Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Langsford Funeral Home; graveside services are at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, Mo.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Gertrude E. Powers, 85, Independence, died July 3, 2004, at her home.

JANICE J. GROOM
Janice J. Groom, 66, of Lee’s Summit, passed away at her home and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June, 28, 2004.
Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, at Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, 114 S.E. Douglas, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063; graveside service to follow at Floral Hills East Cemetery.
Janice was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Bellflower, Mo.
She was valedictorian of her high school class and went on to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she graduated with a degree in interior design.
She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
She married Lorin Groom Jr. on Aug. 21, 1960.
Jan and Lorin lived in Colorado for many years before returning to the area in 1971.
Janice was a devoted mother and homemaker as well as a talented interior decorator.
She loved playing bridge, watching tennis, doting on her grandchildren and taking numerous trips with Lorin throughout Europe as well as Canada and the United States.
Jan’s family and friends will miss her generous, loving spirit, her infectious laughter and the ever-present twinkle in her eye.
She is survived by her husband, Lorin; two children, Bradley Groom and wife, Allison, Coppell, Texas, and Melanie Dalton and husband, Scott, Leawood, Kan.; and three grandchildren, Meredith, Ryan and Max.

FRANCES M. MCQUEEN
Frances M. McQueen, 87, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Monday, June 28, 2004, at her residence. Cremation.
Frances was born March 1, 1917, in Hiroshima, Japan, to Mastutako and Sake (Hanoka) Murakami, and had lived in the Lee’s Summit area for 35 years.
Before retiring, Frances was a self-employed barber. She was a Buddhist.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Wallace W. McQueen, of the home; a son, Jonathan Johnson, Grandview, Mo.; a brother; a sister; two nieces, Sharon and Sandy; and a nephew, Vernon.

MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER MCDOWELL
Michael Christopher McDowell, 21, of Independence, passed away Monday, June 28, 2004.
Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, at George C. Carson & Sons Funeral Home; interment in Mound Grove Cemetery.
Michael was born March 24, 1983, to Stephan Lee McDowell and Heidi Edwards Keith.
He attended William Chrisman High School and recently graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange College while residing with his great-aunt and great-uncle, Bill and LeAnn Behymer.
Michael is survived by his wife, Tauja McDowell, Hannibal, Mo.; father and step-mother, Steve and Melissa McDowell, Independence; mother and step-father, Heidi and Jefferson Keith, Lee’s Summit; brother, Joshua McDowell, Independence; half sister, Ashley Keith, Lee’s Summit; step-brother, Bobby Cochran and wife, Ashley, Lee’s Summit; step-sister, Amanda Cochran, Lee’s Summit; half brothers and sister, Jonathan, Harley and Stephanie McDowell; half sister, Jennifer McDowell, Independence; maternal grandmother, Dolores Hain, Kansas City, Mo.; grandfather and step-grandmother, Gerald and Wilma Edwards, Richmond, Mo.; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Marie McDowell, Independence; step-grandparents, Jacqueline and the late John Keith, Buckner, Mo., and John and Mary Thompson, Harrison, Ark.; and several loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Michael will be forever remembered by us as the bright, creative and humorous young man that made us smile and and filled our hearts with joy.
He was a great example of a perfect son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed.

CAPTAIN RICHARD E. BELSER, USNR (RET)
Captain Richard E. Belser, USNR (Ret), 89, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at his home.
Mass services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 10017 E. 36th Terrace, Independence; burial in Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
Richard was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Lee’s Summit, to Frederick and Marion (Donovan) Belser.
He retired from Lake City.
He was a lifelong member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #684, American Legion of Independence, honorary member of Missouri Sheriff Association, and a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Billie Marie; his brothers, Bill, Leroy and Jim; and his sisters, Dorothy and Helen.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharie McCarthy, Kansas City, Dana Famuliner, Lee’s Summit, and Pam Lambros and husband, George, Kansas City; eight grandchildren, Lynn (Jim) Rodgers, Suzanne (Brooks) Ball, Nicole (Frank) Totta, Ashley Lambros and R. Travis Lambros; six great-grandchildren, Nick, Chris and Josh Rodgers, Xavier Lambros, Samuel Ball and Sophia Totta; brothers, Jack (Flo) Belser, Bob Belser and Wayne (Paula) Belser; sisters, Carol Boyd, Betty Heinrichs, Joan Jones and Martha (Gunther) Reinhardt; and sisters-in-law, Mimi Belser and Robbie Belser.
He was loved by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

MAURINE N. MITCHELL
Maurine N. Mitchell, 90, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Village Care Center.
A celebration of life will be held privately by the family.

Maurine was born April 3, 1914, in Bendena, Kan.
She is survived by one sister, Agnes Roe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ROGER RIFFIE
Roger Riffie, 53, of Lee’s Summit, passed away from a heart attack on Friday, June 25, 2004, at Lee’s Summit Hospital.
A memorial service are at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, in the shelter house of the west Marina of Lakewood, Woods Chapel Road and
Beechwood Drive, Lee’s Summit.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Legacy Music Scholarship at Lee’s Summit High School, which was established in March of this year to honor Vance Riffie’s years of service as choral director.
Roger was born Feb. 15, 1951, in Cameron, Mo., and lived in Lee’s Summit for most of his life.
He graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1969 and attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo. from 1969 to 1972 as a music major and a member of The One and Only Singers.
He owned Riffie Piano Service for 22 years and was an expert piano technician and tuner, as well as a prolific poet and philosopher.
He gave piano lessons to children and adults of all ages while continuing to study piano himself.
In his earlier years, he managed a health food store and was a church choir director.
He was secretary of the Piano Technicians Guild and a member of the Music Teachers National Association, and Missouri Music Teachers Association.
Roger is survived by his wife, Jan, and two “dog” children, Jack and Cody, of the home; a son, Aaron, Lee’s Summit, stepson, John Hansen and wife, Christy, Independence; and parents, Vance and Wilma Riffie, and brother Wendel and wife, Carol, all of Springfield, Mo.

ELIZABETH “KAY” ROBERTS
Kay Roberts, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Lee’s Summit, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004, surrounded by her loving family.
Her passing follows a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services are at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Langsford Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 5: 30 to 6:30 p.m., prior to services, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Cancer Action, Inc., or Good Shepherd Hospice.
Kay was born Nov. 5, 1937, in St. Joseph, Mo.
She married and moved to Lee’s Summit where she raised her family of five children.
She was a member of Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church.
She also served as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program.
Kay is survived by her parents, Clyde and Datha Laderoute, Kansas City; a sister, Ann Laderoute; brother, Roger; daughter, Traci Atzmiller, son-in-law, Rock, and their children, Evan and Adrienne, San Diego, Calif.; sons, Mark Roberts, daughter-in-law, Jenifer, and granddaughter, Keely Elizabeth, Randy Roberts, daughter-in-law, LuAnn, and granddaughters, Erin and Carly, Nick Roberts, daughter-in-law, Shanon, and their children, Jonathon, Madilyn Kaylie, Sophie and Gracie Elizabeth, and youngest son, Brent Roberts, Los Angeles, Calif.
Kay Roberts was loved by all who knew her and will be remembered as a woman of great beauty, grace and compassion.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Good Shepherd Hospice and The Manor Care Center for their kindness and loving care.
Kay was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who loved her family and always put their interests first.
