Gladys Elaine Smith, the daughter of Charles Jarod Spicer and Mildred Irene (Ott) Spicer, was born Aug. 2, 1937, in Holland, Ohio.
She departed this life on June 17, 2005, at the age of 67 years.
In Sept. 1958, Gladys and Billy Ray Smith were united in marriage in Tucson, Ariz.
Gladys was lovingly called Granny by her family and friends, even before moving to the Ava area in 1974, from Tucson, Ariz. She used that title to name the store she owned and operated in Goodhope and was know and loved by all in the community. Her hobbies included knitting and gardening. She loved being with her family and her many friends.
Granny was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Norma Jean Tombaugh; and a daughter, Lora Ann Smith.
She is survived by a son and a daughter, Robbie Smith and Sonia Kay Smith, both of Ava; a grandson, Garrett Smith; a great granddaughter, Hallie Nichole Smith; three brothers, Howard Spicer, Oldfield, Dale Spicer, Tucson, Ariz.; and Martin Spicer, Oldfield; one half-brother, Dan Spicer, Tucson, Ariz.; and host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside service was Tuesday, June 21, in the Ava Cemetery, Ava, with the Rev. Vernon Fuller officiating.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude or to the American Cancer Society.
Services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Versal Leone Hill, 95

Versal Leone Hill, daughter of Hobart Gentry and Bess Hunt Gentry, was born on Oct. 13, 1909, in Douglas County, Mo., and passed away on June 15, 2005, in Glenwood Nursing Home in Seymour, Mo., at the age of 95.
Versal was a housewife and resident of the Ava community for several years.
On July 30, 1930, Versal and Roscoe H. Hill were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, one son was born.
Versal loved gardening and bird watching.
She was a member of the Ava Full Gospel Church.
Versal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roscoe; one son, Marvin Wayne Hill; and a brother, Harry Gentry.
Her survivors include cousins, Arthur Allen, Ava, Larry Allen, Cabool; and many other cousins and friends.
Graveside services are Friday, June 17, at 2 p.m., at the Ava Cemetery.
Services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Memorials can be made to the Douglas County Library.
Helen M. Smith, 93

Helen M. Smith, 93, Springfield, was born in Ava on November 22, 1911, the daughter of Horace and Eva (White) Curnutt, and passed away on June 19, 2005, in Springfield.
Helen was united in marriage with Eben Smith and he preceded her in death.
Helen was a homemaker. In her free time she was a piano teacher and played in the Liberty Senior Citizens Band. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, oil painting, ce-ramics, and hat making.
She was a member of Schweitzer United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mammie Minnic of Columbia; a nephew, James E. Curry and his wife, Louanna, of Ava; a niece, Jenna Lee Ferrel of Colorado; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; several cousins; and many special friends at the Parkmoor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 21, at 2 p.m. in the Thieme–Shadel-Hicks Funeral Service at Rivermonte Chapel, with interment following in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.
Conrad I. Tennison, 70

Memorial services for Conrad I. Tennison, 70, of Sedalia, were held Wednesday, June 8, at the Hicks Cemetery in Theodosia, officiated by family and friends.
Mr. Tennison died June 2, 2005, at his home.
He was born July 20, 1934, in Lutie, the son of Benjamin Ellis and Ethyl June (Lawrence) Tennison.
He graduated from Gainesville High School in 1953, and then served 10 years in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Granite Lodge No. 272 and a past member of the Abou Ben Adhem Temple in Springfield.
He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly spending time on his farm in Ozark County since retiring in 1997. His constant companion was his dog, Debo.
Mr. Tennison is survived by his wife, Sandra (Johnson) Tennison; one daughter, Teresa Emery and her husband, Richard, of Missoula, Mont.; two sons, Jeff Tennison and his wife, Anne, of Raymore and Ted Tennison and his wife, Lisa, of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Brad Tennison and Sarah Tennison of Raymore and Megan Emery of Missoula, Mont.; and a large circle of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials can be made to the Hospice Memorial Garden of Sedalia or the Mid-Missouri Humane Society.

Beverly Ann Russell, 63

Beverly Ann Russell, 63, of Kansas City, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a courageous battle against colon cancer.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday, June 17, at 10 a.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Jerry Applegate officiating.
Beverly was born on June 14, 1941, in Ava.
After graduating from Ava High School in 1959, she made her home in Kansas City. Her most recent career was at DST, which was very fulfilling to her and where she made many friends. Beverly will be remembered for her love of books, crossword puzzles, art and her dry sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Lee F. and Lottie Russell, and three siblings, Lee Max Russell, Robert Neal Russell and Virginia King.
Beverly is survived by a twin sister, Carol Sue Russell, Kansas City, four sisters and a brother, Bette Dean Douglass and husband, Steve, Rolla, Linda Kay Napoliello and husband, Ronald, Houston, Texas, Sheryl Jo Russell, Lenexa, Kan., Samuel John Russell and wife, Judy, Ozark, and Lana Lea Logston and husband, David, Independence; two sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Ruth Nation, the daughter of Homer Clinton Warren and Martha Jane (Currier) Warren, was born May 6, 1917, in the Sweden community and departed this life June 14, 2005, at the age of 88.
On March 27, 1953, Ruth and Robert Nation were united in marriage in Galveston, Texas.
Ruth enjoyed fishing, auctions, traveling, taking care of her farm animals and her family.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters, two half brothers and three half sisters.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Nation, of the home in Ava; two sons, Jimmy Rowe and wife, Barbara, and Jerry Engle and wife, Vickie, all of Ava; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; one brother, Royal Warren, of Oregon; three sisters, May Barnett, Ozark, Hattie Frey, of Kansas and Doris Troix, of California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, June 17, 1-6 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with cremation following service under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

James L. Bryan, 83

James L. Bryan, born Nov. 9, 1921, in Seymour, to James B. and Opal Bryan, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, at the age of 83, after a lengthy illness.
James attended Seymour and Ava schools and the School of the Ozarks, Point Lookout.
He married Mabel “Mabeline” Nance and they had one son, James A. Bryan.
Prior to World War II, James served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and during World War II, he served in the United States Army and received the Purple Heart.
Together, James and Mabel owned and operated grocery stores in Longrun, McClurg and Norwood. They also owned and operated motel and restaurant businesses, apartments and rental houses in and about Springfield, Seymour, Branson and Forsyth. James drove for Associated Transport in Liberty, Mo., at one time.
James was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harlan Bryan.
James is survived by his wife, Mabel and their son, Jim and his wife, Susan, of Ozark. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Curt Bryan and his wife, Karen, of Seattle, Wash., and Julie Bryan Wise and her husband, Garnett, of Ft. Smith, Ark.; five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by many friends and family members.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 10, in the Thieme-Shadel-Hicks Funeral Service at Rivermonte Chapel, Springfield, with interment following in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Bryan’s memory with the American Heart Association, 2446 E. Madrid, Springfield, Missouri 65804.
James E. “Jim” Hobson, 76

James Hobson was born March 31, 1929, the son of James Hobson and Necia (Jones) Hobson, in Memphis, Tenn., and departed this life on June 30, 2005, in Ava, at the age of 76.
Jim was a resident of the Ava area since 1998, moving here from Colorado. Jim served his country with the U.S. Navy.
Jim’s passion was writing and he aspired to be a published author. He also enjoyed music and movies of all types. He was meticulous and all his hobbies showed his quest for perfection.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two sons, Christopher and Jimmy.
Jim is survived by two daughters, Debora Slabaugh and husband, Darrell, of Dallas, Texas, and Victoria Newell, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Joe Hobson, Davenport, Iowa, and Blaine Hobson, Texarkana, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Cremation service is under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Memorials may be made to Community Hospice, of Mtn. Grove.

Shirley Goodnight, age 85, of Sapulpa, Okla., passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, in her daughter's home in Seligman, Mo.
She was born July 24, 1919, in Lutie, Mo., the daughter of Jesse and Mary (Absher) Simpson.
On July 19, 1937, in Pond Fork, Mo., she was united in marriage to Bernie Goodnight, who preceded her in death March 3, 1987.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one grandson and one granddaughter.
She is survived by two sons, Billie Joe Goodnight, and his wife, Cathy, of Sapulpa, Okla., and Harold Junior Goodnight, and his friend, Cathy, of Ava; three daughters, Claudie Hartsell, and her husband, Olen Dewitt, of Broken Arrow, Okla., Barbara Ingram, and her husband, Mark, of Wagoner, Okla., and Sharon Sue Benson, of Seligman, Mo.; one brother, Cleo Simpson, and his wife, Vickie, of Ridgefield, Wash.; six sisters, Goldie Hart, of Sedalia, Mo., Irene Humbyrd, of Woodland, Wash., Lorene Hayes, of Woodland, Wash., Clella Record, and her husband, Clarence, of Longview, Wash., Litha Hayden, and her husband, Ed, of Golden Dale, Wash., and Bertha Kilkelly, of Woodland, Wash., 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great great-grandchildren.
Shirley received her education in Thornfield, Mo. She resided in Springdale, Ark. several years, where she was employed with the Wilson Factory. She moved to Sapulpa, Okla. three years ago to make her home.
Shirley loved bluegrass and gospel music. Some of her favorite past times were sewing, camping and traveling. Her greatest joy in life was being involved with her family.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, in Thornfield Cemetery, Thornfield, Mo., under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville, Mo.
Herbert G. "Jake" Jacobs, 81

Herbert G. "Jake" Jacobs, the son of Richard Jacobs and Irene Belle (Lay) Jacobs, was born May 12, 1924, in Elmwood, Ohio, and passed away on July 5, 2005, in his home in Springfield, at the age of 81.
Jake was a resident of Springfield for a year and a half moving from Ava.
Prior to moving to Ava, he resided in St. Louis County for 50 years. He was employed as a supervisor and carpenter, building both commercial and residential buildings before he retired. Jake served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army. He served two tours, a total of seven years.
Jake was a member of the Seminole Baptist Temple in Springfield, and while living in Ava attended the First General Baptist Church.
On July 20, 1945, Jake and Ruth Kirby were united in marriage and to this union, five children were born. Ruth preceded Jake in death.
On March 10, 1999, Jake and Virginia B. (Proctor) Andrews were united in marriage in Harrison, Ark.
Preceding Jake in death were his parents; two brothers, Charles and Edward; two sisters, Delsey and Lolabea and his first wife, Ruth in 1997.
Jake is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home, in Springfield; two sons: David A. Jacobs of St. Louis, and Michael K. Jacobs of Highland Village, Texas; three daughters, Rita S. Brown, of Maplewood, Minn., Ellen I. Law, of Florissant, and Cheryl A. Calhoun of Kokomo, Ind.; two stepsons, David Andrews, of Omaha, Neb., and Robert Andrews of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and three step grandchildren; one brother, Jesse Jacobs, of Waynesburg, Ky., four sisters, Lucy Jane Huchin and Opal Carter, both of Covington, Ky., Phyllis Smith, of Winchester, Ky., and Connie Bradshaw, of Harrodsburg, Ky.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. today (Thursday, July 7) at First General Baptist Church, Ava, with Revs. Robert Roberts, Don Baier and Mel Brown officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m.. to service time at the church.
Burial will be Friday, July 8, at 1 p.m., at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, with Rev. Kurt Calkins officiating, with full military honors.
