F. Jo Ann Shirley, 69, died May 1, 2003, at her daughter’s home in Newton, Kan., after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 20, 1933, in Elijah, Mo., the daughter of Robert and Jewell McGoldrick.
She was a 1951 graduate of Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield, Mo.
She was a resident of Grain Valley, formerly of Lake Lotawana, where she was a city clerk for many years.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Oak Grove, Mo.
She was married to William A. “Jack” Shirley on Dec. 1, 1951.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Burgess, and one grandson, Derek Burgess, both of Newton; two brothers, Dwayne McGoldrick, Springfield, Mo., and Tom McGoldrick, West Plains, Mo.; one uncle, Merle McGoldrick, Ripon, Calif.; two nieces; one nephew; and several cousins.
Visitation is 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Langsford Funeral Home, with funeral services to follow at 3 p.m.
Burial is 2 p.m. Sunday, at Howell County Memorial Gardens, West Plains.

RICHARD FRANCIS LONG
Richard Francis Long, 60, Independence, died April 28, 2003, at Truman Medical Center.
Funeral services are 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Mt. Washington Forever Funeral Home; burial at a later date at Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery.
A “Celebration of Life” will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to services.
ADA “DOCIA” WILSON
Docia Wilson, born Sept. 17, 1900, in Appleton City, Mo., to Theodore and Lauvina Anderson, died on April 27, 2003, at the age of 102. She made her home in Raytown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and one brother.
She is survived by a brother, Lawrence Anderson, Kurtistown, Hawaii; two sons, Leslie Wilson, Lee’s Summit, and Clifford Wilson, Raytown; one daughter, Stella Bearce, Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.
Docia had many wonderful Christian qualities along with a great sense of humor.
Because of her love for her Lord, she loved people, especially children, and they loved her equally.
She farmed and milked 50 cows with her husband near Appleton City for 30 years until his death at age 52, then moved to Kansas City, Mo. and raised several grandchildren while cleaning houses and ironing to help buy her own home.
She lived life to the maximum.
She visited, wrote notes and telephoned shut-ins, was the neighborhood seamstress, and taught Sunday School for 87 years, the last 44 years were spent teaching five-year olds.
She taught until she reached the age of 99.
She won Mrs. Nursing Home Queen for the State of Missouri when she was 100 and celebrated her 102nd birthday by riding on a jet ski with her eldest son.
Visitation is 12:30 to 1:30 Saturday, May 3, at First Baptist Church, 10500 350 Highway, Raytown, followed by a celebration service at 1:30. Graveside services will be at Appleton City Cemetery between 3 and 3:30 p.m.
The family suggests donations in her memory be given to the Building Fund, First Baptist Church of Raytown, but flowers will also be appreciated.

WALTER WEYHOFEN
Walter Weyhofen, 81, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003, at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit; burial in Floral Hills East Cemetery.
Friends may call 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, prior to the service.
He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Desseldorf, Germany.
He owned and operated Metric Tool and Die Corp., which he founded in 1964.
He retired in 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julie Weyhofen, of the home; two sons, Juergen Weyhofen, and Richard Weyhofen and wife Brigid; five grandchildren, Katie Weyhofen, Amy Weyhofen, Cody Weyhofen, Kelsey Weyhofen, and Cooper Weyhofen; and his great-granddaughter, Haylee Hudson.

HELEN L. GRAHN
Helen L. Grahn, 83, of Lake Winnebago, passed away Sunday April 27, 2003, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5th and Green Streets, Lee’s Summit; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5th and Green Streets, Lee’s Summit MO 64063.
She was born May 25, 1919, in Miami County, Kan.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
She served many years on the Altar Guild.
She was a member of the Raytown Chapter #97 of the Eastern Star.
Helen worked with her husband and son for over 47 years at Grahn Manufacturing Co., Inc. in Kansas City, and served as secretary and treasurer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor B. “Dick” Grahn; three brothers, Charlie, Lester and Harold McDonald; and parents, John and Leatha McDonald.
She is survived by one son, Mike Grahn and wife Diana, Lake Winnebago; two grandsons, Kristian Grahn and wife Cindy, North Kansas City, Mo., and Peter Grahn, Lake Winnebago; one great-grandson, Samuel Alexander Grahn, North Kansas City; two sisters, Velda Molotsky, Raytown, and Bernita Ala and husband George, Lacine, Kan.; and one sister-in-law, Mabel McDonald, Blue Springs.

MARTHA LEE (JOHNSON) COBB
Martha Lee was the first child born to Sydney Smith Johnson and Pansy Myrtle (Campbell) Johnson on May 28, 1914, in Lee’s Summit.
As a young girl she attended Lee’s Summit schools along with her sister, Sara Virginia, and brother, Robert Key.
In 1931, while attending Presbyterian church camp in Hollister, Mo., she met her future husband, Marion Reed Cobb.
They maintained a long-distance courtship during the following years as Martha graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1932, went to cosmetology school in Kansas City, and worked, while Marion attended Southwestern University in Memphis, Tenn.
On Oct. 9, 1939, they married in her parents’ home at 110 Madison, Lee’s Summit, with Marion’s father officiating.
They made their home in Kansas City, then Houston, Texas.
World War II rocked the world and Marion entered military service.
Martha returned to Lee’s Summit to reside with her parents while Marion was stationed in Europe with the Medical Corps of the 35th Infantry. On June 1, 1944, their first son, Marion Reed Jr. was born.
Marion returned home in October 1945 to meet his son for the first time.
Their second son, James Price, arrived on July 1, 1946.
In 1953, Marion, working for Prudential Insurance Company, was transferred to Oklahoma City as manager, and Martha began work in retail sales at Rothschild’s Department Store.
Following Marion’s death in 1969, Martha returned to reside with her sister in Lee’s Summit.
Martha lived an active life throughout her 88 years.
Until a few months prior to her passing, she attended the “Unabridged Ladies Group” who stopped playing bridge six years ago but met regularly for lunch, and was active in the Chapter ET of PEO for 55 years, serving as president and in many other capacities.
She worked as an Election Judge for over 50 years, participated in her Neighborhood Condo Association, and was a member of the Water Babes aerobic group.
She loved her church and participated in the prayer chain, cooked for various events, sewed, greeted, perpetually ironed altar cloths, and acted as official scribe of thousands of notes for all occasions.
She was a member of the “Presbyterian Quilters” and active in “Sarah’s Circle.”
Above all she was faithful to her family. The values that she practiced in daily living were passed on to succeeding generations and reached beyond physical boundaries. These values created strong family ties that stretch from New Jersey to California, Missouri to Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, as well as the Kansas City area.
Martha died April 20, 2003, at home, after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother; and sister.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, Reed and Diane Cobb, Bella Vista, Ark., and Jim and Dail Cobb, Norman, Okla.; grandchildren, Sara Brennan, Round Rock, Texas, Michael and Paola Cobb, Ridgewood, N.J., Christopher and Jennifer Cobb, Austin, Texas, Phil and Melanie Cobb, Los Angeles, Calif., and Sydney Cobb, Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren, William, Alexander, John Michael, Nicolas, Corina, and number six is due in August; her sister-in-law, Dean Johnson and nephews and nieces, Byron, Pam, Mike and Carl and their spouses; eight great and four great-great nieces and nephews also survive her.
She will be fondly remembered by her family and a host of friends.
The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, with memorial services to follow at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 1625 W. O’Brien Road, Lee’s Summit.
Cremation with a private family inurnment will be held in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The family would like to thank Kansas City Hospice for their wonderful care.

BRUCE RIAN KENT
Bruce Rian Kent, 71, of Lee’s Summit, passed away April 18, 2003, at Wilshire at Lakewood Nursing Home.
Mass was 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Our Lady of Presentation Catholic Church, Lee’s Summit; burial in Lee’s Summit Historical Society.
Friends called 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Langsford Funeral Home, with a Rosary and Prayer service at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Parkinson’s Association, and/or Our Lady of Presentation Catholic Church, (Bruce R. Kent Memorial Fund).
Mr. Kent was born Aug. 11, 1931, in Detroit, Mich.
He was a member of Our Lady of Presentation Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant.
Bruce had a successful banking career beginning at Bank of Hunnewell in 1949.
In 1955, he was assistant vice president of First National Bank in Independence where he met and married his wife Helen.
In 1959, he became vice president and cashier of Jackson County State Bank in Kansas City.
In 1965, he became president of Midland Bank and was director and co-owner.
He was interim president of Westport Bank in 1985.
He was a member of various banking associations.
He was past secretary of the Optimist Club and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship of the Rotary Club.
In 1968, he was president and director of the Chamber of Commerce of Lee’s Summit.
He served as director of Lee’s Summit Cancer Society and the Advisory Council of St. Joseph’s Hospital Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard R. and Marie Kent; and brother, Robert Kent.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Terri Workman and husband David; four grandchildren, Mitchell, Bradley, Garrett and Jacqueline, of Lee’s Summit; and one sister, Nancy Thoben and husband Joe, Hemet, Calif.
He was a long time golfer and member of Hillcrest Country Club.
His great sense of humor and positive attitude keeps him in the memories of his many friends and associates.
He was a most caring, generous and compassionate person and will be missed by family and all who knew him.

AUSTA (WHITE) SEVERSON
Austa (White) Severson, 91, of Lee’s Summit, passed away April 8, 2003, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee’s Summit.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Unity School of Christianity Rose Garden, with a scattering ceremony.
Austa was born July 6, 1911, in Cleveland, Ohio, and married Paul H. Severson in 1934.
She retired from Mellon National Mortgage in Cleveland in 1977.
She lived in Maryville, Tenn. before moving to Lee’s Summit in 1997.
She did volunteer work at the Lee’s Summit Hospital and John Knox Village.
Austa enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
Austa was a member of Unity School of Christianity.
Survivors include her son, Philip W. Severson and wife Pat; grandchildren, Karen Frost and husband Donny, Harrisonville, Kimberly Melancon and husband Mark, Winnetka, Ill., and Kristen Hansan and husband Michael, Olathe, Kan.; and great-grandchildren, Nathan, Sarah Kate, Allison and Joseph Hansan, and Rachel and Luke Melancon.
