Came to Livingston County in 1865
Became Ill Last Week
Mrs. Ada L. Girdner, who observed her 96th birthday Sunday of last week, died at 10:10 o'clock this morning at the Chillicothe hospital. She had lived in Livingston County since 1865 and at 1311 Polk street in Chillicothe since 1907.
She had been ill since suffering a stroke last Thursday. She was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon.
The body was taken to the Gordon Home for Funerals. Services probably will be Friday, with burial at Edgewood cemetery.
Even in her advanced years, Mrs. Girdner did most of her own housework. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and reading the paper as long as she could.
She was born Ada L. Potter, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Potter, on Aug. 12, 1860, near Danville, Ill. She was 4 years old when she came with her parents to Missouri, and often recalled the trip here. As the family went through Danville enroute to the train, the church bells were ringing and her father told her President Lincoln had been assassinated. The family made the trip by train to Quincy, Ill., and she remembered crossing the Mississippi River by ferry boat to resume the train journey on this side of the river. Livestock was herded below decks and passengers traveled on the upper deck.
The family settled in east of Springhill, Jackson township, in what now is known as the Potter community. Mrs. Girdner attended the first Potter school. She was married in Jackson township July 31, 1881, to Michael P. Girdner. The Rev. James Mack performed the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Girdner farmed until they moved to Chillcothe in 1907. Mr. Girdner died July 28, 1935.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Elias Bible Class for many years. Mrs. Girdner was remembered on her birthday this month by the Christian church family, which sent her a large bouquet of gladioli.
Mr. and Mrs. Girdner were the parents of two children. The son, Fred K. Girdner, lives at White Salem, Wash. The daughter, Mrs. Cora Griffith, Glendale, Ariz., died in 1932. There are two grandsons, Roger W. Griffith, Balboa Heights, Panama Canal Zone, and J. Ralph Griffith of Phoenex, Ariz., who has been here with his family. There are five great-grandchildren, Hazel and Roger Jr., children of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Griffith, and Jimmie, Marian, and Patrice Griffith, children of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ralph Griffith.
