Graveside services for Bernice Hazel Johnson Piland of Modesto, Calif., were held Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at the Burwood Cemetery in Escalon, Calif., under the direction of the McHenry Chapel of Franklin & Downs in Modesto. Mrs. Piland, 86, died Oct. 3, 2002, at her home in Modesto. Born Aug. 14, 1916, she was a native of Thornfield. She lived in Modesto for 46 years and was a seamstress for J.C. Penney for 20 years where she supervised custom draperies and also did interior decorating. She was a member of the Shelter Cove Community Church, where she was active in missionary work. She volunteered with Medical Ambassadors International. Survivors include her husband, Clyde R. Piland Sr. of Modesto; five children, R. Loretta Martindale of Modesto, T. Izetta Mello, Gresham, Ore., Clyde R. Piland Jr. of Elk Grove, Calif., Mary Jo Steed of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Leo R. Piland, Gila Bend, Ariz.; two brothers, Eugene Johnson of Cedar Gap and Armen Johnson of Shenandoah, Iowa; a sister, Ethel Duckworth of Seymour; 12 grand-children and 35 great-grandchild-ren. Basil Ray Garland, 65
Funeral services for Basil Ray Garland of Seymour were held Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with burial set at the Dogwood Cemetery southwest of Seymour, under the direction of the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Mr. Garland, 65, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at St. John's Re-gional Health Center, Springfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had retired from Dayco Products Inc. in Springfield after 35 years of employment. A 1955 graduate of Ava High School where he was an outstanding football player, he attended the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Dogwood as a young man. Among his hobbies was hunting, and he owned two coyote pens at Dogwood that were enjoyed by many friends. He also was a past president of the Local Steelworkers Union No. 662 in Springfield. Preceding him in death was an infant son, Keith Ray Garland. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Garland, Ozark; his mother, Veda Garland, Republic; his father, Keith Garland, Springfield; two daughters, Cecilia Garland and Melinda Roller, both of Ozark; one stepdaughter, JaDonna Rice and husband Wayne, Ozark; four sisters, Joleen King and husband John of Republic, Gwen Coil and husband Charles of Rochelle, Ill., Patricia Garland, Springfield, and Gaytha Garland of Republic; one special cousin, L.D. Garland and wife Joella, Hartville; three granddaughters, Dandy Robinson, Candy Roller and Tonya Apple-gate; one grandson, Jeremy Apple-gate; three great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Neta Gray of Seymour.

Mr. Davis, 73, died April 3, 2003, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Seymour.

Lovetta I. Morris, 72
Funeral services for former Seymour resident Lovetta Irene Morris of Springfield were held Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in the Holman-Howe Chapel, Seymour, with Dr. John Marshall officiating. Bur-ial followed in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery, under direction of the funeral home. Mrs. Morris, 72, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, in Christian Healthcare of Nixa. She was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Seymour to the Rev. Alva Andrew and Annie Pearl Hamilton Morris. Born and raised in the Seymour community, she was a graduate of Seymour High School. She made her home in Wichita, Kan., for several years before moving to Springfield in 1968. Besides being a devoted homemaker, she also worked as a telephone operator and retired from Southwestern Bell. She had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Springfield. She belonged to the "Choice Makers" Sunday-school class and was a former member of the church choir. Mrs. Morris also dearly loved children, enjoyed giving them gifts, and she was especially dear to her nieces. She also loved animals, particularly cats. Preceding her in death were her father; an infant brother, Robert Morris; and a nephew, Gregory Silvey. Survivors include her mother, Pearl Morris of Springfield; a sister, Lois Inman and husband Frank of Nixa; two nieces, Gaytha Suits and husband David of Willard and Jana Hesselton and husband Garey of Chester County, Penn. Lula Detta Tedder, 93
Graveside services for Lula Detta Tedder of Seymour were held Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the Fordland Cemetery with Chaplain Charley Shurtz officiating. Burial followed in the cemetery under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour. Mrs. Tedder, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour. She was born Aug. 16, 1909, in Kingman, Kan., to Edward and Nellie Withers Patrick. Born and raised in Kansas, she was married to Grady Allen Tedder on Sept. 3, 1933, and they moved to Borger, Texas, in 1937. The couple raised two daughters, and while making her home in Borger, she was employed by the Borger Country Club and also as a house companion/nanny for several families with children. In 1995, she moved to Seymour to be near her daughter. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and had created many lovely items throughout the years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Grady, in October 1986; six brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Mitchell and husband James, Seymour, and Juanita Oli-ver, Placerville, Calif.; five grand-children, Steve Dowell of Borger, Texas, Rebecca Brown of Austin, Ark., Cindy Craig, Fordland, Gary Oliver of Sacramento, Calif., and Carolyn Wylie of Placerville; and eight great-grandchildren. Lester V. Jenkins, 88
Funeral services for Lester Vernon Jenkins of Seymour were held Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Seymour with the Rev. Gerald Allmon and the Rev. Jerry VonAllmen officiating. Burial followed in the Mount Tabor Cemetery near Ava. Mr. Jenkins, 88, died on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour. He was born Sept. 14, 1914, near Good Hope to A.C. and Myrtle Lethco Jenkins. Born and raised in the Good Hope community near Ava, on Dec. 25, 1938, he was united in marriage to Reta "Pauline" Rich-ards, and to this union, one daughter was born. After he and Pauline were married, they made their home in the same area until moving to Seymour in 1996. He had served as a deputy sheriff in Douglas County and also had driven a bus for the Ava School District for several years. Mr. Jenkins made his profession of faith in Christ and followed the Pentecostal faith throughout his life. He also enjoyed country music and had performed in a group for several years. He enjoyed being outdoors where one of his favorite activities was hunting. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Thetis and Albert Jenkins. Survivors include his loving wife of almost 64 years, Pauline, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Sue and Jim Wetherton of Lenexa, Kan.; a granddaughter, DeRecia Wade and husband Eric of Olathe, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Jimmy Burt, Jordan and Josh Wade, all of Olathe; a foster daughter, Mary Lou Hendricks and husband Robert of Fairview, Okla.; a foster son, Finis "Skip" Berry of Ava; four foster grandsons, Curtis, Gary, Jacky and Robert Hendricks; and a sister, Viola Dacy and husband Don of Fair Play. Gorden "Shorty" Heckendorn officiating. Burial will follow in the Seymour Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. DeArmond, 88, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour. She was born July 5, 1914, near Seymour to William J. and Mary Fleetwood Cummins. A lifelong resident of the Seymour area, on Oct. 2, 1931, she was united in marriage to Chester A. DeArmond, and to this union, two sons were born. She was a homemaker and a charter member of the Lone Star Freewill Baptist Church, located just east of Seymour. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Chester, in 1994; an infant son, Charles; four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include a son and his wife, Frank and Anita DeArmond of Seymour; three grandchildren, Judy Street and husband Ron, Karen Crump and Tammy Wright and husband Steven, all of Seymour; five great-grandchildren, Michelle Everhart, Michael Street, Amanda Wright, Dusty Claxton and Kallun Wright, all of Seymour; five great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Tanner Carmichael, Austin and Alex Everhart and Jade Wright; a brother, Earl Cummins of Fordland; and two sisters, Pearl Regan of Pittsburg, Kan., and Hazel Bryant of Cottonwood, Ariz.

Henry E.D. Woodruff, 63
Henry Eugene Dale Woodruff of Rogersville died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, with funeral arran-gements handled by the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home, Rogersville. Mr. Woodruff, 63, was born Dec. 21, 1939, in Mountain Grove to Edgar and Opal Woodruff. A lifelong area resident, he proudly served in the U.S. Army and was employed as a groundskeeper at Twin Oaks, a carpenter and "jack-of-all-trades." He enjoyed camping, dancing, fishing, hunting and working in his spare time. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Charlene Woodruff; a half-brother, Martin Parmenter; and a grandson, Josepa Esteban. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Deckard of Sparta; two daughters, Patricia Woodruff of Springfield and Jenny Sue "Sissy" Applegate and husband Alvin of Fordland; two sons, Bobby Joe Woodruff of Rogersville and Edgar Eugene Woodruff and wife Donnell, also of Rogersville; 13 grand-children; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred Woodruff of Strafford and Lawrence Woodruff and wife Linda of Springfield; and five sisters, Pauline Wilson of Springfield, Lois Creason and husband Pete of Rogersville, Bertha Roberta Oxenreider of Pleasant Hope, Wanda Craig, Springfield, and Julia Ann Smith and husband Ted of Rogersville.

Mary Florene 'Granny' Cummins, 78
Graveside services for Mary Florene "Granny" Cummins, Rogersville, are set for 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), Dec. 10, 2003, at the Palmetto Cemetery, Rogersville. Mrs. Cummins, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the Cox Medical Center South in Springfield. A lifelong resident of Rogersville where she raised her children, she became very ill three years ago with a lung disease and went to live with her daughter Bonny and her husband, David, in Willard. She was a longtime member of the Rogersville Church of Christ, where she enjoyed Christian fellowship with good friends and shared her belief in our Lord with her children and grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Herbert and Ruth Miller Hostetler; her husband, John William Cummins; and a brother, Clyde Hostetler. Survivors include a son, Lloyd "Wayne" Cummins and wife Pamela of Marshfield; two daughters, Patsy Ann McFarland of Rogersville and Bonny Sue Dean and husband J. Alma Beatrice Lowder, 49
Funeral services for Alma Beatrice Lowder of Seymour were held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in the Holman-Howe Chapel, Seymour, with the Rev. Mitchell Wright officiating. Burial followed in the Timber Ridge Cemetery, located northwest of Marshfield. Mrs. Lowder, 49, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in her home. She was born March 11, 1954, in Marshfield to Hershel Dwane and Cordely Geneva Napier Johnson. Born and raised in the Seymour community and a graduate of Seymour High School, she then made her home in Wright County and the Elkland area before returning to Seymour in 1981. In 1972, she was united in marriage to Terry Leon Lowder, and together they shared 10 years before his passing in 1982. Besides being a devoted homemaker, Mrs. Lowder also was employed by the H.D. Lee Co. in Seymour for several years. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and had attended the Methodist church. She loved her family dearly and especially enjoyed her nieces and nephews. In her spare time, she liked watching television. Preceding her in death were her father; a son, Bradley Eric Lowder; and a brother, Robert Dwane Johnson. Survivors include her mother, Geneva Johnson, Seymour; three brothers, George Johnson, Roger Johnson and wife Rhonda, Junior Johnson and wife Tish, all of Seymour; a sister, Janice Hummel and husband Gus of Seymour; four nieces, Linda Davis and husband James, Brenda Jones and husband David, Courtney and Catie Johnson, all of Seymour; and four nephews, Dale Galbraith and wife Tammy, Dallas, Nikita and Colt Johnson, all of Seymour.

Hazel Melvina Francesconi, 89
Graveside services for Hazel Melvina Francesconi of Rogersville were held Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Panther Valley Cemetery in rural Fordland, under the direction of the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home of Rogersville. Mrs. Francesconi, 89, died at 7:38 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. She was born Feb. 18, 1914, in Rogersville to James H. and Aman-da Belle Adams Wilkerson. On Dec. 20, 1935, she was married to John Francesconi Jr., who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1977. She was a member of the Wilkerson Methodist Chapel and a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Also preceding her in death were her parents; seven brothers, Williams, John, Jess, Clarence, Clifford, Jamie and Hubert; and four sisters, Florence Williams, Faye Elkins, Irene Evans and Jewell Roberts Johnson. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Kay Karr of Naples, Fla., and Rosalie Hobson and husband Ted D. Sr. of Springfield; and a grandson, Ted D. Hobson Jr. of Rogersville. Larry Joe Welsh, 56
Funeral services for Larry Joe Welsh of Rogersville were held Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home in Rogersville with burial following in the Union Chapel Cemetery, south of Fordland. Mr. Welsh, 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, north of Springfield. He was born April 9, 1947, in Springfield to Elmer and Ruth Car-ter Welsh. A 1965 graduate of Willard High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Elite Logistics for Associated Wholesale Grocers, and he was a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 245. On March 2, 1987, he was married to Bonita Jo Green, who survives of the home. Other survivors include his mother, Ruth Ann Welsh, Springfield; a son, Ralf Welsh; a stepson, Keith Williams of Rogersville; a daughter, Michelle Welsh, Springfield; a stepdaughter, Lisa Bremer of Ozark; and five stepgrandchildren, Justin, Dillon and Jacob Williams, Jennifer Bremer and Seth Markle.

Graveside services for Lenna Jean Simmons of Seymour were held Saturday, April 19, 2003, at the Nancy Newton Cemetery north of Mansfield with the Rev. Melvin Napier officiating. Funeral services were under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour. Mrs. Simmons, 90, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour. She was born July 10, 1912, near Mansfield to Arthur and Ruth Mackey Ross. A lifelong resident of the Mansfield and Seymour areas, in 1936, she was married to Otto Kenneth Simmons, and to this union, two sons were born. Throughout the years, she was a devoted and hard-working homemaker as she and Otto lovingly raised their family. She had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Antioch Southern Church of Christ northeast of Seymour. In her spare time, she enjoyed doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles and also working in her garden. Her family was very important to her, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Otto, on Aug. 13, 1976; a son, Freddie Simmons; three brothers, Gordon, Howard and Charles Ross; and three sisters, Elsie Young, Goldie Werle and Hazel Ross. Survivors include a son and a daughter-in-law, Edward and Valerie Simmons, Preston; five grandchildren, Lenna Glenn, Rose Simmons, Betty Lou Wheatley, Amy Phelps and Gwendolyn Simmons; five great-grandchildren, Edward, Melissa, Rodney, Jacqueline and Misty; and a sister, Velma Keech and husband Joe of Harrah, Okla.
