Shirley Hearn
Shirley Roe Hearn, 65, of Paragould, Ark., formerly of Arbyrd, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002 at the Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould.
Born Aug. 14, 1936, in Hollywood, Mo., she was the daughter of the late F.E. and Lillie Grubbs Young.
She married
J.B. Roe, who preceded her in death and later married
John Hearn, who also preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Cova Young.
Survivors include one son, Jason Henderson and wife, Tammy, of Caruth, Mo.; one daughter, Lillie Roe, of Arbyrd; three sisters, Dorothy Meredith, of Illinois, Kitty Southland, of Michigan and Mattie Meredith, of Paragould; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 3, at the First United Pentecostal Church in Arbyrd with the Rev. Vernon Purser officiating.
Burial was in the Lulu cemetery.
Pallbearers were Neal Smith, Kenneth Sikes, Weldon Huggins, Shane Bougart, Ricky Roe and Mike Bell.
McDaniel Funeral Home of Senath, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude Baskin
Gertrude Baskin, 87, of Campbell, Mo., died today, Friday, Jan 4. 2002, at the Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott, Ark.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete with the Landess Funeral Home of Campbell.
Loy Petty
Loy Petty, 69, of Flint, Mich., formerly of Arbyrd, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Flint.
Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Arbyrd.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at the Lulu cemetery in Senath, Mo.
Melba Staggs
Melba Gene Staggs, 73, of Kennett, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the Heritage Nursing Center in Kennett.
Born July 19, 1928, in Holland, Mo., daughter of the late J.T. and Frances Scott Hicks, she was an assembly line worker and attended the Rives Missionary Baptist Church in Rives, Mo.
She married
Marvin Staggs, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Lonnie Marvin Staggs, of Kennett; one daughter, Melba Sue Johannes, of Wautoma, Wis.; one sister, Bessie Bain, of Portageville, Mo.; four grandchildren, Shannon Gene Johnson, of Manila, Ark., Richie Marvin Staggs, of Memphis, Tenn., Bobby Jason Crouch, of Wautoma and Joseph Marvin Staggs, of Kennett and three great-grandchildren, Oran Robert Johnson, of Manila and Brittnay and Joshua Staggs, both of Memphis.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 4, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Steele, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Skaggs officiating.
Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion cemetery in Steele.
Orvel Ward
Orvel Buford Ward, 81, of Rector, Ark., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the V.A. Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Corning, Ark., son of the late Benjamin and Edna Ward, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII, a truck driver and he attended the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Genetta Ward, of Rector; one son, Gary Ward, of Jonesboro, Ark; four grandchildren, Steve Ward, of Rector, Kristina Ward and Jason Morris, both of Memphis and Brandi McFadden, of Paragould; two great-grandchildren, Shelby Ward, of Rector and Caiden McFadden, of Paragould.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Ward; two brothers, Dois W. and Alfred Ward and three sisters, Sylvia and Gladys Ward and Hazel Simpson.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, Jan, 4, at the Woodland Heights cemetery in Rector with the Rev. James Henry Dortch officiating.
Mitchell Funeral Home of Rector was in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude Baskin
Gertrude Baskin, 87, of Campbell, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Piggott Community Hospital in Piggott, Ark.
Born Jan. 9, 1914, at Bradford, Tenn., daughter of the late Scobie and Myrtle Lou Bannister, she was a homemaker and member of the Campbell General Baptist Church.
She married
Lee G. Gaskin who preceded her in death on March 20, 1970. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Bannister and a sister, Ruth Smith.
Survivors include a daughter, Samantha Beyer and husband, Leo, of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, Charles D. Fernstrom and wife, Charlee, of Pace, Fla; a sister, Freida Sue Smith of Memphis; five grandchildren, Renee Knight, Janet George, Charles Beyer, Ray Beyer and Tim Beyer; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and several neices and nephews.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Jan. 6, in the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Campbell with Pastor Earl D. Dell officiating.
Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery at Campbell.
Jessie Bridges, Sr.
Jessie Raymond Bridges, Sr., 89, of Kennett, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home.
Born Jan. 29, 1912m at Pascola, Mo., son of the late John and Minnie Edwards Bridges, he was a member of the Harrison Street Church of Christ in Kennett.
On Nov. 17, 1928, he married
Edith Opal Watson who preceded him in death Jan. 2, 1987. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Eugene Bridges; a daughter, Katherine Akers, two brothers, Cecil and Melvin Bridges, a step-mother, Bessie Bridges and a step-brother, Charles Gattis.
Survivors include three sons, Johnny Bridges of St. Louis, Tracy Bridges of Kennett and Jessie Bridges, Jr., of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Betty Decker and Mavis Higgins of Kennett and Alice Marks of Arnold, Mo., a brother, Marion Bridges of Niles, Mich.; two step-brothers, James Gattis of Cullman, Ala. and Hershal Gattis of Kennett; two sisters Minnie Maude Garrett of Michigan and Rita Bridges of St. Louis; a step-sister, Lorene Shipman of Kennett; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Eselle Long of Kennett.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Jan. 6, in the McDaniel Funeral Service Chapel in Kennett with Dwight Harrison officiating.
Burial will be in the Memorial Gardens cemetery in Kennett.
Pallbearers will be Jeff, Ronnie, Jerry and Randy Bridges, Jimmy Don Higgins and Michael Decker.
Lula Hastings
Lula Mae Hastings, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems in Hayti, Mo.
Born Sept. 4, 1914, in Bells, Tenn., daughter of the late William "Bill" and Mary Elizabeth Wilkerson Thomason, she attend school in Tennessee and was a clerk in a hardware business in Portageville before retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portageville and later the First Assembly of God Church in Portageville.
Survivors include a brother, Max Thomason of Braggadocio, Mo., a sister, Josephine Gordon of Flint, Mich. and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Poole officiating.
Burial was in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gene Tarplay, Harold Smith, Dave Jean, Joe Elrode, Bill Ward and Norvil W. Ward.
John Maguire
John Thomas Maguire, 88, of Cherokee Village, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home.

John Crawford
John J. Crawford, 63, of Arbyrd, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at his residence.
Born March 6, 1938, in Cardwell, son of the late John Henry and Sadie Ella Cato Crawford, he was a farmer.
On Nov. 23, 1955, he married
Susie Kackley, who survives of the home.
Survivors also include one son, Johnny Crawford, of Arbyrd; two daughters, Margaret Wright, of Black Oak, Ark. and Tabitha Crawford, of Arbyrd; one brother, Marvin Crawford, of Blytheville, Ark.; six sisters, Violet Moore, of Kennett, Imogene Kackley, Nancy Scott and Dora Crawford, all of Rives, Mo., Helen Crawford, of Hornersville, Mo. and Olene Crawford, of Gosnell, ark.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild and three brothers, Bill, Raymond and Joe Crawford.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett with Revs. Doug Clinton and Charles James officiating.
Burial was in the Horner cemetery at Hornersville.
Pallbearers were Johnny and Randy Crawford, Carl Burns, Bobby Abbott, Tim Harris and Billy Joe Medley.

Otis Crawford, 88, of Gideon, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

eatrice Hooper
Veatrice Hooper, 78, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Caruthersville Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 13, 1923, in Caruthersville, daughter of the late Robert Hughie and Mayme Pinnon Stubbs, she was a secretary with the Caruthersville School District #18 prior to her retirement.
On Sept. 5, 1942, in Kennett, she married
H.R. Hooper, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1974. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Kerry McClendon; two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Lawrence, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four grandsons, Mark and Casey McClendon and Skip and Matthew Lawrence; one sister, Irene Dunehew, of Caruthersville and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Caruthersville with Dr. James Adams officiating.
Burial was in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens cemetery.
