Gertie Inez (Ferrell) Stout of Lawrence, Kan., and formerly of Gentryville, passed away July 18, 2006.
Except for a year in Tarkio, and the last 32 months in Lawrence, Kan., she lived her entire life within a few miles of where she was born.
She, along with her husband, Hugh, to whom she would have been married for 77 years in November, operated, at different times, several rural grocery stores and a family farm. She also worked as a cook, of which there were none better, at the Rockbridge trout retreat until she retired.
She was a gifted quilter and seamstress. She enjoyed playing the piano and extending her devout Christian faith by being a servant of her family, friends, neighbors and the Gentryville Community Church.
She married her husband, Hugh L. Stout, on Nov. 29, 1929. He survives of the home.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Dallas, a son, Doyal and an infant granddaughter, Diana; three brothers, J.P. Ferrell, Floyd Ferrell and Urgil Ferrell; and two sisters, Maude (Ferrell) Massey and Lucille (Ferrell) Ridenour.
Other survivors include a daughter, Virginia and her husband Allan 'Skeet" Smith, of Lawrence, Kan.; a sister, Daisy and her husband, Art, also of Lawrence, Kan.; a brother, Alf, of Livermore, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Blanche Community Church at the former site of Blanche, Missouri, on Saturday, July 22, at 10 a.m.
Burial will be immediately following services to celebrate and honor her life.
The family will receive visitors at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Gertie was born on Aug. 28, 1910, the daughter of James and Sara (Riley) Ferrell at Blanche, Missouri.
The family suggests memorial gifts in favor of the Douglas County Kansas Visiting Nurses Association, the Blanche Cemetery or the Gentryville Community Church, c/o Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.
Services are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Wanda Jenkins, 55

Wanda “Snooks” Jenkins, 55, entered her heavenly home Friday, July 14, 2006, at the Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, surrounded by her family and friends.
She started her earthly walk Sept. 26, 1950, in Ava, with parents Russell and Oma Katherine Lathrop.
Snooks was united in marriage to Al Jenkins on Sept. 19, 1970.
Snooks enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling with her husband, Al, and spending time with her family and friends. She loved to make music for her Lord. Most of all, Snooks loved to read her Bible, praise her Lord and do Christian work for the church and community.
Snooks was preceded in death by her parents, and a granddaughter, Jayla.
Survivors include her husband, Al; two sons, Telly Jenkins and wife, Stephanie, of Republic, and Cory Jenkins and wife, Jessica, of Ava; one brother, James “Butch” Lathrop, of Springfield; one sister, Rose Zella Myers and husband, Leroy, of Ava; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Goodhope General Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Parker, Bob Husky and Zach Williams officiating, under the direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava. Burial followed in the Goodhope Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gideons International, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or the Goodhope Cemetery.
Johnny Lowell Burkdoll Sr., 65

Johnny Lowell Burkdoll Sr. was born, the son of Harold John Burkdoll and Ollie Mae Degase Burkdoll, on March 3, 1941, at Toledo, Mo., and departed this life on Aug. 12, 2006, at the age of 65 at his home at Squires.
Johnny's early years were spent gaining his education at Tranquility School, Frye School, and finally at Ava Public Schools. He took pride in being one of the finest practical jokers around.
On June 1, 1960, Johnny married Carrie Fay Mitchusson in Rochelle, Ill., and to this union, three children were born.
Johnny was a dairy farmer and enjoyed his horses. He also enjoyed coon hunting, and working on his practical jokes. Johnny belonged to Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association, Booger County Coonhunters, American Quarter Horse Association, and Ava Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife Carrie; two sons Johnny Jr. and wife Phyllis, of Squires, and Jason Burkdoll, of Ava; and a daughter, Joan Burkdoll, of Squires; seven grandchildren, Micca, Kati, Austin, Amanda, Haylee, Alex, and Shane; one brother, Deward Turner and wife, Marcy, of Squires; two sisters, DeEtta and Bob Atherton, of Ava, and Deloris Swanson, of the state of Washington.
Johnny was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon Burkdoll, one sister, Doris Burkdoll, and his parents.
Funeral services for Johnny Lowell Burkdoll Sr. were held Wednesday Aug. 16 at 10 a.m., in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, with Rev. Tony Turner and Rev. John Haskins officiating.
Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Charles B. “Chuck” Bruce III, 67

Charles Ballard Bruce III, son of Charles Ballard Bruce Jr. and Dessie Mae (Kellem) Bruce, was born on Sept. 1, 1938, in Anderson, S.C., and departed this life on Aug. 12, 2006 in Springfield, at the age of 67.
Charles was affectionately called “Chuck” by his friends and family. Chuck was a resident of the Ava community since 1995. He was a retired State Peace Officer with the Dept. of Corrections in California.
On Sept. 23, 1976, Chuck and Marian Sue (Hull) Smith were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nev.
Chuck was a veteran and served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1961. Chuck also had served with the Highway Patrol in San Francisco, Calif., for eight years. He had AA and BA degrees in criminal law, and was also a paralegal. He held a P.O.S.T. commission for California Correctional Peace Officers and eighth degree black belt in Subato, in Indo China. He was a correctional sergeant at California Institute for Men for 10 years and past president of California Correctional Peace Officers Association of California Institute for men, Chino, Calif. He has been a member of that union for 20 yrs. Chuck was a member of the Ava Full Gospel Church and also had supported the New Life Family Worship in Mansfield.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Charles B. Bruce, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of the home in Ava; his mother, Dessie Mae Bruce, Malvern, Pa.; four children and their spouses, Kim J. Bruce, Springfield, Tammy V. and Ron May, Fair Play, Michael D.A. and Michelle Bruce, Mtn. Grove, and Kenneth E. and Shallan Bruce, Ava; eight grandchildren, Brittany, Stephanie, Michael Jr., Daniel, Aubrey, Little Brittany, Tailer and Cody; three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Taylor and Dillon; three sisters, Barbara and husband, JC. Snyder, Macon, Ga., Patsy Kay, Warner Robins, Ga., and Gloria Gallian and husband, George, of Phoenixville, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, at the Clinkingbeard Chapel with Pastors Mark Schuster and Doyne “Butch” McCleary officiating.
Interment was in the Denney Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 112 and VFW 5993. The family requests memorials to the American Lung Assoc., American Heart Assoc. or American Diabetes Assoc. Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Monzella “Monty” Virtue, 77

Monzella I. “Monty” Virtue, daughter of the late Samuel and Oshia (Ferguson) Hitchcock, was born on March 19, 1929, in Douglas County, Mo., and departed this life suddenly on Aug. 5, 2006, in the Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains at the age of 77.
Monty grew up in Douglas County and graduated from Ava High School in 1947. Following graduation, she attended Missouri Arkansas Baptist College in West Plains and taught at Little Zion School for one year.
She was united in marriage to Albert C. Terkosky on Aug. 15, 1950, in Mtn. Home, Ark.
They moved to Livonia, Mich., where she worked for Burls. When Al’s health started failing, they moved back to the Mtn. Grove area.
Mr. Terkosky passed away on July 2, 1968.
Monty married Dwain Virtue on Oct. 2, 1971, and lived in the Mtn. Grove area for many years.
At the time of her passing, Monty was attending the Trinity Freewill Baptist Church in Cabool, where she enjoyed attending services.
She also enjoyed being outdoors, especially when tending to her flower gardens. She was a loving and giving wife, sister, and friend who will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Besides her parents, and her first husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hitchcock; her mother-in-law, Thelma Virtue; and by one brother-in-law, Clifford Kelley.
She is survived by her husband, Dwain Virtue, of their home; her sister-in-law, Lois Kelley; her brother-in-law and his wife, David and Kim Virtue; a niece, Katie Virtue; a nephew, Curtis Virtue; her godchildren, Jolanda Blackwell and Jake Childs; special friends, Garry, Pam and Ellie Childs; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Monty Virtue were held Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel with the Rev. Duane Crewse officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Home Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
Van Williams Sr., 88

Van Williams Sr., son of Paul Williams and Maude Roy Williams, was born on Feb. 1, 1918.
He departed this life Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, in Delmar Gardens on the Green in Chesterfield, Mo., at the age of 88.
On Nov. 19, 1937, he was united in marriage to Ada Juanita Reed, and to this union, three sons and three daughters were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Herman, Audrey, Howard and Amos; two sisters, Rose and Myrtle; and a step-grandson, Travis Query.
Van is survived by his wife, Juanita, of Ozark; three sons, Philip Williams and his wife, Leota, of Warsaw, Stephan Williams and his wife, Sherry, of Springfield, and Van Williams Jr. and his wife, Debra, of West Plains; three daughters, Carol Merritt and her husband, Homer, of Sparta, Donna Green and her husband, Bill, of Sikeston, and Trudy Williams, of Ballwin; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Van was born in Mansfield and spent most of his childhood there. While working in Oklahoma, he met Juanita on Aug. 5, 1937. Van and Juanita then returned to Mansfield where they were united in marriage and, shortly thereafter, they started their family with their first two children, Philip and Carol, being born there. They then moved to Kansas where Donna, Stephan and Van Jr. were born. They later moved to Bradleyville where their youngest child, Trudy was born. Van was a brick mason by trade and a bi-vocational minister.
The family also lived in the Ava and Ozark communities, where Van would often preach in various churches.
"Old Willie" as he was referred to by his family and friends, enjoyed collecting antique dishes, and in his spare time enjoyed photography, writing and hunting with his sons and grandsons.
Van was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and was a caring neighbor and friend.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Mansfield with the Rev. Van Williams Jr. officiating. Interment was in Mansfield Cemetery.
Samuel Lawrence Hannaford, 88

Samuel Lawrence Hannaford, age 88, of Mansfield, died July 31, 2006, in Springfield, after a short illness.
He was born June 24, 1918 in Gainesville, the son of the late Edwin and Ellen Hannaford.
Lawrence was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Joe Hannaford, March 31, 2006.
Survivors are a daughter, Deana Martin, Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Patty Hannaford, Strafford; a son, David Hannaford, Springfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and David Fairchild, Seymour; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He requested that there be no services or visitation.
Interment was in the Dyer Cemetery in Douglas County, under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Frances Kay Stokes, 64

Frances Kay Stokes, 64, of Rogersville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, from injuries of an automobile accident.
Frances was born Oct. 26, 1941, in Houston, Mo., to Lyle and Effie Gross Deck.
She was a graduate of Houston High School and had attended SMSU (now Missouri State University) in Springfield.
She was an operator for St. John’s Answering Service in Springfield.
Frances is survived by her son, Ronald Stokes and wife, Ronda, of Rogersville; one brother, Jimmy Deck and wife, Patty, of Arizona; five sisters, Mary Willis, Cedar Creek, Betty Bennett and husband, Dale, of Houston, Linda Durham and husband, Gary, of St. Louis, Sue Silveus and husband, David, of Houston, and Diann Clark and husband, Jerry, of Rogersville; two grandchildren, Morgan and Ryan Stokes, of Rogersville; 13 nieces and 12 nephews.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Bobby, Russell and Johnnie Deck.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home in Rogersville with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Wolford Cemetery, Houston.
Evelyn Louise Croney, 65

Evelyn L. Croney, the daughter of Elmer Smith and Pearl (Heath) Cook, was born Sept. 10, 1940, in Bertha, Mo., and departed this life Aug. 3, 2006, at the age of 65.
Evelyn was a life-long resident of the Ava area.
On June 20, 1958 Evelyn and William W. Croney were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union, three children were born.
Evelyn was a Christian and of the Baptist Faith.
Evelyn enjoyed fishing, quilting and loved being with her family. She delighted in caring for her great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her father, and her husband, William, in 1996.
She is survived by her mother, Pearl Cook, Ava; three children, Tammy Sanders, West Plains, Rick Croney, Ava, and Angela Lane, Clarksville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Robbie Lane, Clayton Presson, Ronnie Croney, Ricky Croney, Tracy Fitzgerald and William Croney; six step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held Monday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Loftin officiating. Interment was in the New Hope Cemetery. The family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Miya Lea Frye, 17

Miya Lea Frye, daughter of James Ellis “Rusty” Frye II and Danita Lynn Porter Frye, was born on Feb. 24, 1989, in Springfield, and departed this life on Aug. 6, 2006, in Douglas County, at the age of 17.
Miya was a lifelong resident of the Ava community. She was enrolled at Drury College to begin this fall in Ava. Miya attended the Clark Church and had also attended the Mt. Zion Bible School during her 1st and 2nd grades. She attended and enjoyed Camp JOY at Vera Cruz for several years. Miya was converted in 1996 at Camp JOY.
Some of her hobbies included horseback riding, camping, swimming at the creek, painting, cooking and sewing. Miya enjoyed meeting new people and spending time with her friends. Miya was ambitious and a young lady who overcame many struggles at a young age. She was always looking to the future. Being very positive she always found love in all and was a friend to many. She never met a stranger. Miya was an exceptional mother. She had recently found a love for studying the Bible. Miya loved and adored her family.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Pat and Louise Porter, one sister, Autumn Louise, and an uncle, Doug Porter.
She is survived by her daughter, Autum Kaydence Blaze Miller, Squires; her parents, James Ellis “Rusty” Frye, Squires, and Danita Lynn Frye, Ava; grandparents, Jimmie and Jean Frye, Squires; one sister, Kiya Belle Lynn Head, Gainesville; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a special friend, Sayde Garrett.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Revs. Mark Degase and Stan Collins officiating. Interment will be in the Fannon Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
The family requests memorials to the Education Fund for her daughter, Autum Miller in care of the funeral home. Services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home.
