Monica Ann Kawallek, 70, Harrisonville, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville.
She was born Oct. 1, 1935, in Harrisonville, the daughter of Harvey Lee Matthews and Georgia Pauline (Dobson) Matthews Jorgensen.
Jan. 22, 1955, she married John Otto Kawallek.
Mrs. Kawallek was employed with United Telephone, which later became Sprint in Warrensburg until her retirement in 1994. Earlier she had been employed with Bendix in Kansas City.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville, and was a lifelong area resident.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John Kawallek, Oct. 27, 1990; a sister, Dixie Helt; and her stepfather, Oscar “Swede” Jorgensen.
Surviving are two sons, Curtis K. Kawallek and wife, Lynn, Preston, and David R. Kawallek and wife, Karen, Lee’s Summit; a sister, Georgia Williams, Stockton; three granddaughters, Centa, Brit and Shayla; and other relatives and many friends.
Casket bearers were Curtis Kawallek, David Kawallek, Roy Helt, Todd Ferguson, Jay Ferguson, Mike Diehl, Kendall Sheets and Bill Elgin.
Graveside services and burial were July 8 at Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, with Pastor Rick Friesen officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Crossroads Hospice.
Janet Lee

Janet Lee, 86, Harrisonville, died June 27, 2006.
She was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Victoria, Kan., the daughter of August and Rosa (Rupp) Wolf.
Graveside services were June 29 at Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
David S. Long III
May 1, 1963 - July 7, 2006
David S. Long III, 53, Warsaw, formerly of Kansas City, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at his home.
He was born and raised in Kansas City, and was a 1971 graduate of Southwest High School.
He received a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Southwest Missouri State University in 1976, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Mr. Long was a teacher at Westport High School from 1987 until 1998. His love of and natural gift for teaching these young adults was his greatest gift.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Edwin Vaughan and Mary (Jordan) Long.
Surviving are his children, Lillian Eda Long and Vincent Pearse Long, their mother, Julia Splan, and his granddaughter, Julia Lennon Bailey, all of Kansas City; and his brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Nancy Long, Harrisonville.
Memorial services were July 11, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
George L. Russell
June 26, 1947 - July 9, 2006
George Leonard Russell. 59, Harrisonville, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at his home.
He was born June 26, 1947, in Carnegie, Okla., the son of Jack Andrew and Johnnie R. (Henly) Russell.
The family moved to Harrisonville in 1955 and Mr. Russell was a 1966 graduate of Harrisonville High School. He had lived in Texas, Louisiana, and Hamilton, Ohio, before moving back to Harrisonville. He worked in commercial and residential landscaping. He was a Methodist.
Preceding him in death were his father, Jack, and a brother, Raymond.
He is survived by his mother, Johnnie Russell, Harrisonville; a brother, David Russell, Harrisonville; and a sister, Donna Kircher, Harrisonville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
A memorial gathering of family and friends will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at Brady Cemetery, near Harrisonville.
Contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Jo-Ann DesMarteau

Jo-Ann DesMarteau, 76, Overland Park, Kan., died July 26, 2006.
She was born April 10, 1930, in Keystone, the daughter of John and Marie O’Connor.
Services were July 31 with burial at Forest Hill Calvary Cemeteries, under the direction of the Amos Family Funeral Home, Lenexa, Kan.
Arthur Junior “Dick” Edmondson
Sept. 3, 1935 - July 26, 2006
Arthur Junior “Dick” Edmondson, 70, Harrisonville, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at his home in Harrisonville.
He was born Sept. 3, 1935, in Brownington, the son of Arthur and Viola Catherine (Oliphant) Edmondson.
Mr. Edmondson was employed as an assembler for General Motors Leed’s Plant, Kansas City, until his retirement in 1990. He was also employed as a part-time deputy for the Cass County Sheriff’s TMs Department.
He was an Army veteran. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville, and the United Auto Workers Union Local No. 92, Kansas City. Mr. Edmondson moved to Harrisonville in 1948.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Alva Edmondson.
Surviving are two daughters, Charlotte J. Edmondson, Greenfield, and Connie P. Claspell and husband, Lewis, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Helen Evans, Harrisonville, Mary Esther Reeves, Lee’s Summit, and Mary Evelyn Oesth, Odessa; seven grandchildren, Abigail, Jason, Ashley, Alexandra, Anthony, Matthew and Joshua; and other relatives and many friends.
A memorial service was July 29, at the Dickey Funeral Home Harrisonville, with the Rev. David Noble officiating.
Cremation.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.

Hazel Dean Johnston
Oct. 20, 1928 - July 30, 2006
Hazel Dean (Sloan) Johnston, 77, Shawnee, Okla., died Sunday, July 30, 2006 at home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1928, in Archie, the daughter of Jim and Louise (Weddington) Sloan.
She graduated from Harrisonville High School.
She was married to Edgar L. (Sonny) Sands. On Dec. 5, 1959, she married Jack L. Johnston in Durant, Okla., and they made their home in Okahoma City, Okla., until 1974 when then moved to the Shawnee area.
Mrs. Johnston worked at Kroger’s and then retired from Tinker Air Force Base where she was an assistant cashier manager of the commissary and later transferred to the procurement office.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and had many hobbies which included sewing, cooking and gardening.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her son, Michael Len Johnston; two brothers Leonard Sloan and James Sloan; and a sister, Helen Sloan Henry.
Surviving are her husband, Jack, and their grandson, Michael, of the home; three daughters Sandy Benson and her husband, Terry, Blanchard, Okla., Carol Bryan and her husband, Terry, Tampa, Fla., and Karen Mills and her husband, Brad, Stillwater, Okla.; two sisters, Pauline Hooten, St. Louis, and Goldie Rook, Pleasant Hill; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Services were Aug. 3, at Resthaven Funeral Home in Shawnee with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Carol Foster Jones, 58, Garden City, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Golden Years Care Services, Harrisonville.
Visitation was from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
Services were at 10 a.m. Aug. 4 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
Burial was in the Garden City Cemetery under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
