Jersey City, N.J.; her grandchildren, Sammy and Delbert Helton, Gabe Fossett, Mindy and Donnie Crandall, Kirby and Tara Fossett, Jeff and Courtney Fossett-Davault, Cody and Tatum Fossett, Kasi Fossett and Staci Fossett; her great-grandchildren, Allison, Ciara, Claire, Celia, Garrett-Paul, Caleb, Nate, Zoe, Tanner-Paul, and Emma Jean; her sister, Anita Dickson, of Chico, Texas; and a number of relatives and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul, and two brothers. Jean later married Jim Scott, who also survives.
No formal visitation is planned.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16 at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Max Stephens officiating.
Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
James Russell Hinote, 75

James Russell Hinote, son of Lawrence S. Hinote and Eva L. Wilson Hinote, was born on Oct. 26, 1929, in Douglas County, and passed away on April 3, 2005, in his home in Norwood, at the age of 75.
James was a lifelong resident of Norwood. He was a retired road construction worker.
On Sept. 23, 1951, James and Violet Pierson were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union, two children were born.
James was a Christian. He was a Navy veteran and served his country in the Korean War for two years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bee hunting, gardening and bluegrass music.
James was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Stanley Hinote.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Hinote, of the home in Norwood; two children, Portia Potter and husband, Donald, and Lannie Hinote, all of Norwood; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Jennings, Norwood; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Donald Potter, Scott Linton and Bud Scherer officiating.
Interment was in the Oak Forest Cemetery near Norwood with full military honors by Douglas County American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 5993.
Memorials may be made to the Oak Forest Cemetery.
Hazel B. Erdahl, 80

Hazel B. Erdahl, 80, of Rochelle, Ill., passed away on Friday, April 1, 2005, at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Ill.
She was born on June 19, 1924, in Ava, the daughter of Benjamin and Ollie Lee Dougherty.
Hazel married Oscar B. Erdahl on May 19, 1945, in Hugo, Okla.
She was preceded in death by a son, Harold W. Erdahl, on June 22, 1993, and a granddaughter, Kami Erdahl.
Survivors include her husband, Oscar, of Rochelle; two sons, Quentin (Jeri) Erdahl and Douglas (Amy) Erdahl, all of Rochelle, Ill.; a daughter, Nancy (Doug) Enke, of Cherry Valley, Ill.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, Cory and Katelyn Brassfield; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Unger-Horner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 5, at 1:30 p.m. Burial was in Lindenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
Bernie Leta Sallee, 93

Bernie Leta Sallee, the daughter of Etcyl Haskins and Ollie (Delp) Haskins, was born Nov. 7, 1911, in Isabella, Mo., and departed this life April 5, 2005, at the age of 93.
Bernie was a lifelong resident of Thornfield.
On Dec. 26, 1928, Berrnie and Clarence Roosevelt Sallee were united in marriage at Foil, Mo., and to this union, four children were born.
She was a homemaker and worked on the farm and in the store with her husband all her working life. Bernie enjoyed quilting, tending her yard and making a big garden. She was a member of the Igo General Baptist Church.
Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, her daughter, Evelyn, and her husband, Clarence, who passed away in June 2003.
Bernie is survived by three daughters, Norma Griffith, Ava, Imogene Ewing, Lebanon, and Janiss Bryant and husband, Tom, of Conway; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;seven step-great-grandchildren; two-step-great-great- grandchildren; one brother, John Haskins and wife, Naomi, Thornfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 8, in the Thornfield Chapel with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Gaylon Turner officiating. Interment will be in Thornfield Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Memorials may be made to the Thornfield Cemetery.
