Lyle Patrick Brown, son of Bye and Fanny (Crow) Brown, was born March 21, 1913, in Rippee, Mo., and passed away Dec. 28, 2004, in Salem, Mo., at the age of 91.
Lyle was united in marriage to Glessner Maureen Daily, June 4, 1933.
They were the parents of two children.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Feb. 14, 1997; three brothers, Charles, Vasel and Vivien Brown; and two sisters, Celeste Tucker and Maxine Holmes.
Survivors include two children, Sally Taylor and husband, Stephen, of Springfield, and Dave Brown and wife, Cathy, of Salem; seven grandchildren, Jeff Taylor and wife, Lori, of Morris, Okla., Jacinda Roberts and husband, Jim, of Wichita, Kan., Jason Taylor, Fresno, Calif., David Lyle Brown, Salem, Sean Brown, Columbia, Dawn Pharr and husband, Ryan, Jefferson City, and Melissa Fleener and husband, J.T., of Salem; eight great-grandchildren, Curtis Taylor, Chase Howard, Dalton Howard, Dalton Brown, Zettye Brown, Allie Fleener, Blaine Fleener and Carlie Fleener; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Lyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services for Lyle Brown were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at James & Gahr Chapel, Salem, with Russ Davidson officiating.
Interment was in Lake Spring Cemetery with all arrangements under the direction of James & Gahr Mortuary.
Ruby Fay Lockhart, 83

Ruby Fay Lockhart, daughter of John Washington and Frances Jane Taylor Silvey, was born Feb. 9, 1921, south of the Ragsdale community near Seymour.
She departed this life Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in her home, in Seymour, at the age of 83 years.
On July 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Walter Roy Lockhart, and to this union, three sons and one daughter was born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Billy Gene Lockhart; three brothers, Leonard, Aaron, and Arnold "Buck" Silvey; and a sister, Cleo Self.
Ruby is survived by her husband of 63 years, Walter, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Kathy Lockhart, of Raymondville, Mo., and Howard and Pamela Lockhart, of West Plains; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Edsel Grove, of Cortland, Neb; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Lockhart, of Fordland; nine grandchildren, Donette Stump, and her husband, Kevin, Robert Lockhart, and his wife Rachel, Bruce Lockhart, and his wife Lane, Boyd Lockhart, Jeff Grove, Shelley Ritter, and her husband Todd, Bryan Grove, and his wife Isabel, Heather Grove and Vanessa Lockhart; 14 great-grandchildren, Justin and Katelyn Stump, Destany, Molly and Brittany Grove, Nick, Ashley, Seth, and Paige Ritter, Amber and McKenna, Samantha, Ryliegh, and Cody Grove; two sisters, Betty Farris, of Leadville, Colo., and Leona Comer, of Ava; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised in the Seymour area, and graduated from Seymour High School in the Class of 1940.
After she and Walter were married, they made their home mostly in the Seymour community, except for a few years when they lived in St. Louis and California.
In addition to being a devoted homemaker and loving mother.
Ruby also worked as a teller for the Seymour Bank for many years before retiring.
Ruby made her profession of faith in Christ and was baptized early in her life at the Ragsdale (Harmony) Freewill Baptist Church.
She was a member of the Happy Homemakers Club for several years.
In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, using an old treadle sewing machine, doing embroidery, cooking and playing cards.
She enjoyed being outdoors and liked working in her lawn and garden.
Her family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
Ruby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend.
We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends.
Services will be Friday, Jan. 7, 2 p.m., in the Holman-Howe Chapel, Seymour, with Dr. John Comer officiating.
Burial will be in Seymour Masonic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 7-8 p.m., Thursday, in the funeral home.

Harold James Howerton, 72

Harold James Howerton, 72, Ava, passed away peacefully at 9:10 a.m., Saturday, New Year's Day, 2005, in Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center of Ava.
Harold was born Jan. 20, 1932, at Thornfield, the son of Herbert and Eulah (Marsh) Howerton.
On June 14, 1969, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Horner at Ava.
Harold was a longtime resident of Douglas County and a well-known businessman with several interests and talents.
For many years, he locally owned and operated Harold's Standard Station, Harold's Oil Company and Parts Plus.
Besides expanding his business, he was a sports enthusiast with a competitive spirit.
He received numerous awards, trophies and certificates for his performing race cars and top quality race boats.
He was widely known for his ability to custom-build and refurbish old cars and paying attention to detail and quality was his trademark.
Harold also enjoyed hunting, camping, traveling and water skiing.
He was a man of integrity with a solid sense of direction and true zest for life.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Orville Howerton, and a brother-in-law, Royce Adkisson.
He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy; one daughter, Jamie Adams, and husband Mark of Chariton, Iowa; two sisters, Peggy Adkisson, of Jefferson City, and Kathleen Wallace, and husband Rex, Theodosia; three grandchildren, Janelle, Craig and Jordan; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous caring friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, in Barnes Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. John Haskins and Rev. Marvin Loftin officiating.
Burial followed in the Thornfield Cemetery, Thornfield.

Alfred F. (Al) Baker, 59

Al Baker, the son of A.W. Baker and Annie Lee Kritner Baker, was born Oct. 10, 1944, near Trafford, Ala., and departed this life at his beautiful mountaintop home on June 9, 2004, at the age of 59.
Al grew up, like all kids of the state, a great fan of Alabama football.
He graduated from White City High School and went on to get a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice form Troy State in Montgomery, Ala.
Al served his country in the United States Air Force from 1963 till 1967.
On Jan. 7, 1972, Al and Beverly Jan Moore were united in marriage and to this union, three children were born.
After leaving the military, he entered law enforcement where he spent more than 20 years before retirement.
In 1991, Al and Jan moved to Ava where he farmed and worked with the Ava Police Department for two more years before putting away his badge for good.
Al remained with the Police Auxiliary until his passing.
About five years ago, Al and Jan moved into their dream home on the mountain at Squires.
Along with just sitting on his porch, Al enjoyed stock car racing, going to car shows, restoring old pickup trucks, and showing his 1948 Ford pickup.
Although he left Alabama years ago, the Crimson Tide never left his heart, and in later years, he enjoyed watching his son, Joey, play ball in high school.
Lately, he loved to watch his granddaughter, Ambra, in her high school athletic career.
Al is survived by his wife, Jan; two daughters Angela Gonzalez and her husband, Lupe, of Squires, and Cyndie Kauffman, of Lewistown, Penn.; and one son, Joey Baker, of Springfield. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Ambra Baker and Ashley Kauffman; his father-in-law, Kermit Moore and mother-in-law, Fran Nolte; four sisters, Maye Riddle, Danville, Ala., Faye Coker, Decatur, Ala., Mary King, Blountsville, Ala., and Becky Erdey, St. Louis; four brothers, Jim Brown, Ava, Buck Brown, Cullman, Ala., Kenn Brown, Tampa, Fla., and Bill Brown, Cullman, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
His parents and one sister, Shirley Martin, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Friday in Clinkingbeard Chapel with Pastor Ed Williamson officiating.
Services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.
Anita L. Cory, 87

Anita L. Cory, daughter of Oscar Leverenz and Mary Taylor Leverenz, was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Milwaukee, Wisc., and passed away on June 10, 2004, in James River Care Center in Springfield, at the age of 87.
Anita was a resident of the Smallett community since 1977.
On Oct. 1, 1977, Anita and Byron Cory were united in marriage in Springfield.
She was a registered nurse and worked in Milwaukee as a newborn nursery manager.
Anita was a member of the Walnut Grove General Baptist Church.
She was a lifelong caregiver to all.
Anita was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Byron, in 1994; two infant sisters; one brother, Robert Leverenz; and one nephew, Richard Leverenz.
She is survived by one brother, Oscar Leverenz and wife, Peg, Fayetteville, Ark.; four stepdaughters, CloElla Leverenz, Springfield, Uva McHarg and husband, Jim, Albany, Ohio, Suanne Sutherland and husband, Jerry, Ava, and Charlene Luallen, Memphis, Tenn.; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, at the Walnut Grove Cemetery with Pastor Maxine Lund officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Walnut Grove Church building fund.

Nathaniel Benjamin Beard, 72

Nathaniel Beard passed away Saturday night, June 12, 2004, at his residence in Douglas County, after a long illness.
He was 72 years old.
Nathaniel was born on Oct. 11, 1931, in Ozark County to John Beard and Nola (White) Beard.
On Oct. 11, 1952, Nathaniel and Ada Lee Friend were married in Mountain Home, Ark.
A longtime member of the Souder Church of Christ, Nathaniel enjoyed fishing, gardening, and messing with gadgets.
He also enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors and will be missed by many.
Nathaniel is survived by his wife, Ada, of the home; son, Rickey Lee Beard, and wife, Ronda, of Brixey; daughter, Janice Kay Curtis, and husband, E. J., of Ava; grandchildren, Shelly Kay Chambers, Ava, Shenna Renee Brown, and husband, Travis, Mtn. Grove, William Clay Curtis, and wife, Crystal, Ava, Trisha Jo Ladyman, and husband, Kenneth, of Columbia, Melissa Renee Beard, Mtn. Grove, and Stephannie Gaye Beard, Brixey; great-grandchildren, Kelli Kay Chambers, Farrah Faye Chambers, and Alejandria LeAnn Chambers; brother, Dale Beard, and wife Shirley, Ava; sister, Delores Hathcock, and husband, LeRoy, Springfield; and many other relatives and friends.
Nathaniel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Loran Beard.
Services were held Tuesday, June 15, 11 a.m., at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Gainesville, with E. J. Hampton officiating and burial at Souder Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Souder Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
Darlene Sue Canfield, 61

Darlene Sue "Susie" Canfield was born one of three children to Harry N. Anderson and Jan Boren (Johnson) in Rockford, Ill. on Jan. 26, 1943, and passed away at her home on June 13, 2004, at the age of 61.
Susie worked in the banking and bookkeeping business in the Kansas City area until 1988 when she moved to Ava.
Susie loved making floral displays and helped in a floral shop in Ava after moving here.
Susie also loved playing bingo, boating at the lake and her two dogs.
She was a Christian.
Susie is survived by her beloved Eddie Scott; one daughter, Jennifer Madrid, Ava; her mother, Jan Boren, Springfield; two grandchildren, Justin Canfield, Ava; and Amber Canfield, also of Ava; one sister, Karen Stegwell, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Scott Wilson; and several friends and family. Susie was preceded in death by her father.
A quiet memorial service was held with family on June 13, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.
Susie's body was donated to the Gift of Body program at University of MO-School of Medicine in Columbia, Mo.
Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice of America, American Cancer Society or Humane Society.
Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Harl Want Elliott, 96

Harl Want Elliott, son of Clarence Elliott and Fannie (Haynes) Elliott, was born on March 31, 1908 in Brushyknob, Mo., and passed away on June 13, 2004, in Ava, at the age of 96 years.
Harl was a lifelong resident of the Ava community.
He owned and operated a sawmill company and worked on it all his life.
Harl was a Christian and attended the Evansdale Church for many years and later in life attended the Ava General Baptist Church.
Harl married Zelma Nall, and to this union, one son was born.
Zelma preceded in death.
In 1928, Harl and Daisy Rhoades were united in marriage in Sweden, Mo.
To this union, five children were born.
Daisy preceded in death.
On March 18, 1941, Harl and Lena Rhoades Coonts were united in marriage in Ozark.
Lena preceded in death in 1987.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Fannie; six brothers and sisters, Carl, Jerry, Lillie, Susie, Otis and Eugene; one grandson, Darin Elliott; one granddaughter, Gayla; and three step-children, Willard, Burl and Eva.
His survivors include six children, Alvin Elliott, Gunnison, Colo., Lorene Thurman, Albert Elliott and Harley "Tom" Elliott, all of Ava, Dortha Elliott Seymour, and Pauline Ellison, Theodosia; two step-children, Geneva Heinlein and Dan Coonts, both of Ava; a step-daughter-in-law, Frances Coonts; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Evans and Esther Mears, both of Ozark; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Harl enjoyed fishing, saw milling, squirrel hunting, and being with his family.
Services were held Wednesday, June 16, 2 p.m., at the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn and Rev. Dale Garrison officiating.
Interment was in the Evans Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Evansdale Church.
Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
