Howard Nichols

Howard Eugene Nichols, 85, of Guntersville, Ala., died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala.

Born April 17, 1918, in Oklahoma, son of the late Ben Bedeese and Lola Lee Riddle Nichols, he was a U.S. Army veteran, member of the American legion Post 1983 and was active in Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 332 Guntersville. He as a member of the Marshall Masonic Lodge 209, Shriner Cahabe Temple of Huntsville, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree of Sacramento, Calif. and a member of the First Baptist Church in Guntersville.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Christian Nichols, of Guntersville; one daughter, Deanna Johnson, of Gadsden, Ala.; one brother, John Nichols, of Byers, Texas; two sisters, Lena O'Brien, of Byers and Lydia Tomlin, of Seminole, Texas and one grandchild, Terri Robenstine, of Guntersville.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Lulu cemetery near Senath, Mo.

Pat Sale

Pat Sale, 64, of Malden, Mo., formerly of Gideon, Mo. died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Born Aug. 6, 1938, in Gideon, daughter of the late Walter and Marie Rogers Walker, she was a homemaker, a member of the Malden American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and of the Baptist faith.

She was formerly married to Roy A. Sale, Jr., of Cape Girardeu, Mo.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Cook and husband, Donald and Yvonne Sale, all of Malden; two sons, Ike Sale and wife, Katrina, of Gaston, S.C. and James Sale and wife, Liz, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; three sisters, Margaret Riley and Betty Brown, both of Malden and Sue Campbell, of Gideon; four brothers, Dale and Scott Walker, both of Garden City, Ga., Russell Walker, of Parma, Mo. and Jerry Walker, of Gideon; 12 grandchildren, Christy Allen, Michelle Rowell, Josh Witty, Timmy, Ikie, Jillian and Ross Sale, Chuck, Lesley and Adam Cook and Chandelle and Justin Spencer and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, David Michael Sale.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Landess Funera lHome in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Bootheel Youth Museum, 700 N. Douglas, Malden, Mo. 63863 or to any children's charity.

Gerald Vaughn

Gerald Vaughn, 71, of Cardwell, Mo., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Senath Nursing Rehab in Senath, Mo.

Born March 15, 1932, in Cardwell, he was the son of the late Dalton and Ella Mae Jones Vaughn.

Suvivors include his wife, Amy Vaughn, of Cardwell; two sons, Gerald D. Vaughn, of Cardwell and Dalton Bret Vaughn and wife, Sonya, of Fenton, Mich.; two daughters, Lisa Howard and husband, John, of Mt. Morris, Mich. and Judy Harris and husband, Phil, of Jerome, Ariz.; one brother, Bobby G. Vaughn, of Burton, Mich.; one sister, Shirley Barnd, of Cardwell; seven grandchildren, Angela and Joseph Porter, Joey and Gerald E. Vaughn and Edward, Jessica and John Daniel Howard and one great-grandchild, Joshua Porter.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Arbyrd, Mo. with DeWayne Jones officiating.

Burial was in the Cardwell cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike, J.T. and Jerry Jones, John Howard, Mike Vaughn and Joe Callahan.

Honorary pallbearers were Chester Mething and Jim and Jerry Callahan.

Lillie Phebues

Lillie Mae Phebues, 95, of Hayti, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at Pemiscot Memorial Helath Systems in Hayti.

Born on May 15, 1908 in Swift, Mo., daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth and Ulis Grant Prince, she was a member of the Hayti Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In 1923, she married John D. Bassin, who preceded her in death, she then married Chester Phebues on May 15, 1963, who preceded her in death on May 26, 1966. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Willie Hendricks and three brothers, Dode, Charlie and Roy Prince. Survivors include three sons, Johnnie Bass of Fort Collins, Colo., George Bass of Pendleton, Ore., and Floyd Bass of Warden, Ill.; three daughters, Helen Townes of Bonne Terre, Mo., Ann Holtsford of Madison, Ill., and Dorothy Nail of Hayti; 27 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 26 great great-grandchilden.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Hayti with the Rev. John Keel officiating.

Burial was in the Maple cemetery at Caruthersville, Mo.

Pallbearers were Bobby Irions, Ron Birmingham, Wayne Keller and Reggie Bunn.

John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Pierce

Ruth G. Pierce, 76, of Steele, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 at the Heritage Nursing Center in Kennett.

Born Feb. 22, 1927 in Red Bay, Ala., daughter of the late Tom and Ethel Creekmore Dees Jackson, she was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

She married Hubert Pierce, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include six grandchildren, Marsha Faye Fisher, of Denton, Mo., Gina Renee Tash, of Lincoln, Maine, Allen DeLaine , Michael and Brian Pierce, all of Steele, and Brent Pierce, of Cardwell, Mo.; two sisters, Gladys Crocker and Dorothy Thorne and husband, Richard, all of Steele; six great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Olan Pierce; two sisters, Opal Miller and Vera Box; three brothers, Cleat, Bud and Lonnie Jackson and one half-brother, Jasper Jackson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 8 at the Bradshaw-Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Steele with the Rev. Jeremy Damesworth officiating.

Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion cemetery in Steele.

Estle Thomas

Estle Gray Thomas, 82, of Malden died Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at the Malden Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 1, 1920 in Pocahontas, Ark., son of the late Robert Lee and Birdie Bates Thomas, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in W.W.II. and a truck driver. He was a member of the Malden and Poplar Bluff American Legion, Malden VFW, Dexter Eagles and Dexter Elks.

Survivors include one daughter, Diana Thomas of Florida.

Visitation will be from noon til 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Allen officiating.

Burial with military rites will follow at the Rosewood cemetery in Malden.

Joyce Griffin

Joyce Adele Ezell Griffin, 65, of Potosi, Mo., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Washington County Memorial Hospital in Potosi.

Born Dec. 11, 1937, in St. Francis, Ark., daughter of the late John Delbert and Nellie June Kutchin Ezell, she was a retired beautician and member of the Potosi Church of God. She lived at Dudley, Mo. until moving to Potosi in 1973.

On June 9, 1956, in Bloomfield, Mo., she married Lowan Griffin who survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Roland Griffin of Charleston, Mo., William Griffin of Potosi, and Mark Griffin of Caledonia, Mo.; one daughter, Tijuanna "Tootsie" Sifford of Dexter, Mo., four brothers. William Ezell of Perry, Kan., Bob Ezell of Las Vegas, Nev., Teddy Ezell of Jacksonville, Ark., and Ray Ezell of Dexter; four sisters, Bonita Lewis of Maricopa, Calif., Doris Bosse of Bakersfield, Calif., Linda Beck of Holts Summit, Mo. and Shirley Smith of Sullivan, Mo.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jewel, Jerry Lynn and J.D. Ezell and one sister, Betty Smothers.

Visitation will be today, Sunday, Aug. 10, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel with Bro. Roger Taber officiating.

Burial will be in the Armstead-Dowdy cemetery near Dexter.

Zachary Smith

Zachary Allen Smith, infant, of Caruthersville, Mo., died August 6, 2003 at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Survivors include his parents, April Villegas and Anthony Smith, both of Caruthersville; grandparents, Tom and Becky Smith, and Maggie and Arturo Villegas III, all of Caruthersville; one aunt, April Smith of Caruthersville; and one uncle, Juan A. Villegas of Caruthersville.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 8, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti, Mo., with Rev. Dave Lewelling officiating.

Burial will be in the Maple cemetery in Caruthersville.

Chester Bridges

Chester Freddie Bridges, 84, of Malden, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at his residence.

Born September 25, 1918, in Buckhorn, Mo., son of the late Noah Benjamin and Pearlie Mae Westbrook Bridges, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII-South Pacific Campaign and was a member of the Spoonerville Baptist Church in Malden. He was a farmer for several years then worked at Federal Mogul in Malden.

On Aug. 16, 1941, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., he married Lela Mae Mabry, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include two sons, Wendell Bridges and wife, Norma, of Rogers, Ark. and Roger Bridges and wife, Linda Kay, of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Jean Bridges; four brothers, Wilie, Spencer, Lester "Doc" and Vernon Bridges and three sisters, Alpha Daves, Opal Redman and Elsie Woolard.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with the Revs. Richard Blagg and Darren Baker officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Park cemetery at Malden.

Patricia Duckworth

Patricia Ann "Notchie" Duckworth, 44, of Paterson, N.J., died Tuesday, Aug.5, 2003 at Mountainside Hospital in Paterson, N.J.

Born February 23, 1959 in Kennett, daughter of Marie Love and the late Elfield Hicks, she was a member of the Bethesda House of Mercy in Paterson. She was employed as a computer processor at First Wisconsin Bank in Milwaukee until her health failed in 1986. She attended Bethesda House of Mercy in Patterson. She married Jerry Lee Duckworth, Sr., who survives of the home.

Other survivors include six stepchildren, Jermila, Brittany, Trekeyla, Chris, Demetrius, and Jerry, Jr.; her mother, Marie Love, of Kennett; four sisters, Mary Love, Earlene Green, Minnie Love, all of Milwaukee, Wis., and Janice Cooper of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Isaiah Love and wife, Jackie, of Gosnell, Ark. and David Love and wife, Viola, of West Memphis, Ark. and her mother-in-law Willie Mae Duckworth, of Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Victory Temple COGIC in Kennett with Bishop B. A. Armour officiating.

Burial will be in the Oak Ridge cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers will be Justin Cooper, Anthony White, Isiaa Love, Jr., David Love II, Anthony Lemons, Adrian Lemonds, and Melvin Walker.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Isiaa and David Love and Willie and Robert Duckworth.

Virginia Harkey

Virginia Lee Harkey, 81, of Senath died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003 at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born March 8, 1922 in Senath, daughter of the late Jourd and Minnie Howard Hardin, she was a member of the Senath Church of Christ and she taught school at Caruth. She was the first resident of the Senath Nursing Home when it opened in October of 1968.

Survivors include one son, John David Harkey and wife, Cheryl, of Palmer, Ark.; and two sisters, Minnie Mae Matthews, of Imboden, Ark. and Hazel Lamberson of Kennett.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Price Hardin and two sisters, Georgia Merryman and Nell Hardin.

Funeral services were held today, Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Senath with C.O. Evans and Greg Pollock officiating.

Burial was in the Senath cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe, Donnie and David Hardin, Dan and Davis Matthews and Gary Renfrow.
