Lula Mae Bloomer, daughter of Ted Jenkins and Oval (Clements) Jenkins, was born on Aug. 1, 1931, in Douglas County, Mo., and passed away in her home with her family by her side on July 18, 2008 in Ava, Mo., at the age of 76 years.
Lula Mae was a lifelong resident of the Ava community. She was a homemaker.
On Aug. 13, 1949 Lula Mae and George Bloomer were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union three children were born.
She was a Christian and of the Baptist faith and enjoyed reading her Bible.
Lula Mae liked traveling and loved to cook for the entire family on holidays. The families favorite was macaroni salad.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Verlin and Teddy Jenkins; and her husband, George, in 1985.
Lula Mae is survived by three children and their spouses, Ronnie and Lesia Bloomer, Roger and Kandy Bloomer, all of Ava, and Debbie and Jack Hall, Springfield; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Jenkins and Meredith Stamper, both of Ava; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services for Lula Mae were Monday, July 21, at 10 a.m., at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Tom Maples officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. The family requests memorials to donors’ choice of charity.
Norma Lurene Harris, 77

Norma Lurene Harris, 77, Ava, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, surrounded by her loving family at St. John's Hospital, Springfield.
Lurene was born April 25, 1931, in Ditt, Missouri, the daughter of Worden and Velma (Rice) Turley.
On January 8, 1962, Lurene was united in marriage to Leon Harris.
Lurene was an extraordinary lady whose trademark was a beautiful smile and always placed everyone’s needs before her own. She was family oriented, very caring and often gave help to others, sometimes sacrificially. Her gifts of help blended into her daily connections with her loving family and friends. Lurene was a natural with raising flowers and vegetable gardens. She loved the outdoors, fishing, and sitting peacefully on the porch. Ultimately, Lurene will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family and will be missed by many.
Lurene was preceded in death by her parents, a son Larry Pitts, a daughter Debra Harris, and a brother Boyd Turley.
She is survived by her loving husband, Leon Harris; seven children, Drevis Burke and husband, David, Jerry Pitts and wife Debbie, Daryla Graham and husband, Donnie, Terry Pitts and wife, Becky, Donnie Harris and wife, April, all of Ava, and Dale Harris and Darrell Harris, of Kansas City; three brothers, Donald Turley and wife, Leveta, Rondol Turley and wife, Kathy, and Harold "Conley" Turley and wife, Violet, all of Kansas City; one sister-in-law, Sue Turley, of Ava; 31 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Ava General Baptist Church, Ava, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Ava.
Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 14, in the church.
Bernie I. Smith, 79

Bernie Ivan Smith, son of John Smith and Minnie (Miller) Smith, was born April 28, 1929 in Ozark County, Mo, passed away on July 14, 2008.
Bernie was a truck driver and also worked at Dayco and Kraft in Springfield.
On Oct. 30, 1948, Bernie was united in marriage to Anita Linder. To this union, five children were born.
Bernie lived most of his life in Douglas and Ozark counties.
He loved playing pitch, horseshoes and with his grandchildren, along with gardening and laughing with people.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Danny Wayne.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anita; four daughters, Sue Smith, of Springfield, Donna and Larry Scribner, Judy Wilson and Rodger, Marsha Blakey and Ellis, all of Ava; eight grandchildren, Bryan Johnson, Kena Smith, Mark, and Ashley Wilson, Shannon Wilson, Chase and Michika Blakey, John Blakey, and Chris and Ashley Scribner and J.J. Scribner; seven great-grandchildren, Shael and Ireland Wilson, Blythe and Chesnea Blakey, Jaylin Wilson, Kylee Williams and Konnor Scribner; and one sister, Glenda and Gordon Sanders of Ava.
Services will be held today (Thursday, July 17, 2008) at 10 a.m., in Clinkingbeard Chapel at Ava, with the Rev. Robert Roberts and the Rev. Neal Crum officiating.
Interment will follow at the Brushyknob Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Wednesday evening from 6-7 p.m.
The family requests memorials to Seasons Hospice, 1831 West Melville, Springfield MO 65803.
Services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Danny Hartgraves, 48

Danny G. Hartgraves, the son of Billy Gene Hartgraves and Rozella (Shelton) Hartgraves, was born June 28, 1960 in Gainesville, and departed this life Aug. 17, 2008 at the age of 48 years 1 month and 19 days.
Danny was a resident of Thornfield for several years. He was a farmer and enjoyed working with his cattle. Danny also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and going on float trips. He loved reaching out to help other people and was a friend to all. Danny enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of the countryside. He loved telling jokes and being one up on people. He was a hard worker and behind all his joking he was a soft soul. Danny was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by everyone.
Danny was preceded in death by his father, Billy Gene Hartgraves, and a sister Anna Marie West.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Rozella Hartgraves Jenkins and Jim Jenkins, Wichita, Kan.; his loving companion, Janice Kasper, Thornfield; one sister, Donna McCool, Wichita, Kan.; a special nephew who was like a son, Danny West, Jr.; an aunt, Joan Holt, Ava; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. John Haskins officiating.
Interment will follow in the Thornfield Cemetery.
James William Everett Jr., 85

James William Everett Jr., 85, was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Douglas County near the Basher community.
He passed away on Aug. 17, 2008, at Autumn Oaks Care Center, Mtn. Grove.
Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Dyer Cemetery with military honors.
Arrangements were under the care and direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
Billy J. Epps, 70

Billy J. Epps, 70, of Springfield, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 in his home.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1937, at Goodhope, Mo., the son of Lester B. and Hattie A. (Whetsten) Epps.
Billy graduated from Ava High School and School of the Ozarks Junior College. He retired from Cox Health in November 1997 after 37 years of service.
On Aug. 26, 1977, he was united in marriage to Kay L. Pope, in Springfield.
He had been a member of the Masons and Abou Ben Adhem Shrine.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth Epps and Lester Eugene Epps.
He is survived by his wife, Kay L. Epps, of the home, Springfield; his mother-in-law, Burnice Pope; a son, Paul Epps and Linda Ingerly; a daughter, Susan Turner and husband, Mark, of Henlo, England; a stepson Bryan Scrivener; two granddaughters, Madison Turner and Skye Turner; a brother, Carl Epps and wife, Marjorie, Odessa, Texas; two sisters, Thelma Barker and husband Dudley, of Kansas City, and Betty Moore, Ava; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and close friends.
A memorial service was held in Greenlawn Funeral Home North at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Services for Hugh Stout, of Lawrence, Kan., who passed away at the home of his daughter on Aug. 12, 2008, will be held at the Blanche Community Church, Blanche, Mo., at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, with interment following at Blanche Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening, Aug. 15, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Hugh was born April 27, 1912, at Blanche, the son of Jake and Ada (Bell) Stout.
He was the last surviving member of nine brothers and sisters.
Until he moved to Lawrence in 2003, he lived in rural Douglas County, where he was the proprietor of rural grocery stores, farmed and for a short time carried the mail.
He enjoyed his garden and was an accomplished outdoorsman who loved hunting, trapping and fishing in the Ozarks woods of Douglas County.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Gertie, a son, Doyle, and an infant son, Dallas.
Survivors include his daughter, Virginia, and husband, "Skeet" Smith, of Lawrence, Kan.; grandchildren, Randy Joe Stout and Rick Stout, of Drury, Sheila Brown, Ava, Terry Copp, Hosford, Fla., Shellie Bhinhar, Owasso, Okla., Kathi Smith, Moran, Kan., and Susan Allen, Bozeman, Mont.; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be sent in care of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, in favor of either Douglas County Kansas VNA/Hospice or the Blanche Cemetery.
Lillian Bengtson, 80

Lillian Bengtson, 80, Ozark, formerly of Ava, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, in Ozark Nursing and Care, Ozark.
She was born April 12, 1928, in Knowlton, Wisc., to John and Cornelia (Cisewski) Danczyk.
On Oct. 31, 1953, she was united in marriage to Lyle Bengtson in Stevens Point, Wisc.
The couple farmed in Wisconsin then moved to Nevada to work in the copper mines. After retiring they moved to Goodhope, Mo., where Lillian enjoyed quilting, gardening, polka music and crocheting. Lillian also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, enjoyed visiting her neighbors and cared for her disabled husband. Her caring heart and special affection was also bestowed upon her cats and dogs.
Lillian is survived by her husband, Lyle; her children, Lester Bengtson and wife, Teri, Larold Bengtson and wife, Diane, all of Ava, LouAnn Sherman and husband, Jerry, of Ozark, Ladora Bell, of Mt. Vernon, and Lorrose Bolt, of Republic; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; other caring relatives and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 14) in Barnes Family Funeral Home, with Pastor Doug Bjerke officiating. Burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Visitation was held in Barnes Family Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. August 13.
