Daniel William Wilson, 93

Daniel "Dan” William Wilson, son of the late Christopher E. and Hattie (James) Wilson, was born on Nov. 11, 1918 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and departed this life on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at his home in Vanzant, Mo., following a short illness at 93 years of age.

Daniel grew up in Iowa, and in later years, the family moved to Farragut, Iowa, where he graduated from high school and farmed.

He was united in marriage to LaVeta Poor on June 26, 1941 in Rockport, Mo. Five children were born to this union.

They moved to San Ysidro, Calif., where he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country for four years, where he fought in the Battles of South Pacific Theatre, and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Following his discharge, they moved to Imperial Beach, Calif., where they purchased land and built their first home.

During this time, in addition to working for North Island Navel Air Station, Dan trained and raced thoroughbred horses. This was his passion and hobby.

In 1960, Dan and LaVeta moved their family to a farm in Vanzant, Mo., in Douglas County. Besides farming, Dan worked doing masonry and carpenter jobs.

He enjoyed being outdoors tending to his gardens each year and doing his farming chores.

Dan was a loving and kind husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, neighbor and friend. He truly loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them as often as possible.

He was a longtime member of the Vanzant Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Louise Wilson, Viola Deirling, and Jane Johnston; and by two grandchildren: Jennifer Lee Wilson and Wesley Ray Cauldwell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, LaVeta Wilson, of their home; two sons, Gary Wilson and his wife, Mary Beth, of Riverside, Calif., and Chris Wilson and his wife, Evelyn, of Vanzant, Mo.; three daughters, Carol Curtis and her husband, Charles, of Ava, Mo., Daneta Hines and her husband, Les, of Elk Creek, Mo., and Catherine Love and her husband, Lance, of Springfield, Mo.; one brother: Dewey Wilson and his wife, Illa, of Bend, Ore.; nine grandchildren, Craig Curtis, Cammie Curtis, Carrie Wilson, Daniel Wayne Cauldwell, Kimberly (Cauldwell) Roberts, Jeff Cauldwell and his wife, Amanda, Kit Wilson and his wife, Laurel, Harley Love, and Austen Love; six great-grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services for Daniel Wilson were held on Monday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Dr. Robert Bratt and Rev. Roger Flint officiating.

Genessa Freeman and Genet Harris, accompanied by Geneva McCullough, sang "Hold The Fort, ” "What A Friend We Have In Jesus, ” and "Haven Of Rest.”

Pallbearers were Tom Hicks, Craig Curtis, Jeff Cauldwell, Bobby Emery, Austin Love, and Kit Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Don Newberry and Basil Smith.

Full military honors were given at the cemetery by the American Legion Post 30, and The Lima Burial Detail Team with Jared Moore servicing as bugler.

Burial was in the Pleasant Home Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Mo.

Dale W. Lakey, 77

Dale Wilford Lakey, age 77, father of five children, sawmiller, logger, fisherman, trapshooter, turkey hunter and frequent fish fryer, passed away of natural causes Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, in Golden Years Care Center of Harrisonville, Mo.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie (Cannon) Lakey of 32 years, mother and father, Simon and Lillie (Elliott) Lakey as well as one brother, Howard Otto Lakey of Macon, Mo., and one sister, Bonnie Jean (Lakey) Starks of Dittmer, Mo.

He is survived by one sister, Fretta Mae (Lakey) Luchetta of Golden, Colo.; and all five of his children: Marsha (Lakey) Sanford of Sanger, Texas, Melody (Lakey) Folsom of Harrisonville, Mo., (Simon) Abe Lakey of Climax Springs, Mo., Lillie (Lakey) Ash of Climax Springs, Mo., and Donna (Lakey) Walter of Kansas City, Mo.; and grandchildren Ashley Sanford, Jake Sanford, Shane Sanford, Brooklynn Dallas Lakey, Clint Lakey, Evan Walter, Aidan Walter and Jamison Walter.

Dale had a number of immediate family members, cousins, aunts, uncles, a host of nieces and nephews, and friends who will miss him not only for his incredible fish frying ability, but also for the way he loved reaching out to them through family reunions and those famous, always delicious, and often impromptu "fish fries.”

Services for Dale will be Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Clinkingbeard Chapel in Ava, Mo., with Pastor Reg Kelly officiating.

A visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice of charity.

Beulah Frazier, 86

Beulah Frazier, 85 years, passed to heaven on Jan. 5, 2012 at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare, Ava, Mo., with her family by her side.

Beulah was born Aug. 20, 1926 in Rockbridge, Mo., to David and Earla (Liniger) Byerley.

Beulah was a lifelong resident of the Noble community.

On June 29, 1946, Beulah and Lee Frazier were united in marriage in Noble, Mo., and to this union, four sons were born.

Beulah was a Christian and a member of the Pine Ridge Church of Christ.

Beulah enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and taking care of her family. Her joy was working on the farm with Lee and her boys.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lee in 1988, a son, James Lee and a brother, Willard Byerley.

Beulah is survived by three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Carma Frazier, Gainesville, Mo., Ray and Doni Frazier, Elkland, Mo., and Dale and Janet Frazier, Ozark, Mo.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Beulah were Saturday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m., at the Peters Cemetery, Noble, Mo. Officiating was E.J. Hampton.

Memorials may be made to Peters Cemetery.

Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Edwin M. Hailey

Edwin Maurice Hailey, 89, passed away Jan. 5, 2015 at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Mo. He was born April 23, 1925 in Ava, Mo., to parents Homer and Hattie Ellison Hailey.

Edwin served in the Army, Sept, 14, 1944 to June 8, 1945, then June 9 to Oct. 19, 1946. He was stationed in Italy and Europe; achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

When he returned home, he became a dairy farmer and an established business owner of dairy farm and telecommunications equipment, retiring at the age of 89.

Ten years ago, he traveled to Uganda, Africa.

He had a great interest working on history and photos for the preservation of family heritage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geraldine Davis Hailey; son, David Hailey; three sisters: Mona Denney, Geraldine Hailey and Kathleen Harnden.

Edwin is survived by son, Roger and wife, Pam Hailey; daughter-in-law, Cindy Hailey; grandchildren: April and husband Ted Algaier, Tiffany and husband Michael Beard, Alicia and husband Ryan Wojciuch, Abby Hailey, Anna Hailey, Lori and husband Justin Moore, and Leigh Lawhon; along with seven great-grandchildren. A host of other friends and relatives have lost a good friend and neighbor.

A visitation was held Friday, Jan. 9, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Ava Family Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Ava United Methodist Church with burial following, in the Ava City Cemetery, with full military honors by the Troy Herd American Legion Post #112 and the Ava VFW #5993.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice.

Leanna Borders

Leanna Borders, beloved wife of the late Kenneth W. Borders, peacefully departed this earthly life Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Rogersville, Mo. Leanna was 82 years and 5 months wise.

One of six children, Leanna was born on Aug. 7, 1932, in Ava, Mo., to Charles Putnam and Sarah Columbus (Bragg) Putnam.

She was raised in Ava and was a graduate of the Ava High School Class of 1950. Leanna continued her education by attending Draughon Business College.

On May 19, 1951, she married Kenneth Wilburn Borders and to this union, three children were born.

The Borders’ raised their family in the Seymour-Ava area.

Kenneth and Leanna shared 46 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on Dec. 26, 1997.

Family was first in Leanna’s life and that same devotion continued with her grandchildren. They were very much a part of her life and she treasured spending all the time she could with them. She liked music and playing the piano. Quilting and collecting glassware were also hobbies she enjoyed in her spare time. Many years ago, one job she took outside the home was with the Webster County Citizen.

Leanna attended Harmony Free Will Baptist Church and Gentry Church. She was also a member of the Logan-Rogersville Ladies’ Club.

In addition to her parents, Leanna was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth W. Borders; three sisters, Juanita Rogers, Faye Kidd, and Marie Arbuthnot; and brother, Herbert Putnam.

Leanna leaves behind her children: son, Mike Borders and wife Debbie, of Seymour, daughter, Cheryl Raybuck and husband Larry, of Rogersville, and daughter, Sandy Jackson of Rogersville; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Don Putnam of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; mother-in-law, Opal Borders of Seymour; sister-in-law, Geraldine Lee of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends and neighbors.

Leanna Borders was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a caring sister, aunt and friend. She was a kind spirit and her life was rich with love of family. Leanna set a beautiful example for her children and grandchildren. She created a lifetime of memories and moments that will be cherished in the hearts of family and friends forever. Leanna will be so deeply missed by family and friends and all those who came to know her.

Lance Ray Watterson

Lance Ray Watterson, 53 years, passed to Heaven on Jan. 7, 2015, at Rocky Ridge Nursing Home in Mansfield, Mo., with his family by his side.

Lance was born Nov. 13, 1961 to Jim and Gaytha (Lakey) Watterson in Springfield, Mo.

He graduated from Mt. Zion Bible School.

Lance grew up on the family farm and lived in Ava his entire life, where he raised Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur dogs.

Recently, Lance made a full commitment to Jesus Christ and was saved.

Lance enjoyed spending time with his family, especially playing with his three grandsons. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Lance was preceded by his Granddad Ray Watterson, Granny Reta Watterson, Grandpa Evert Lakey, Granny Alta Shanks, and Gordon Shanks, one sister, Faira (Watterson) Spindle, and one infant sister, Angela Watterson.

Lance is survived by his daughter, Brooke (Watterson) Elwood; son-in-law, Shawn Elwood; three grandsons, Jayce, Casten, and Brax; his parents; one brother, Justin Watterson; Uncle Bob and Wilda Watterson, Uncle Johnny Wayne and Carol Sue Watterson, Aunt Brenda and Jack Freeman, Uncle J.T. and Lorie Lakey of Iowa, Aunt Lula and Don Dyer of Springfield, Aunt Norma and Lee Cornelson of Arizona, Aunt Regina and Jim Evans; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Lance will be Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Highway Church of the Nazarene, Ava, Mo., with burial in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time at the church.

Officiating will be Pastor Mark Hatcher.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Bible School.

James Boyd VanHouden

James Boyd VanHouden, 74 years, 7 months, and 23 days old, departed this life on Jan. 1, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Mo., with his family by his side.

Boyd was born May 9, 1940 in Ava, Mo., to Ruben and Alice (Kellogg) VanHouden.

On March 9, 1963, Boyd and Lena Duckworth were united in marriage in Ava, Mo., and to this union two children were born.

Boyd served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years. He retired from Sweetheart Cup Co. in 2002 after 36 years. Boyd loved all outdoor activities; farming, hunting, fishing, especially the fall deer hunting with his son, grandsons and friends. He also loved the changing of the seasons and the beauty of it all.

He attended church at Ava General Baptist Church. Boyd was a loving husband and devoted to his two children and four grandchildren.

Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marvin and Leon; and a grandson, Jacob Boyd.

Boyd is survived by his wife, Lena VanHouden, Springfield, Mo.; his daughter, Kalynn and Gary McMurray, Spokane, Mo.; his son, Jason VanHouden, Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Shelby McMurray, Cody McMurray, currently serving in the U.S.Army overseas, Rachelle McMurray and Jaron VanHouden. He is also survived by a daugher-in-law, Amy VanHouden; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Boyd were Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at 3 p.m. p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Mo., with burial in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.

Officiating was Pastor Oren Alcorn.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Gary D. Silvey

Gary Dean Silvey, age 73, of Battlefield, Mo., passed away on Dec. 22, 2014.

He was born in Riverside, Calif., on March 17, 1941, the son of Arnold and Virginia Silvey.

They moved to Ava, Mo., where he attended school and graduated from Ava High School with the class of 1959.

He married Barbara Johnson on Feb. 27, 1970, and they had 44 wonderful years together.

Gary worked for Dayco for 41 years before retiring. He loved to go camping, fishing, traveling with his wife and motorcycling with his buddies in the retreads, and you couldn’t get him away from NASCAR.

Gary was saved at a young age at youth camp and attended Wilson Creek Baptist Church with his wife.

He is preceded in death by his father, Arnold Silvey; daughters Lori Lynn and Michelle Renee; son Gabriel Dean; and brother, Dennis Silvey.

Gary is survived by his wife, Barbara; his mother, Virginia of Ava; daughter, Lisa Ussery, of Republic; brothers, Larry and his wife Mae Ruth of Ava, and Dan and his wife Nan of Colorado; brother-in-law Ronnie Johnson and wife Joyce, of Ozark; sisters-in-law Donna Massengill of Aurora, and Jeanette Johns of Nixa; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. in Wilson Creek Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wilson Creek Baptist Church Senior Camp Fund.

Services were entrusted to Greenlawn Funeral Home South.
