Dolah Gobble Lemonds
Lemonds, Dolah Gobble, March 15, 1912-August 28, 2003, died at age 91. Born near McGee, Mo. to Nelson E. Gobble and Edna McDaniel Gobble, Dolah was the oldest of our children. Her husband, Homer Lemonds, her parents, and her three brothers, Curtis, Alfred and Cletus, and one grandson, Michael Lemonds, all preceded her in death. She leaves behind three sons, C.E. Lemonds (Melba), Gerald (Lisa), and Ronald (Chris), and one daughter Pat Lemonds Sullivan (Jon Rey). She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Dolah learned early to work hard as her father had her helping gather eggs from underneath the dark corner of the house when she was only three. When she was ten, her father moved the family by covered wagon to Dunklin County. Later she worked by herself in the fields chopping cotton. During this time, she had to carry a water bucket for 1/2 mile.
At sixteen, she began to work at Kennett Shirt Factory, and she worked there until she married
Homer on July 5, 1929. They moved to St. Louis for a couple of months before returning to Homer's birthplace, a 32 acre farm northeast of Kennett in the Sumach community. She lived there for most of the next sixty-eight years while assisting her pastor husband in various churches in the area.
Dolah loved Jesus and wanted others to know Him, too, so that during most of her life, she helped women's and children's missions organizations in Southern Baptist churches where Homer was the pastor. She also taught Sunday School classes for many years.
During her life, Dolah worked a the Raspberry Store in Friendship, the Dunklin County Memorial Hospital and Mitchell's Drug Store. All of these jobs gave her a chance to interact with people. She made close friends in these jobs.
Her talents ran the gamut: she sewed tailored clothes, built kitchen cabinets, painted and wallpapered, put down carpeting, taught herself to play the piano at 62, and wrote several gospel songs.
She will always be remembered for her laugh and smile and her faithful Christian witness, and her prayers for family, friends and missionaries.
Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2003 at McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett. Funeral Service is at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 31, 2003, at Friendship Baptist Church northeast of Kennett.
