Vera Harper
Vera A. (Toots) Harper, 90, of Qulin, Mo., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Three Rivers Healthcare-South Campus in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Born Sept. 23, 1911, in Dexter, Mo., daughter of the late Hugh and Clara Burr Joins, she was a homemaker, a member of the Osborn General Baptist Church and a member of the Campbell Rebekah Lodge.
On April, 1931, she married
Chester Lee Barron Harper, who preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Reta Snider and husband, Ed, of Poplar Bluff; two nieces, Janet Morphis and Pat Wheeling, both of Poplar Bluff; one nephew, Carroll Joins of St. Louis, Mo.
She was preceded in death by one brother, David Joins.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 16, at the Landess Funeral Home in Campbell.
Funeral services wil be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Ed Runyon and Mark Book officiating.
Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery in Campbell.
Irene Rose
Irene V. Rose, 84, of Desha, Ark., formerly of Malden, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at the Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Ark.
Born Nov. 1, 1917, in Glennonville, Mo., daughter of the late Riley and Lillie Harper Davis, she was retired from Leicht Electric and a former member of the Airport Baptist Church in Malden.
On May 27, 1933, in Qulin, Mo., she married
Clarence Homer Rose, who preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1979.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Qualls and Joyce Foster and husband, Gerald, all of Malden and Katie Helm and husband, Jack, of Desha; one son, Kenneth Rose and wife, Kathy, of Flippin, Ark.; two brothers, Ralph Davis and wife, Georgia, of Collinsville, Ill. and Arthur Davis and wife, Helen, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; one sister, Laverne Whitehead, of Maryland Heights, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Rose, of Salado, Ark.; 19 grandchildren, Wade, Penny and Renie Rose, Carolyn Oakley, Mary Kay Silveria, Jody, Denny and Shannon Stevens, Mike Rose, Kimberley Jackson, Missy Sherberth, Bruce Qualls, Jamie Crutcher, Chris Helm, Kerry, Keith and Kelly Rose, Kristi Hart and Chance Rose; 34 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Jimmy Rose; four grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Schrader and two brothers, Homer and James Davis.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 16, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Wallace officiating.
John Wells
John Henry "Hank" Wells, 75, of Shafter, Calif., formerly of Cardwell, Mo., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, in Bakersfield, Calif.
Born May 19, 1926, in Leachville, Ark., he was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII, a member of the American Legion, a retired heavy equipment operator for Shell CA Production and a member of the Shafter Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Olene Wells, of the home; three sons, Terry and Phillip Wells, both of Bakersfield and Brent Wells, of Shafter; two daughters, Janelle Zolman, of Cardwell and Sheila Johnson, of Bakersfield; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bernal Wells, of McEwen, Tenn., Alvin Wells, of Paragould, Ark. and Alfred Wells, of Broken Arrow, Okla. and two sisters, Margaret Noel, of Arnold, Mo. and Mary Stougard, of Molene, Ill.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Nov. 16, at the Peters Funeral Home in Shafter.
A.J. York
A.J. (Andrew) York, 85, of Campbell, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Three Rivers Healthcare -South Campus in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Born May 10, 1916, in Holcomb, Mo., son of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Patterson York, he was a retired tool and die maker.
On Aug. 13, 1937, in Corning, Ark., he married
Angeline Vaillancourt, who survives of the home.
Survivors also include four daughters, Barbara Buckland, of Wixom, Mich., Shirley (Mickie) Olampo, of Campbell, Darlean Mather, of Wall Lake, Mich. and Karen Wood and husband, David, of Brownsburg, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Reginald Buckland, Andrew Lewis, Justyne Manning, Robert and Stephen Mather, David and Tony Newman, Stacey Ort and Ryan Wood; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Opal McMunn, of Campbell, Muriel Fugate, of Vale, Ore. and Vernice Eagen, of Seattle, Wash. and one brother, John York, of Eugene, Ore.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Millard, Hobert and Yearst York and one sister, Gladys Hardesty.
No services are planned.

Mary Coutts
Mary Ordway Wickham Coutts, born in Kennett, Mo., on Jan. 23, 1915, died on Nov. 9, 2001, at the Northern Virginia Community Hospital.
Mrs. Coutts was the daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Fred O. Wickham, U.S. Army (Jessie Pearl Hawkins) of Kennett. She was the granddaughter of Representative C.P. Hawkins of Dunklin County and the great-grandaughter of Judge J.M. Waltrip of Clarkton.
As a child she accompanied her parents on tours across the country and abroad. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Kansas and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
She met her late husband, James Winfield Coutts, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, while accompanying her parents to a tour at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. She shared her husband's career, and during World War II supported fellow paratroop wives by publishing a regular newsletter.
She was an avid amateur actress and participated regularly in local little theater productions while stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. She raised three children while traveling the world on military assignments. She had a continuing and abiding interest in the care and treatment of animals and her home was never without "several" cats. She and her husband returned to her family home in Kennett upon his retirement from the San Francisco Retail Dry Goods Association. She was an active member of the Kennett Community, a mainstay of the local Humane Society, and a supporter of the Kennett Library. She recently contributed to the fund for the relocation and modernization of the library.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Jack W. Schwartz (Jessie Augusta Wickham), of San Diego, Calif; her children, Kathleen Coutts Murphy, of Leavenworth, Kans., Mary Coutts Beck, of Arlington, Va., James Allen Coutts, of El Toro, Calif.; her grandchildren, Erin H.M. Akin, of Wurzburg, Germany, Ian Henderson Murphy, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and her great-grandchildren, Hilary Lee Akin and Stephanie Kathleen Akin, of Wurzburg, Germany. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. She will be buried with her husband at Arlington National cemetery on November 26.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Caruthersvile Humane Society, P.O. Box 345, Caruthersville, Missouri, 63830.
Bonnie Dawson
Bonnie Mitchell Dawson, 78, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Kennett, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Florissant.
Born April 13, 1923, in Arbyrd, Mo., daughter of the late James A. and Clara Belle Trantham Russell, she was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Kennett.
On June 20, 1948, she married
William Boyd Mitchell, who preceded her in death April 20, 1974. On Oct. 20, 1978, she married
Buel "Shorty" Dawson, who preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1995.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin, Hawkins and E.J. Russell and one sister, Lillie Mae Manley.
Survivors include two daughters, Roxie Nieroda of Hazelwood, Mo. and Dixie L. Wallace of Wesley Chapel, Fla.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 18, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett with the Rev. Ed Jansson officiating.
Burial will follow at the Oak Ridge cemetery in Kennett.
Pallbearers are Bob Redman, Keith Westerfield, Glen Leach, Tom Kinsey, Bob Lamb and John Tant.
Bertha Floyd
Bertha "Doe" Floyd, 69, of Senath, Mo., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at her residence.
Born March 24, 1932, in Senath, she was the daughter of the late A.C. "Slim" and Frances E. Goodrich McFall.
On Aug. 26, 1949, she married
Doyle Wayne Floyd.
Survivors include one son, Danny Floyd and his wife, Rita, of Cleveland, Okla.; four sisters, Glennon Swindle of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Nelda Boone of Kennett; Emma Lou Swindle and Faye Swindle, both of Eupora, Miss.; two grandchildren, Josh and Jeff Floyd and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Kenney Floyd.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Small and Dorothy Palmer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Senath Church of Christ with Rev. Dale Rickman and Greg Pollock officiating.
Burial was in Lulu cemetery near Senath.
Pallbearers were Josh Floyd, Jeff Floyd, Larry Smotherman, Faron Smotherman, Byron Small, Don Swindle, Herman Swindle and Wade Swindle.

James Gowan
James "Sonny" Gowan, 72, of Steele, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Blytheville, Ark.
Born Thursday, Jan. 3, 1929, in Denton, Mo., son of the late William Henry and Artie Mae James Gowan, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a farm worker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Johnny Clinton Gowan of Louisa, Ky.; a daughter, Jimmy Gail Gowan of Naugatuck, W. Va.; three sisters, Opal Steward of Blytheville, Barbara Gown of Steele and Doris Marie McCollum of Columbus, Miss.; a brother, Talmage Eugene Gown of Oak Harbor, Wash. a granddaughter, Amber Cherelle Gown of Columbus and a grandson, Johnny Clinton Gowan II, also of Columbus.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Steele with the Rev. Joe Thompson officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery at Steele.
Maggie Jackson
Maggie Leoda Jackson, 100, of Senath, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in the Senath Nursing Center in Senath.
Born April 16, 1901, in Leapwood, Tenn., daughter of the late Tommie and Tennie Tacker, she was a member of the Bible Grove Church.
Survivors include four sons, Carlos and W.T. Jackson of Senath, Max Jackson of Kennett and Ralph Jackson of Sikeston, Mo., one daughter, Barbara Roark of Poplar Bluff, Mo. one brother, Paul Tacker of Indiana; three sisters, Georgia Horton, Abby Essery and Mabel Foster, all of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Joe Neal Jackson, a daughter, Mae Nell Cates, three brothers, Joe, Ezra and Brady Tacker, a sister, Morene Wyatt and three granddaughters.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 17, at the McDaniel Funeral Service Chapel in Senath with the Revs. Carroll McGruder, Doug Clinton, Vernon Purser and Virgil Weeks officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Gardens cemetery in Kennett.
Pallbearers were Jamie Cates, Sonny Jackson, Scottie Jackson, Neal Jackson, Tim Jackson and Tom Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers were Daniel, Dustin, Brad, Matthew, Chris, Jason, Jeremy, Matt, Aaron, Jordan, Graham and Nick.
Alma Rowland
Alma Joyce Rowland, 49, of Kennett, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.
Born August 21, 1952, in Piggott, Ark. she was a daughter of Norman Galloway of Calico Rock, Ark. and Thelma Settlemire Galloway Bridwell of Imboden, Ark.
Survivors include long time companion Charles Lasswell, a daughter, Lerin Rowland of Kennett; as brother, Gene Galloway of Kennett; three step-brothers, Eugene, Wayne and Glenn Galloway of Calico Rock; two step-sisters, Darlene and Debbie Galloway of Calico Rock.
Memorial services are at 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 18, in the McDaniel Funeral Service Chapel in Kennett.
