Herbert Bragg Putnam, 76

Herbert B. Putnam, the son of Charles Aaron Putnam and Sarah Columbus Bragg Putnam, was born March 21, 1929, in Douglas County, and departed this life Aug. 10, 2005, at the age of 76.

Herbert was a lifelong resident of the Gentry community near Ava. He was an electrician and beef farmer. Herbert was converted in 1971 and was a member of the Gentry Community Church. He served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force.

Herbert loved chess, music and playing his guitar, traveling to see family, studying Civil War history, and was a good neighbor to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Juanita Rogers and Faye Kidd, and brothers-in-law Melvin Rogers, Clinton Kidd, Kenneth Borders and Charles Arbuthnot.

His survivors include one brother, Don Putnam and wife, Frieda, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two sisters, Marie Arbuthnot, Chatham, Ill., Leanna Borders, Rogersville; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. David Dodson and Maxine Lund officiating.

Interment followed in the Bragg Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Bragg Cemetery Fund.

Willis D. Donley, 80

Aug 11, 2005

Willis D. Donley passed away Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at the Gainesville Healthcare Center. He was 80 years of age.

Willis was born on March 25, 1925, in Michigan to Frank Donley and Nellie (Byam) Donley.

On Nov. 12, 1946, Willis and Lucille Friend were married in Mountain Home, Ark. To this union were born five children.

A farmer, Willis milked for many years. He was a life-long resident of Ozark County.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Donley, of the home in Isabella; children, Larry Donley, of Thornfield, Joyce Pellham, of Wasola, Dan Donley, of Thornfield, Rex Donley, of Thornfield, and Judy Hambelton, of Thornfield; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Edith Smith, of Isabella, Eldon Donley, of Theodosia, Marjorie Graham, of Thornfield, and Austin Donley, of Squires.

Willis was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Gainesville, with Jim Kyle and Randy Dalton officiating.

Burial will be at Thornfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Thornfield Cemetery or to St. Jude's Children Hospital in care of the funeral home.

Deborah Gail Clemens, 54

Aug 11, 2005

Deborah Gail Clemens, daughter of James Calvin Covin and Joyce Dorothy Terrell Covin, was born on Nov. 13, 1950, in Pasadena, Texas, and passed away in her home at Ava, from a long illness at the age of 54 years.

Deborah was a housewife and had been a resident of the Ava community for the past few years. She was a member of the Girdner Church. Deborah had received her PhD in Egyptian science at Louisiana State University (LSU).

On July 4, 1999, Deborah and Ronald Clemens were united in marriage at Girdner, near Ava.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Her survivors include her husband, Ronald Clemens of the home; one son, Cole Goodwin and wife, Amy, Springfield; one daughter, Sharon Moore, Houston, Texas; her mother, Joyce Dorothy Terrell, Houston, Texas; two brothers, Lonnie Covin, Dallas, Texas, and James Covin, Houston, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cremation services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava.

Brenda Kay (Suggs) Middlekauff

Brenda Kay (Suggs) Middlekauff the daughter of Harlan Ellis Suggs and Josephine (Hicks) Suggs, was born Aug. 20, 1962, in Mansfield.

Brenda has been missing for three years and was found July 2, 2005. Her death was due to a homicide.

For the past 20 years, Brenda has been a resident of Bend, Ore., and was a former resident of Ava. Brenda was employed by Fred Meyers Dept. Store as a cashier and in the nursery department.

In August 1979, Brenda and Clyde Hill were united in marriage in Mtn. Grove. They were married for 20 years and he preceded her in death.

Brenda was a Christian and attended church in Bend, Ore.

Preceding Brenda in death were her father; her husband; and one sister, Patricia Harvey. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, William Nuel and Tellie Ann Hicks, William Ellis and Effie Elizabeth Schofield, and one nephew, Kevin Lee Suggs.

Brenda is survived by her mother, Josephine Suggs, Houston, Texas; three stepchildren, Clyde Alan Hill and Charlene Joy, both of Idaho, and Rhonda Grace, of California; seven step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Anna Lou Caudill, Ava, Rita S. Ege, Ozark, Dorothy Phillips, Bruner, and Linda Medlock; four brothers, Richard Lynn Suggs, Plentywood, Mont., Robert Lee Suggs, Cowgill, Mo., William Ellis Suggs, Houston, Texas, and Earl Edward Suggs, Ava; a brother-in-law, Leo Hill, Mtn. Grove, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Grisham officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Carole Sund Memorial Reward Foundation at the funeral home.

Ethmer Abraham Peak, 80

Ethmer Abraham Peak,80, Ava, the son of Otto “Bud” and Mary Louisa (Manning) Peak, was born May 19, 1925, in Douglas County and departed this life Aug. 20, 2005, at Rocky Ridge Manor in Mansfield where he had been a resident for the past five months.

On Feb. 1, 1962, he was united in marriage to Gladys Conklin by the Rev. Ernest Hamby at the Ava Courthouse. This union was blessed with a son and a daughter.

Ethmer was saved and baptized in 1964. He became an ordained deacon. He drove the church bus for several years, and was faithful to God and attended church regularly for as long as his health allowed.

He was a dairy farmer and a milk hauler for six years. He then worked at Spalding Sporting Goods in Ava until it closed. He became employed in the Ava School System and retired after 13 years of service.

Ethmer took great pride in his vegetable gardens. He especially enjoyed working in the garden with his grandchildren. He loved sharing his fruits and vegetables with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Thomas, Jesse and Arvel; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Lila Fay.

Survivors include his loving wife, Gladys, of the home; one son, Charles Peak and wife, Susan, of Missouri; one daughter, Tammy Nell and husband, David, of Kansas; seven grandchildren, Misty, Alicia, Valerie, Katie, Jeremy, Jacob and Dereck; one sister, Lily Merriett, of Seymour; a host of nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Robert Roberts and John Moles officiating.

Burial will follow in the Turkey Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to The Gideons International, c/o Barnes Family Funeral Home.

Roxie May Hollaway, 91

Roxie May Hollaway was born on Jan. 17, 1914, and was less than a year old when her family moved from Squires, Mo., to California to become part of the citrus growing culture in Claremont.

Ms. Hollaway died on Aug. 13, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Ontario, Calif., at the age of 91.

She attended Claremont Grammar School and graduated from Claremont High School in 1931.

Ms. Hollaway loved acting in plays and spent many nights at the Fox Theater in Pomona, Calif. She also loved Hollywood.

She attended Pomona Junior College where she studied business. She used her education in a clerical position at Aerojet in Azusa, Calif., and kept books at Wright Brothers and Rice Furniture in Pomona, Calif.

After her third marriage, to James Hollaway, she moved to Wheatland, Calif., for a number of years and was a member of Wheatland Baptist Church.

She then moved back to the Claremont area after Mr. Hollaway’s death in 2003.

Ms. Hollaway is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Lucille Hall, of Upland, Calif; her grandsons, Rodney, Burnie and Erick Swaleson, of Tacoma, Wash.; two stepsons, John D. Hollaway, Felton, Calif., and James Hollaway, Whiteford, Md.; four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

A visitation was held at Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona, Calif., on Aug. 19, and services were held and interment made at Pomona Valley Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Lewis Herman Huff, 93

Lewis Herman Huff, 93 years, was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Ava.

He passed away on Aug. 17, 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anglo and Gertrude Turner Huff; two brothers, John Huff and Maynard Huff; two sisters, Evelyn Whittenburg and Betty McGuire; a daughter, Vada Lee Graham; and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Elsie Sellers Huff, of the home; two daughters, Sue Bacorn, of Springfield, and Lucille Jenkins and husband, Tony, of Ava; a brother, Junior Huff and wife, Marie, of Ava; two sisters, Mary Whitworth, of Colton, Calif. and Velma Conklin, of Ashland, Oreg.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Lewis was a lifelong farmer and loved fox hunting and being with family. He was an avid checker player winning many tournaments.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.

Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.

Lois Eleanor Allen, 83

Lois Eleanor Allen the daughter of Forest Camp and Florence (Privett) Camp was born July 3, 1922 in Douglas County, Missouri and departed this life Aug. 20, 2005 at the age of 83.

Lois was a life-long resident of the Ava area.

March 19, 1943 Lois and Chester Allen were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, two daughters were born.

Lois was a member of the Church of Christ and did volunteer work for the church. She also worked as a dietitian at the Ava nursing home for over 20 years. Lois loved her family and gardening.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Chester; her parents; and one brother, Lloyd Camp.

Her survivors include, two daughters, Pat Byrd and husband, Leonard, Ozark; Janice Young and husband, George, Ava; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one step great-great granddaughter; one brother, Duane Camp and wife, Pat, Sedalia; a sister-in-law, Allene Camp, Ava; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Harlin Howerton and Brad Smith officiating.

Interment was in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday at 10 a.m. to service time.

Memorials may be made to The Gideons International.

Truman John Loesch, 76

Truman John Loesch, the son of Charles Loesch and Kate (Garrison) Loesch, was born May 17, 1929 in Cole County, Missouri, and departed this life Aug. 22, 2005 in Springfield, at the age of 76.

Truman was a resident of the Ava area for the past 20 years moving here from Kansas City. He was employed as a lineman with General Motors for 34 years and a member of AA for 15 years.

On Aug. 9, 1948, Truman and Erma Jean McKinney were united in marriage in Cole County, and to this union, two daughters were born.

Truman was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Truman was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Norvil; one granddaughter, Andrea Sawyers; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Montana Fleetwood.

Truman is survived by his wife, Erma Jean of the home, Ava; two daughters, Sharon K. Loesch and partner, Dean Williams, Ava, and Carol A. Riggs, Ava; five grandchildren, Tabetha Smith, Vanessa Wilson, Storm Maggard, Mandi Fleetwood and Gary Loesch; 15 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Joseph, Stephen, Sarah and Alexander Smith, Ronnie Jones, Tosh, Breanna, Robert Jr. and Evan Maggard, Kristan Wilson, Karrie and Kyle Maggard, Marcus and Brittany Cox; three brothers, Ralph Loesch, Victoria, Texas, Donald Loesch, Rocky Mount, and Robert Loesch, of Missouri; eight sisters, Ada Jones, Buena Park, Calif., Shirley Wekamp, Colorado Springs, Colo., Georgie Sipple, Florrissant, Leona Davis, St. Charles, Vera Gilpin, Jefferson City, Mary McKinney, Wentzville, Jerene Becthel, Eldon, Nora Propts, Norton Shores, Mich.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 p.m. until service time.

Memorials may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous of Ava.

Cinita B. Nave, 91

Cinita Blanche Nave, the daughter of Charles M. Spurlock and Grace (Lytle) Spurlock, was born March 28, 1914 in Ava, and departed this life Aug. 18, 2005 at the age of 91.

On Aug. 19, 1929 Cinita and H.L. "Jake" Nave were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, a daughter was born.

Cinita was a resident of the Ava area for most of her life.

She was employed with Rawlings Sporting Goods as a serg operator for several years.

Preceding Cinita in death were her husband, Jake, her parents and two sisters, Imogene Eagan and Betty Spurlock.

Survivors include a daughter, Treva Fulton, Troutdale, Ore.; one grandson, Larry H. Fulton and wife, Christina; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Taylor and Stacy; two sisters, Mary Lou Ousley and husband, Donnie, and Martha Stadler and husband, Edward “Boots” Stadler; and a host of other friends and relatives.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Robert Roberts officiating.

Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday from 1 p.m. until service time in the funeral home.
