Stout, Harold "E.T.", 82

Harold "E.T." Stout, 82, of Nixa, passed away at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at the St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield.

He was born in Blanche, Mo., on Aug. 27, 1922, to Jake and Ada (Bell) Stout. He was the grandson of Charley and Pauline (Berry) Stout and Owen and Caroline (Gunter) Bell.

E. T. spent most of his life in Douglas County, and was married to Golda Thurman on June 10, 1942, in Drury.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. Following his discharge, they moved to Wilder, Idaho and lived there for a few years. They returned to Missouri and E.T. was employed by the Missouri Highway Department. They later moved to Richville, Mo., and operated a general store for several years before moving to Mtn. Grove, where he served on the city council for many years.

E.T. was a minister for several years and a long time member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove and also a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge. He was an avid reader and enjoyed telling stories to his family and friends about his childhood. He wrote many poems about his family and community that he lived in over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Golda Stout, of their home in Nixa; a daughter, Linda Collins and her husband Doyle, of Nixa; a son, Kenny Stout and his wife Vicky, of Ava; one brother, Hugh Stout, of Drury; one sister, Vernice Uhlman, of Drury; five grandchildren, Stephanie Downing and her husband Jeff, Jodi Snider and her husband Scott, Tina Boyd and her husband Andy, T. J. Stout and his wife Courtney, and Missie Keith; 12 great-grandchildren, McKanzie Downing, Jordan Downing, Colby Snider, Collin Snider, Myah Snider, Tyler Boyd, Cassey Boyd, Kennen Boyd, Gaven Keith, Braden Keith, Tidas Stout and Tator Stout.

Although E.T. has passed away he is alive in each of his family and friends who will remember him in their own special way.

Funeral services for E.T. Stout were held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2 p.m., in the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove with Rev. R. E. Helsley officiating. Full military rites were given at the cemetery by the American Legion Post 30 with Jared Moore serving as bugler.
Burial was in the Blanche Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt-Bradley Funeral Home.

Philip S. Huffman, 61

Philip S. Huffman, 61, of Hartville, died early Tuesday morning in Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 14, in the Hartville Freewill Baptist Church under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Steele Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry, of the home; a daughter, Hilary Sommer and husband, Lyndon, of St. Louis; a son, Grierson Huffman and wife, Bettrys, of Centreville, Va.; his mother, Lylian Huffman, Hartville; a sister, Marilyn Huffman, Springfield; and a number of cousins and many friends.

The family requests memorial contributions be left at the funeral home for Legal Aid of Southwest Missouri; Wright County Children’s Home; United Methodist Church of Hartville; or Wright County Historical Society.

Johnnie Sawyer, 71

Johnnie William Sawyer, the son of Rex Sawyer and Thelma Adams Sawyer, was born Aug. 1, 1933, in Goodhope, Missouri, and departed this life Jan. 12, 2005, at the age of 71 years 5 months and 11 days.

Johnnie was a resident of the Ava area for most of his life. Johnnie served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 112. May 28, 1958, Johnnie and Joretta Walker were united in marriage in Goodhope, and to this union, two children were born. Johnnie was owner of a Sawyers Station and Used Cars and always enjoyed trading. On his days off he enjoyed fishing and playing golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Johnnie is survived by his wife, Joretta, of the home, Ava; one son, Rex and wife, Sarah Sawyer, Ava; one daughter, Johnna Beth and husband, Jeff Russell, Republic, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Fallon and Jessie Sawyer, Ava; Lindsey and Eryn Russell, Republic, Mo., and one sister.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava with the Rev. Nolan Carrier, Rev. Robert Roberts and Rev. B.J. Evans officiating. Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Nora Alice Marsh, 87

Nora Alice Marsh, the daughter of Harbor Russel Gladden and Dillia Sallee Gladden, was born Jan. 18, 1917, in Longrun, Mo., and departed this life Jan. 8, 2005, at the age of 87.

Nora and Thomas Marsh were united in marriage April 18, 1940, in Lutie, Mo., and to this union, a son was born.

Nora was a homemaker and loved quilting. She was a member of the Longrun General Baptist Church.

Nora was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ressie Gladden and Ruby Smith.

Her survivors include her husband, Thomas Marsh, and her son, Ron Marsh, both of Ava.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Ava Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.

Interment was under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Opal E. Evans, 94

Opal Evans, the daughter of Clarence Elliott and Fannie Elizabeth Haynes Elliott, was born March 1, 1910, in Vera Cruz, and departed this life Jan. 8, 2005, at the age of 94.

Opal was a resident of Ozark for the past 30 years.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Evansdale Church, and a past member of the Eastern Star.

On May 18, 1929, Opal and Thomas Lee Evans were united in marriage in Cheney, Mo., and to this union, five children were born.

Opal enjoyed quilting, sewing and taking care of family.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; two sisters; a daughter, Deloris Mincks; an infant son, Charles Don; a granddaughter; and her husband, Thomas Lee Evans. Opal is survived by two daughters, Joyce and husband, Bill Lee, Nixa, and Shirley Hutchison, Ozark; one son, Tony and wife, Roma Evans, Ozark; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Mears, Ozark; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Freeda Holt officiating.

Interment was in the Evans Cemetery.

Lula M. Hodges, 78

Lula M. Hodges, daughter of John Hammons and Mary Ann Nance Hammons, was born on May 25,1926 in Witty, Mo., in Douglas County, and passed away on Jan. 6, 2005, in Ava, at the age of 78.

Lula was a resident of the Ava community for the past 10 years moving from Bradleyville.

She was a housewife.

On June 20, 1945, Lula and Lewis Hodges were united in marriage at Witty, and to this union, six children were born.

Lula was a member of the Highway Church of the Nazarene, Ava, and a member of the Happy Homemakers of Ava.

She loved to quilt, and always looked forward to church trips.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis in 1994; a son, Dale, in 1996; twin infant daughters; two brothers and one sister.

Her survivors include four sons and their spouses, Harvey and Susan Hodges, Bradleyville, Randy "Boon" and Dawn Hodges, Chadwick, Jerry and Jackie Hodges, Bradleyville, and Tom and Beverly Hodges, of Squires; one daughter and husband, Shirley and Jackie Hall, Bradleyville; one daughter-in-law and husband, Kim and Scott Davis, Ava; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters and their spouses, Maxine and Delmar Hodges, Springfield, and Cecil and Fred Sartin, Douglas, Kan., one brother and wife, Howard and Pat Hammons, Wichita, Kan.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Dustin Ledford officiating.

Interment was in the Mills Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Mills Cemetery.

Daphna J. Hathcock, 87

Daphna J. Hathcock, 87, of Gainesville, died on Jan. 10, 2005, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

She was born Sept. 4, 1917, to Elisha and Mary (Kyle) Luna in Ozark County.

Daphna and Arvis L. Hathcock were married Jan. 26, 1934.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Don and Aletta Hathcock and Leroy and Delores Hathcock, all of Springfield; and one daughter, Phyllis Hathcock, of Gainesville; six grandchildren, Jeff Hathcock and wife, Barbara, Tulsa, Okla., Diana Radke and husband, Mike, Rogersville, Timothy Hathcock and wife, Rebecca, Republic, Alan Hathcock, Springfield, Anthony Hathcock, Gainesville, and Timothy Kerr, Gainesville; three great-grandchildren, Taryn Quessenberry and husband, Josh, Devin Radke, and Eli Hathcock; one step-great-grandson, Keith Jones and wife, Heather, Norman, Okla.; one great-great-granddaughter, Kennedy Quessenberry.

Daphna did child care for some 20 years in her home.

She loved to piece quilts by hand and made many beautiful quilts for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters, seven half brothers and sisters, her husband, of 50 years, and an infant son, Jerry.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Church of Christ in Gainesville with burial in Patrick Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Gainesville.

Ruth Loraine McIntosh, 84

Ruth Loraine McIntosh, daughter of the late Edmond Luther and Blanche (Shanklin) Shores, was born on March 29, 1920, in Wichita, Kan., and departed this life on Jan. 2, 2005, at her residence in Ava, following a battle with cancer.

She was 84. Ruth grew up and attended school in Quitman, Mo.

She was united in marriage to Loren G. McIntosh on Nov. 26, 1938, in Maryville, Mo.

Two children were born to this union.

Mr. McIntosh passed away in 1999.

Ruth enjoyed being outdoors, especially when tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, working in her yard, and on her farm.

She was a loving mother who enjoyed taking care of her family and spending time with them.

She also enjoyed visiting with her many neighbors and friends.

Ruth had attended the Christian Church as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her son, Lewis McIntosh and his wife, Agnes, of Springfield; her daughter, Donna Brown and husband, Roy, of Ava; two step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Retherford Cemetery, Norwood, with the Rev. Dustin Ledford officiating.

Burial was in the Retherford Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt-Bradley Funeral Home of Mtn. Grove.

Macey Suzanne Fritz, Infant

Macey Suzanne Fritz, the stillborn daughter of Shawn and Brenda Willard Fritz, was delivered Dec. 31, 2004.

Although Macey never knew anything of this world she will always be remembered by those who loved her and will not forget her.

She will be remembered by her parents, Shawn and Brenda Fritz, and her brother, Curtis, and sister, Abby Fritz, all of Ava; her maternal and paternal grandparents, Wayne and Cheryl Goodall and Dennis and Susan Fritz, all of Ava; her maternal and paternal great-grandparents, Larry and Karen Jones, of Moscow Mills, Mo., and Ray and Vi Fritz, of Ava; also by her maternal uncles, Nathan Goodall, Steve Goodall, Thomas and Brandy Goodall, and Kenny Willard; and her paternal aunt and her husband, Dawn and Casey Hayes.

She will also be remembered by a host of other relatives and friends.

Macey was preceded by her paternal great-grandparents, Earl and Mary Darby, of Ava.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Ava Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating.

Services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava.

Leola Wintjen Hale, 73

Leola Wintjen Hale was born Nov. 24, 1931, in Oklahoma, the daughter of Gid and Ida Rogers Bice.

She departed this life on Dec. 31, 2004, at the age of 73.

Leola lived most of her life in the Ava area.

She married Johnny Wintjen in Moline, Ill., in 1957.

Leola enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and talked often of her small dog, Nancy.

Leola was of the Pentecostal faith.

Leola is survived by four daughters, Leona Hamilton and her husband, Thomas, of Claremore, Okla, Darlene Carnall and husband, Harry, Mansfield, Kathy Ronzonleon and husband, David, Mansfield, and Wanda Ramsey and husband, Bob, Nixa; two sons, Earl and Brenda Brown, of Nixa, and Johnny and Marion Wintjen, of Ava.

She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, along with two sisters, Wanda Andrews, Kerrville, Texas, and Kay Peak, Ava; one brother, Eldon Bice, Ava; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating.

Interment was in Huffman Cemetery.

Services are conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.

Doris Elizabeth Smith Lisby, 89

Doris Elizabeth Smith Lisby passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in her daughter’s home in Ava.

The daughter of Nelson Smith and Alice May Reynolds Smith, Doris was born Sept. 3, 1915, in Rochester, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.

Her father was a direct descendant from England.

Doris was the wife of the late Leo Lisby.

They were blessed with two daughters, Alice and Betty.

Doris and Leo were longtime residents of Ava where they were successful business owners of Ava Hatchery for 32 years.

They were known by their saying, "An Ozark chick is seldom sick."

They were true soulmates, and members of the First Southern Baptist Church. Doris is survived by two daughters, Alice Marie (Lisby) Holbert and her husband, Dick, of Springfield, and Betty (Lisby) Melton and husband, Leroy, of Ava; grandchildren, Maria Page, Wright City, Mo., Kirk Holbert and wife, Trish, Springfield, Elizabeth Box and husband, Mike, David Melton and wife, Brooke, Ava; and great-grandchildren, Paul, Sarah, Aaron, Jimmy, Zeke and Kate.

Doris also loved all her nieces and nephews.

Doris survived cancer for one year after she was given three months by her doctors.

Services were at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 3, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Interment was in Ava Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
