Burrel L. Barnum, age 69, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at his home near Warsaw, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born on April 11, 1937, at Ava, the son of Boyd and Roxie Barnum.
He attended school at Ava, and on Sept. 2, 1955, enlisted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 30, 1961.
He was employed at Agco Corporation in Independence, and retired in 1992 to Warsaw to be close to Truman Lake and the big crappie. A friend once said that Burrel could catch a fish out of the bathtub.
Burrel was married to Ila Maas on Sept. 5, 1961, and she survives of the home.
Also surviving are three sons, Bob Barnum and his wife, Linda, of Odessa, David Barnum of Cole Camp, and Kenneth Barnum of the home; one granddaughter, Kimberly Williams, and a great-grandson, Haden Williams, all of Ava; a brother, Jack Barnum, and his wife, Nadine, of Independence; numerous relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Burrel L. Barnum were held Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, with the Rev. Art Smith officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Warsaw.
Visitation preceded the service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Benton County Cancer Fund or the Benton County Hospice in care of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw.
Pauline Sellers Wilson, 79

Pauline Sellers Wilson was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Douglas County, the daughter of Bailey and Ethel (Blankenship) Burton and departed this life Aug. 23, 2006, at the age of 79.
Pauline was a lifelong resident of the Ava area. She earned a college degree with a teaching certificate and was employed and retired from the Division of Family Services in Douglas County after 35 years of service. Pauline loved working on the farm, gardening and fishing. Her delight was being with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Pauline and Burl Sellers were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union, two sons were born. On Feb. 22, 1990, Mr. Sellers preceded her in death.
On Jan. 31, 1993, Pauline and John Wilson were united in marriage in Douglas County, at the Frye Church where Pauline was a member.
Pauline was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Bill Burton, and a sister Bertha Haskins.
She is survived by her husband, John, of the home, Ava; two sons, Steven Sellers, Ava, and Gregory and TeNeil Sellers, Ozark; four grandchildren, Brandon, Stephanie, Bryan, Katrina and soon to be Broderick; two sisters, Dessie Buchanan, and Bernice Steele, both of Ava; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Donnie Pruiett officiating. Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Road Runners Car Club to benefit Toys 4 Kids in Douglas County.
Jennifer Sue Canfield, 39

Jennifer Sue Canfield passed from this life in rural Douglas County, surrounded by her loving family.
She entered this life in Phoenix, Ariz., on Nov. 22, 1966, the daughter of Everett and Darlene Sue Canfield.
Jennifer was interested in staying at home with her children, being outside in nature, and spending time with friends. She was always there for her children and took time to become as close as a best friend to them.
Jennifer was a very generous person and gave as much to this world as she could, not only materialistically, but in what she left for the world through her children.
Jennifer was also interested in baking with her mother and sharing her homemade “goodies” with friends and family. Some of her other passions included bingo, where she went with her mother every Saturday night, and playing pool, where she had hoped to win one last tournament. She loved animals and was always ready to take in any needy animal.
Jennifer was preceded in death by her mother, Darlene Sue Canfield, her husband, Tony Madrid, and grandmother, Tharon Canfield.
Jennifer is survived by her father, Everett Canfield, of Gilbert, Ariz.; a son, Justin Canfield, a daughter, Amber Canfield, and a daughter-in-law, Lindsey Henry, all of Ava; two brothers, Kelly Canfield, Denver, Colo., and James Canfield, Tampa, Fla.; a grandmother, Janice Wilson, Springfield; and stepmother, Maria; as well as a host of family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Set Free Church, with the Rev. Lester Turner officiating. Services were under the direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
The family request memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or an animal humane society of your choice.
Virginia Ellen (Woolman) Poindexter, 63

Virginia Ellen Woolman Poindexter, daughter of Clifford Ival Woolman and Dessie Irene Parker Woolman, was born on April 18, 1943, in Springfield, and departed this life on Aug. 23, 2006 in Tulsa, Okla., at the age of 63.
Virginia was a financial aid director. She was a resident of Langley, Okla.
On July 9, 1970, Virginia and John Curtis Poindexter were united in marriage in Kansas City. They were married for 36 years.
She was a member of the Langley Baptist Church and the American Legion Womens Auxiliary in Spavinaw, Okla.
Virginia played and sang in a bluegrass band. She loved quilting, making crafts and porcelain and ceramic dolls. She also loved to travel. Most of all being with her family was her joy.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.
Her survivors include her husband, John Curtis Poindexter of Langley, Okla.; four children, Cheryl Johnson, Oklahoma City, Okla., Charles Johnson, Bartlesville, Okla., Delorus Crawford, Tulsa, Okla., and Clarissa Thornton, Sand Springs, Okla.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Thera Burtt, Eagan, Minn., and Rosemary Cantrell, Dallas, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside service was Monday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m., at Yates Cemetery, east of Ava in Douglas County, with the Pastor Tim Smith officiating.
Visitation was held at 11:00 a.m. to noon Monday prior to the service at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Services were conducted by Clinkingbeards.
Terrence Randal Pahl, 61

Terrence Randal “Randy” Pahl, 61, Tempe, Ariz., died tragically on Aug. 13, 2006 from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident the preceding evening.
He was in the company of his brothers, Neel T. and Dale E. Pahl, who both flew in from Denver.
Randy was born May 4, 1945, at the Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, Calif. He was the son of Herschel A. and Bonnie B. Pahl.
He grew up in a Navy family, receiving his education in public schools in Sunnyvale, Calif., Norfolk, Va., San Diego, Calif., Sanford, Fla., Alexandria, Va, Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan.
He received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry and electronics from Kearney State Teachers College (now University of Nebraska at Kearney) in 1967. While working on his graduate degree, he was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, Grand Island, Neb.
On Jan. 27, 1968, he was married to Janet Wait, in Alliance, Neb.
His professional career took him to Medford, Ore., Denver, Colo., Washington state, and finally to Phoenix, Ariz., where he made major contributions in the area of chemistry and computers. Over the years, Randy received numerous achievement awards.
He is survived by his son, Maclaine Aaron Pahl, of Portland, Ore., and daughter, Paige Elise Pahl; his parents, Bonnie B. and Herschel A. Pahl, captain US Navy (ret), of Ava; and his two brothers, Neel T. Pahl and Dale E. Pahl, of Denver, Colo.; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Lakeshore Mortuary, Mesa, Ariz., with the Rev. Jim Fountain of the Chandler United Methodist Church presiding.
His family requests donations to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
Marvin M. Miller, 72

Marvin M. Miller, 72, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Marvin was born in Brixey, Mo., on Feb. 26, 1934, the son of Doshia (Leek) and Claude E. Miller.
He was married to Erba Hutchins from 1956 to 1980.
He was employed as a machine operator for 30 years at John Deere Harvester in East Moline, Ill., retiring in December 1986. He was a charter member of the Q.C. Bass Club, U.A.W., and Davenport Schuetzen Club. Marvin was an avid fisherman and hunter, including fishing in the first Bassmaster Classic in 1971 at Lake Mead.
He was a taxidermist and a trophy deer hunter and fishing lure maker. Friends and family will miss his enthusiasm for life and his love of the great outdoors. He was a voracious reader of outdoors books and magazines in his never ending quest to be the best. Blessed by a nearly impeccable memory and an “outdoors 6th sense”, his finger was constantly on the pulse of fish and critters. In the early 1970’s, he competed in four bass events placing no lower than 13th, and earned a berth in the 1st Bassmaster Classic. He was very well-known for his bass angling prowess, which led to a legion of friends across the country. After undertaking the goal of harvesting trophy deer, he bagged an average of three Pope and Young class deer every two years.
Survivors include his sons, Rick (Rhonda) Miller and Mike Miller of Bettendorf, Iowa; a granddaughter, Melissa Storck, Tampa Bay, Fla.; one sister, Allie Gentry and husband, Henderson, Ava; five brothers, Lavern (Jessie Mae) Miller, Willow Springs, Therman Miller, LeClaire, Dorman (Sang), Miller, Bettendorf, Iowa, Willis (Sandy) Miller, DeWitt, Iowa, and George (Deanna) Miller, Grayling, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews and a special pet, Bixby.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Miller and Ola Jane Dubil; and his parents, Doshia and Claude Miller.
Visitation was held on Friday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Lynne Morgan Devries, 68

Lynne Morgan DeVries, 68, formerly of Ava, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at her daughter’s home in Port Neches, Texas.
Mrs. DeVries was a native of Chicago, Ill., and lived in the Ava area for 10 years before moving to the Port Neches and Nederland area for 20 years. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Fellowship Baptist church in Nederland.
Mrs. Devries is survived by three daughters, Cheri Banks and husband, Lenny, of Channelview, Texas, Cindy Nichols and husband, Terry, of Port Neches, Texas, and Colleen Berry and husband, Tim, of Houston, Texas; two sons, John DeVries III, of Nederland, Texas, and Scott Devries and wife, Stacie, of Nederland, Texas; one sister, Phyllis Froehle, of Chicago, Ill.; brother-in-law, Art DeVries and wife, Sue, of Oil City, La.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John DeVries.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield, with the Rev. Dale Adams officiating.
Pauline Sellers Wilson, 79

Pauline Sellers Wilson was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Ava, to the late Bailey and Ethel (Bunyard) Burton, and departed this life Aug. 23, 2006, at the age of 79.
Pauline was a lifelong resident of the Ava area. She had a college degree in teaching. She taught in the country schools at Frye, Silver Shade, Mt. Tabor and Walnut Grove.
She began work for the Division of Family Services in July 1952 as a caseworker. She was promoted to the position of county director of the Douglas County office in December 1972. She worked for the Division of Family Services for more than 35 years before retiring.
Pauline and Burl Sellers were united in marriage in 1946 at Mtn. Home, Ark. To this union, two sons were born. On Feb. 22, 1990, Burl preceded her in death.
On Jan. 31, 1993, Pauline and John Wilson were united in marriage at the Frye Church in Douglas County where they both were members.
She is survived by her husband, John, of the home, Ava; two sons, Steven Sellers, Ava, and Gregory and TeNeil Sellers, of Ozark; four grandchildren, Bryan, Katie, Brandon and Stephanie, and soon to be Broderick; two sisters, Bernice Steele and Dessie Buchanan and husband, Ivan, Ava; a sister-in-law, Elsie Huff, Ava; a brother-in-law, Bob Wilson, state of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Pauline loved her home on the farm and her dog, Bailey. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening and catching fish with John down at the lake. She loved playing games with her grandchildren and having birthday parties for her family.
Most of all, she loved her family.
Pauline was preceded in death by her first husband, Burl, her parents, a brother, Bill Burton, and a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Norman Haskins.
Services were held Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Oren Alcorn and Donnie Pruiett officiating. Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.
