Lonnie Denney, 67

Feb 16, 2006

Lonnie Denney, son of Benjamin Franklin Denney and Ethel Cox Denney, was born on Jan. 30, 1939, in Ava, and passed away on Feb. 11, 2006, in Hartville, at the age of 67 years.

Lonnie grew up in the Ava area. He lived in Oklahoma for years and moved back to this area and resided in Hartville for two years where he had a small farm. Lonnie was a retired construction worker.

He was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Franklin Denney and Ethel Denney Hartley, one grandson, Matthew Adkins and one sister, Anna Lee Cornelson.

His survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Adkins and husband, Rocky, of Warsaw; three grandchildren, Rocky and Raquel Adkins both of Warsaw, and Jessica Adkins of Sedalia; one great-granddaughter, Madisyn Mabrey of Sedalia; two brothers, Ben and Sherman Denney, both of Ava; three sisters, Ruth Shumate and Ruby Graham, both of Ava, and Loetta Dugan of Lebanon; his ex-wife, Lura Denney, of Lebanon; good friends, Roy Dean Wilson and Mark Rice of Oklahoma, and Brian Fleming of Arkansas, good neighbors, the Hightower family and the Cantrell family, and many other relatives and friends.

Services were held Wednesday Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.

Memorials can be made to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla., in care of the funeral home.

Carrol Dean Swearengin, 66

Carrol Dean Swearengin, age 66, of Sparta, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.

He was born Nov. 8, 1939, in Ava, the son of Alma and Tressie (Nelson) Swearengin.

On May 20, 1963, he and Charlene Larson were united in marriage.

Mr. Swearengin retired from Consumers Warehouse. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Ava.

He was loved and will be missed by his family.

Survivors include, a son, Harold Swearengin, and daughter-in-law, Tina, Sparta; a daughter, Patricia Carr, and son-in-law, Glenn, Nixa; four grandchildren, Aaron Dean Carr, Danny Russell Carr, Austin Ray Swearengin and Erica Dawn Hanafin; a brother, Gene Swearengin, Ft. Worth, Texas; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

His wife, Charlene, passed away in 1994.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Helen Swearengin.

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 17, in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Rev. Carl Thompson officiating.

Burial followed in Swearengin Cemetery, Douglas County.

Ralph Henry McColgan, 77

Ralph Henry McColgan, son of Harry McColgan and Iva (Summers) McColgan, was born on Sept. 15, 1928 in Cairo, Ill., and passed away on Jan. 29, 2006, in Springfield, at the age of 77.

Ralph was a resident of Mansfield for eight years moving from Wasola. He was a retired iron worker. He was a veteran and served his country with the U.S. Air Force.

On July 6, 1979, Ralph and Sarah Horn were united in marriage in Birmingham, Ala.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents.

His survivors include his wife, Sarah of the home; two sons, Ralph McColgan Jr. and Harry McColgan, both of Bakersville, Calif.; two daughters, Annie and Cindy McColgan both of California; one sister, Francis Lamb, state of Florida; and other relatives and friends.

Cremation services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 3, in the Missouri Cemetery in Springfield.

Orville Monroe Turner, 83

Feb 23, 2006

Orville Monroe “O.M.” Turner, 83, of Taneyville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield.

He was born Oct. 14, 1922, the son of Chesley and Nora (Jennings) Turner, in Thornfield.

O.M. married Hazel Yvonne Clayton on May 2, 1942, in Forsyth, and they enjoyed more than 63 years together.

He served in the armed forces during World War II and was a life member of VFW Post 5993 of Ava.

Orville was a lifelong businessman of Taney County and a member of the General Baptist Church of Bradleyville.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of the home; three sons, Jerry Turner and wife, Joan, Ozark, Gail Turner and Connie, of Aurora, and Tony Turner and Patti, of Powersite; one daughter, Debbie Wilkey and husband, Jim, of Forsyth; two brothers, Bob Turner, of Columbia, and Clinton Turner, of Ontario, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m., at the Forsyth Whelchel Funeral Chapel.

Burial followed at the New Blair Cemetery at Bradleyville with full military honors.

Edith L. Ritter, 84

Feb 23, 2006

Edith Lorene Ritter, the daughter of Monroe Kunze and Myrtle (Haynes) Kunze, was born April 5, 1921, in Douglas County, and departed this life Feb. 14, 2006 at the age of 84.

Edith was a resident of the Ava area for most of her life.

On March 1, 1937 Edith and Edgar Alva Ritter were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, seven children were born.

Edith was a housewife, a loving mother and a farmer’s helper.

She was a member of the Black Oak Flat Church.

She was a 10-year member of the Star Workers Extension and enjoyed making quilts for her family.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ercil, and her husband of 68 years, Edgar Alva.

She is survived by her seven children, Marie King, Ava, Monroe Ritter and wife, Lee, of Liberty, Mo., Linda Prock and husband, Kenneth, Wasola, Stella Upshaw, Neosho, Charles "Gene" Ritter, Ava, Hugh Ritter, Altas, Ark., James "J.C." Ritter and wife Sheree, Bethel, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Kimberland and Laura Ritter, Halfway, Gregory and Marnie Ritter, Liberty, Jeanetta and Allen Bahnmiller, Seymour, Charles "Chuck" and Elaine King, Neosho, Terri Adams, Ava, Dennis Prock, Wasola, and Lorene Upshaw, Neosho; many great-grandchildren, and many step great-grandchildren; one sister, Gail (Davis) Williams, Springfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Larry Vinson and Robert Roberts officiating.

Interment followed in the Dobbs Cemetery.

Reta Thelma Hampton, 89

Reta Thelma Hampton, the daughter of Diamond Levy Brake and Parthena Gladys (Hill) Brake, was born Dec. 5, 1916, in Silver City, Iowa, and departed this life Feb. 17, 2006 in Ava, at the age of 89.

Reta was a resident of the Ava area for most of her life.

On Feb. 1, 1935 Reta and Leonard Hampton were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, two daughters were born.

Reta was a housewife, worked in mobile home sales in California and also worked in a box factory in Davenport, Iowa.

She was a Christian and was baptized at the age of 8 years old.

She enjoyed embroidering quilts, cooking, and sitting on the front porch visiting with family and friends. She loved her family dearly.

Reta was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Reva Epps and Sylvia Smith; two brothers, Russell Brake and Ruze Brake; and her husband, Leonard.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Sybil and Marvin Fleetwood, and Shirley and David "Bob" Fleetwood, all of Ava; six grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis Turner and Linda, Ava, Brenda McClure and David, Morrison, Okla., Teresa and Harvey Quick, Niangua, Shalana and Stephen Frisby, Independence, Angela and Burt Williams, Corona, Calif., and Dallas Fleetwood, Springfield; 10 great-grandchildren, Madelyn Fleetwood, Amy Groll, Shane Turner, Shelly Gallaway, Dusty McClure, Michael Rains, Hannah, Ella, Abigail and Sammie Williams; four great-great-grandchildren, Audrey, Delia, Dylan and Kaitlyn; three sisters, Norma Cassady, Walcott, Iowa, Edith Harrison Parris, Davenport, Iowa, Ruby Richardson, Harworth, Okla.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Tom Johnson and Larry Vinson officiating.

Interment followed in the Goodhope Cemetery.

William “Bill” Lakey, 48

William “Bill” Lakey, son of Noble Lakey and Bonnie May (Byerlee) Lakey, was born March 29, 1957, in Gunnison, Colo., and departed this life Feb. 21, 2006, in St. John's Hospital Springfield, at the age of 48.

Bill was a resident of Springfield for the past 34 years moving there from Ava. He was employed as a dry wall finisher and carpenter.

In 1984, Bill and Elysa Best were united in marriage in Springfield, and to this union, five children were born.

Bill enjoyed restoring and showing his trucks.

William was preceded in death by one grandson, Andrew and a brother, Gary.

He is survived by his wife, Elysa of the home; three daughters and their spouses, Rene and Trace Calabrese, Kansas City, Linda and Mark Cole and Mariah Lakey, all of Springfield; two sons, Tom Lakey and Adam and Jessica Lakey, all of Springfield; four grandchildren, Heaven, Mason, Caden Noble, and Stephanie; his parents, Noble and Bonnie Lakey, Ava; two brothers, Kevin and Stanley Lakey, Ava; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Brad Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in the Denlow Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Monta Irene “Bill” Stone, 90

Feb 16, 2006

Monta Irene Stone, daughter of William Alfred Messick and Alma Irene Mooney Messick, was born on Sept. 7, 1915 in Gassville, Ark., and went home to be with her Lord on Feb. 12, 2006, in Springfield, at the age of 90 years.

Monta lived in the Ava area since 1939, moving from Gassville.

On May 23, 1936 Monta and Lowell Thornton Stone were united in marriage in Gassville, Ark.

She owned and operated a sawmill at Goodhope for over 27 years. She also ran the Roy Store and was postmistress in 1944 and 1945. Monta was a member of the Eastern Gate Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, dominos and pitch. She loved being with all of her friends and family and to tell stories about history.

To know Monta was to love her and to have a friend for life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and six brothers and sisters, Herbert Messick, Major Mooney Messick, Nina Johnson, Beatrice Bradford, Laurel Messick and William Alfred Messick.

Her survivors include one sister, June Marie Dilbeck and husband, Harvey, Cotter, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Frances Messick and Jean Stone; her nieces and nephews, Sue McCormick, Jan Stone, Mary Ann Messick, Alfa Mae Tilton, Alma Bell Franks, Leona Cheeks, Betty Ann Lee, Barbara Sue Davis, Billy Joe Dilbeck, Carlene Tony, Ramona Smith and David Albert Messick; a dear friend, Betty Bricker and her family; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Joe Lafferty officiating.

Interment will follow in the Goodhope Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 1 p.m. till service time.

Dallas Herd, 57

Feb 16, 2006

Dallas Herd, 57, of Wapato, Wash., went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 23, 2006.

He was born Oct. 28, 1948, in Ozark County, Mo., to Sherman and Hazel Herd.

Dallas served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1968 through 1970.

He married Stephanie Elaine Beuers and in 1970 moved to Yakima, Wash.

Some of his hobbies included motorcycle riding, hunting with his dad and spending time as a mechanic in the woods. Some of his more important ones were spending time with his family, children and grandchildren. He retired as transportation director from Lake Washington School District.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; a brother, Dean and his wife, Sue Herd, of Wapato, Wash.; a son, Shannon and his wife, Dawn Herd, of Wenatchee, Wash.; a daughter, Charlotte and her husband, Chris Wood, of Astoria, Ore.; grandchildren Brittny Herd, Tanner Herd, Summer Herd and Shae Wood; a nephew, Heath (Angela) Herd; a niece Risa (Ben) Stollerblack; and many loving family members.

Visitation was held on Friday, Jan. 27, from 4 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 29, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, Yakima, Wash.

Burial was at Reservation Community Memorial Park in Wapato, Wash., on Monday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m.

Memorial services were held at noon on Monday, Jan. 30, at Open Bible Christian Center, Yakima, Wash.

Bobbie Louise Sanders, 78

Feb 16, 2006

Bobbie Louise Sanders, daughter of Hershel S. Taber and Gladys Lucile Gentry Taber, was born on Aug. 22, 1927 in Smallett, and went to her heavenly home on Feb. 10, 2006, in Springfield, in Maranatha Village, at the age of 78.

Bobbie was a life-long resident of the Ava community. She went to grade school at Walnut Grove and later graduated from Ava High School.

On March 2, 1944, she married Raymond Sanders and to this union, two daughters were born.

She was retired from Rawlings Sporting Goods where she worked many years. After her retirement, she worked part-time with Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava.

Bobbie was a member of the First General Baptist Church, Ava where she had led the choir. Bobbie loved her family, her home and was devoted to her church.

Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Maxine Mallars and Diane Taber Reed, and the father of her children, Raymond Sanders.

Her survivors include two daughters, Donna Morgan, Springfield, and Gayle Wilson and husband, Bill, and two grandsons, Tyler and Trevor Wilson, all of Whittier, Calif.; one brother, Leon Taber and wife, Billie Jean, Ava; and a host of extended family and friends.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
