Rufus Curtis
Rufus Woodrow Curtis, 72, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at his residence.
Born Jan. 21, 1930, in Conran, Mo., son of the late Woodrow Wilson Curtis and Ruby Ellen Smith Ray, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Temple Baptist Church and owner of Jackson Termite Company in Caruthersville.
On Sept. 4, 1949, in Piggott, Ark., he married
June Schack, who survives of the home.
Survivors also include one son, Terry Curtis; one grand-daughter, Kelly Curtis; one brother, Earl Curtis; and one sister, Irene Hardy, all of Caruthersville.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Temple Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Harmon and Charles Kellar officiating.
Burial was in the Maple cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charles Blagg, David Phelps, Chris Storey, Bob Middleton II, Ken Chastain and Frank Linsman.
The H.S. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mabel Reeves
Mable Pauline Summers Reeves, 76, of Kennett, formerly of Malden, Mo., died Tuesday, March 12, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 13, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Kennett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. David McElwain officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oakridge cemetery at Kennett.
Rita Temple
Rita Mae Temple, 90, of Blytheville, Ark., formerly of Rives, Mo, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Blytheville. Born Oct. 5, 1911, in Gosnell, Ark., daughter of the late Bent and Minnie Moody Parmes, she was a member of the Rives Missionary Baptist Church in Rives and a farm wife.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Temple and a daughter, Alice Fay Nelson.
Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Temple Norrid, of Holland, Mo.; one son, Bob B. Temple, of Gosnell, Ark.; one sister, Julie Matthews, of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren, Steven Nelson, of Bruce, Miss, and Ricky Nelson, of Rives; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 13, at the Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Cobb Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Nell Vardell
Nell Vardell, 82, of Kennett, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Born Feb. 17, 1920, in San Francisco, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Mable Robertson Pickens.
On Feb. 28, 1946, she married
John Vardell, who survives of the home.
Survivors also include one son, Ernie Vardell, of Kennett; two daughters, Ginny Branum and husband, Milt, of Sullivan, Mo. and Hallie Vardell, of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren, Kerry Branum of Cabot, Ark. and Barry Branum, of Humboldt, Tenn. and five great grandchildren, Justin, Brittany, Emily, Abigail and Haley Brooke Branum.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 13, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett with the Rev. Don Slatton officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial Gardens cemetery at Kennett.
Pallbearers were Perry Gooch, John Donnelly, Mike Hunter, Bob Sturgeon, David Hine and Daryl Wilcoxson.
Honorary pallbearers was Carol Moore.
Willie Whitley, Sr.
Willie B. Whitley Sr., 60, of Hayti, Mo., died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at his residence.
Born Sept. 7, 1941, in Hughes, Ark., son he the late Mr. and Mrs. Lesse T. Whitley, he was a member of the Church of God in Christ in Hayti.
Survivors include his wife, Arlean Whitley, of Hayti; his children, Cicely, Willie B. Jr., Sylvester Whitley and Dominek Rhines all of Hayti, Kizzy Spain, Ricky and Bobby Joe Whitley, all of Columbia, Mo., Greg and Willie Jordan, both of Topeka, Kan., Jeffery Whitley, of Mexico, Mo., Erma Jean Whitley, of Jonesboro, Ark., Shirley Tankershly and Ralph Harris, both of Chicago, Ill. and Lloyd Harris, of Harrisburg, Pa.; his brothers and sisters, Roseata Beavers and Henry Lobley, both of Rock Island, Ill., Pearly Mae Lobley and Lidian Johnson, both of Elkart, Ind., Fred Lobley Jr., of Benton Harbor, Mich., Lorrain Lobely, of Chicago. Ill. and Roberta Lobley, of Rock Island and 20 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Church of God in Christ in Hayti with Elder Nathaniel Ellis officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery at Hayti.
Pallbearers were James Hale, Robert Lane, Ernest Campbell, John Lee Robinson, Joe Bob Jones and Kenneth and Runie Williams.
Honorary pallbearers were Willie B.. Whitley Jr., James Ham (Hill) Hale, James Spencer and Greg & Kenneth Williams.

Delores Callis
Delores Nail Callis, 71, of Richardson, Texas, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at the Baylor Richardson Medical Center in Richardson.
Born March 4, 1931, in Kennett, daughter of the late William Dixon and Harriet E. Owen Nail, she was a member of the Ely Baptist Church in Kennett and a school teacher.
On Oct. 2, 1954, she married
Mac Callis, who survives of the home. Survivors also include one son, Sean Callis, of Paragould, Ark.; one daughter, Heather Matzdorf, of Richardson; two grandsons, Jarod Anderson, of Kennett, and Seth Anderson, of Boys Ranch, Texas; three granddaughters, Holly, Kimberlea and Kelly Matzdorf, all of Richardson; one great granddaughter, Krystyn Anderson, of Kennett; one brother, Bill Nail, of Bolivar, Mo.; 5 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, March 14, at the Ely Baptist Church in Kennett with Rev. Don Slatton officiating.
Burial was in the Memorial Gardens cemetery in Kennett.

Kelly James
Kelly E. James, 34, of Holcomb, Mo., died Monday, March 11, 2002, at his residence.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, March 14, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett.
Burial will follow in the Memorial Gardens cemetery at Kennett.
Mattie Johnson
Mattie Lee Fritz Johnson, 84, of Tulsa, Okla., died Monday, March 11, 2002, at the St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
Born Feb. 7, 1918, in Senath, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Louis B. and Wirta McDaniel Motsinger.
On June 30, 1935, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she married
W.G. Fritz, who preceded her in death on May 12, 1959. On Jan. 1965, she married
Col. George W. Johnson, who preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1998. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Richard Carnes, and a brother, L.B. Motsinger, Jr.
Survivors include one son, Gordon Fritz and wife, Karon, of Tulsa; one daughter, Patricia Ann Carnes and husband, Don, of Merritt Island, Fla.; five grandchildren, Christi Phillips, Michael Carnes, Carolyn Roder, Greg Fritz and Diane Flannery ; 12 great-grandchildren and Col. Johnsons children, Mickey Brimer and Mary Chuckerel and grandchildren, Mickey, Tommy, Susan, Sharon, and Stacy.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, March 14, at the First Baptist Church in Senath with the Rev. Greg Fritz and Derek Combs officiating.
Burial was in the Senath cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joel Maxwell, Mark Dunivan, Robert Deck, Brad Branum and Jason Chandler and Freddie Chandler.

William Martee
William T. Martee, 63, of Kennett, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Holcomb, Mo.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, March 14, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, in the Oak Ridge cemetery at Kennett with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating.
Sylvia McCormick
Sylvia Loretta McCormick, 61, of St. Louis, Mo., died Monday, March 11, 2002, at the DeGreef Hospice House in St. Louis.
Born July 28, 1940, in Senath, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Freeman Samuel and Sylvia Marcilla Evans Launius. On June 28, 1958, in Senath, she married
Gene McCormick, who preceded her in death in 1995. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Mitchell and Bert Launius.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Harris and Shelia Kleiman, both of Fenton, Mo.; one brother, Leroy Launius, of Mississippi; four sisters, Della Stone, of Senath, Ella Grooms and Edna Franz, both of Flordia and Juanita Harrison, of Sikeston and four grandchildren, Sylvia McCormick, Douglas Harris, Sohnya and Kenny Kleiman III.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 13, in the Senath cemetery with Bill Ruby officiating.
Family members served as pallbearers.
McDaniel Funeral Home of Senath was in charge of arrangements.
John Morse
Dr. John P. Morse, 66, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Lima, Ohio.
Born July 24, 1935 in St. Joseph, Mo. son of Dr. Marvin Morse and Mildred Morse, he was the grandson of Dr. O.J. Carder, founder of the Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Claire Morse.
Survivors include his current wife, Susan Morse of Lima, Ohio, and his daughter Nancy Morse of Springfield, Mo.
He was a graduate of the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, La. and was a Vietnam veteran.
Dr. Morse practiced medicine as an orthopedic surgeon in St. Joseph, until 1990. He moved to Kennett, where he continued his practice until his retirement in 1997.
