Theodore James Gray was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Sulphur Springs, Ark., to Roy James Gray and Jessie Christianson Gray.
He departed this life in Mt. Vernon, Mo., on June 24, 2008, at the age of 88.
He spent his early life in Arlington, S.D., then in 1935 moved with his family to Ava where his father ran the Ava Mill; he graduated from Ava High School in 1937. He attended Iberia Academy in Iberia, Mo., and Drury College where he earned a degree in music.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Force and in 1942, married Annie Ruth Martin; to this union two daughters were born.
In Springfield, he worked at Hoover Music Co., the Ozark Camera Shop, and as an announcer at KTTS.
Ted possessed a beautiful singing voice and was well-known as a soloist at Ava High School, several Springfield churches, and the Springfield Little Theater.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; his sister, Charlene Kester, of Ava, his sister, Maxine Ross, of Texas. Three days after his own death, he was joined by his brother, Bob Gray, of Michigan.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara and husband, Lance Massey, of Trenton, Mich., and daughter, Dorothy and husband, Chris Straw, of Springfield; grandchildren, Jonathan Straw and wife, Lynn, of California, Kristin Straw of Chicago, and Danny Straw, of Springfield; his brother, Ronnie Gray and wife Bonnie, of Topeka, Kan.; and nieces and nephews including Marilyn Alms and Gary Kester, both of Ava.
Funeral services and burial were Thursday, June 26, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
Charles B. ‘Chuck’ Cooper, Jr., 60

Charles Benjamin "Chuck" Cooper, Jr. was born on Nov. 22, 1947 in Alexandria, Va., and passed away July 29, 2008 in a auto accident along with his father in Shannon County, near Winona, at the age of 60 years.
Chuck was a resident of the Drury community for most of his life. He was a veteran and served in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines, CPL. He was formerly manager of the Ava License Bureau for Douglas County and also was operator of Cooper Cattle Co.
Chuck was a member of Ava VFW #5993, NRA, and the Shriners. He had attended the First General Baptist Church in Ava.
On March 27, 2001, Chuck and Christy Elliott were united in marriage in Hardy, Ark.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.
His survivors include his wife, Christy Cooper, of the home in Drury, Mo., two stepsons, Joey and Kendra Harris, and Michael Carter, all of Mansfield; two step-grandchildren, Chase Harris and Brianna Carter; a sister, Charlene Stahlman, Rogersville; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services for Chuck and his father, Charles, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Interment for Chuck will be scheduled at a later date and time at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, with full military honors.
The family requests memorials to American Cancer Society.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time on Saturday.
Charles B. Cooper, 88

Charles Benjamin Cooper, son of Dudley Cooper and Minnie Bell Young Cooper, was born July 11, 1920, in Keytesville, Mo., and departed this life July 29, 2008, at the age of 88 years and 18 days.
On Feb. 18, 1944, Charles and Dorothea Marie Kronyak were united in marriage in Port Angeles, Wash.
Charles and Dorothea were blessed with two children. Charles owned and operated a grocery store and was an entrepreneur.
Charles was a resident of Douglas County, for the past 43 years. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard. Charles helped lead the Democratic Committee in Douglas County, for several years and later his son, Chuck took over. Charles was a member of the Mtn. Grove VFW and the American Legion.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothea.
He is survived by one daughter, Charlene Stahlman, Rogersville; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Virgil Cooper, Elkhart, Ind., and Chester Elwood Cooper, Auxvasse, Mo.; one sister, Vera Baker, of Florida; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services for both Charles and Chuck will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Interment for Charles will follow in the Hurst Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time on Saturday.
Huey Allen Crumley, 86

Huey Allen Crumley, 86, of Marston, Mo., died Saturday, July 26, at his home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1921, at Lawrenceburg, Tenn., the son of Christopher Columbus and Carrie Mae Nelson Crumley.
On Feb. 3, 1940, he was married at Portageville to Mary Doris, who preceded him in death on July 2, 1996.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Jackie Crumley; brothers Howard Crumley, Elmer Crumley and Dallas Crumley; and a sister, Willie Mae Crumley.
He was a member of the JY Church of God.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmie Crumley, of Spencer, Ind., and James Crumley, of Ellisville; two daughters, Carol Penrod, of Portageville, and Paulette Combs, of Bradleyville; a brother, Donald Gene Crumley, of Hayti, Mo.; sisters, Leora Curtis, of Stanley, Mo., Christine, of Kennett, Irene, of St. Louis, and Opal Hardesty, of Spencer, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at DeLisle Funeral Home, Portageville, with the Rev. Danny Stephens officiating. Burial was in Portageville Cemetery.
His grandsons served as pallbearers.

Fena L. Johnston, 70, of Lakeview, Ark., died Friday, July 18, 2008, in Lakeview, Ark., at the age of 70.
She was born Sunday, Sept. 26, 1937, in Douglas County, Missouri, the daughter of Otis Collins and Myrtle Tetrick.
She married Herb Johnston on Nov. 7, 1996 at Harrison, Ark.
Fena lived in Lakeview, moving from Russellville, Ark. She was a graduate of Drury University with a degree in sociology and had been administrative assistant for Douglas County Health Dept. in Ava. She loved gardening.
Fena Johnston is survived by her husband, Herb Johnston; brothers, Charles (Laverne) Collins, of Fairview, Mo., and Dexter (Lynn) Collins, of Buffalo, Iowa; two sisters, Bonnie Haskell and Mary (Johnnie) Crain, both of Muscatine, Iowa; stepchildren, Herbert Curtis (Cathy) Johnston, of St. Charles, Linda Heyse, of Orlando, Fla., and Scott (Susan) Johnston, of St. Peters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Don Collins and Dale Haskell; a sister, Marie Hicks, and infant twin sister, Relda Collins.
Memorial service for Fena was held July 22, at Bethel Baptist Church, with Pastor Patrick Norris officiating.

Ellen (Parcels) Lawson, 85, of Marshall, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Fitzgibbon Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1923, in Brown Branch, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Russell and Cordy Palmer Parcels.
On Feb. 14, 1943, in Noble, Mo., she married Vernon (Bud) Lawson, who preceded her in death on March 3, 1998.
She had lived in Marshall since 1947 and was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. She had worked at the International Shoe Factory and was a licensed practical nurse at the Marshall Habilitation Center. She worked as a dog groomer for more than 50 years.
Survivors include three sons, John R. Lawson and his wife, Ann, of Warsaw, Mo., and Jerry Lawson and his wife, Debby, and Ron Lawson and his wife, Mary Jo Rieth, of Marshall; seven grandchildren, Kim Malter of Malta Bend, Del and Darrin Lawson of Phoenix, Ariz., Amber Bloom of Lake Ozark, Mo., and Gary Lawson, Bobby Lawson and Meg Lawson of Marshall; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, O.D. Parcels of Marshall; a sister, Elizabeth Pointer of Marshall; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Zanes.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date, following cremation.
Memorials are suggested to Fitzgibbon Cancer Center in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home.

Deloris O. Swearengin, 88, Bruner, passed away at 6:30 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2008 in her home.
She was born Dec. 4, 1919 in Dogwood, Mo., the daughter of the late Arthur and Esther (Painter) McMurry.
She was united in marriage on Jan. 10, 1942 in Ozark, to Ivol Swearengin.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Pearl McMurry; a son, Ronald Swearengin; four sisters, Marie Riddle, Lois Copeland, Maxine Boehm and Fern Luggert; and a brother, James McMurry.
Deloris lived most of her life on the family farm where she was a dairy farmer, housewife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed quilting and other handwork which she was known to donate to the Baptist Children’s Home.
She was a lifelong member of Union Chapel Baptist Church near Fordland and loved gospel music.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ivol; a daughter, Sandy Davis and husband Mike, Rogersville; a daughter-in-law, Sue Swearengin, Overland Park, Kan.; three grandsons, Nevin Swearengin, San Diego, Calif. Nathan Swearengin and wife Rachel, Olathe, Kan. and Chris Davis and his fiancée, Lauren Kent, Kansas City; two granddaughters, Shera Cookston and husband Chris, Prineville, Ore., Tara Fisher and husband Brandon, Rogersville; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Julia and Luke Swearengin and Kobe and Brooklynn Fisher; a brother, Raymond McMurry; a sister, Nadenna Denney and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 21, in Union Chapel Baptist Church under direction of J.D. Lee and Sons Funeral Home, Rogersville. Burial followed in Union Chapel Cemetery, south of Fordland.
Leora E. Hicks, 91

Leora Elizabeth (Allen) Hicks, age 91, passed away at the Joliet Hospice Home, Joliet, Ill., on Tuesday, July 22, 2008.
She was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Douglas County, Mo., to the late Charles and Ethel (Walker) Jones.
She was the wife of the late Clyde Allen and of the late Arthur Hicks.
Leora was a member of the Church of Christ, Seymour, Mo.
Leora is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley (Allen) and Richard McCrite of Channahon Ill.; two daughters-in-law, Carol Allen of Ava, and Fern Allen of Twin Falls, Idaho; her eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; special friends Don and Addie Blomquist; and other extended family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands; her two sons, J. C. Allen and Marion Allen; and her brother, Marion Leroy Jones.
Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. with funeral services following at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 28, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Internment will be at the Denney Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Leora may be directed to Joliet Hospice Home, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, Ill. 60431 or the American Cancer Society.
