Granville Dean "Bud" Akers, 72, Squires, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, in Tunica, Miss.
Bud was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Norwood, the son of Virgil and Ethel (Mulkey) Akers.
On July 3, 1981, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Turner in Longrun, Mo.
Bud was a caring, loving person with a wonderful personality and was known as a jokester with a good sense of humor.
He enjoyed bluegrass music, fishing, gardening and traveling.
He was a selfless man who often gave to help others. His willingness to proudly accept a 10-gallon pen award for donating blood to the Red Cross to benefit others was a sign of his generosity. Ultimately he will be remembered for his love of his children, and dedication to his family.
He was preceded in death by both parents and four brothers.
Bud is survived by his wife Evelyn, three sons Jerry Akers of Mtn. Grove, Phillip Akers and wife, Monica, of the state of California, and John Akers and wife, Chrystal, of Ava; two additional children, Ricky and Vickie; one sister, Carol Akers, of Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Wallace Akers and wife, Irene, of Mtn. Grove, Russell Akers, of the state of Idaho, and Leon Akers and wife, Gloria, of Cabool; seven grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services for Bud will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 4, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Dale Roberts and Gaylon Turner officiating.
Burial will follow in the Thornfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in Barnes Family Funeral Home.

Shannen R. Dobbs, 27

Shannen Ray Dobbs, son of Ray and Margie (Potter) Dobbs, was born Dec. 24, 1977, in Davenport, Iowa, and departed this life Feb. 22, 2005, at the age of 27.
Shannen was a lifelong resident of Ava. He was employed as a carpenter in home construction.
On June 4, 1999, Shannen and Susanne Emrick were united in marriage in Ava.
Shannen was saved at his maternal grandparents’ house at a young age. He enjoyed riding ATVs, hunting and fishing, and listening to music.
Shannen was preceded in death by one son, Tyler Ray Dobbs.
Shannen is survived by his wife, Susanne, Ava; two children, Hayle and Katelyn; his parents, Ray and Margie Dobbs; one brother, Preston Dobbs and his wife, Cristi; one sister, Amanda Dobbs; one nephew, Chance; one niece, Laken Dobbs, all of Ava; two special aunts, Linda Scott and Pearl McFarlin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.
Interment was in Ava Cemetery.

Darrell R. Shortt, 73

Darrell R. Shortt, 73, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005.
He was born on July 28, 1931, in Ongo, Mo., the son of Lee and Nora Shortt.
He was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Kathleen Nelson on June 17, 1952.
Darrell graduated from Ava High School in Ava. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving four years, during the Korean conflict. After serving on active duty, Darrell returned to Missouri and became a Reservist, serving eight years. He also began working for Sho-Me Power Coop in Marshfield, retiring after 37 years.
Darrell also served his community through many clubs and organizations. Some of those included being a master Mason and a past master of the Sparta Lodge, No. 296 and DDGM of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. He was also a member of the Eastern Star in Sparta, Abou Ben Adhem Temple, Springfield, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J. USA in Joplin, as well as the American Legion, Webster County Post No. 142.
Darrell became a Christian as a teenager and was baptized in Swan Creek. He was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church of Marshfield.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Arlie, Everett, Herman, Milford, Sam, and Lester.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathleen; daughter, Jean Walden and husband, Bob; daughter, June Jinks; son, Tom Shortt and wife, Vicki; grandchildren, Dawn, Autumn, Matthew, Jason, Iris, and Austin; step-grandchildren Brandon, Brady, and Victoria; great-grandchildren Ariel, Chloe, Joseph, Aurora, and Sam; step-great-grandchildren Madison, Emily and Noah; one brother, Dewey Shortt; and two sisters, Pearl Hull and Bonnie Rogers; a large group of relatives and friends; as well as, his much loved dog, Hobbs.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Adams Funeral Home in Ozark.
Masonic services were held graveside immediately afterwards at Sparta Cemetery.

Bernard Ray Heard, 66

Bernard Heard was born one of three children to Blaine and Gertrude Harvey Heard in Omaha, Neb., on Oct. 14, 1938, and departed this life on Feb. 26, 2005, in Springfield.
Bernard grew up in the Norwood area and spent most of his life in the Kansas City area where he drove trucks, working last as a spotter for a large warehouse.
On July 26, 1958, Bernard and Joann Hopper were married in Mountain Grove, and to this union, two children were born.
He loved to watch NASCAR races, fishing with family, he will be greatly missed by loved ones and in quiet times he read all types of literature, but most of all he loved being with family. Bernard was a member of the Teamsters Union, a Mason, and made his profession of faith at a young age.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Joann, of Lee's Summit; two children, Debra Heard, of Overland Park, Kans., and Greg Alan Heard, and fiancée, Brandy Rhodes, of Lee's Summit; two grandsons, Alan and James Heard, of Lee's Summit; his father, Blaine Heard, of Rogersville; and two sisters and their husbands, Sherry and Randy Huff, Sparta, and Donna and Jerry Smith, of Rogersville.
Bernard was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude.
Memorial services for Bernard Heard will be Saturday, March 5, 2 p.m., in Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Oscar Cunningham officiating.
Burial to follow in the Brushyknob Cemetery.
Norma LaVern Duckworth, 78

Norma LaVern (Guthery) Duckworth was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Douglas County to George and Fay (Sanders) Guthery, and passed away on March 7, 2005, at the age of 78.
Norma and Norman Duckworth were united in marriage on March 8, 1946, in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union, three sons were born, Dale Eugene, Ronnie Dean and Randy Lee.
Norma was a member of Mt. Tabor General Baptist Church.
Norma was a clerk for several years at the Discount Mart in Ava and was a fulltime homemaker. She loved her family, friends, farm, quilting, gardening, cooking and playing dominoes with special friends Arlee Murray and Floyd Roberts.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Ronnie Dean and one brother, Damon Guthery.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Norman, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in law, Dale Duckworth and special friend, Bonnie White, of Springfield, Cindy (Duckworth) Hollis, and husband, Glen, of Bloomfield, and Randy Duckworth and wife, Ann, of Ava; six grandchildren, Jeremy Duckworth and wife, Preta, of Kannapolis, N.C., Julie Duckworth, of Springfield, Rhonda Duckworth, Strafford, Jason Duckworth and wife, Lorrie, Bloomfield, Eric Duckworth, Ava, Becky Duckworth, Columbia; and daughter-in-law, Johnnie Duckworth, of Springfield. Norma was blessed to have four great-grandchildren, Miti Duckworth, of North Carolina, Torrie and Caleb, and Holden Duckworth, all of Bloomfield, and one brother, Delmar Guthery and wife, Elizabeth, of Ava, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, in Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Ronnie Pinckney and Lee Maggard officiating.
Interment will be in the Ava Cemetery.
Visitation will be tonight (Thursday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.

Lonnie H. Moore, 91

Lonnie H. Moore, son of James A. Moore and Lola Ipock Moore, was born on July 14, 1913, in Douglas County, and passed away on March 6, 2005, in Springfield, at the age of 91 years.
Lonnie was a lifelong resident of the Girdner community. He was a farmer and a bus driver.
On Dec. 14, 1944, Lonnie and Wanda Brooke were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union, three children were born.
Lonnie was a member of the First Congressional Methodist Church at Girdner.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
His survivors include his wife, Wanda, of Ava; three children and their spouses, Gary and Bevy Moore, Wilda and Leon Potter, and Kyle and Carol Moore, all of Ava; ten grandchildren; one step-grandchild; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; one step great great-grandchild; special niece, Thelma Jones, and sister-in-law, Betty Moore; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held Tuesday, March 8, 10 a.m., at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Dwight Wilson and Rev. Tom Johnson officiating.
Interment was in the Girdner Cemetery.

Eula Hollis, 90

She was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in Bartlett, Texas, to the late Reginald and Sudie (Morris) Teague.
Services for Eula Hollis, 90, of Memphis, Texas, were Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 10 a.m., at Hughs Memorial Chapel in Memphis, Texas, with her grandson, Pastor Rob Hollis, officiating, assisted by Rev. Bruce Howard.
Burial was at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at Nogal Cemetery near Carrizozo, New Mexico, with Rev. Hayden Smith officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home of Memphis, Texas.
Mrs. Hollis passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, in Memphis, Texas.
She was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in Bartlett, Texas, to the late Reginald and Sudie (Morris) Teague.
She grew up in central Texas.
She married J. N. "Shorty" Hollis on Dec. 24, 1933, in the parsonage of First Baptist Church in Texaco, New Mexico, where her grandson, Rob, is now pastor.
Mrs. Hollis lived in Plainview, Texas for a number of years before moving to Ava on July 4, 1962.
She later moved to Carrizozo, New Mexico, residing there for nearly 20 years. She moved to Memphis, Texas in June of 1997.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Carrizozo, New Mexico, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Mrs. Hollis was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 28, 1992; two infant sons; and one brother, Virgil Teague.
She is survived by four sons, Richard Hollis, Sr., of Memphis, Texas, Gerald Hollis, of Memphis, Texas, Tommie Hollis, Ava, and Donnie Hollis, of Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ursula Edith Luettgenau, 78

Ursula Luettgenau was born the daughter of Berned and Alma Brede Backhaus, in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, Germany, on Feb. 26, 1927, and departed this life on March 6, 2005, in her daughter's home.
In January 1958, Ursula and Georg Luettgenau were united in marriage in Munich, Germany.
Ursula was a devoted wife and mother, who gave selflessly as a German war nurse in World War II, and continued giving throughout her life. She loved her animals, cats particularly, as though they were her children, she was creative and expressed her creativity working with wool, weaving many a beautiful tapestry. She was also a fighter who gave all that she had in her struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. We will all remember her strong spirit and feisty words with joy and reverence.
Ursula is survived by a son and his wife, Oliver and Rebekka Luettgenau, of Wasola area; two daughters, Michaela and her husband Ron Webb, of Ava, and Patricia Luettgenau, of San Pedro, Calif.; five grandchildren, Sara, Erik, Kati, David, and Megan Webb, all of Ava.
Local arrangements were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.
Dexter Walter Hawkins, 75

Dexter Hawkins, the son of Newton A. Hawkins and Edith (Smith) Hawkins, was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Grabeel, Mo., and departed this life March 2, 2005, at the age of 75.
On April 8, 1950, Dexter and Nelita Farmer were united in marriage in Wilhoit, Mo. They were blessed with seven children.
Dexter was a lifelong resident of Noble where he was a beef and dairy farmer and milked for over 50 years. Dexter was a member of the Franklin Grove Southern Baptist Church. He enjoyed researching his family genealogy and corresponding with distant relatives. His hobbies included growing flowers, mowing his yard and helping maintain his family cemetery.
Dexter was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kathryn, a son, David, two brothers, Calvin and Richard, and a sister, Nora Sleeter.
His survivors include his wife, Nelita, of the home, Noble; four sons, Don Hawkins, Las Vegas, Nev., Dan, Doug and Dennis Hawkins, all of Noble; one daughter, Debra Delp, of Noble; 10 grandchildren, Tracy, Josh, Dillon, Stacy, Dalton, Delanna, Vanessa, Dara, Lori and Sarah Beth; two great-grandchildren; Taylor and Tyler; one brother, Ralph Hawkins, Hutchison, Kan.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, in the Sims Cemetery, Ozark County, with the Rev. Paul Welch officiating. Services were under the direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Keaton Eli Paul, Infant

Keaton Eli Paul, infant son of Daniel and Lori Kay (Lakey) Paul of Oldfield, passed away Monday, March 21, 2005, in Cox Medical Center South, Springfield.
Keaton was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Dallas Lakey.
Keaton is survived by his parents, Daniel and Lori Paul; his brother, Tyler Paul; his paternal grandparents, Tinsie Paul, Ava, and Danny and Kathi Paul, of Oldfield; his maternal grandmother, Helen Lakey; many aunts, uncles and friends of the family.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 24, in the Stillings Cemetery with Rev. Lee Hampton officiating, under the care and direction of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ava.
