Frank D. Stutts, 68

Aug 25, 2005

Frank D. Stutts, son of Mike A. Stutts and Julia G. Winn Stutts, was born on Sept. 15, 1936, in Charleston, S.C., and passed away on Aug. 20, 2005, in St. John's Hospital in Springfield at the age of 68.

Frank was a tree trimmer and a resident of the Ava area for 16 years moving from Kansas City.

Frank and Florence Rowe were united in marriage on June 10, 1961 in Kansas City, and to this union, five children were born.

Frank was a Christian.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jack, Louis and Phillip Stutts.

He is survived by his wife, Florence of the home in Ava; five children, Jason Stutts, Belton, David Stutts, Ava, Mrs. Brenda Osborn, Dora, Charley Stutts, Drexel, and Debbie Stutts, Ava; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; four brothers, Herbert Stutts, Edisto Island, S.C., Paul Stutts, K.C., Robert Stutts, Belton, and Jimmy Stutts, Grain Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Julia Diggers and Mrs. Mary Williams, both of Charleston, S.C., and Virginia Stutts, state of California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug., 24, at 2 p.m. at the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Gary Stigall officiating.

Interment was in the Ava Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

James Lee Robertson, 72

Memorial services for James Lee Robertson, 72, of Carmichael, Calif., will be held Sept. 17, at Robla School in Carmichael.

Born July 28, 1933, at Mansfield, he was the son of Sherman Blaine and Anna Bennett Robertson.

He died at his home on Sept. 10, 2005.

He attended Anchor country school in Douglas County, before moving at an early age to California where he lived until his death.

He served in the U.S. Army with tours of duty in Germany in the early 1950s. He retired in 1988 after serving more than 30 years as the supervisor of the shipping and maintenance departments of McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, Calif.

Jim enjoyed travel, hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Wanda; two daughters, Vicki and Cari; one son, Jimmy, of the home; two stepdaughters, Debbie and Lorna; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Jean and Wes Robinson, Cusick, Wash.; two nieces; two aunts, Jessie Purtle, of Ozark, and Lela Robertson, of Ava; and numerous cousins in the Douglas County area.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James "Moe" Cooper, 77

James "Moe" Cooper, 77, Springfield, was born Aug. 17, 1928, and passed away at 1:10 a.m., Sept. 7, 2005, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He stopped at nothing to ensure his family's happiness. His door was always open to a person in need, be it a friend or a total stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E. H. and Dezzie Cooper; and one brother, Cleo Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cooper; daughter, Terri and husband, Jim Snow; son, Mark Cooper and son, Mike Cooper and wife, Nigel; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della Rutherford, Fayetteville, Ark., and Gay Freeman, Dallas, Texas; and one brother, Bob Cooper, Ava.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 10, in Greenlawn Funeral Home North with burial in White Chapel.

Lloyd A. McCleskey, 77

Lloyd A McCleskey, 77, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, N.M., died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at his home.

Lloyd was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Seminole, Okla.

He retired in 1982 from civil service at Seal Beach, Calif., where he had been an equipment mechanic. His career with civil service totaled over 30 years. Lloyd was a very caring and kind individual. He was respected and loved by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, (daughter of the late Grant and Della Ward, of Ava) of the family home; a son, Aubrey Dean McCleskey, of Anaheim, Calif.; a daughter, Caren Vigil and her husband, Vince, of Orange, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Deb Sanderson and her husband, Jim, of Tularosa, N.M., and Tammy Walker and her husband Steve, of Rochelle, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m., in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating.

Interment was in Monte Vista Cemetery in New Mexico.

Georganna L. Lucero, 38

Georganna L. Lucero, the daughter of George Lucero and Sharon (Watson) Lucero, was born Dec. 23, 1966, in West Virginia, and departed this life Sept. 6, 2005, at the age of 38.

Georganna was a resident of the Ava area for the past 13 years, moving here from Denver, Colo. Georganna was employed as a bail bondsman. She was a homemaker and mother.

Georganna attended the Baptist Church.

Georganna was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Lucero, in 1997.

She is survived by three children, Tawnie Lucero, Springfield, Josh Christensen and Veronica Christensen, both of West Plains; two stepsons, Boo Christensen, Denver, Colo., Colby Christensen, Lincoln, Neb.; one grandson, Conner Rogers, Springfield; her father, George Lucero, Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Shane and Bobby Lucero, both of Denver, Colo.

Services will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Richard Rhoades officiating.

Interment will follow in the Arno Cemetery.

Charles "Shorty" Barr, 75

Charles "Shorty" Barr, 75, died Tuesday, August 31, 2005 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Ft. Dodge, Kansas.

He was born September 26, 1929 at Arkansas City, Kansas, the son of Charles Russell and Newella Powell Barr. A Ft. Dodge resident since 1995, moving from Arkansas City, he was a mechanic for General Electric, retiring in 1995.

He served in the United States Air Force from October 1946 to October 1967, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On December 21, 1984, he married Janie Marie Bennett at Arkansas City.

Survivors include: his wife Janie M. Barr of Squires, Missouri; 2 sons, Michael Barr, Arizona and Scott Barr, Pensacola, Florida; 1 daughter, Connie Cook, Arizona; 3 step-sons, Johnny Round, Wichita and George Round and Brian Round both of Arizona; a step-daughter, Dora Jean Burris, Kansas; a sister, Mary Lou Williams, Arkansas City; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-daughter, Stephanie Stewart.

Private family burial will be in the Murray Cemetery, Squires, Missouri.

There will be no public visitation.

Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, Kansas is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Walker Woodruff, 94

Howard Walker Woodruff died on August 20, 2005, in Independence, Mo.

Howard was born in Independence on October 7, 1910, to Myrtle and Walker Woodruff.

He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1930, Central Methodist College at Fayette, in 1935, and Perkins School of Theology at SMU, Dallas, Texas in 1940.

Howard married Audrey Lee Wagner from Stanley, Kans. on August 22, 1933. They were a “team” in the ministry and always considered their appointment a joint service in their Christian faith.

From the time he was seven years old, Howard knew he was going to be a Methodist Minister. He is one of the last of the real “circuit riders”. All of the churches he served were in Missouri, which included service in Ava for five years from 1943-1948, and during World War II, Howard also taught in Ava High School.

Audrey, his wife, preceded him in death in 1996, and one son, William Walker Woodruff in 2000.

He is survived by one daughter, Carole Anne Golden of Independence, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Terry Woodruff of Raytown, Mo.; one brother, William Harold Woodruff, Independence; and a brother-in-law, Rev. Charles Burner of Kansas City, Mo.

Howard enjoyed the fellowship and friendship of the community. He had a great thirst for knowledge and enjoyed writing poetry. The “idea man” was what folks called him. Howard had a smile and laugh and caring love that will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held August 24, at Christ United Methodist Church, Independence, Mo.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery on Noland Road, Independence, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be made to a church of choice, or Camp Galilee, P. O. Box 520, El Dorado Springs, Mo. 64744.

Walter Ivan Bishop, 84

Walter Ivan Bishop, the son of Clarence Bishop and Daisy (King) Bishop, was born March 29, 1921 and passed into eternal peace on Aug. 26, 2005. Walter was a loved and respected resident of the Sweden community.

A World War II Army veteran, Walter served from July 14, 1942 through Dec. 3, 1945, as a surgical technician with the 19th General Hospital. Much of this time was spent in France and England. Walter loved to share his experiences there with family and friends and this had a great impact in his own life.

Walter and Fern (Anderson) Bishop were united in marriage on July 29, 1945 in Abilene, Kan. and have been fortunate to share 59 years together.

Employed with the Marvin Barnes Co. for 21 years, Walter then retired to spend time on his farm, fishing and visiting with family and friends. He was a very well respected neighbor and was always eager to lend a helping hand to neighbors and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Walter attended church and was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Opal Reed and Betty Jean Scott.

Survivors include his wife, Fern, of the home; one daughter, Sue Wheeler, Ava, and one son, Don Bishop and wife, Reba, Ava; two grandsons, Brian Sherrill, Ava, and Kris Bishop, Springfield; three sisters, Laverne Hutchison, Ava: Pauline Winkler, Independence, Kansas and Patsy Hinman, also of Kansas.

Services were held Monday, August 29, at 10 a.m. at the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Grisham officiating.

Interment was in the Ava Cemetery under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Full military honors were conducted by American Legion Post 112 and Ava VFW Post 5993.

Memorials may be made to the Vera Cruz Cemetery, c/o Sue Potts, or Community Hospices of America, 807 N. Main, Suite l, Mtn. Grove, MO. 65711.

Bessie Alice Cox, 89

Bessie Alice Cox, the daughter of Lane Fredrick Morse and Ina Elnora (Grammar) Morse, was born March 13, 1916, in Hastings, Iowa, and departed this life Sept. 22, 2005, at the age of 89.

Bessie and Clyde W. Cox were united in marriage Jan. 4, 1941, in Rockport, MO.

Bessie was a resident of Ava for the past 50 years, moving here from Iowa. Bessie was a housewife, farmer and worked in institutions as a caregiver.

She was a Christian and attended Brushyknob and Bethany Baptist churches.

Bessie loved horses, animals, being outside and working in her flower garden.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; her parents; one brother, Raymond Morse; one sister, Leatta Fleming; one infant child, Mary Ann; a stepson, Ervin, and a step-grandson.

Bessie is survived by a stepdaughter, Phyllis Blockmon, of California; two sisters, Waneta Blackman, Ava, and Ina Winters, Oakland, Iowa; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Paul Welch and Oscar Cunningham officiating.

Interment was in the Burdett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Fidel Zamora, 72

Fidel Zamora, 72, Ava, passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Fidel was born Feb. 28, 1933, in San Juan, Texas, the son of Francisco and Juanita Vazques (Miranda) Zamora.

On Aug. 28, 1976, he was united in marriage to Carmen M. Navarrete in Mexico.

Fidel spent most of his life living in Chicago, Ill., before moving to Ava in 1990. In 1996, he became a business owner and operator of Lili's Steak House.

Fidel enjoyed the restaurant business where his gentle spirit, warm continuous smile and friendly handshake welcomed many friends. He also was a school bus driver for the Ava school system for over seven years, often rewarding the students with candy and special treats. He worked long hours but found time to hunt and fish for relaxation. His life overflowed with care and determination for his family by always supporting them with guidance in every worthy endeavor. In spite of his many accomplishments, Fidel praised his family and grandchildren above all else. Fidel was also a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church of Ava.

Fidel was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jesus Zamora.

He is lovingly survived by his wife Carmen; two sons, Hugo Ariel Zamora, of Atlanta, Ga., and Pablo Zamora, of Ava; three daughters, Andrea Zamora and Lizette Zamora, both of Ava, and Evelyn Johnson of Springfield; three grandchildren Tristean Zamora, Alex Zamora and Gabriel Johnson; brothers and sisters, Martha Azpeitia, Elena Zamora, Francisco Zamora, Roberto Zamora, Maria Zamora, and Izabell Zamora; a sister-in-law Marina Navarrete; a brother-in-law Avelino Azpeitia; a daughter-in-law Veronica Zamora; a son-in-law Mark Johnson; several caring nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

A memorial prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava.

Memorial funeral mass service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in St. Leo's Catholic Church of Ava under the direction and care of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with Mike Powell as celebrant.

The family requests donations in Fidel's honor be made to Neighbor Helping Neighbor.
