Wendell L. Thurman, 77

On March 9, 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Wendell Lee Thurman passed away, having lost the most courageous battle of his life against cancer.

Wendell died peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family. He was 77 years old.

Wendell was born in Augusta, Kan., to Lee and Hannah Lefler Thurman, but spent most of his youth in Ava, Mo., playing along Rippee Creek with his siblings Gordon Thurman (recently deceased), Faye Sims of Louisville, Ky., Gayle Morgan of Galt, Calif., and Rosella Russell of Benicia. Calif. All his sisters survive him.

Wendell was a career Army man, having spent 22 years serving our country. He applied for, and was accepted to Officers Candidate School at Ft. Sill, Okla., receiving his commission as a second lieutenant on June 26, 1956. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with the "Screaming Eagles." For his meritorious service, he received numerous commendations. Wendell retired from the military on May 31, 1972 and moved his family to Monterey, Calif., which had long been "home base" during Wendell's many tours around the world.

Lieutenant Colonel Thurman was an active business member of the Monterey Peninsula since 1972. For the next 25 years, he built, bought and sold homes throughout the Monterey Peninsula. His handshake on a business deal was "as good as gold", and he believed that everyone should be treated with honesty and respect. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. He truly lived by the Golden Rule and in return was respected and loved by all who knew him.

Wendell is survived by Dora, his devoted wife of 55 years, and their three children: Gina Thurman, Merced, Calif., Lisa Thurman Miroyan, Soquel, Calif., and Michael Thurman, Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his children's spouses, seven grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were conducted at the Santa Rosalia Chapel at the San Carlos Cemetery on Friday, March 14. He was buried with full military honors and the celebration of his life continued at the family home after the service.

Leslie A. Magoon, Jr., 69

Leslie A. Magoon, Jr., 69, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Neosho, died on May 25, 2008, at his home in Tulsa following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Magoon was born Sept. 4, 1938, in New Hampshire and had served in the U.S. Navy.

He worked as a machinist at Talbot Wire in Neosho and moved to Tulsa in 2005 from Neosho. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Leslie is preceded in death by his wife, Charlene, who died in 1993.

He is survived by a daughter, Teri Magoon, Tulsa; a son, Raymond Magoon and wife, Joy, Fayetteville, Ark.; his mother, Barbara Magoon, Ava; two brothers, Richard Magoon, Joplin, and Don Magoon, Norco, Calif.; one sister, Maxine Odom, Ava; and his faithful companion, Peanut, a chocolate lab.

In addition to his wife, Charlene, he is preceded in death by his father, Leslie Magoon Sr.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, Neosho, with the Rev. Terry Swagerty officiating. Burial was in the Gibson Cemetery.

Golda Lawrence, 99

Golda M. Lawrence, the daughter of Waymon L. Floyd and Sue Etta (Smith) Floyd, was born Aug. 12, 1908 in Bradleyville, Mo., and departed this life June 2, 2008 at the age of 99 years 9 months and 20 days.

Golda was a lifelong resident of Bradleyville.

On Sept. 14, 1928 Golda and William Elbert Lawrence were united in marriage. Elbert and Golda were blessed with one son.

Golda was a farmer's wife, owned and operated a café in Bradleyville and taught school. Golda worked on the elections in Bradleyville and enjoyed that very much. She loved taking care of the great-grandchildren and had a part in raising all her grandchildren. She also enjoyed going on car rides in her old car with Jamie. She was a member of the Bradleyville Church of the Nazarene.

Golda was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Guy Floyd, and her husband, Elbert.

She is survived by one son, Junior Lawrence, Bradleyville, Mo.; three grandchildren, Joe Lawrence, Brown Branch, Mo., Jeff Lawrence, McClurg, Mo., and Shirley Counts, Forsyth, Mo.; six great-grandchildren, Tanya, David, Jason, Morgan, Jake and Shelby; six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Vernon Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the Dann Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1 p.m. until service time.

Memorials may be made to the Dann Cemetery.

Maurice Dale Lamb, 71

Maurice Dale Lamb, son of Theone Lamb and Margaret Clement Lamb was born on Sept. 30, 1936 in Mesa, Ariz., and passed away on May 31, 2008 in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 71 years.

Maurice was a resident in the Brushyknob community for 50 years where he owned and operated a dairy farm.

On March 15, 1957, Maurice and Carolyn Moyers were united in marriage in Higley, Ariz., and to this union, seven children were born.

Maurice was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Mitchell Gale Lamb, one sister, Carlene Wiltbank and two brothers, Theone Lamb Jr. and Leroy Lamb.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; one son and wife, Gordon Dale and Miriam Lamb, Portland, Ore.; five daughters and their spouses, Elizabeth Zitting, Springfield, Mo., Lee Ann and Chris Thomlinson, Wasola, Mo., Callie and Rodney Welch, Jackson, Tenn., Jolene and Billy Parmenter, Norwood, Mo., and Jamie and Konrad Hendrickson, Ozark, Mo.; 35 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters and their spouses, Ella Mae and Ed Sorensen, Joann and Leonard Hathcock, Sandra Brown and Karen and Jay Rodgers; and one brother and wife, Leonard and Edith Lamb.

Services for Maurice will be Saturday, June, 7, 2008, at 11 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ava, Mo., with the Bishop Roger Kjar officiating. Interment will follow at the Ava Cemetery. Visitation is Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Mo.

Ronald Hamby, 73

Ronald Lee Hamby, 73, Caulfield, Mo., died 5:37 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center.

He was born June 29, 1934, at Ava, Mo., the son of Ernest and Edith Robertson Hamby.

He graduated from Ava High School, and on Jan. 21, 1956, was married at Ava, to Phyllis Pettyjohn.

Mr. Hamby was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He was, also, a real estate agent, developer and was a member of the National Association of Realtors. He enjoyed dairy farming, hunting, fishing, and loved playing music and singing. His family was the number one thing in his life.

Mr. Hamby was a member of the First Baptist Church, West Plains. Throughout his life Ron was active at various churches serving as deacon, Sunday school teacher and music director.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hamby, of the family home; three sons, Rick Hamby with wife, Beverly, Rod Hamby and wife, Rhonda, and Joe Hamby with Angie, all of West Plains; eight grandchildren, Rodney Hamby Jr., wife, Holly, Amanda Jenkins, Brandi Anderson, David Tomovick, Grant Hamby, Katie Hamby, Jacob Hamby and Canton Ford; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hamby, Hayden Hamby and Laken Anderson. He left one sister, Reta Watterson, Mansfield; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents; three brothers, Rex, Russell and Ray Hamby; and two sisters, Remah Hamby and Reba Hobbs, precede him in death.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at First Baptist Church, West Plains, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International.

Paul L. DeGase, 78

Paul Lawrence DeGase, age 78, of Squires, Mo., passed away at home after a long illness on May 31, 2008.

Paul was born Sept. 12, 1929 on a farm in Ozark County, Mo., to Jim and Velma (Gray) DeGase.

He attended elementary school at Clark, and graduated from high school at Ava, Mo., in 1948. He attended Southwest Missouri State for two years and then taught for three terms at local rural schools at Pleasant Hill and Excelsior. Paul served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 thru 1955, and was stationed in England and Norway. After his years of military service, Paul attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1961.

Paul went into private Veterinary practice in Potosi, Mo., and then later was employed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service for 21 years. He retired from government service in September 1989 to his farm in Squires, where he continued his love of cattle ranching for many years.

Paul accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and became a member of the Liberty General Baptist Church at Isabella, Mo.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hedrick DeGase of Reeds Spring, Mo., to whom he was married on Dec. 28, 1950 in Wasola, Mo. He is survived by one son, Paul Douglas DeGase and his fiancé, Judy McColloch, Potosi, Mo.; one daughter, Deborah Lynn DeGase, Gainesville, Mo.; one brother, James DeGase and wife, Karen, Ava, Mo.; two nephews, Greg DeGase and wife, Joyce, and Jeff DeGase and wife, Kelly; and one niece, Sherri Vaughan and husband, Shane. Paul leaves many other relatives and friends.

Services for Paul were held Tuesday, June 3, at 10 a.m., in Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Jeff Alcorn officiating. Interment followed in Murray Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 5993. The family requests memorials to Murray Cemetery.

Jeanne Upshaw, 69

Jeanne Upshaw, daughter of Charles Henderson and Josephine Hollen Henderson, was born on Dec. 15, 1938 in Sutherland, Iowa, and passed away on June 3, 2008 in Ava, Mo., at the age of 69 years.

Jeanne was a resident of Ava since 1993 moving from Wilton, Iowa.

She was a home healthcare caregiver.

On Dec. 3, 1964 Jeanne and Ellis "Whitey" Upshaw were united in marriage in Davenport, Iowa.

Jeanne loved going to bluegrass festivals with Whitey and to Silver Dollar City with her friends. She enjoyed quilting and sewing. She was a member of the Church of the Living God in Ava.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, "Whitey" and granddaughter, Cheyene Rose Upshaw.

She is survived by three children, Tamara Ahrens and Craig, Wilton, Iowa, Paul Upshaw, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Christina Cole and husband, Jeremiah, Holliday, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Kathy Serres and Kelley Romburg, both of Moline, Ill.

As Jeanne's wishes, her body was donated to the University of Missouri, School of Medicine Gift of Body Program, Columbia, Mo.

Memorial services for Jeanne were Sunday, June 8, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Living God, Ava. Local arrangements were by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Ralph Allen Goos, 94

Ralph Allen Goos, son of Fredrick August Goos and Maude Anna (Darling) Goos, was born Feb. 10, 1914, on the family ranch north of Almeria, Neb., and passed away June 9, 2008, at the Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare in Ava, Mo., at the age of 94 years.

He attended a rural one-room school and graduated from Loup County High School in 1932. He later taught for four years in the same school he attended as a boy.

On Aug. 23, 1936, Ralph married Irene VanHouten in Thedford, Neb., and to this union seven children were born.

Ralph and Irene farmed and ranched in Nebraska until they moved to Ava, in 1952. In 1959, they moved to Tonganoxie, Kan., where they lived for 32 years, moving back to Ava in 1992. Ralph retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglass Company after working for them 25 years. He was a member of the Friends Church in Tonganoxie as well as attending the Girdner Church and First Southern Baptist Church while living in Ava.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; his parents; three brothers and three sisters.

His survivors include seven children and their spouses: Carl and Mary Goss, Ava; Ralph (Pete) and Anna Goos, Lee's Summit, Patty and Russell Heatherly, Ozark, Sally and Roy Murphy, Shreveport, La., Judy and Jerry Fleer, San Diego, Calif., Donita and Bob Moore, Muskogee, Okla., and Paul and Debbie Goos, Tonganoxie, Kan.; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and extended family, as well as a host of nieces and nephews; and one sister, Etta Percell, Topeka, Kan.

Services are Friday, June 13, at 10 a.m., at Clinkingbeard Chapel in Ava, with the Rev. Hugh Campbell, Rev. Robb Hodson and Rev. Gary Swearengin presiding. Interment will be in the Ava Cemetery. Visitation is today (Thursday, June 12) from 7 to 8 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International or to the Alzheimer's Association.
