Nellie Mae Norman, the daughter of John D. Harnden and Mabel R. (Dougherty) Harnden, was born April 26, 1912, in Ava, and departed this life April 29, 2005, at the age of 93.
Nellie was resident of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., for the past 12 years moving from Ava. In Ste. Genevieve, she lived at the Riverview at the Park Nursing Home for five years. In Ava, she lived at Red Bud Village for 14 years.
On July 30, 1935, Nellie and Glenn Norman were united in marriage in Ozark, and to this union, three children were born.
Nellie and her husband, Glenn, co-owned and operated a grocery store in Ava. She also worked at the Ava Department Store. Nellie was a terrific seamstress and loved quilting and needlework. She also loved cooking and playing cards, and being with family.
Nellie was a member of the Highway Church of the Nazarene in Ava.
Preceding Nellie in death were her parents; eight brothers and sisters; and her husband, Glenn.
She is survived by one son, Ronnie Norman, Ava; two daughters, Janice Sutherland and Joyce Ann Norman, both of Ste. Genevieve; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ellen Dilsaver, Nixa; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating.
Interment was in Ava Cemetery.
Jake Degase, 92

Etcyl "Jake" Degase, of Rifle, Colo., passed away May 1, 2005. He was 92 years of age.
Mr. Degase was born Sept. 28, 1912, to Pone Degase and Elsie Miller, in Ozark County, Mo.
He spent his childhood in Missouri.
He married Myrtle Plum on April 27, 1931, in Douglas County, Mo. She preceded him in death in October 1998.
Mr. Degase worked as a mechanic for Union Carbide for 35 years. He retired on Oct. 1, 1974. He was a resident of Rifle, Colo. for 70 years. Jake was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and yard work.
He had many nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-great-nieces and nephews, whom he considered his grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was a second dad to Bub, Patty and Sue Plum.
In the last four years, the highlight of his life was to get to go to his family reunions in Ava, Mo.
He is survived by Ivy Turner, of Ava; nieces and nephews, Kenneth Plum (Margie), Robert "Bub" Plum, all of Rifle, Colo., and Patty Loesch and her husband, of Las Vegas. He is also survived by many, many special friends. He was loved by all. He kept in touch by subscribing to the Douglas County Herald for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers; and one sister; and a niece, Sue Plum Moorehead.
He will be laid to rest Saturday, May 7, 10:30 a.m., in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Rifle, Colo.
Pallbearers were Carl Gooch, Eric Terrell, Dick Arnold, Joseph Metzger, Jim Hunter and Ross Hunter, along with honorary pallbearers Richard Lansdown, Rocky Degase, Wayne Degase, Jim Turner, Marvin "Butch" Degase and Bub Plum.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ryan Lovel Rogers, 58

Ryan Lovel Rogers, son (and third child) of Loren Lovel and Dorothy (Cosper) Rogers, was born on Dec. 6, 1946, and left his life on April 16, 2005, in Springerville, Ariz.
Ryan was a resident of Thornfield, Mo., for a brief time in 2003-2004. He is the brother of Tenoha Eager (Thornfield), Shirlie Wilson (Clinton, Ark.), Denny and Albert Rogers, Ginger Gilliam, and Fara Areballo, all of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ryan was a Church of Christ minister for over 30 years, and a floor installer by trade. He was also a friend to and leading authority on country music legend, Merle Haggard.
Ryan is survived by his beloved wife, Leona; his precious children, Shane, Dustin, Michael Rogers, Presley Sultan, William and Leslie Damon, Amber Whitman, Don Looker; 12 grandchildren, Ava, Cailee and Michael Rogers, Derek, Daniel and Deche Sultan, Matthew and Clay Damon, Latrisha, Aimee and Courtney Whitman and Dustin Looker; all of his brothers and sisters; nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Ryan's nieces and nephews include, Cliffy Hughes (Thornfield), Cindy Marsh (Bradleyville), Darrell Eager (Greenwood, Ark.), Thomas, Rondo and Gator Damon, Lettie Baker, Moteet Ennis (Arkansas), Dee Dee Poslednik, Denny II, Rhett, and Stormy Rogers, Cassie Meadows, Misty McGee, Dawnie, David and Ray Gilliam, Jordan Rogers, Durand Jaramillo, and April Eager (Arizona), Chad Whitman (New York), Diane, Ricky, Patty and Johnny Johnson (Oregon), Sandy Johnson (California), George, Myra and Kenny Rogers, and Connie and David Slade, all of California.
Funeral was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Springerville, Ariz., under the direction of Burnham-Jewekes Funeral Home of Eager, Ariz.
The services were conducted by Bishop Steve Hamblin, and presided over by the St. Johns State Presidency.
Mary Joann Woodard, 48

Mary Joann Woodard, the daughter of the late Eugene and Letha Metcalf Elliott, was born in Brushy Knob, Mo, on June 13, 1956, and passed away at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, April 23, 2005, at the age of 48 years.
She had been a resident of the Springfield area for many years and moved to Dexter in 1995. She was employed at Tyson Foods in Dexter and was a member of the Lighthouse Christian Center in Dexter.
On Feb. 2, 2001, she was married to Paul Woodard in Dexter.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Woodard, of Dexter; two daughters, Jennifer Calhoun, of Houston, Mo., and Tracy Rayburn, of Wappapello, Mo.; three grandchildren; five brothers, Don Elliott, Mansfield, Kenneth Elliott, Norwood, Roy Elliott, Poplar Bluff, Dwight Elliott, Oakwood, Ga., Richard Elliott, Ava; two sisters, Virginia Bell, Mtn. Grove, and Juanita Harwell, Poplar Bluff; other relatives and friends also survive.
Memorial services will be held today, (Thursday, April 28) at 10 a.m. in the Watkins and Sons Chapel in Dexter, with Bro. John Ruddick of Bloomfield officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in the Evansdale Cemetery in Evans, Mo., with Watkins and Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
Austin Earl Taylor, 76

Austin Earl Taylor, 76, Ava, passed away, Sunday, April 24, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.
He was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Gradeyville, Ky., the son of Durard and Anna Lee (Coomer) Taylor.
On Oct. 19, 1950, he and Opal Lois Humes were united in marriage in Argo, Ill.
Austin was a retired machinist employed by the auto industry. During retirement he enjoyed mowing the lawn, being outdoors and traveling with his wife. For relaxation he attended garage sales and auctions. He was a dedicated father, husband, and family man.
He also attended the Brush Arbor Church of God, Mansfield.
Austin was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and one sister.
In passing, he leaves love and confidence to his family descendants, including his wife Opal Lois; five sons, Roger Taylor and wife, Rebecca, Steve Taylor and wife, Diane, both of Ava, Vernon Taylor, of Jefferson City, Johnny Taylor, of Lake of the Ozarks, and David Taylor, Pine Bluff, Ark.; one daughter, Esther Terry, and husband, Jerry, of Ava; one brother, Dalton Taylor, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Ruth Moss, of Mars Chapel, Ky.; nine grandchildren; other extended family members and several friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the First General Baptist Church, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Kenneth Cowan and Pastor Tim Brubeck officiating.
Burial followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, north of Ava.
Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the First General Baptist Church.

Esther E. Currier, 78

Esther E. Currier, the daughter of Frank Davey and Nora (Kling) Davey, was born Oct. 27, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa, and departed this life April 22, 2005, following a long illness, at the age of 78.
Esther was raised by Ada (Rose) Athey. On Oct. 31, 1942, Esther and William Johnson were united in marriage and to this union, four children were born.
Mr. Johnson preceded Esther in death in 1959.
On May 13, 1960, Esther and Floyd Currier were united in marriage in Iowa City, Iowa.
Esther has been a resident of the Ava area for the past 24 years, moving here from Buffalo, Iowa.
She was employed as a secretary in the Ava courthouse for eight years. Esther was a Christian and attended Sweden Church, and sang bass in the church choir. She was an accomplished pianist.
Preceding Esther in death were her parents, one infant son, and one stepson, Floyd Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd, of the home, Ava; four children, Jane Stahler, Rocklin, Calif., Pamela Mills, Davenport, Iowa, Mark Johnson, Bettendorf, Iowa, and Tod Currier, Ava; four stepchildren, Roger Currier and Arvena Means, both of Davenport, Iowa, Evelyn Spicer, state of Missouri, and Brian Currier, state of New York; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Francis Grones, Minneapolis, Minn.
Esther will be missed by her loving family and special friends, Norva, Vickie, Barbara and Kathy.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Robert Grisham and Marvin Loftin officiating.
Interment followed in the Sweden Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sweden Church.
Vivian Irene Wheat, 88

Vivian Irene Wheat, daughter of the late Harry Virgil and Sylvia May (Dobbs) Clark, was born Jan., 12, 1917, in Buckhart, Mo., and departed this life on May 9, 2005, in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, following a long illness. She was 88.
Vivian grew up and attended school in the Buckhart community and was united in marriage to Lawrence Wheat on July 13, 1933. Three children were born to this union.
They made their home and raised their family on a farm in the Vanzant area in Douglas County where they lived all of their lives. They also owned and operated the Wheat’s Western Store for over 20 years.
Mr. Wheat passed away on March 27, 2004.
Vivian enjoyed sewing, crocheting, singing and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She loved taking care of her family and cooking for them. She had a great sense of humor which she never lost, no matter how she felt.
Vivian was saved at a young age and attended the Victory Church in Douglas County. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary; one son, Ralph Wheat; one brother, Glenn Clark; four sisters, Nellie DeSpain, Pauline Scherer, Maxine Tooley and Leona Clark.
She is survived by one son, William “Pat” Wheat and his wife, Sherry, of Vanzant; one daughter, Sylvia Hicks and her husband, Tom, of Mtn. Grove; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Wheat, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Orbin Clark, of Ozark; three sisters, Daisy Cordoza, Manteca, Calif., Violet Williams, Houston, Texas, and Sue Childers, of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Susan, Melissa, Tommy, LeAnn, Rosanna, Josiah and Beverly; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Rose; several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in the Craig-Hurtt-Bradley Chapel, Mtn. Grove, with the Revs. J.D. Williams and Gail “Bud” Scherer officiating.
Burial was in the Tetrick Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt-Bradley Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Darlene Smith, 89

Elizabeth Darlene Smith, the daughter of Leon Arthur Gould and Alice Eugenia (Anderson) Gould, was born May 19, 1915, in Bemidji, Minn., and departed this life May 17, 2005, at the age of 89 years.
On June 20, 1937, Elizabeth and Alexander Martin Smith were united in marriage in Bemidji, Minn., and to this union, three children were born.
Elizabeth was a homemaker and farmer. Elizabeth has been a resident of the Ava area since 1937.
She is also a member of Church of Christ (Temple Lot).
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters, one infant son, and her husband, Alexander.
She is survived by one son, Verl Smith; and a daughter, Estella Smith, both of Ava; three grandchildren, AdriAnn Smith, Jason Smith, David Davis; four great-grandchildren, Chloe McKee, Bailey, Troy and Eli Smith; two sisters, Helen Taubert, Milwaukee, Wisc., Amy Schrader, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Don Gould, Bemidji, Minn.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside service will be Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m., in the Dobbs Cemetery, with Elder Joe Smith officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, 6-7 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Pauline Brixey, 85

Pauline Brixey, 85, a longtime resident of Wenatchee, and a former resident of East Wenatchee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, May 1, 2005, at 6:45 a.m., in Colonial Vista Rehab Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1919, to Steve and Norie (Rippey) Tate at Ava, Mo., where she was raised and educated.
Following her schooling, she began working in a beauty parlor in Ava, where she worked until meeting Dillard Brixey.
They were married in 1945, and promptly moved to Wenatchee to make their home.
Pauline owned and operated a beauty shop in East Wenatchee for forty years until retiring. For many years she did hair for Telford's Chapel of the Valley. During her retirement years and in the winter months she would travel with her husband to Arizona, which they did for 16 years.
Pauline was a 50 year member of the Wenatchee First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter and her husband, Pat and Ron Lannoye, of Malaga; two grandchildren, Wayne A. Lannoye of East Wenatchee, Wendy Johnson of Bellevue; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 5, at the Wenatchee First Baptist Church with Pastor Wes Hunter officiating.
Interment followed at Wenatchee City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Arrangements were by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
Stanley Scislowicz, 86

Stanley Scislowicz was born on April 15, 1919, in Krakow, Poland, the son of Eleanor Scislowicz, and departed this life in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 86 years.
Stanley spent most of his youth in Poland before immigrating to the United States and Chicago.
In December of 1956, he married Josephine Kwiczen.
Stanley spent most of his working life in the Chicago area where he was a welder and maintenance man for the railroad, several years before he retired he bought property in the Ava area planning for retirement. In 1976, he fulfilled that dream with other members of his family following.
Stanley is survived by two sons and one daughter, Leonard and his wife, Wendy Scislowicz, of Ava, Marian Scislowicz, of Krakow, Poland, and Theresa Razo, of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Stanley was preceded by his wife, Josephine; an infant daughter, and his mother.
Stanley was an honest man who liked gardening, growing fruit, walking in the country, a nice Polka and playing with his grandchildren.
Memorial service will be Thursday (today), May 19, at 1 p.m., at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Ava. Cremation services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
