Charlie Edward Henderson, 86, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 6 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, in the Missouri Veteran’s Home, Mt. Vernon.
Charlie was born on Jan. 10, 1922 in Mansfield, Mo., to William and Norma (Lord) Henderson.
He was a World War II Army Veteran, was employed with Rawlings Company in Ava for 18 years.
On April 20, 1973, he married Firn Henderson in Springfield. She survives.
Charlie worked as a grinder for the Rayco Steel Plant in Springfield, was a member of the Viola Baptist Church and enjoyed square dancing with friends in Springfield. He and his wife moved to Mt. Vernon from Shell Knob, Mo., several years ago.
Additional survivors include: daughters, Becky Thomas of Theodosia, and Charlotte Jones of Fair Grove; two stepsons, Bill Stanford of Mt. Vernon and Blake Stanford of Monett; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren.
His parents, first wife, Vera Henderson, stepsons, Benny and Bob Stanford, seven brothers and sisters and one great-grandson, Charles McCullough preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1, in the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon. Burial, with full military honors, were at 2:30 p.m., in the Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield.
Vivian Miller, 76

Vivian Ann Miller, age 76, was born in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was placed in the Coldwater, Mich., orphanage and adopted from there by Bertram and Leona Swaim, of Dearborn, Mich.
She went to be with her Lord, whom she dearly loved, on Nov. 22, 2008.
On Jan. 12, 1952, Vivian was united in marriage to the Rev. Frank A. Miller in Tampa, Fla.
She is survived by her husband, Frank, of the home; their two children, David and wife Laura, of Jay, Okla., and Ruth and husband Jim Johnson, of Soldotna, Alaska/Hollister, Mo.; four grandchildren, Melody Miller of Omaha, Neb., Charity Miller of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Joshua and Jonathan Johnson, both of Soldotna, Alaska/Hollister, Mo.
Vivian accepted Christ as her personal Savior at the age of 7 at the Calvary Community Church in Dearborn, Mich. She later moved to Florida, with her parents and was baptized near Ocala, Fla., and dedicated her life to the Lord for missionary service at the age of 12. She graduated from Trinity Bible College, Clearwater, Fla.
She and Frank were accepted for missionary service by American Missionary Fellowship, (formerly American Sunday School Union) in 1952. They both served as full-time faith missionaries for over 50 years, starting Sunday schools, conducting Vacation Bible Schools, Bible camps, and doing Released-Time Bible classes (working) in 12 states.
Family and friends were invited to share in a celebration of Vivian's life at 10 a.m., Nov. 25, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Interment followed at the Ava Cemetery in Ava, Mo. Visitation was held at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, Nov. 24.
The family requests contributions to American Missionary Fellowship.
Ora Lee Leschinsky, 81

Ora Lee Leschinsky the daughter of Burney B. Herndon and Edith (Wallace) Herndon, was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Wasola, Missouri, and departed this life Nov. 21, 2008, at the age of 81.
On Dec. 4, 1945 Ora and Ervin H. Leschinsky were united in marriage in Wasola, Missouri. Ora and Ervin were blessed with two sons.
She was born, raised and lived her entire life on the family farm at Wasola.
Ora served as postmaster of Wasola for 27 years. She was an active member of the Oak Grove General Baptist Church, serving as a teacher and treasurer. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ava Chapter #47 and the Gainesville Chapter #432, a Charter member of the Wasola Fire Dept., Ava VFW Auxiliary, and Red Hat Society. In her early years she joined the Nurses Cadet Corps. She loved to travel, read, study her Bible and play cards.
Ora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ervin, one brother-in-law, Freeman Miller, and one niece, Yvonne Terry.
She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Kindrick Lee and Mary Leschinsky, Wasola, and Robert Clay and Sherry, Irmo, S.C.; two granddaughters, Michelle Horton and Ben, Springfield, Mo., and Martina Leschinsky, Bonaire, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Megan Lee and Shane Kindrick Horton; one sister, Emily Miller, Independence, Mo.; two nephews, Dr. Burney Miller, Odessa Mo., and Thomas Miller, Independence, Mo.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, in the Oak Grove General Baptist Church, Wasola, with the Revs. Dwain Moore, Ron Felker and Charles McFarland officiating.
Interment will follow in the Noble Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Order of the Eastern Star service conducted by Ava Chapter #47. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove General Baptist Church, Community Hospice or to the donors choice of charity.
Lotus Swearengin, 86

Lotus Swearengin, age 86 years 9 months 21 days, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Nov. 22.
She was born at Pansy, Mo., to Elias and Cassie (Nelson) Stillings.
She was united in marriage to Carl Swearengin of Elkhead, Mo., on Feb. 6, 1940 and to this union, was born four children.
They bought their farm in 1941 in the Breedon community where they lived and raised their family. She was a charter member of the Eastern Gate Baptist Church, which she faithfully attended. She enjoyed the Christian fellowship of her church family and loved to hear and sing good gospel songs. Family was very precious to her and she especially enjoyed Christmas and Easter when all the kids and grandkids came home.
She is survived by her children: a son, Roger Swearengin and wife, Irene, of Ava, Mo., a daughter, Donna Loveland and husband, Jerry, of Ava, Mo., a daughter, Carolyn Schnieder, of Oldfield, Mo., and a son-in-law, Bud Hampton and wife, Francis, of Ava Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Emogene Tate, of Moses Lake, Wash.; and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; a daughter, Bonita Hampton; a son-in-law, Dennis Schnieder; her parents; five sisters; and two brothers.
Visitation was held at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Services were at Eastern Gate Baptist Church, Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. Burial followed at Stillings Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Eastern Gate Baptist Church or American Cancer Society at the funeral home.
Minnie L. Tharp, 93

Minnie L. Tharp, 93, of Kansas City, passed away Sunday. Sept. 14, 2008.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens with a visitation at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
Minnie is survived by her husband of 72 years, Roy E. Tharp; three sons, Robert, James, and Michael Tharp; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
Roy Tharp was Ava High School band director in the 1940s.
Retha Freeman, 90

Retha J. Freeman, daughter of William T. Stout and Ella (Bell) Stout, was born on Nov. 5, 1918 in Bertha, Mo., and passed away on Nov. 23, 2008 at John Day, Ore., at the age of 90 years.
Retha was a lifelong resident of the Ava community. She was retired from Rawlings Sporting Goods in Ava. She also helped on the farm milking cows.
On March 8, 1937 Retha and Louis Freeman were united in marriage at Drury, Mo., and to this union, three children were born.
Retha was a Christian and a devoted member of the Faith Rock Church in Ava. She loved her family, church family and her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis in 1974; her son, Paul; three brothers; three sisters; and one grandson.
Retha is survived by two daughters, Betty and Jack Retherford, Mt. Vernon, Ore., and Karen Fahey, Marshfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Service for Retha will be Monday, Dec. 1, 2 p.m. at the Faith Rock Church, Ava, Mo., with the Rev. Robert Grisham officiating. Interment will follow in the Brushy Knob Cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Faith Rock Church.
Helen Irene (Willhoit) Griego, 83

Helen Griego, 83, entered peacefully into eternal life Saturday morning, Nov. 15, 2008.
Helen was born in Longrun, Mo., but spent most of her adult life in California.
She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Alameda, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Griego; her parents, Rev. George and Clara Willhoit; three brothers, Willard, Conley and Howard; and two sisters, Beulah and Opal.
She is survived by her son, Michael Griego; her daughter, Kathleen Jermstad; five adult grandchildren, Sherry Blevins, Nicholas Griego, Jason Griego, Jaime Jermstad, and Kyle Jermstad; four great-grandchildren, Kara, Chris, Stephanie and Jerick; two sisters, Mildred Watson and Joann Livingston; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m., at Greer Family Mortuary followed by interment at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.
Mary Lou Hendricks, 60

Graveside services were held in Fairview, Okla., for Mary Lou Wells Hendricks who passed away Oct. 10.
She was the daughter of the late Lester and Pauline Jenkins, of Ava.
She married Robert "Bob" Hendricks, who preceded her in death.
Mary Lou is survived by four sons, Kurtis, Gary, Jackie and Robert Allen.
