Frieda Larene Fletcher, 88, Ava, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center, Ava.
She was born June 9, 1916, in Silver City, Iowa, the daughter of William Acie and Minnie Bell (Miller) McGill.
In January of 1939, she moved with her parents to a farm south of the Smallett community.
On November 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to Cecil Fletcher in Hartville, and to this union, four children were born.
Frieda was a faithful and dedicated member of the First General Baptist Church of Ava, where she regularly attended since 1972.
For 50 years, she worked by her husband's side with the dairy business, haying and caring for cattle and numerous other farming chores. She was very active in her community and a member of the Star Workers Extension Club for 56 years. She worked closely with the 4-H Club, the Extension personnel, and also the feeder pig and cattle sales. She was known for her skill in hand piecing fabric for quilts as well as quilting quilt tops. She enjoyed her large vegetable gardens and cooking for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cecil; an infant daughter Sharon; two brothers Cleo McGill and Claude "Buck" McGill; one sister Myrtle Shoney; and one daughter-in-law Judy Fletcher.
Frieda is survived by her three sons Carl Fletcher and wife Joan, of Bois D'Arc, Donald Fletcher and wife Paulette, of Fair Grove, and Billy Fletcher, of Ava; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one additional great-grandchild expected soon; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard McGill and wife Billie Sue, of Ava; four sisters Sybil Haynes, of Springfield, Jean Daugherty, of Ava, Mary Jones and husband, Ora Lee, of Manitou, Okla., and Mabel Everett, of Ava; four sisters-in-law, Naomi McGill, of Catoosa, Okla., Novaleen Fletcher, of Springfield, Tracy Fletcher and Billy Mae McGill, both of Ava; two special friends Nadine Letsinger, of Mansfield, and Martha Stillings, of Ava; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the First General Baptist Church of Ava, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Robert Roberts officiating.
Mrs. Fletcher was laid to rest beside her husband, Cecil, in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to service time in the church.

Voyne Merritt, 75

Voyne was born April 6, 1930, the son of Raymond and Hazel (McDaniel) Merritt, but was raised in the home of Horace and Hazel Hall, and departed this life April 22, 2005, at the age of 75 years.
Voyne was a resident of the Ava area for most of his life. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a member of the V.F.W. in Ava.
Voyne and Charlene Dollarhide were united in marriage Aug. 14, 1954, in Ava, and to this union, four daughters were born.
Voyne owned and operated Merritt Auto Salvage for several years. He was very blessed with a great family and good friends. He loved fishing, playing cards, and Thursday night singing at the theatre.
Preceding Voyne in death were Horace and Hazel Hall; Raymond and Faye Merritt; one daughter, Virginia; one brother, Jackie; and a sister, Vernita.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene, of the home in Ava; three daughters, Vicky Burnett, Ava, Sue Goin, Oldfied, and Verna Willhaus, Ava; five grandchildren, Travis and Melissa Burnett, Corey and Colby Goin, and Tyler Kelly; also five great-grandchildren, Colton and Coy Burnett, Haylan and Kelby Massey, and Allyson Goin; Voyne was also survived by four brothers, Verlin Hall, Mansfield, Dale Hall, Carl Hall, and Boyd Hall, all of Ava; five sisters, Juanita Shebiel, Patsy Dickens, Lora Kay Davis, all of Ava, Mary McCall, Republic, Diane Garrison, Springfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held Monday, April 25, at 2 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Wayne Pierson officiating.
Interment was in the Dyer Cemetery.
Military graveside service was provided by American Legion Post 112 and V.F.W. 5993.
Carla Jo Branstetter, 47

Carla Jo Branstetter, the daughter of Carl Von Deeds and Mary Belle (Kester) Deeds, was born Feb. 21, 1958, in Springfield, and passed away in an auto accident on April 14, 2005, in Springfield, at the age of 47.
Carla was a resident of Springfield but was raised in Ava.
On July 21, 1982, Carla and Rick Branstetter were united in marriage and to this union, two children were born.
She was a member of the Seminole Baptist Temple in Springfield. She also was a member of the Bissett PTA. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, cooking and creating scrapbooks. Her love and joy in her life was being a wife and mother.
Carla was preceded in death by her father, Carl Deeds, in 1991.
She is survived by her husband, Rick, of Springfield; two children, Matthew and Katelyn Branstetter, of the home; her mother, Mary Belle Deeds, Mansfield; one sister and brother-in-law, Lonna and Vince Akers, Ava; her in-laws, Glenn and Janet Branstetter, Ava; sister-in-law and husband, Janice and Terry Long, Willard; nephew Dustin Long; two nieces, Heather Long and Alyssa Akers; and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 18, at Seminole Baptist Church, Springfield, with Pastor Don Baier officiating.
Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Interment was at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Ovid L. Prine, 83

Ovid L. Prine, 83, of Yakima, Wash., received his promotion to Heaven on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005. He was born Aug. 2, 1921, in Smallett, Mo., the youngest of eight children, to Jeff and Martha Prine.
On Feb. 14, 1942, he married Ruby F. Simpson, and they enjoyed 63 years together.
At the age of 17, he joined the CCC Company #1739 where he served from 1939-1942. On Aug. 4, 1942, he was drafted into the Army Air Force and proudly served his country in World War II. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 23, 1945.
He was awarded 12 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge. Ovid was extremely proud to be an American and serve his country.
After the war, he returned home to Missouri and was reunited with his wife, Ruby Faye and his daughter, Linda Faye.
In 1952, they moved to Yakima, Wash. He began working at Darigold Creamery where he worked until his retirement.
Ovid enjoyed traveling, camping in his 5th wheel, and going to cattle auction sales. His grandchildren, Matthew and Victoria, were the joy of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby F., of Yakima, Wash.; daughter, Linda F. (Joe) Jackson, of Yakima, Wash.; granddaughter, Tamara F. (Steve) Cole, of Yakima; and great-grandchildren, Matthew Cole and Victoria F. Cole, both of Yakima, Wash.
Ovid was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters and a grandson, Terry J. Jackson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m., at Shaw and Sons Funeral Home, with concluding services at West Hills Memorial Park.
Jackson Hubbard, 79

Jackson Hubbard, son of Kelsa Hubbard and Mattie (Snyder) Hubbard, was born June 9, 1925, in Blanche, Mo.
Jackson died April 6, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, Redding, Calif., following a traffic accident.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve and their parents.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Anderson, Calif.; a brother, Arthur and his wife, Ada, of Anderson, Calif.; sisters, Ruth McCleary, of Redding, Calif., Opal Uhlmann, of West Plains, and Edith Hollingshed and her husband, Joe, of Dora; daughters, Marylyn O’Hare, of Redding, Calif., JacalynWilcox and her husband, Tom, of Vallejo, Calif., Sonja DeVere and her husband, John, of Madera, Calif.; and a son, Kent Hubbard and his wife, Susan, of Weed, Calif.
Jackson lived the farm life with his family until age 18 when he was drafted to serve in the 148th Infantry Regtiment. He served from September 1942 until January 1946 in New Guinea, Luzon, North Solomons, Bogenvill, and the Philippines. He earned three Bronze Stars, Bronze Arrowhead and Campaign Ribbons. In February 1945, Jackson earned the Purple Heart in Luzon. He was discharged as a sergeant to return to the Missouri farm life with his parents and brother.
Jackson met Marjorie Massey in 1946. They fell in love and married in 1947. They had two daughters, on their Missouri farm. In 1954 the family moved to Shasta County, Calif., where Jackson was employed by U.S. Plywood/ Champion International for 32 years. Jackson and Marjorie had another daughter and a son. Over the 58 years they were married they had three daughters, one son, seven grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-granddaughters, and a great-grandson.
Services were officiated by Pastor Jim Dahl. Jackson was buried in the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Shasta County, Calif.

Walter Leamon Fleetwood, 88

Walter Leamon Fleetwood, son of William Columbus and Mary Jane Cummins Fleetwood, was born Feb. 22, 1917, near Seymour, and departed this life Monday, April 4, 2005, in Strafford Care Center at the age of 88.
Walter lived most of his life in the Seymour/Ava area where he did farm labor. He was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Seymour. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, going to church and visiting with his friends and family.
He was united in marriage to Pauline Loretta Cantrell on Aug. 1, 1940, and to the union, two daughters and one son were born.
All the children preceded him in death in infancy.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, William, Claude, Clyde, and Homer Fleetwood; a half brother, Jess Cummins; three sisters, Ora Mae Easley, Opal Fleetwood Davidson, and Effie Mae Cox; five half sisters, Lou Fleetwood, Minnie Bell Rippee, Mary Jane Cummins, Rachel Plumb, and Sadie Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Strafford Care Center, Strafford, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews including his caregivers, Bro. Dale and Macel Cox and Jo and Bro. Bobby Simmons, Seymour.
Services were held Friday, April 8, at 2:30 p.m., in Holman-Howe Chapel, Seymour, with Bro. Gerald Allmon officiating. Burial was in the Hodge Cemetery southeast of Seymour.
Ethel Pearl Mitchell, 87

Ethel Pearl Mitchell, 87, Chadwick, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Missouri.
Pearl was born December 26, 1917, in Garrison, Missouri, the daughter of Francis Marion and Montie (Black) Stevens.
On September 13, 1937, Pearl was united in marriage to Clarence Mitchell and to this union, one daughter and three sons were born.
Pearl lived her entire life in the Garrison - Chadwick area and was a long time member of the Garrison Baptist Church. She was a hard working woman who enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing for her family, and being outdoors riding her 4-wheeler. Pearl was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Ultimately she will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family. She touched the lives of everyone she ever met with her optimistic attitude and her love for life. The most cherished and best remembered times of her life have been the "togetherness" of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence, son-in-law Junior Melton, granddaughter Jackie Lee, two great-grandchildren, two sisters and six brothers.
Pearl is survived by her loving family; daughter Doris Braden and husband Manford of Sparta; three sons Larry Mitchell and wife Margie of Garrison, Garry Mitchell and wife Alice of Garrison, and Jerry Mitchell and wife Sharon of Chadwick; daughter-in-law Carol Mitchell; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; along with a host nieces and nephews and many close friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in Garrison Baptist Church under the direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with Rev. Carl Thompson, Rev. Jonathan Mitchell and Rev. Troy Hull officiating.
Burial followed in the Swansville Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Garrison Baptist Church.
Dorothy Davis, 94

Dorothy Davis died May 6, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Laura N. Krantz, of Ava.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., May 10, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Chapel, Ava, with Rev. Tom Maple officiating.
Burial was in Goodhope Cemetery.
Born May 3, 1911, at Oldfield, Mo., she was the daughter of Minda B. Nelson and Laura M. Nelson.
She married Sam M. Davis, Dec. 24, 1926.
She was a resident of Ava since 1970, except for a brief period in the nursing home in Garden City, Kans., she has lived with her daughter, Laura N. Krantz, since July 2001, of Ava.
She is survived by her twin sister, Ortha M. Short McHaffie; one daughter, Laura N. Krantz, of Ava; and a son, Jerry R. (Sherry) Davis, of Florence, South Carolina; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 38 great great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam M. Davis; one daughter, Betty Lou Kells; a son, Gary Richard Davis; two brothers and four sisters.
She was a member of Goodhope Nazarene Church.

Dr. Leonard C. Douglas, 77

Dr. Leonard Carl Douglas, 77, was born Jan. 19, 1928, in Alton, Mo., to the late Clifton Taylor Douglas and Fay (Wallace) Douglas.
He passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.
Leonard and Elda Faye Sell were united in marriage on March 5, 1950, in Ava. They spent 55 wonderful years working together and most of all being each other's best friend.
Leonard began work with Missouri Cooperative Extension in 1949. He served in field positions, ranging from assistant county Extension agent to Extension district director until 1967, when he was appointed assistant dean of Extension, University of Missouri-Columbia.
In 1968, Leonard became associate dean of Extension, serving in that capacity until 1975 when he was appointed dean of Extension. The University of Missouri-Columbia changed that title to vice provost of Extension in 1979. He became acting director of Cooperative Extension in 1979, and was appointed director the following year, while also retaining his position as vice provost.
His University of Missouri service was interrupted twice for positions in private businesses and for study at Cornell University, where he earned a doctorate degree in education administration in 1966.
A native of Oregon County, Leonard holds two degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia: a bachelor of science in agriculture and a master of science in Extension education. After his retirement from the University of Missouri in 1985, Leonard and Elda moved to their farm in Christian County to raise alfalfa hay.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Elda; one son, Chris Douglas and wife, Georgia, of Sparta; one daughter, Cindy Fehlauer and husband, Don, of Fort Atkinson, Wisc.; grandchildren Travis and Heather Douglas of Lee's Summit, Gene and Jackie Douglas of Springfield, Christina Douglas of Aurora, Colo., Melissa and Matt Eberhardt of Oakcreek, Wisc., and Alicia Fehlauer and her fiancé, Dustin Smith, of Roscoe, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Elle and Ross Douglas, of Springfield, and Jackson Douglas of Lee's Summit; numerous other loving relatives and a host of friends.
Leonard was a man of strong Christian faith and served faithfully in leadership roles in the congregations and organizations he and Elda were part of: eight years as the Fairview United Methodist Church, Columbia, church council chair; 15 years as the Ozark United Methodist Church, Ozark, church council Chair; eight years as Christian County Farm Bureau president; and 27 years as a member of the board of trustees of the Missouri 4-H Foundation.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 2, at 10 a.m. in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark.
Burial followed in the Ava Cemetery.

Leo Horner, 89

Leo Horner, the son of Fred H. Horner and Celia Arminta (Bates) Horner, was born June 20, 1915, at Rome, Mo., and departed this life April 28, 2005, at the age of 89.
Leo was a resident of Springfield for the past eight years. He was a former resident of the Sandy community in Douglas County where he was a farmer for over 50 years. Leo was a longtime member of the Sandy General Baptist Church and served on the Plainview School Board and the local ASCS board.
On June 26, 1937, Leo and Stella R. Jennings were united in marriage in Santa Ana, Calif., and to the union, three children were born. Stella preceded Leo in death in 1990.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Eric, Lawrence and Boyd Horner, and a sister, Ora Pennington.
On Feb. 2, 1991, Leo and Rosa M. Cisco were united in marriage in Harrison, Ark.
Leo is survived by Rose; his three children, a daughter, Ruth Smith and husband, Duane, of Ava, and two sons, Alan Horner, Overland Park. Kan., and Steve Horner and wife, Tina, of Olathe, Kan. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Andy Smith and wife, Meg, Allyson, Samantha, Marlana and Kaitlin Horner; one great-grandchild, Paige Smith; a sister, Sybil Hodges, Forsyth; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. John Comer officiating.
Leo is buried beside Stella at Bethel Cemetery, Brown Branch.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
