Alberta Lee O’Dell was the daughter of James A. and Ruth Hazel (Kelley) Lasater, born on Nov. 21, 1924, in Lockwood.
She died at 12:12 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Ashli O’Dell and her brother and his wife, Dale and Mary Lasater. She was 81.
Alberta spent all of her life in the Lockwood and Golden City area until July 2006 when she moved to Ava.
She married Glenn Dalton O’Dell in Lockwood, on June 3, 1947. They had four children, Glenn, Randy, Renee and Greg.
Alberta was originally a member of the Mt. Nebo Church where she was saved and baptized in Sons Creek in the middle of winter. She was a Sunday school teacher for years. Alberta was a member of the Reeds Baptist Church in Reeds, Mo., at the time of her death.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.
Alberta is survived by her husband, Glenn Dalton O’Dell, Ava; her three sons and their wives, Glenn and Mary O’Dell, Williamston, S.C., Randy and Becky O’Dell, Ava, and Greg and Lana O’Dell, Nevada, Mo; her daughter and husband, Renee and Brad Burton, Ash Grove; her brothers and wives, Leslie and Betty Lasater, California, and Jerry and Kelly Lasater, Springfield; 12 grandchildren, Tim and Trisha O’Dell, Scott O’Dell, LeAnn Ray, Toni Buckwalter, Derek O’Dell, Bryan and Alicia Burton, Amanda and Andy Young, and Zack and Emily Ricketts; eight great-grandchildren, Larisa, Brock and Jacob Luben, Katy Beth O’Dell, Curtis Young, Kaitlyn Buckwalter, Taylor and Trevor Motyl; many nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Reeds Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Needham officiating.
Interment was in Collins Cemetery northeast of Lockwood, under the direction of Pugh Funeral Home of Golden City.
Barbara Jean Davis Mitchell, 74

Barbara Jean Davis Mitchell was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1931, in Valley, Neb.
She was the youngest of five children born to Neal and Bertha Davis.
At the age of 10, her family moved to Ava, where she attended school and graduated from high school.
She met her husband, Clint Mitchell, while he was holding a revival at Gentry Church. They were married on May 22, 1948, at the Ava Highway Church of the Nazarene. To this union, four children were born: Diana, Linda, Joyce and Curtis.
Clint and Barbara started their ministry as “Youth Evangelists of the Ozarks” and their first pastorate began in Hiwasse, Ark.
Barbara was a helpmate to her husband and assisted in his ministry. Their ministry spanned 58 plus years through Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri. They moved to the Tulsa area in 1981 and pastored around the Northeast Oklahoma District until Clint’s retirement in 1993. Barbara worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Oklahoma in Tulsa as an underwriting secretary in New Business from 1983 until her retirement in 1999.
Barbara passed away on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at 9:29 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Okla.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Clint Mitchell; two sisters, Wilma Flynn and Gerry Hailey, both of Ava; her four children, Diana Mitchell, of McCloud, Okla., Linda Sonnenberg and her husband Randy, of Sapulpa, Okla., Joyce Hobbs and her husband Roy, of Glenpool, Okla., and Curtis Mitchell, of Sapulpa, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Chonda Berrier, of Melbourne, Fla., Shannon Crutcher and her husband, Kendall, of Suffolk, Va., Robbie Sonnenberg, of Mannford, Okla., Brina Schoonover and her husband Clayton, of Tulsa, Garrett and Conner Hobbs, of Glenpool, Okla., and Neal Mitchell of Beggs, Okla.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, along with many friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Bertha Davis, two brothers, Lloyd and Jesse Davis, and one nephew, David Hailey.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m., at Central Church of the Nazarene, Tulsa, Okla.
Manford D. Farrow, 81

Manford D. Farrow, the son of William Jesse Farrow and Parelea Anna (Marrow) Farrow, was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Carney, Okla., and departed this life Sept. 13, 2006, at the age of 81 years.
Manford was a resident of the Ava area since 1977, moving here from Owosso, Mich. Manford was employed and retired from General Motors after 30 years of employment. Manford served his country with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW Post 5993, American Legion Post 112, Rebekah Lodge No. 236 and was a member of the Happy Home Freewill Baptist Church.
On Dec. 7, 1963, Manford and Avon Marian Rowell were united in marriage in Michigan; she preceded him in death in l99l.
On July 16, 1992, Manford and Ulla Greene were united in marriage in Ava.
Manford was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rex and Roma.
He is survived by his wife, Ulla, of the home, Ava; one sister, Melba Bruner, of Michigan; two brothers, Hershel Farrow, state of Arkansas, and Joe Farrow, state of Michigan; and many friends.
Services were held Friday, Sept. 15, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.
Visitation was Friday from 9 a.m. to service time.
Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Owosso, Mich. on Sept. 19.
Memorials may be made to Neighbor Helping Neighbor.
Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 5993.
Lavern Cope, 78

Lavern Cope, son of the late Omer Raymond and Opal Olive (Keith) Cope, was born on May 12, 1928, in Wright County, and departed this life on Sept. 15, 2006, at his residence in Mtn. Grove fol-lowing a long illness. He was 78.
Lavern grew up and attended school in Hartville and was united in marriage to Irene McCulley on Nov. 7, 1947. Five children were born to this union.
They had made their home in the Mtn. Grove area for over 44 years.
Lavern enjoyed gardening and loved having children around him. He was a very gentle and kind man, loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. His greatest joy in life was to be surrounded by his family.
He was employed by M&G; Auto Parts in Mtn Grove and Anderson-Parks, Inc., in Springfield.
Following his retirement, he helped older people with their chores, running errands and taking them to their doctor’s appoint-ments.
He was a longtime member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Stigall.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Cope, of their home; three sons, Steve Cope and wife, Yvonne, of Houston, Mike Cope and wife, Mina, Cabool, and Keith Cope and wife, Linda, of St. Louis; two daughters, Sharon Aldridge and husband, Joe, of California, Md., and Janice Rader and hus-band, John, of Bolivar; three broth-ers and their families, his twin brother Lavell Cope and wife, Alvalee, Twin Falls, Idaho, Darrel Cope and wife, Wanda, Hartville, and Wayne Cope and wife, Virginia, of Buhl, Idaho; his brother-in-law and family, Bob McCulley and wife, Brenda, of Mtn. Grove; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces; neph-ews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel, Mtn. Grove, with the Rev. Ronald Turner officiating. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
Emogene Helen Whitted, 83

Emogene Helen Whitted, of Columbia, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Columbia Regional Hospital. She was 83.
She was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Douglas County, to Roscoe and Mae Nelson Swearengin.
On Aug. 4, 1946, she married Stephen Whitted in Seymour.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Mrs. Whitted enjoyed helping others in many ways, including tutoring and teaching students to read. She was a great cook and loved plants, flowers and gardening.
Mrs. Whitted is survived by her husband, Stephen; one daughter, Catherine Collins and husband, Jeff, of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Calvary Baptist Church, Columbia. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church or Gideons International.
Rebecca Steelman, 93

Rebecca Steelman, 93, passed away Sept. 22, 2006.
She was born Nov. 29, 1912, the daughter of James and Josephine (Clark) Schudy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joe.
She attended Ava High School, then after being out of school for 24 years, enrolled at SMS as a first term freshman. She graduated 27 months later and went to Fairbanks School in Springfield as a 6th grade teacher where she spent 20 years, the last 13 years as a school principal.
In 1968, she was selected to join the Teach Corp and spent the summer in Africa where she taught American teaching methods to Ethiopian teachers.
After she retired, Rebecca and Joe bought a mobile home in Texas where they spent 13 winters.
Joe preceded her in death in 1992.
They had three children, Jim, of Judsonia, Ark., Warren, of Houston, Texas, and Barbara, of Springfield; nine grandchildren (two deceased), and nine great-grandchildren.
No services were held at her request and her body was donated to science.
Arrangements were under the direction of Klinger Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte, in Springfield.
Kathy Darlene Downs, 58

Kathy Darlene Downs, daughter of Robert Edward Ridenour and Lola Ann (Medlock) Ridenour, was born June 16, 1948 in Ava, and passed away Sept. 24, 2006 at the age of 58.
On March 8, 1968, Darlene and Donald Lee Downs were united in marriage in Squires. To this union seven children were born.
Darlene was employed at the Douglas County Courthouse for many years. She was dedicated to her family. Darlene was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister who absolutely doted on her grandchildren.
Darlene is survived by two sons Donnie and wife, Karen, of Ava, and Eddie and wife, Missi, of Squires; four daughters, Karry Davis and husband, Steve, of Ava, Robin Lambert and husband, Robert, of Ava, Janette Stover and husband, Matt, of Squires, and Rachel Willis and husband, Daniel, of Ava; five brothers, Jerry Ridenour, Ava, Howard Ridenour, Springfield, Dean Ridenour, Ava, Rick Ridenour, Republic, and Greg Ridenour, of Florida; two sisters, June Copas and Peggy Ridenour, both of Forsyth; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lowell Ridenour; one sister Donna Emerick; one daughter, Teressa Downs; and two grandchildren, Natasha Lambert and Katelin Hicks.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home Ava, with Rev. Donald Potter and Rev. Oren Alcorn officiating.
Burial was in Whites Creek Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Whites Creek Cemetery Fund.
Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava.
Timithy Ray Porterfield, Infant

Timithy Ray Porterfield, the son of James Porterfield and Lisa Shields, was born Sept. 26, 2006, and departed this life Sept. 26, 2006.
Timithy is survived by his parents, and two sisters, Briana Tiff and Brittany Shields, of Ava.
Graveside services will be Friday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m. at the Dogwood Cemetery west of Ava.
Services are under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava.
