Vaden C. Gutting

April 24, 1924 - Jan. 20, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Vaden C. Gutting, 79, of Kahoka, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital.

He was born April 24, 1924, near Revere, Mo., a son of Earl S. and Lula E. Horton Gutting.

He was married to Bernice Roberts on Oct. 19, 1942, and they were the parents of Connie, Vaden, and Brenda. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1963. He later married Bettie Gray and they were the parents of a son, Chuck. In June of 1977 he was united in marriage to Judy Allen.

Survivors include: his wife of Kahoka; two sons, Vaden L. "Bud" Gutting and his wife, Deborah, of Quincy, Ill., and Chuck Gutting and his wife, Jessica, of Clayton, Ill.; two daughters, Connie Gutting Bertelli and Brenda Gutting, both of Quincy; a step-son, Joe Terrill and his wife, Jocelyn, of Hill Air Base, Utah; four step-daughters, Angel Gustin and her husband, Richard, of Nauvoo, Ill., Connie S. Fulkerson and her husband, Ronnie, of Wynne, Ark., Nancy McAndrew and her husband, Tom, of Ottumwa, and Shelly Wood and her husband, Gary, of Arbela, Mo.; a brother, Ronnie Gutting and his wife, Dixie, of Wyaconda, Mo.; a sister, Claire Summerall of Ottumwa; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Verle Dean and Vance Gutting; and a sister, Veda Bogguss.

He attended school in Revere, before entering the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts.

Mr. Gutting had been employed by the former Martin Chevrolet as a salesman before opening G & W Garage which he operated for 36 years. He later ran a small engine business out of his home.

He was a member of the Kahoka Christian Church.

Mr. Gutting enjoyed playing cards, woodworking and fishing. He liked keeping busy and was most happy when working and visiting with his friends. He loved and cherished his family.

Funeral services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, with Rev. Dick Clifford officiating.

Burial with full military rites will be in the Kahoka cemetery.

Friends can call today at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Clark County Ambulance District.

Betty Jean Bernardi

March 26, 1926 - Jan. 17, 2004

STEELEVILLE, Mo. - Betty Jean Bernardi, 77, of Steeleville, Mo., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at her home.

She was born to Arthur C. and Minnie Peterson Larsen on March 26, 1926, in Keokuk.

She married William C. Bernardi.

Survivors include: two sons, Michael W. (Jann) Bernardi and Mark D. Bernardi; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Dorothy Moore of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and a sister-in-law, Mary C. Larsen of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter; a sister, Louise Larsen Wells; and a brother, Macolm Larsen.

Services were held in Manchester, Mo., today.

Teresa Lynn Overhulser

June 14, 1959 - Jan. 21, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Teresa Lynn Overhulser, 44, of Kahoka, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

She was born June 14, 1959 in Avon, Ill., a daughter of Ross Edward and Doris Vivian Suter Ragon. She married John Goddard on June 17, 1977. To this union two sons were born. She later married John Overhulser on March 14, 1996 in Branson, Mo. He survives.

Additional survivors include: two sons, Chad Goddard and his wife Tonya of Kahoka, and Jason Goddard of Rushville, Ill.; three step-daughters, Dana Overhulser of Quincy, Lynettia Felling and her husband Roger of Wyaconda, Mo., and Katrina Overhulser of Kahoka; her mother-in-law, Nelda Overhulser of Kahoka; seven grandchildren, Michaela Overhulser who she was raising, Colleen Overhulser, Joshua and Joseph Goddard, Sierra Harris and Kassandra and Christina Felling; three sisters, Genevive Epperson of Alpha, Ill., Beverly Derr of Atwood, Colo., and Martha Harn and her husband Fred of Bushnell, Ill.; two brothers, Dan Alfred Ragon and his wife Vera of Galesburg, Ill., and Clair (Zip) Ragon and his wife Ruby of Bushnell; an aunt, Norma Watson of Monmouth, Ill.; an uncle, Dick Suter and his wife Edith of Bushnell; a brother-in-law, David Overhulser and his wife Hope of Alexandria, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Jo (Sinney) Cochenour of Camdenton, Mo., and Deloris Branson and her husband Ernie of Revere, Mo.; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father-in-law, Wayne L. Overhulser; a sister Barbara Hammond; a brother-in-law, Bill Epperson; and a nephew, Danny Ragon.

She graduated from Prairie City High School in Bushnell, Ill., with the class of 1977.

Mrs. Overhulser was employed as manager of Casey's in Kahoka for 10 years.

She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and sewing. She was an avid Viking fan never missing a game. She liked to collect chickens.

Mrs. Overhulser was a very helpful person, always there to help those in need. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family. Each of her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, just as she did in theirs. The love and wonderful memories she has created will never be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating.

Burial will be in the Combs cemetery, Luray, Mo.

Visitation will be today with the family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family for Michaela and Colleen.

Kathleen F. Thompson

July 22, 1914 - Jan. 29, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Kathleen F. Thompson, 89, of Kahoka, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born July 22, 1914, in Scotland County near Memphis, Mo., a daughter of Ray and Meda Knupp Staten.

On Aug. 27, 1960, she was united in marriage to John W. Thompson in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1993.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including locally, Allen Dochterman, James and Norma Dochterman and Carol and Norman Pitford, all of Kahoka; as well as several cousins.

She also was preceded in death by her step-mother, Belinda Wilsey Lingle Staten.

She graduated from Kahoka High School and from William Jewel College.

Mrs. Thompson taught schools in Illinois and Missouri, retiring after 34 years while at Revere, Mo.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Kahoka, the Women's Mission Circle, and a Sunday School teacher for many years.

Mrs. Thompson was also an active member of Chapter AW, P.E.O. at Kahoka and the Clark County Retired Teachers.

She had a sweet personality and was a friend to all who knew her.

Funeral services are Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Kahoka, with Rev. Gary Payne officiating.

Burial is in Barker cemetery in northern Scotland Co.

Friends can call after 10 a.m. on Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, with family meeting friends from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Kahoka or Barker cemetery.

Jordy Adam Gardin

Aug. 27, 1987 - Feb. 20, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Jordy Adam Gardin, 16, of Kahoka, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, in an automobile accident one mile west of Wayland, Mo.

He was born August 27, 1987, in Keokuk, the son of Timothy and Shelly Rampley Gardin.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Timothy and Michelle Gardin of Burlington; mother and step-father, Shelly and Rick Frey of Kahoka; his grandparents, Charles and Joan Rampley of Kahoka, Laurel and Versie Gardin of Siren, Wis., Dewey and Carol Frey of Kahoka, and Pat Jones of Warsaw, Ill.; great-grandfather, Wayne Jones of Warsaw; two brothers, Justin Lee Gardin and Jerry P. Gardin, both of Kahoka; two step-brothers, Kris Walters and Zack Harris, both of Burlington; aunts and uncles, Judy and Mike Dray and Pat and Howard Bowden, all of Keokuk, Lynn Gardin of Minneapolis, Minn.; several step-aunts and uncles including Chrissy Frey of Sarasota, Fla., and Tina Watts and Autumn Jones, both of Council Bluffs; several great-aunts and uncles, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Oscar and Edith Gardin, Arnold and Lillian Offerdahl, Charlie and Luella Rampley, Andy and Ada Mae Elder and step-great-grandmother, Anna Jones.

He was a junior at Clark County R-1 High School and was involved in F.F.A. and chorus.

He had planned to major in psychology after graduating from high school. He was employed at the Hawkeye Restaurant in Keokuk and had been attending the First Baptist Church in Wayland.

He was a fan of the Philadelphia 76ers and the Minnesota Vikings. He also loved rap music and dogs. He was especially fond of Stubby and Grandpa Frey's dog, Duke. He enjoyed helping the Kahoka Lion's Club make ice cream and with their other projects.

His eyes have been donated to the Missouri Eye Bank so that someone else may have sight.

He was known for his smile and big heart and was a friend to everyone.

Funeral services are Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Dan Deatrick officiating.

Burial will be in Kahoka cemetery.

Friends can call today at Wilson Funeral Home with family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Kahoka Lion's Club.

Vera J. Heinze

April 24, 1917 - March 8, 2004

KAHOKA, Mo. - Vera J. Heinze, 86, of Kahoka, Mo., died Monday, March 8, 2004 in Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born April 24, 1917, on a farm northwest of Chambersburg, Mo., to William and Dorothy McWilliams Hopp.

She grew up on the farm where she was born and on Nov. 17, 1951, was united in marriage to George Heinze. They lived on a farm north of Kahoka until moving into town in 1995.

Survivors include: her husband; a sister, Madeline Hopp; and a sister-in-law, Doris Heinze, all of Kahoka; as well as several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

Mrs. Heinze graduated from Luray High School and Kirksville State Teacher's College.

She was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka, the D.A.R., Clark County Retired Teachers, and Chapter AW, P.E.O. and was always faithful in her memberships as long as her health permitted.

Mrs. Heinze had taught school for more than 40 years and loved teaching and loved her students.

Funeral services are Friday at 1 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating.

Burial will be in St. Paul Church cemetery.

Friends can call after 9 a.m. on Thursday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
