Dicey F. Valentine, the daughter of James Monroe Spurlock and Priscillia (Parnell) Spurlock, was born Aug. 23, 1911, in Douglas County, at Wildcat Creek, and departed this life April 24, 2006, at the age of 94 years 8 months and l day.
Dicey was a lifelong resident of the Ava area.
On Aug. 2, 1930, Dicey and George Maxie Valentine were united in marriage in St. Joseph, and to this union, a son was born.
Dicey attended Ava General Baptist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ava Chapter #47 and had received her 50-year pin. She enjoyed and loved being with her family.
Dicey was preceded in death by her parents, her husband “Max” in 1989, three brothers, four sisters and two infant grandsons.
She is survived by her son, Jim Valentine, Ava; three grandchildren, Jayma Potter, Ava, Monty Valentine, Squires, and Linda Church, Sikeston; 14 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Berneice Coon, Kansas City; and a host of relatives and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Don Graham officiating. Ava Eastern Star Chapter #47 will also conduct a memorial ceremony at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation was held Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m.
Memorials can be made to the Ronald McDonald House in care of the funeral home.

Dennis M. Goforth, 57

Dennis Mac Goforth, 57, Brookline, was born Oct. 24, 1948.
The son of Jack and Vernita Goforth, he went home to be with his Heavenly Father on April 11, 2006, joining friends and family gone on before.
Growing up in Ava, he moved to Springfield where he attended Central High School.
He was united in marriage to Dianna R. McLaughlin on Dec. 17, 1966. To this union, were born three children: Teresa, Rebecca and Matt.
Dennis spent his life building homes in the Nixa/Springfield area. He was devoted to the Lord Jesus and graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa, Okla. in 2000. He was a loving husband and wonderful father.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Dianna;
daughters, Teresa L. and husband, Joe Mayer, and Rebecca M. and husband, Jay Moore; a son, Matt and fiancé, Jaime Lang;
grandsons, Joseph D. Mayer and William E. Mayer;
a granddaughter, Rianna E. Mayer; his mother, Vernita Clem; a brother, Nyal Goforth and wife, Gracie; sisters, Pauline Thompson and husband, Chuck, and Kathy Arbuckle and husband, Ronnie; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home chapel, Springfield.
Burial followed in Delaware Cemetery, in Christian County.
Joe Ann Spurlin, 65

Joe Ann Spurlin, the daughter of Marion Lee Parsons and Dessie (Frye) Parsons, was born Sept 16, 1940, in Branson, and departed this life on May l0, 2006, at the age of 65 years 7 months and 24 days.
Joe Ann was a resident of Ava for the past 35 years, moving from Aurora, Ill.
On Feb. 6, 1960, Joe Ann and James "Jim" H. Spurlin were united in marriage in Aurora, Ill. Joe Ann and Jim were blessed with three children.
Joe Ann was employed as an L.P.N. for 18 years. She enjoyed going to church, crocheting, and spoiling her grandkids.
She was a member of the Ava General Baptist Church.
Joe Ann was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home, Ava; one daughter, Jill Olson and husband, George, Springfield; two sons, Jeff Spurlin and wife, Kris, Ava, and Joe Spurlin and wife, Rhonda, Springfield; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; one sister, Barbara Murray, Conway, Ark.; one brother, James Taber, Ava; a special friend, Joyce Clinkingbeard; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating.
Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 7 p.m.. in the funeral home.
The family requests memorials be made to Community Hospice.
Services are being conducted by Clinkenbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Charlotte Jean Yeoman, 61

Charlotte Jean Yeoman, 61, of Ozark, and a longtime resident of Springfield, passed away in the early hours of Monday, May 8, 2006.
Charlotte was born Aug. 13, 1944, in Ava, the daughter of Rev. Lawrence and Edythe (Turner) Applegate.
On May 16, 1980, she was united in marriage to John Yeoman in Springfield.
For the past year, Charlotte courageously fought Multiple Myeloma, drawing strength from her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and leaning on her faith throughout her journey. She was the epitome of strength, wisdom, and compassion. She loved little children and was a loyal and loving friend, always demonstrating easy acceptance, tolerance, and unconditional love.
She was a member of Seminole Baptist Temple in Springfield, where she and husband John were very active in the children's ministry.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her father, and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
She is lovingly survived by her husband of 25 years, John Yeoman; her mother, Edythe Applegate of Ozark; two daughters, Sharla Buthod and husband, Jeff, of Jefferson City, and Sonya McDaniel and husband, Justin, of Asher, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Tofuri and husband, Allen, of Springfield; a brother Rev. Jerry Applegate and wife, Jo, of Raytown; three grandchildren, Blake and Tara Buthod and Christian Turk; other relatives and many loving friends.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., today (Thursday) in Seminole Baptist Temple, 4221 South National, Springfield, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with the Revs. Jerry Applegate and Mel Brown officiating.
Burial will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
Following Charlotte's request, the casket will remain closed at all times.

Paul D. Clouse, 78

Paul D. Clouse, son of F. A. and Adah Burke Clouse, was born Sept. 5, 1927, near Fordland, Mo.
He departed this life Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in Cox Medical Center South, in Springfield, at the age of 78 years.
On Nov. 8, 1956, he was united in marriage to Naomi Hodges, and to this union, one daughter and one son were born.
His parents; a grandson, Kendall Clouse; and two brothers preceded him in death.
Paul is survived by his wife of 49 years, Naomi, of the home; a daughter, Paula Clouse, of Springfield; a son, Ken Clouse, and his wife, Debbie, of Mansfield; a grandson, Travis Clouse, of Mansfield; two brothers, James Clouse and David Clouse, both of Mansfield; two sisters, Lois Clouse, of Springfield, and Betty Eagleston, of Mansfield; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born near Fordland and was raised in the Mansfield community.
He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean War.
After he and Naomi were married, they made their home in the Mansfield area and lovingly raised their family. Besides operating his farm, Paul worked as a foreman at the Tobin-Hamilton Shoe Factory for a number of years.
Paul was converted at an early age and was a Christian all of his life. He attended the Seymour Nazarene Church.
In his spare time, he enjoyed farming and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and always told his family how much he loved each of them.
Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the memories he made for his family and friends.
Services are to be held Friday, May 12, 10 a.m. at the Holman-Howe Chapel, with Rev. Mark Terrill officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mansfield Cemetery.

Evengelina Gomes, 83, Ava, passed away Monday, May 8, 2006, at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center in Ava.
She was born Oct. 11, 1922, at Acores, Portugal, to Manuel and Maria (Rocha) Costa.
On Nov. 19, 1942, she married Benjamin C. Gomes in Portugal.
Evengelina was a devoted wife and mother, and she enjoyed cooking for her family as well as sewing. She was very dedicated to her church and her church family.
Evengelina was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, two daughters and one son.
She is survived by one son, Joe Gomes and his wife, Louise, of Ava; one daughter, Maria C. Alves and her husband, Dimas, of Seymour; 16 grandchildren including a grandson, Jerry Gomes, who is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Ava, with Father Mike Powell, Celebrant, officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Visitation will be between the hours of 6 and 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava.
Inez Z. Herd, 79

Inez Z. Herd passed away April 29, 2006 at her home after a short illness, at the age of 79.
She was one of seven children of Frank Treat and Bessie Snyder Treat.
She married Troy Herd on Jan. 10, 1944, in Mtn. Home, Ark.
She had four children — three boys and one girl.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry Herd, and her husband.
Surviving are her sons, J.C. Herd and his wife, Pat, and Tim Herd Craig and his wife, Vivian; one daughter, Mary Jane Bruffett and her husband, Larry; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Herd; five sisters and one brother, Franklin Treat, Martha West, Laura Lawson, Edna Lawson, Lula Hechler and Helen Shelton.
She also had eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and Gunner whom she raised from a baby and loved as her own; many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was loved by all and worked for her church.
The funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Walnut Lawn Funeral Home Chapel in Springfield.
Burial will be in Brashers Cemetery.
Rita Pauline Jenkins, 87

Rita Pauline Jenkins, daughter of Arthur and Lois Jenkins Richards, was born July 20, 1918 near Rome, Mo., and departed this life Saturday, May 13, 2006, in Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Overland Park, Kan., at the age of 87 years, nine months, and 23 days.
She was united in marriage to Lester Vernon Jenkins, Dec. 25, 1938, and to this union, one daughter was born.
Lester preceded her in death Dec. 14, 2002.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Marshall and Bill Richards.
She was a longtime resident of the Ava area, moving to Seymour in l996, and then to Shawnee, Kan., to be near her daughter three years ago.
She was a member of the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church in Seymour and a member of the Roy Quilting Club near Ava.
She was retired from Fasco Industries in Ozark.
She is survived by her daughter and husband, Beverly Sue and Jim Wetherton, Lenexa, Kan.; a granddaughter and husband, De Recia and Eric Wade, Olathe, Kan.; three great-grandsons, Jimmie Burt, Jordan, and Josh "Chopper" Wade, Olathe, Kan.; a foster daughter, Mary Lou Hendricks, Fairview, Okla.; a foster son, Finnis "Skip" Berry, Ava; four foster grandsons, Jackie, Allen, Curtis, and Gary Hendricks, Fairview, Okla.; a sister, Helen Dobbins, Ava; two brothers and their wives, Jack and Irene Richards and Dick and Pauline Richards, all of Ava; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and any friends.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, in Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Seymour with graveside services at 2:45 p.m. in Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Ava, with Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.
Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Douglas County Museum and Historical Society or the American Heart Association at the funeral home.
Ada Mae Huff, 90

Ada Mae Huff died Friday, May 12, 2006 at the age of 90 Years 10 months and 4 days.
She was born in 1915 in a little house near where Fannon Cemetery is today.
In 1935, Ada graduated from Ava High School and married Maynard Huff in Mtn. Home, Ark. To this union, three children were born: Lora Smith, Lees Summit, Geraldine Gray, Ava, and Carl Huff and wife June, Lees Summit.
She and Maynard owned and operated a dairy farm for many years, and after retirement, moved back to the farm where she grew up. Since 1998, she has lived with grandchildren Danny, Melanie, Heath and Samantha Gray a short distance from where she was born and lived most of her life. She will also be greatly missed by grandchildren Brad Smith and Kitty of West Plains, Curtis Smith and Amy of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Dana and Brian Wiencek, Emily, Madison and Natalie of Lees Summit, and many other special nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ada Mae was preceded in death by her parents, PDA and Julina Ritter Davis, brothers Arvel and Fred Davis, and sister Mabel Johnson; and her husband, Maynard and grandson, Darren Huff.
Ada Mae, or "Granny" as she was affectionately called by many, was known for her homemade rolls and other baked goods, and her crocheted afghans, hangers and washcloths, all of which she loved to give to all her friends and family. Her sense of humor, loving nature and generous spirit will long be missed.
Ada Mae was a member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church and of the Rebekah Lodge of Ava.
Services were held on Tuesday May 16, at 3 p.m. in the Ava United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Dowler and Rev. Maxine Lund officiating.
Burial followed in the Ava Cemetery.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the American Cancer Society, Walnut Grove Baptist Church or Ava United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava.
Nora Bell Youngblood, 91

Nora Bell Youngblood, daughter of Flossie Bristol, was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Ava.
She departed this life Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in Hartville Care Center, Hartville, at the age of 91 years, two months and 21 days.
On Feb. 20, 1933, she was united in marriage to Laurence Youngblood, in Wright County.
She was preceded in death by her mother; her husband, Laurence, on Sept. 29, 1991; a great-grandson, Kevin Pickle; three brothers, Homer, Ralph and Harold Lansdown; two sons-in-law, Marvin Winingar and Charles McDaniel; and a brother-in-law, Elbert (Joe) Borders.
Nora is survived by three sons, Elmer Youngblood and his wife, Velta, of Tucson, Ariz., Albert Youngblood and his wife, Mary, of McHenry, Md., and Larry Youngblood and his wife, Ruth, of Waynesboro, Pa.; four daughters, Reba Winingar, Dumfries, Va., Pauline Taylor and her husband, Everett, Bethune, S.C., Esther Pickle and her husband, Carrol (Doc), and Wilma McDaniel, all of Mansfield; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lela Borders, of Mansfield; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Lansdown, Rogersville, and Augusta Lansdown, Mansfield; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Nora had made her profession of faith in Christ and was baptized at an early age, and was the last surviving charter member of the Glad Hill Church.
In her earlier years she had worked as a licensed practical nurse at the Pratt County Hospital, in Pratt, Kan.
Nora was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Mansfield Cemetery with Rick Johnson officiating.
Services and burial were under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Mansfield.
