Calvin Reed Lafferty, 78, of Princeton, Iowa, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday evening, Nov. 17, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Nelson Funeral Home in DeWitt.
Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park.
The Rev. Larry Pruitt of God’s Family Baptist Church, Grand Mound, Iowa, officiated.
Calvin was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Ava, the son of George and Stella (Pruitt) Lafferty.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy (Williams) Lafferty on July 3, 1948, in Ava.
Mr. Lafferty was a supervisor in the Donohoo Steel Heat Treating Plant, in Bettendorf, Iowa, for 33 years, until his retirement in 1987.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; his five children, Margaret (Marion) Pinter, Princeton, Iowa, Joyce (Stephen) Pinter, Bettendorf, Iowa, Linda (Dennis) Maynard, Princeton, Iowa, Ronald (Rhonda) Lafferty, Black River Falls, Wisc., and Michael Lafferty, of Florida; two sisters, Wilma Jean (Kinny) Kesterson, Springfield, and Oatie Muse, Nixa; a sister-in-law, Lucille Lafferty, Springfield; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and Toots, his friend and companion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Reba Maxine Hobbs, 82

Reba Maxine (Hamby) Hobbs, 82, Springfield, departed from this life at 10:53 a.m. Dec. 17, 2005, in St. John's Hospital.
She was born March 6, 1923, at Ava, the daughter of Earnest (E.H.) and Edith (Robertson) Hamby.
Reba married Louis Glenn Hobbs on March 7, 1942, and to this union, three children were born.
She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and a faithful follower of Christ.
She moved to the Springfield area in 1956, where she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Reba was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Glenn Hobbs; her parents; three brothers, Ray, Rex and Russell; and one sister, Remah Hamby.
Survivors include a son, Bill and spouse, Linda, of Springfield; two daughters, Glenda Sue and spouse, Gordon Elliott, of Springfield and Jana and spouse, Roger Copeland, of Willard; nine grandchildren, Todd and Andrea Elliott, Tara and spouse, Jeff Ford, Rob and spouse, Shannon Hobbs, Suzie and spouse, Curt Ringgold, Shawna and spouse, Shaun Wirth, Carisa and spouse, Mark Long, Ashley Hughes, and Erin and Brandi Copeland; 14 great-grandchildren, Erica and Alex Elliott, Colin Caples, Dalton, Kaitlyn, Denton and Drake Ford, Brianna Hobbs, Kayla and Jacob Winter, Trey Ringgold, Rachel and Wyatt Wirth, and Madison Long; one sister, Reta Watterson, of Mansfield; one brother, Ronald and spouse, Phyllis Hamby, of West Plains; one sister-in-law, Amy Hobbs, of Ava; many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, Springfield.
Burial was in Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
Ruth Potter, 76

Ruth Potter the daughter of John Raymond David Harnden and Vida V. (Spurlock) Harnden was born Feb. 21, 1929 in Ava, and departed this life Dec. 23, 2005 in Forsyth, at the age of 76.
Ruth grew up in St. Louis and Ava community. She was a resident of Bradleyville, for the past 38 years. Ruth had worked as a manager in Famous Barr Clothing Store and managed a restaurant in Bradleyville. She retired from Hagale Industries.
On Dec. 4, 1961 Ruth and Claude Ralph Potter were united in marriage in Miami, OK.
Mr. Potter preceded her in death Aug. 11, 2005.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, John Harnden and a nephew.
Ruth loved her cats, enjoyed listening to the radio and going into town and visiting.
Ruth is survived by close friends, Denise and Joey Aldridge and son, Bobby, Forsyth; several nieces and nephews, Rick, Phil and Jeff Harnden, Jayma Potter, Monty Valentine, Pamela Caswell, Shurdena, LaRaine and Lacey Evans; sister-in-laws, Earlean Evans and Sue Valentine; and other relatives and friends.
Memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Bill Austin officiating.
Virgil Lowell Adams, 84

Virgil Lowell Adams, the son of Luther Adams and Mary (Baird) Adams, was born Aug. 23, 1921, in McClurg, and departed this life Dec. 28, 2005, at the age of 84.
Virgil was a lifelong resident of the McClurg community. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army.
On Oct. 10, 1942, Virgil and Pauline Southards were united in marriage in Selah, Wash. Virgil and Pauline were blessed with six children.
Virgil was employed with the U.S. Forest Service, Fasco Industries and in farming. He enjoyed gardening, riding his four-wheeler, hunting and being with all of his family.
Virgil was saved and later baptized in 1999 by Floyd Roberts.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Lester, and a sister, Betty.
Virgil is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline; six children and their spouses, Shirley and John Scisciani, Nixa, Darrell and Beverly Adams, Springfield, Kenny and Evelyn Adams, Ava, Jackie and Gail Adams, Bradleyville, Steve and Jenny Adams, Ava, Sherry and Jr. (Mike) Twenter, Lamar; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two on the way; one brother, Neal Adams, McClurg; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava with the Revs. John Lee Comer and Riley Hall officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bethel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Alpha Roberta Nelson, 89

Alpha Roberta Nelson, 89, the fourth daughter of George Price and Minnie (Kastening) Price was born Sept. 30, 1916 at Rockbridge, Mo.
Surrounded by her family, Alpha went home to be with her Lord on Dec. 13, 2005.
Alpha was a life long resident of the area.
On July 19, 1947 Alpha and Otto Nelson were united in marriage in Ava. Alpha and Otto were blessed with a daughter.
Alpha was employed at the drug store as a clerk for many years. She enjoyed visiting with friends, family and neighbors.
Alpha was a member of the Ava General Baptist Church.
Alpha was preceded in death by her husband, Otto in l973. Also preceding in death were her parents, four sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice and husband, Bill Chainey, Richmond, Mo.; three grandchildren, Tim Chainey, Rogersville, Brian and Connie Chainey, Springfield, and Stacy and Steve Hatfield, Clever; six great-grandchildren, Shelli Jo, Colton, Emily, Jelena, Josh, and Jeremy; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn and Father Glen Dale Hartley officiating.
Interment was in the Ava Cemetery.
Douglas Wayne Porter, 43

Douglas Wayne Porter, son of Carlos Pat Porter and Melba Louise (Lakey) Porter was born on Nov. 14, 1962 in Springfield, and passed away on Dec. 15, 2005 in Ava, at the age of 43 years.
Doug was a life-long resident of Douglas County. He worked in many different occupations, some of which included farming, operating heavy equipment and the Missouri Conservation Department. He was also involved with the hurricane cleanup efforts.
Doug was saved at Brushyknob Church and baptized at Vera Cruz in 2000. Doug loved his family very much and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, helping children and visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed listening to music and reading the Bible. Doug always requested prayer for himself and his family.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Autumn Louise.
He is survived by three brothers, Dennis Porter, Ava, Doy Porter, Ava, David Porter, Squires, two sisters, Diane Cheyney and Danita Porter both of Ava; nieces and nephews, Travis, Dillon and Danielle Cheyney, Miya Frye and great-niece Autum, Kiya Head, Lauren and Cole Porter, Kasha Porter, Shannon and Austin Porter, and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Danny Douglas and Eddie Bray officiating.
Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.
The family requests memorials to be given to Gideons International or Brushyknob Church Building Fund.
Marvin Vernon Stillings, 80

Marvin Vernon Stillings, 80, Salina, Kan., died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005.
Mr. Stillings was born July 26, 1925, in Ava.
He was a truck driver for Gooch Milling for 36 years, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie R., of the home; three sons, Harry D. Stillings, Dallas, Texas, Billy D. Johnston, of Hutchinson, Kan., and Byron J. Johnston, of Salina, Kan.; two daughters, Lynnea B. Clark, of Grandview, and Lee A. Burwell, of Salina, Kan.; three brothers, Vernie, of Salina, Kan., Dale, of Cassville, and Harrison of Springfield; five sisters, Bethene Mitchell, Hillsboro, Ore., Fern Dorman, Salina, Kan., Marie McDonald, Carrolton, Texas, Imogene Winters, Ozark, and Janet Jones, Oldfield; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, Salina, Kan. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.
Marian C. Pettit, 84

Marian Celesta Montgomery Pettit, 84, was born in Mountain Grove, on Nov. 9, 1921, to Bernice Montgomery Silverman and Charles "Monty" Montgomery.
She passed away on Dec. 11, 2005, surrounded by her family, at St. John's Regional Health Center in Joplin.
On Valentine's Day in 1939, Marian met Howard H. Pettit on a blind date while following his swing band.
They were married on Dec. 24, 1939, in front of the Christmas tree in the house of Lyle Pettit, Howard's brother. Howard and Marian had been married for almost 64 years when he passed away on December 14, 2002.
With the onset of World War II, Howard was inducted into the Army and stationed at Camp Kohler, in Sacramento, Calif. At this time, Marian was hired by the United States Government Rationing Board and worked for the Office of Price Administration in Sacramento for almost two years, issuing rationing stamps for consumer goods during wartime.
After Howard's tenure in the Army, they moved back to Ava, and Marian became actively involved as a partner with Howard in his theatre and dry cleaning businesses. She enjoyed the public and worked side by side with Howard until their retirement in 1984. She spent the next 18 years enjoying his company as well as her family and friends.
Marian was a Christian and a member of the Ava United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Chapter IH of PEO and the Ava Art Club.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved Howard.
She is survived by one son H. Bruce Pettit and wife, Pam, of Ava; two daughters, Carole Hayes, of Joplin, and Marsha Cowan and husband, Ron, of Rolla; five grandchildren Kelsea and Richelle Pettit of Ava, Shannon Bruffy and husband Bill of Oronogo, Matthew Cowan of Columbia, and Michael Cowan, of Rolla; two great-grandchildren, Bill and Emily Bruffy, of Oronogo; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in the Ava United Methodist Church under the direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Greg Dowler officiating.
Burial will follow in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Ava United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests the contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association c/o Research, the Douglas County Historical Society, or PEO, Chapter IH, program for continuing education.
Betty Louviva Farris, 73

Betty Louviva Farris died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at St. Anthony Hospital in Thornton. She was 73 years old.
She was born in Seymour, Mo. on April 23, 1932. Her parents were the late John W. and Verba (Wingo) Silvey.
After graduating from business college in Missouri, she married Wando G. Farris on June 9, 1961, in Ava, Mo.
In 1962, the Farrises came to Leadville, where Wando Farris went to work for the Climax Molybdenum Mine.
Together the couple had three children and Betty Farris spent the rest of her life making her famly her priority. She loved cooking and baking for them, and her wonderful fudge soon became legend. People would buy the ingredients and bring them over for Betty to work her magic. Visitors to the Farris home would walk in and ask, "Is there any fudge left?"
After raising her family, Betty went to work for the Delaware Hotel, where she worked for many years.
She was a sweet and gentle lady, who will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wando, who died on Nov. 3, 2004, and five siblings, sisters, Celo Self and Ruby Lockhart, and brothers, Buck, Aaron and Leonard Silvey.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Diane Farris, in Thornton; and sons, Steve Farris in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Darin Farris, in Georgetown; three grandchildren, Jodi, Aaron and Zoe Farris; one sister, Leona Comer, in Ava; and her aunt, Opha Denney, in Springfield, Mo.
A private family interment was held at the graveside at St. Joseph Cemetery on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005.
Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.
Ruth C. Bolte, 90

God reached down and gently lifted Ruth Caroline Bolte, 90, of Ava, Missouri, up to Heaven on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005.
She was born March 7, 1915, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the daughter of Fred and Caroline (Willrath) Sauerteig.
On July 24, 1944, in Spokane, Wash., she was united in marriage to Armin G. Bolte and to this union, three children were born.
After raising her children, Ruth began working for L. E. Reynolds Insurance Company in 1966, and was later employed with State Farm Insurance, retiring in 1980. Ruth led a rich Christian faithful life and was a positive influence on her friends and family. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a warrior for Jesus Christ, her Friend and Savior. She enjoyed serenity and beauty of her country home and always felt surrounded in the presence of God with her daily Bible devotions. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Armin in 1974, one son Jim Bolte, one brother Frederick Sauerteig, and one sister Laura Sauerteig.
In passing, she leaves wonderful memories. She is survived be her two daughters Barbara Holmes and husband, Larry, of Seymour, and Beth Butcher and husband, Stephen, of Sikeston; a daughter-in-law Mary Bolte, of Ava; nine grandchildren Joy, John, Mark, Wendy, Chris, Bill, Bob, Aimee, and Stephen; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Alice Sauerteig, of Indianapolis, Ind.; two nieces Carolyn Crawford and husband Jay of Pacific, and Margaret Clayton and husband Stuart of Granville, Ohio; and her church family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday), in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Dana Mark Wilkie officiating.
Burial will follow in the Turkey Creek Cemetery.
Visitation was held Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
