Thadia Sue Gray Rouse, 94

Thadia Sue Rouse was born May 27, 1913, in Clinton, to David F. and Carrie McKeigg Massey.

She died Aug. 2, 2007, at the age of 94.

In 1930, Sue graduated from high school at Deepwater, Mo.

On March 15, 1930, she married Virgil McLane Gray, and their home was blessed with two children, Pamela Sue and Virgil David.

While Virgil was fighting in World War II, Sue worked as a beautician in Kansas City. They then purchased and managed Clinton Quality Chick Hatchery.

In 1958, Sue and Virgil moved to Burlington, Colo., where they owned and operated Stevens Motel and Café.

Virgil preceded her in death on July 1, 1966.

On Nov. 8, 1971, Sue married Howard Rouse.

She worked in several restaurants and drug stores in Burlington, Colo.

In 1994, Sue and Howard moved to Ava.

Howard preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1995.

Sue was preceded in death by both parents and her husbands, Virgil and Howard.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Virgil David, and two brothers.

Sue actively served her Lord Jesus in her church memberships all her life. She worked as church secretary in Clinton, Mo., and Burlington, Colo., and taught adult Sunday school classes and helped wherever she was needed in the church.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Pam Karges and husband, Blair, of Ava; five grandchildren, Melanie, Jordan, Tabitha, Deidra and Tara; a niece, Peggy Jean Knight; a brother-in-law, Bill Gray, and a special dog, Taffy; as well as other family and friends.

A celebration of Sue's life and faith was held Monday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m., at the Ava Family Funeral Home.

Burial was at the Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, at 3 p.m. Monday.

Visitation was held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at Ava Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Arlewis Adams, 79

Arlewis Adams, of Strafford, went to Heaven on Aug. 5, 2007, after suffering a tragic accident at the age of 79.

Arlewis was born on June 25, 1928, in Lawndale, Mo., to the late Thurlow and Beeda (Hensley) Adams. He accepted Jesus as his savior at the age of 17.

He was united in marriage to Pernie Hathcock on March 1, 1958, in Ava, and they shared over 49 years together.

They faithfully attended Eastside General Baptist church for 47 years. Arlewis retired from the garment industry in 1993. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Velma Denney and Ellavern Adams, and a son, Douglas Adams.

Survivors include his loving wife, Pernie; a son, Dennis Adams; a sister, Earlene Owens; a cousin raised with him, Geneva Piland; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m., at Klingner-cope Family Funeral Home at White Chapel, Springfield. Burial followed in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Edith Brennan Farmer, 100

Mrs. Edith Brennan (Mason) Farmer, 100, longtime Dewey, Okla., area resident, passed away at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in the Jane Phillips Medical Center.

A native of Missouri, Edith Brennan, Mason was born Sept. 13, 1906 at Tedrick. She was the daughter of William James Joseph Mason and Emma (Graham) Mason.

She was reared and completed her education in rural Missouri schools. In 1922, the family moved to Dewey, Okla.

She was united in marriage on Oct. 17, 1927 at Ava, to Edward Ray Farmer and they established their first home at Drury, where they farmed and Mr. Farmer was employed as a ranch hand.

In July 1928, Edith and Edward moved to Dewey, Okla., when he became an employee of the Dewey Portland Cement Company. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1978 and Edith had remained on the family farm living in retirement.

Mrs. Farmer was a charter member of the First Church of God in Dewey.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Eugene and Joann Farmer, and David William and Brenda Farmer, all of Dewey, Okla.; her grandchildren, Ken Farmer, Barbara Ogan., Brenda Thomas, Steve Snelson and Pam Witt; 13 great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Milo Riedel, of Dewey, Okla.

In addition to her husband, Edward, she was preceded in death by her father; mother; daughter, Mrs. Joan (Farmer) Riedel; three brothers, Eddie, Melvin and Clarence Mason; and three sisters, Mrs. Mae Hale, Mrs. Pearl Bird and Mrs. Rosie Anderson.

Charles D. Jamison Sr., 80

Charles Duane Jamison Sr., 80 of Vanzant, passed away July 25, 2007 at his home.

He was born in Mason City, Ill., on April 22, 1927, the third child of Arthur Ray and Ollie (Yates) Jamison.

He was born during the depression; times were hard and the family was poor, but the children did not realize it.

After completing the 8th grade, he left home to work for his uncle, Roy, in Granger, Iowa.

While working in Iowa, he would meet his future wife, Fern Nash, in Madrid.

Charles returned home and joined the Navy on March 22, 1945, serving four years, six months and two days. All four years were served out of Honolulu; two years were spent on the ships, LST 1078 and PCE900, two years on shore as a Signalman on a tower at Pearl Harbor.

Charles and Fern were united in marriage after his first two years of duty, to this union six children were born, Everett Wayne, Charles Jr, Leroy, Ray, Linda and Martha.

He received his honorable discharge on Sept. 23, 1949 and returned to Iowa where he worked for his father-in-law for a year, and then his Uncle Roy, helped him start farming for himself.

The next several years were spent on farms in Iowa, then the family moved to Thida, Ark., in 1963. In 1964, they moved to Judsonia, Ark., where Charles operated an ESSO Station. Charles began working as an oiler and then crane operator on the Arkansas River locks and dams. The family moved to Kempton, Ind., in 1969 and he worked as a crane operator on highway and interstate bridge construction. Shortly after moving near Little Rock, Ark., he started his own landscaping and building site preparation business. In 1983, Charles became semi-retired and moved near Vanzant. At this time the only child still at home was Ray.

At age 66, he was tired of being retired and went back to work as a crane operator for a company that constructed large railroad bridges. During this time he worked in Kansas near Grand Island, then Dover and Wilmington, Del., on sewer projects. He would also spend time working in seven states for a railroad bridge company. This continued until 2001, at the age of 73, he retired due to his health, but continued to work on his farm until his passing.

Charles was an avid bluegrass music fan and played the banjo until he had a stroke in 2002, but by creating a way to hold a pick he was able to continue playing the guitar. He loved his family and appreciated his friends. He believed Jesus Christ was the son of God and his Lord and savior.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Louise Vaughn, Ernest (Ernie) Jamison and Noel June Jamison.

He is survived by his wife, Fern, of the home; his sons, Everett (Wayne) of Denison, Texas, Charles Jr. (Chuck) of Little Rock, Ark., Leroy (Roy) of Hensley, Ark. and Ray of Vanzant; his daughters, Linda Rorem of Pacifica, Calif., and Martha (Marty) Stewart of Drexel; sisters, Vera Hanoka of Decatur, Ill., and Eva White of Ava; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Services were at 10 a.m, Monday, July 30, at the funeral chapel. Burial with full military honors was in the Pleasant Mound Cemetery near Vanzant, under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.

Rolla A. Hodges, 85

Rolla A. Hodges, the son of Edmond Hodges and Eugenia E. (Summers) Hodges, was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Douglas County, and departed this life July 30, 2007 at the age of 85.

Rolla grew up and lived in Douglas County, and later moved to Taney County. He graduated from Ava High School. Rolla served his country during World War II with the Army Air Corps as a Bl7 Gunner. He was a dairy and beef farmer. Rolla attended the New Mansion Church.

On May 17, 1947, Rolla and Ruth Marie Maggard were united in marriage in Brown Branch. Rolla and Ruth were blessed with three children.

Rolla loved fishing, horses, telling stories, gardening, attending sale barn auctions, visiting with friends and being with his grandchildren and family.

Rolla was preceded in death by his parents, and 11 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Marie, Bradleyville; three children, Patsy Horner, Forsyth, Roger Hodges and wife, Dede, Bradleyville, and Vicki Clark and husband, Ray, Aurora; seven grandchildren, Ritchie, Summer, Brad, Melanie, Darren, Bridgette and Jarred, who is serving a 3rd tour with the Marines in Iraq at this time; five great-grandchildren, Dustin, Alex, Sydney, Hailey, Olivia and two on the way; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the New Mansion Church at Bradleyville, with the Revs. Jeff Marsh and Bill Austin officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mills Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to Gideon International or Mills Cemetery.

Inez Jean Stierlen, 75

Inez Jean Stierlen, the daughter of John and Pauline Klein, was born on April 10, 1932, in North Dakota, and passed away at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, on July 25, 2007, at the age of 75 years.

Inez moved to the Ava area, from Eager, Ariz., in June 2006 for health reasons. Inez was faithful to her Lord.

On Aug. 20, 1967, Inez was united in marriage to Lester Stierlen. This union of two families lasted for 40 years.

Inez and Lester enjoyed traveling and visiting family all over the U.S. Inez especially enjoyed cooking, the travel, her family and especially the "wee" ones.

Inez was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Brandner; her parents; two brothers, Walter Klein and Leonard Klein; and three sisters, Ruth Ulrich, Elva Walth, and Ida Slama.

She is survived by her husband, Lester, of the home; two sons and their families, Donald and wife, Jan, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Randy and wife, Cecelia, of Miami, Ariz.; one daughter, Paula and husband, Ron Welch, of Eager, Ariz.; three stepdaughters, Judy and husband, Lloyd (Skeeter) Bastin, of Ava, Kathleen and husband, Robert Potter, of Ava, and Leslie Gale and husband, Dennis Johnson, of Williams, Minn. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, along with a host of other close family and friends.

Memorial services were held at Girdner Church on Saturday, July 28, with services to also be held in Eager, Ariz.

William Andrew "Andy" Nation, 18

William Andrew Nation, son of Anthony and Gretta Lynn (Garrison) Nation, was born on March 16, 1989, in Montgomery, Ala., and passed away on July 25, 2007, in Norwood, at the age of 18.

Andy was a resident of Norwood community with his grandparents for the past seven months, moving from Kansas City. He worked as a lifeguard. Andy loved fishing, hunting, skate boarding, music and loved to make people laugh. He was a Christian.

Andy is survived by his mother, Gretta Nation of Brandon, Fla.; his father, Anthony, and wife, Sonya Nation, of Springdale, Ark.; three brothers, Tyler, Austin and Quest Nation, all of Springdale, Ark.; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Katie Garrison, Norwood, and paternal grandparents, Thomas and Mimi Nation, Little Rock, Ark.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 28, at 11 a.m., at the Denlow Cemetery, Norwood.

Services were conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Judith "Judy" Denney, 44

Judith Francis Denney, the daughter of James D. Miller and Mary J. (Goss) Miller, was born Jan. 7, 1963, in Gainesville, and departed this life July 23, 2007, at the age of 44.

Judith was a life-long resident of Ava. She obtained an associate degree and served as Douglas County Circuit Clerk and Recorder for eight years.

She was a member of the Ava Assembly of God Church and also attended Clark Church.

Judith loved traveling and enjoyed working with people in the community. She enjoyed singing and she loved being with her children and family. She was a Mom to many.

Judith and Jeff Denney were united in marriage May 16, 198l, in Ava. Judith and Jeff were married for 20 years and blessed with three children.

Judith was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ted and Marian Goss and Elsie and Charlie Miller.

She is survived by her three children, Joshua Denney, Ozark, Jessica Denney and Jacob Denney, both of Ava; her parents, James and Mary Miller, Ava; two sisters and their spouses, Debbie Tabor and Jeff, and Jamie Boyd and Buddy, both of Ava; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Gary Stigall officiating.

Interment will follow in the Denney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time today.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International or American Cancer Society.
