James Ross Graham entered his heavenly home on Friday, July 13, 2006, in Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.
Ross started his earthly walk near Champion. He was welcomed into the home of his parents, James Robert and Sadie Lowry Graham. His boyhood days were spent on the hills and valleys of eastern Douglas County learning to appreciate God’s creations. All his life, he loved to walk the hills and watch the wildlife accompanied by his trusty dog.
On March 22, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mary J. Prim, in Black, Ala.
Ross entered the U.S. Army in June 1943 and served his country in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He later served during the Korean War, as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Larry; two sisters, Bertha Carrol and Beulah Menne; and two brothers, Voytil Wheat and John Graham.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; sons, James “Earl” Graham, of Mtn. Grove, Robert “Bob” Graham, Norwood, and Lee “Butch” Graham, Drury; two brothers, Stanley Graham, Seattle, Wash., and Doyle Graham, Arlington, Kan.; and a host of other friends and family.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 17, in the Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Robert Bratt officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Home Cemetery at Drury.
Walter Windfield Eyman, 91

Walter Windfield Eyman, 91, of Springfield, passed away July 30, 2006, at 8:35 a.m. in Quail Creek Nursing Home, Springfield.
He was born Sept. 21, 1914, in Waynaka, Okla., the son of William and Francis Eyman.
On March 2, 1946, he and Ellen (Stephens) Eyman were married in Liberal, Kan.
He retired from working in various vocations at the age of 65. He was ordained as a minister on May 29, 1954 at Y Freewill Baptist Church in Douglas County. He was a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church. He loved to sing gospel songs and do recitations by memory. His favorite one was, “What Heaven Means to Me.” He pastored Plad, Hercules and Bethel Churches.
Walter is preceded in death by one infant daughter Reta Lynn Eyman, a twin of Rick Eyman, his first wife, Verna, two sisters, Izetta Ross and Nadine Martin, and one brother, Lewis Eyman.
Survivors include Ellen, his wife of 60 years; five sons, Marvin and wife, Paula, of Springfield, Steve of Springfield, Russell and wife, Kay, of Fair Grove, Ronnie of Springfield, Rick and wife, Marnida, of Conway; one sister, Roglanda and Moon Mullins of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two sons by his first, deceased wife, Verna, Terry and wife, Patti Eyman, of Canon City, Colo., and Rex and wife, Patricia, of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with burial in Prairie Hollow Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to Friendship Freewill Baptist Church.
Richard Worth Zartman, 76

Richard Worth Zartman, the son of Ferdie J. Zartman and Dessie Lovina (Rickel) Zartman, was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Macy, Ind., and departed this life July 28, 2006 at the age of 76.
Richard was a resident of Ava for 10 years.
He served his country during the Korean War and was employed as maintenance supervisor for a public school before he retired.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jay and Carl Zartman.
He is survived by one sister, Mildred Krutzer, of the state of Illinois: a niece, Linda Zartman, Quinton, Okla.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cremation services are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Jessie L. Coy, 84

Jessie L. Coy, daughter of Carl and Lottie (Rippee) Hatfield, was born on Jan. 10, 1922, in Douglas County, and departed this life on July 31, 2006, in Ava, at the age of 84.
Jessie was a lifelong resident of the Sweden community. She was a housewife and homemaker.
On March 18, 1942, Jessie and Dewey Otto Coy were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, one daughter was born.
Jessie became a Christian at the age of 17 years. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Jessie enjoyed cooking, canning and taking care of the household. She loved being with her family.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Otto, in 1982. They were married 40 years.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Darrell Lakey, Ava; two grandchildren, Janell Lakey, Brent and wife, Jennifer Lakey, and one great-grandson, Matthew Lakey, all of Ava; as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Oscar Cunningham officiating. Interment was in the Dobbs Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday, from 7 to 8 pm in the funeral home. The family requests memorials to the Dobbs Cemetery, in care of the funeral home or Town & Country Bank, Ava.
Russell Cleon Hess, 40

Russell Cleon Hess, son of Cleon Ray Hess and Mildred Marie (Payte) Hess was born on August 17, 1965 in Malad, Idaho and departed this life on July 26, 2006 in Ava at the age of 40.
Russell was resident of Ava community for close to a year moving from Las Vegas, Nev. He was a technician in air conditioning and heating. He was very gifted in mechanical work. He had a joy in his work and loved that challenge. He was an Army veteran, having served from 1983 to 1987.
On July 3, 1999 Russell and Doreen LaPardi were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nev.
He attended the Ava Assembly of God Church and had formerly also attended the Assembly of God Church in Las Vegas.
Russell enjoyed music and working on his computer. He loved and adored being with his children and all his family.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Cleon Hess.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen of the home in Ava; two sons, Benjamin Russell Hess, Ava, and Joseph Newlin, Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Francine “Frankie” Hanks, Ava, and Melinda LaPardi, Las Vegas, Nev.; one grandson, Riley Newlin, Las Vegas, Nev.; his parents, Cleon Ray and Mildred Marie Hess, Tremonten, Utah; two sisters, Morgan Sullivan and Vioma Anderson, both of Utah; two brothers, Fred Hess, Utah, and Nathan Hess, Las Vegas; his grandmother, “Viola” Payte, Mount Ida, Ark.; and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, July 29, at 2 p.m., at the Clinkingbeard Chapel with the Pastors Gary Stigall and Bill Hudson officiating.
Cremation followed the services. The family requests memorials as a love offering to the family. Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Rose Janet Gregg, 74

Rose Janet Gregg passed from this life at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield on Aug. 1, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Lecompton, Kan., on March 27, 1932, the daughter of Harry D. and Cora E. Anderson.
Janet was united in marriage to John (Jack) Gregg on June 25, 1949, in Topeka, Kan., and to this union, two children were given, Brian Samuel and Angela Rose.
Janet spent most of her life in the Topeka, Kan., area where she was an active homemaker, mother and friend. She was also actively involved in the auto racing community in Topeka and other Sports Car Club of America and National Hot Rod Club events. She was known as “that little white haired lady” and was well known and loved by all whose lives she touched. She and Jack moved to the Ava area in 2000 to begin new friendships.
Her parents and a son, Brian Samuel, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Jack, of Ava; her daughter, Angela Carver, of Topeka, Kan.; a sister, Joan Baldwin and husband, Wendell, of Topeka, Kan.; one grandchild, Brian A. Carver; and one great-granddaughter, Michelle. She also leaves a host of friends and relatives.
Friends and family are invited to gather for a memorial service to be held Monday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Barnes Family Funeral Home in Ava. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Neighbor Helping Neighbor.
A memorial service and interment are planned for Half-Day Cemetery, Topeka, Kan., at a later date.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava.
Cyrus "Puss" Eugene Heckendorn, 78

Cyrus "Puss" Eugene Heckendorn, son of Claude George and Artie Mae (Matney) Heckendorn, was born Aug. 5, 1927, near Seymour, and departed this life Friday, July 21, 2006, in Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, at the age of 78.
On Oct. 24, 1952 he was united in marriage to Sybil Lee Everett, and to this union, a son and a daughter were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Richard Heckendorn, John Heckendorn, and Jack Heckendorn.
“Puss” is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Sybil, of the home; a son, Richard Keith Heckendorn, and his wife, Jill, of Ava; a daughter, Vicky Denney, and her husband, Bruce, of Ava; a granddaughter, Kalie McHaffie, and her husband, Cody, of Rogersville; three grandsons, Colby Heckendorn, of Chicago, Ill., Ryan Denney, of Springfield, and Shawn Denney, of Ava; one great-granddaughter, Allison Denney, of Springfield; one brother, Gordon Heckendorn, and his wife, Sue, of Seymour; two sisters, Janie Carpenter, of Seymour, and Clarice Henderson, of Arkansas City, Kan.; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was born and raised in Seymour, and at the age of 16, he joined the United States Army and served his country faithfully during World War II and the Korean War.
Following his time in the service, he and his family moved to the Mansfield area and later returned to Seymour where he owned and operated a farm until his retirement in 1992. He and Sybil moved to Ava in l993 to make their home.
“Puss” had made his profession of faith in Christ and attended the Star Freewill Baptist Church near Seymour in his younger years.
He centered his life around his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends over a cup of coffee at Speedy’s in Seymour and McDonald’s in Ava. He had a passion for playing golf with his brother and friends, and he also liked to play cards and dominoes. He spent much of his spare time mowing and caring for his lawn.
“Puss” was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 24, in the Seymour First Baptist Church, Seymour Missouri, with the Revs. Bill Salsbery and Gordon Heckendorn, and Colby Heckendorn officiating. Burial with full military honors by Webster County Veterans Memorial Association was in Seymour Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 366, Seymour, Missouri.
Ivan Isaac Miller, 81

Ivan Isaac Miller, son of Isaac Dolphin and Minnie Mae Morrison Miller, was born July 11, 1925, near Seymour.
He departed this life Friday, July 21, 2006, in Cox Medical Center South, in Springfield, at the age of 81.
On Feb. 11, 1947 he was united in marriage to Velma Louise Chase and to this union, three daughters and one son were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma, on November 27, 1999; and two daughters, Sandra and Yvone.
Ivan is survived by a daughter, Joy Fender, and her husband, Rocky, of Galena; a son, David Miller, and his wife, Connie, of Grovespring; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born and raised in the Smackout community, near Seymour, where he attended school. He served his country faithfully in the United States Coast Guard. After he and Velma were married, they made their home in the Hartville community except for two years when they lived in the state of Washington.
Ivan had made his profession of faith in Christ and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
He centered his life around his family and the farm and greatly enjoyed being outdoors, coon hunting, fishing, and brush hogging. He also loved going out to restaurants with his family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Holman-Howe Chapel, Hartville, with the Rev. Jack Dedmon officiating. Burial was in New Grove Cemetery.
Grace L. Brixey, 91

Grace L. Brixey, daughter of the late Frank and Emma (Hopper) Strunk, was born on Nov. 28, 1914, in Norwood, and departed this life on July 18, 2006, in the Autumn Oaks Caring Center in Mtn. Grove, following a three-week illness. She was 91.
Grace grew up in Douglas County and attended the Glendale school.
She was united in marriage to Eli Finch on Nov. 16, 1934.
He passed away on Feb. 19, 1956.
In 1958 she married Herbert “Herb” Alfred Brixey.
They made their home in Douglas County and the Norwood community all their lives.
Herb passed away on Feb. 10, 1987.
Grace enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and taking care of her chickens and guineas. She enjoyed farm life and watching all kinds of birds. She was saved at the Pryor Church following her marriage to Herb. At the time of her passing she was a member of Liberty Faith Church in Norwood and enjoyed attending as long as her health permitted.
Besides her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Hubert Strunk, Raymond Strunk, Lester Strunk, Byron Strunk, Billy Strunk, and Ova “Dink” Strunk; and by three sisters, Lettie Campbell, Eunice Sisco and Helen Strunk.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives, her church family, and a host of other friends and neighbors in the community.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m., in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Ron Kelly, Reg Kelly and Oscar Cunningham officiating. Burial was in Denlow Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Mtn. Grove.
Leonard Kropp, 78

Leonard Kropp, age 78, died February 21, 2006, at his winter home in Mission, Texas.
Leonard grew up in Ava, Missouri, and on September 1, 1946, married Donna Silvey, also of Ava.
He was a retired Wal-Mart truck driver.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Donna, of Lampe, MO, three daughters and a son-in-law, Marilyn Richardson of Jefferson City, Carolyn Kropp of Lampe, and Marsha Williams, and husband, Eugene, of Thompson’s Station, Tenn., and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 30, at 10:00 at the Ava Cemetery in Ava.
