John Thomas Gascich, Sr., 86, of Lee’s Summit died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa, Kan.
No services are planned, per his request.
His remains are to be placed with his sons at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Mr. Gascich was born Nov. 2, 1913, in the Kansas City area.
He married his wonderful wife, Victorine Connally, on Nov. 20, 1937.
He worked for Continental Grain Co. for 43 years and retired in 1974
He was an avid golfer and master gardner.
He was preceded in death by his sons, John Gascich, Jr., and Steven V. Gascich; and a daughter, Joan M. Reed.
He is survived by his wife, Victorine; a daughter, Mary Pat Sesso; nine grandchildren, John T. Gascich III, Kevin S. Gascich, Melissa M. Severson, Jennifer J. Fields, Patricia M. Reed, James W. Reed Jr., Stephanie M. Newberry; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Stella Morau; and two brothers, Joseph Gascich and Charles Gascich.

R. ARVIL MAGGARD
R. Arvil Maggard, 77, of Holden, Mo., passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Lee’s Summit Hospital.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Lone Jack Baptist Church.
Friends may call 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church, or to the American Heart Association.
Maggard was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Taney County, Mo.
He was a veteran of the Marine Corps, serving in World War II.
He was the owner of Maggard Television Sales and Service, where he worked 45 years.
He was a member of the Lone Jack Baptist Church, the American Amateur Radio Lodge and the Lone Jack Civic Club.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maxine Maggard; five children, Jeanett Hunziker, Darrel Maggard, James Saunders, Edward Saunders and Susan Launius; seven grandchildren; a sister; two brothers; as well as many nieces and nephews.

HERBERT H. BLY
Herbert H. Bly, 82, of Lee’s Summit died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at John Knox Village Care Center.
Mr. Bly was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Ottawa, Kan.
He was married to Shirley Bly for 52 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Bly; a daughter, Margo Ransom; a son, Jimmy Bly; his second son, William Bly; his second daughter, Barbara Davis; three grandsons, Jeffrey Bly, Timothy Bly and Brian Bly; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Bly; a great-granddaughter, Rachel Bly; and a great-grandson, Kyle Bly.

MARION CARL BATSON
Marion Carl Batson, 89, of Spring Hill, Kan, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at Beverly Nursing Home. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Sheil Colonial Funeral Chapel, with burial in Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
Friends called from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug, 20, at the chapel.
Memorial contributions may be given to Olathe General Baptist Women’s Mission Society, or the Diabetic Foundation.
Marion was born April 24, 1911, in Bois D’Arc, Mo., near Springfield, Mo., and lived in Independence for more than 50 years.
He moved to the nursing home in March 1999, to be closer to his wife, daughters and family.
He worked for Corn Productions, Co., North Kansas City, Mo., until his retirement in 1975.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Duane Batson; a grandson, Robert Michael Batson; and a granddaughter, Julie Renee Kontoulas.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Leone Margrete Batson, Spring Hill; two daughters, Iva McCullough, Olathe, Kan., and Mary Kontoulas, Spring Hill; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ray and Stanley Batson, Raytown, Mo., and Denzil Batson, Republic, Mo.; a sister, Pauline Robertson, Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
BONITA RAE CAWTHON
Bonita Rae Cawthon, 77, of Independence passed away Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at home.
Services were 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Park Lawn Chapel, with burial in Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence.
Friends called from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the chapel.
The family suggests contributions to Carondelet Health or Cancer Action.
Bonita was born June 7, 1923, in Independence, Kan., and lived in this area since 1945.
She was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple.
She owned Cawthon Floor Covering with her husband, Orville “Bob” Cawthon.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and three daughters, Amy, Elaine and Frances.
She is survived by four daughters, Donna Smith, North Kansas City, Mo., Bonnie Boniedot, Independence, Cynthia Pummill, Lee’s Summit, and Melinda Wolf, Kansas City, Mo.; four sons, Robert Cawthon, Cleveland, Ohio, Kenneth Cawthon, Kansas City, James Cawthon, Columbia, Mo., and John Cawthon, Independence; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM “BILL” EDWARD JOHNSON
William “Bill” Edward Johnson, 65, of Independence died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, 7000 Blue
Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Mo., with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the chapel.
Bill was born May 27, 1935, to Harry E. and Ruth Irene Johnson.
Bill attended William Chrisman High School, Independence. He married Betty J. Renfrow on Sept. 23, 1960.
He worked for his father, who owned a house moving company, and later went to work for Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1995.
Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He loved auto racing and researching his family history using the Internet.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a staunch supporter of V.F.W. Post No. 1000, Independence.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and his eldest sister, Doris Crump.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Betty J. Johnson, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Mike Lindsey, and Jacqueline and Gregory Ferguson; a brother, Gilbert Johnson, Independence; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Rick Schneider, Sarasota, Fla., and Norma and David Bucey, Independence; and four grandchildren. Lacy Ann Richardson, William Ryan Richardson, Joshua William Lindsey and Zachariah Pierce Lindsey.

MARY M. TAYLOR
Mary Michaela Canavan Taylor, 82, of Lee’s Summit, formerly of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at John Knox Village Care Center after a brief illness.
A memorial Mass is 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, 130 N.W. Murray Road, Lee’s Summit.
The family receives friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Private burial in Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Kan.
Mary was born May 10, 1918, in Provo, Utah, to Michael and Rhea Canavan.
Mary attended schools in Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., Redemptorist High School, Kansas City, Mo., and St. Mary College, Leavenworth, Kan.
She was a homemaker and later worked for Jackson County in the county clerk’s and recorder’s officers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Taylor, former Jackson County treasurer; and a brother, Jack Canavan.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Sr. Sheila Taylor, SCL, Kansas City, Mo., and Sharon and Michael Simon, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren, Marty and Melinda Simon, Oklahoma City; and her mother, Rhea Gallagher, Lee’s Summit.
