Harold Raymond Carson, 89

Harold Raymond Carson, Retired Lieutenant Commander United States Navy, age 89, of Wasola, Mo., passed into eternity on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 due to illness.

Harold was born in 1925 in Jacksonville, Ill., to Walter and Bertha Rae Carson.

He attended Jacksonville High School and graduated in 1943. He received a chemistry scholarship to college, but because of World War II, he joined the United States Navy in 1943. Harold fought in several naval battles in the South Pacific, including the Battle of the Marianas Islands. He retired from the Navy after serving 28 years.

Harold met the love of his life, Emily Ayres, and they were married in Mare Island, Calif., on Dec. 7, 1954. They had five children and the family traveled to interesting places around the world.

Surviving family members are Michael Carson and his wife, Sheila, of Maryland, James Carson, of Kentucky, Cathy Johnson and her husband, Douglas, of Montana, Cherie Gordon, of Missouri, and Tricia, wife of Bill Carson, of North Carolina. Harold has 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Emily; his parents; his stepmother, Virginia Carson; and his son, Bill Carson.

Harold was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ava, Mo. He was a wonderful husband an extraordinary father and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He will be buried in the Ava Cemetery next to his wife.

Graveside services for Harold were Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the Ava Cemetery, Ava, Mo., with full military honors by Troy Herd American Legion Post #112.

Officiating was Bishop Carlton Barrus.

Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Julia Carryl Brown, 67

Julia Carryl (Bradley) Brown was born the daughter of Wilford Woodrow "Bill” Bradley and Mona Belle (Warrick) Bradley on May 31, 1947, at Gainesville, Mo., and departed this life on Jan. 18, 2015, at Springfield, Mo., at the age of 67 years.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Lee Brown, Dec. 11, 1964 in rural Douglas County, Mo., making their lifelong home and work in Ozark County.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ralph Brown; son Travis Lee Brown; one granddaughter, Ashton Brown, and one grandson, Dawson Brown; one great-granddaughter, Emree Hardison; and two sisters, Karen Cotham, of Thayer, Mo. and Billie Blair and her husband Arnold of Springfield, Mo.; several nieces, nephews, one special cousin, Jim Bradley of Springfield; other relatives and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son Todd Allen Brown; her twin brother Jimmy Darryl Bradley; and one brother-in-law Gary Cotham.

She started working at the Ozark County Health Center in April of 1966, retiring in 2009 after 43 years. She worked as a clerk/typist billing for home health services and bookkeeping. Her co-workers loved her sharp sense of humor. After retiring, she worked part time at Bryant Plastics. She was a member of the Ozark County Health Board. For nine years, she was chairwoman to help organize the Hootin an Hollarin Parade. She was president of the Big Creek Ladies Golf Association in Mtn. Home, Ark.

She was deeply devoted to her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She enjoyed working in her flowers, enjoyed her cats, dogs, the cattle and loved watching the birds. She collected glass fruit and loved collecting pretty dishes. She and Ralph enjoyed traveling and she loved to play golf. They had traveled to 48 states and six different countries playing golf. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed visiting with all her friends.

She was a Christian and a member of the Lilly Ridge General Baptist Church. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services for Carryl were held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015 at the Lilly Ridge General Baptist Church in Gainesville, Mo., with Bro. Dale Roberts officiating.

Visitation was Tuesday from 11 a.m. to service time at the church.

Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Lillian Byrd, 93

Lillian Byrd, 93, formerly of Ava, passed away Jan. 15, 2015 in Rolla, Mo.

Lillian was born Jan. 14, 1922 in Caruthersville, Mo. to Ralph and Ruby Lux.

She is survived by her children, Edith Light and husband Raymond, Rolla, Charles Byrd, Rolla, Leonard Byrd, Ozark and Dale Byrd, Rolla.

Hugh Dallas Morris, 95

Hugh Dallas Morris, age 95, of Leeton, Mo., passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at Golden Living Center – Westwood in Clinton, Mo.

He was born May 11, 1919, in Basher, Mo., the son of John and Lizzie (Pierce) Morris.

On July 29, 1939, he was united in marriage to Violet Florence Miller in Ava, Mo.

Hugh grew up in Ava, Mo., and later moved to Leeton, Mo., and Windsor, Mo., areas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, guarding German prisoners of war at Camp Howze, Texas. After his military career, Hugh and his wife owned and operated Morris Auto Sales, Service and Café in Leeton, Mo., in the 1950s. He farmed and worked in hardware stores during the 1960s, and later worked 20 years on road construction in Iowa, until retiring in 1982, when he returned to live in Leeton, Mo. Hugh and Violet enjoyed yard sales, flea markets and visits with friends and family. He will be missed by all.

Hugh is survived by his wife Violet; two sons, Howard Morris and wife Donna of Leeton, Mo., and Herbert Morris of Clinton, Mo.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Harold Morris, three infant sisters, one brother, Eldon Morris and one sister Inez Detherage.

Cremation graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at Laurel Oaks Cemetery in Windsor, Mo., with Pastor Leroy Goodwin officiating with full military honors provided.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Heartland Hospice and can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, Mo.

Mary C. Purkeypyle

Mary C. Purkeypyle, 91, formerly of Pontiac, Mo., departed this life Jan. 11, 2014, at the Gainesville Health Care Center.

She was born Aug 26, 1923, in Chicago, Ill.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 15, at 1:30 p.m., in the Ava City Cemetery.

All arrangements are under the care and direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.

Dolores M. Farris, 80

Dolores Maxine Farris, 80 years, passed to heaven on July 11, 2014 at her home in Ava, with her family by her side, from a long illness.

Dolores was born Nov. 10, 1933 in Amazonia, Mo., to Finis and Lucille (Laubscher) Gueltzau.

She graduated from Mokane High School in Mokane, Mo.

On Aug. 2, 1957, Dolores and James Gerald Farris were united in marriage in Steedman, Mo., and to this union, two daughters were born, Marilyn and Laura.

She was a Christian and a member of the Ava Church of Christ. Dolores taught Sunday School for many years, helped with the clothing and giveaway program and sang with the church group at many funerals.

She was co-owner and manager with her husband, James, of Farris Outlet Store in Ava, Mo., for several years. She also was a seamstress and loved sewing for many friends and family. Dolores also provided childcare in her home for many children. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and most of all spending time with her family.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James in 2008.

Dolores is survived by two daughters, Marilyn and husband, Art Corum, and Laura Camp and husband, Lawrence, all of Ava, Mo.; one granddaughter, Monica Denise Corum of Ava; two sisters and their spouses, Phyllis and Lowell Dean Vandeloecht, Fulton, Mo., and Judith and Bill Sheppard, Paducah, Ky.; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Dolores will be Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m. in Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, Mo., with burial following in the Ava Cemetery.

Officiating will be Harlin Howerton.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to American Heart Association at the funeral home.

Arthur Archie Porter, 87

Arthur Archie Porter, 87 years, 16 days, was called home by his Heavenly Father on July 8, 2014 at Cox ER Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo., with his loving family by his side.

Arthur was born June 22, 1927 in Girdner, Mo., to Evert Lee and Amanda Melvina (Plumb) Porter.

Arthur was a resident of Seymour, Mo., for 37 years. He graduated from Ava High School in 1946 and received a bachelor of science degree in education from SMSU (MSU) in 1963 in Springfield, Mo. He was a retired elementary school teacher and taught in rural one and two room schools in Douglas and Howell counties for 20 years. He taught his last 22 years in Seymour R-II and retired in 1989. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1950 and 51.

On Nov. 11, 1951, Arthur and Gustava Moore were united in marriage by Rev. Sam Daniels in his home in Wasola, Mo. and to this union, one daughter, Beth Ann, was born in 1964.

Arthur was converted in 1956 through his faith in Jesus during a revival held by Rev. Tom Johnson at the Girdner Union Church and he lived his life according to the Word of his Heavenly Father.

He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing gospel songs, listening to Roy Acuff and delighted in listening to the recordings of his students, whom he had taught to read music. He also enjoyed working in his shop as a small engine mechanic and sharpening saws. Arthur is now singing with his family and friends in Heaven, and awaits the arrival of his loved ones.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Evert and Amanda Porter, and his in-laws, Harvey and Dora Moore.

Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Gustava Moore Porter, Seymour, Mo.; one daughter, Beth Ann Porter, and one grandson, Silas Henry Porter, both of the home in Seymour; one sister, Sybil Porter Gheer; and one brother, Freeman Porter, both of Ava, Mo.; one niece and her husband, NolaJean (Jena) and Jerry Moyer, Ava, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Arthur were Monday, July 14, at 2 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with burial in the Dobbs Cemetery, east of Ava.

Visitation was Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the funeral home.

Officiating was Pastor Larry Vinson.

Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis or Muscular Dystrophy at the funeral home.
