Cletus Hurtman

Cletus Hurtman, 81, of Campbell, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott, Ark.

Born May 10, 1920, in White Oak, Mo., son of the late John and Mary Stafford Hurtman, he worked at John's Produce, Gideon Anderson and the cotton gin and also attended the Campbell Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include two cousins, Mildred Payne and Roberta Darter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay and Elmer T. Hurtman and one sister, Aileen Burnham.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, at the Woodlawn cemetery in Campbell with the Rev. Larkin Enlow officiating.

William Johnson

William (Bill) Johnson, 63, of Hayti, Mo., formerly of Braggadocio, Mo., died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the nursing home in Hayti.

Born Sept. 30, 1938, in Eads, Tenn., son of the late LeRoy and Francis Warren Johnson, he was a farmer.

Survivors include two daughters, Chrystal Thaxton, of Blytheville, Ark. and Becky Leasure, of Caruthersville, Mo.; two sons, Brian Johnson, of Manila, Ark. and Timothy Johnson, of Springfield, Mo.; three sisters, Margarett Scroggins, of Burdett, Ark. and Charlotte Gudehus and Edna Wiseman, both of Steele, Mo.; two brothers, Johnny Johnson, of Memphis, Tenn. and Barney Johnson, of Gosnell, Ark.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Johnson; two children, Jason Cline and Billy Joyce Johnson; one sister, Virginia McLemore and one brother, Richard Johnson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti with Evangelist Sam Martin III officiating.

Burial was in the Mt Zion cemetery at Steele.

Pallbearers were Shane Wiseman, Johnathan Frazier, David Cameron, Mike Tomlinson and Chad Thaxton.

Roy McCain

Roy Dee McCain, 77, of Campbell, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Three Rivers Hospital-North Campus in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Born Oct. 19, 1924, son of the late Elige and Belva McCain, he was a farmer, served as treasurer of the Valley Ridge Water District and was an active member of the Malden Church of Christ.

He married Maudena McCain, who preceded him in death and later married Lois James, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include two daughters, Peggy Crafton, of Malakoff, Texas and Rebecca Stone, of Searcy, Ark.; one son, Russell McCain, of Kennett; two step-sons, Dennis James, of Jackson, Tenn. and Kelly James, of Kennett; one brother, T.E. McCain, ; three sisters, Gladys Varner, of Piggott, Ark., Genevieve Myers, of Kennett and Mable Randall, of Rector, Ark.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Birmingham.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the McDaniel Funeral Home of Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with David McElwain officiating.

Burial will follow at the Memorial Gardens cemetery in Kennett.

Gene Murphy

Gene Murphy, 58, of Gideon, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Blagg officiating.

Burial will follow at the Stanfield cemetery in Clarkton, Mo.

Esther Pritchard

Esther G. Pritchard, 84, of Holcomb, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her residence.

Born Jan. 10, 1917, in Wayne County, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Thresia King Smith.

On June 5, 1937, she married J.W. Pritchard, who preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1978. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Nelson and Doyle Smith and one sister, Ruby Piercefield.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Fisher, of Kennett and Nora Johnson, of Holcomb; four grandchildren, James A. Beard, Lori Anne Ridge, Jeffery Andrew Johnson and Jennifer Fisher Keene; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Andrew, Lauren Rae and Annie Jean Ridge, Bailey Kathryn Johnson and Alison Kathaleen Beard and three sisters, Blanche Hay, of St. Louis, Mo., Vera Jennings, of Rockford, Ill. and Frances McGavock, of Doniphan, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. J.C. Joyner and Gary Mayes officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Gardens cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers were John and Sam Fisher, Jimmy Johnson, John Keene, Erwin Ridge and James A. Beard.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Caring Ministry.

Pansy Reese

Pansy "Pat" Rubel Reese, 76, of Malden, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with the Landess Funeral Home of Malden.

Brenda Smith Brenda Sue Smith, 57, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Senath, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Southcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Okla.

Born Dec. 13, 1944, in Senath, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Inez Smith.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Sue Smith, of Mountain Home; one son, Ronald Austin, of Senath; one sister, Debbie Crader, of Kennett and three brothers, Denny Smith, of Arbyrd, Mo., Terry Smith, of South Haven, Mich. and Wayne Smith, of Bangor, Mich.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Providence Baptist Church in Kennett with the Rev. Kevin Sullivan officiating.

Burial was in the Senath cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Boatner, Lee Meredith, George Jameson, Chester Rebstock and Chuck and Cody Adams.

McDaniel Funeral Home of Senath was in charge of arrangements.

Jimmie Taylor

Jimmie Sue Taylor, 59, of Holcomb, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at National HealthCare in Kennett.

Born Nov. 25, 1942, in Holcomb, she was the daughter of the late James Elmer and Minnie Zelma Starr Crayne.

Survivors include four daughters, Deborah Wheeler, of Kennett, Saundra Campbell and Theresa Taylor, both of Holcomb and Patricia Blakemore, of Campbell, Mo.; one brother, James Crayne, of Malden, Mo.; six sisters, Jerrie Burrow, Mattie Arnold and Shirley Hensley, all of Holcomb and Aline Nice, Bertha Gilpin and Helen Woodall, all of St. Louis and nine gandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean Hershenberger, Ethel Wheeling and Pauline Westmorlan.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Bartholomew officiating.

Burial will follow at the Stanfield cemetery in Clarkton, Mo.

Pallbearers are Roger Wheeler, Kevin Blakemore, Alan Campbell, Tyler Fincher, Jessie Brown and Austin Campbell.

Adlean Bristow

Adlean Beatrice Bristow, 76, of Malden, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Born March 18, 1925, in Blytheville, Ark., daughter of the late Artie Berry and Rosie Ellen White Gray, she was of the General Baptist Faith.

On July 9, 1945, in Holly Springs, Miss., she married John W. "Bill" Bristow, who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1986. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Ellsworth, Rachel Gentry and Naomi Grey and one brother, Jack Dempsey Gray.

Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Bristow, of Bernie, Mo. and Bobby Bristow, of Malden; one daughter, Karen Lacewell, of Jackson, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Johnna Barnes, Stephanie and Courtney Bristow, Megan Campbell and Jeremy Lacewell, all of Malden, Brant Bristow, of Parma, Mo., Brandon Bristow, of Bernie and Kari Lacewell, of Jackson and three great-grandchildren, Alexis Campbell and Devin Barnes, both of Malden and Gavin Bristow, of Parma.

Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Miller officiating.

Burial will follow at the Memorial Park cemetery in Malden. Norman Counts

Norman Counts, 69, of Malden, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Born April 22, 1932, in Success, Ark., son of the late William Riley and Effie Mae Hart Counts, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War, a radio/television repairman and of the Baptist faith.

In 1953, he married Lucy Mae Pulliam, who preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 1986. He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, Willie, Sylvan, Floyd, Emery, Lilly, Clayton (Howard) and Jack and one brother and one sister who died in infancy.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Smith, of Doniphan, Mo.; four sons, Tom Counts, of Caruthersville, Mo., John Counts, of Fenton, Mo., Paul Counts, of Bragg City, Mo. and James Counts, of Campbell, Mo.; one brother, Leamon Counts, of St. Ann, Mo.; one sister, Flossie Schneider, of Campbell; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at the Mt. Gilead cemetery in Clarkton.

Iva Culbertson

Iva Jean Culbertson, 78, of Kennett, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Three Rivers HealthCare-North Campus in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Born Nov. 29, 1923, in Wooster, Ark., daughter of the late H.A. and Gladys Lea, she attended the Slicer Street Church of Christ and worked at Ely Walker Shirt Factory until closing of the factory.

She married Macon Culbertson, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include one son, Jerry Culbertson and wife, Kathy, of Gainesville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Joshua Culbertson and wife, Jennifer, of Birmingham, Ala. and Sarah Culbertson, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one brother, Dewitt Lea, of Louisiana and one sister, Tressie Avra, of Vilonia, Ark.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 27, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Culbertson and Spencer Furby officiating.

Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers were Larry McDowell, Ron McNew, Joe Slicer, Jeff Bridges, Keith Jones and Alvin Haywood.

Honorary pallbearers were J.R. Little, Jesse James, Mike Clevenger, Frank Farless, Frank Stuart, Charles Archer, Bob Holder, Leonard Boggs, Russ Burcham, Henry Deeter, Larry Metheny, Gaylon Mullins, Dennis Robertson, James Brice, Britt Burcham, Tim Caldwell, Gerald Caraway, Floyd Coffer, Rick Gore, Scott Miskelly, David Smith, Tracy Smith and Don Ward.
