Ida “Billie” Shick, 88, formerly of Kansas City and Osceola, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville.
Mrs. Shick had been employed for many years at the Kansas City Water Department and at Children’s Mercy Hospital. She devoted many years to leadership in the Boy Scouts of America and to her church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband of 54 years, Albert Ray Shick.
Surviving are three sons, Ray “Bert” and Kathleen, Harrisonville, James N. and Patty, Independence, and Thomas E. and Gina, Bates City; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of others whom she loved and called her own.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Antioch Southern Baptist Church in Harrisonville. A brief memorial will also be included at the 10 a.m. Sunday morning service at the Church of the Brethren in Osceola Oct. 29.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her honor to Children’s Mercy Hospital or take flowers to brighten a local nursing home.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Park Lawn Funeral Home.
Bertha Mamie Slager

Bertha Mamie Slager, 84, Cleveland, died Oct. 17, 2006, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
She was born Feb. 15, 1922, in Lone Jack, the daughter of Alfred and Mamie Hansena (Anderson) Johnson.
Mrs. Slager grew up in the Holden and Warrensburg area. She lived in Independence before moving to Freeman in 1955. She worked at Lake City Arsenal in the early 1950s.
She also was a cattle rancher and a farmer. She was a member of Drexel Church of the Nazarene.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John Slager on May 26, 1979; and a son, B. Delon Thompson on Jan. 3, 2006.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Thompson, Frankfort, Ky.; two daughters, Eva Sharon Wirsig and Connie Jean Thurman, both of Cleveland; her first husband, Hugh R. Thompson, Cleveland; a sister, Cleo Elliott, Stockton; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were John Paul Wirsig, Kenneth R. Thompson, Bryan M. Thompson, Jarrette Thompson, Jonathan Thompson and Kimberly James.
Services were Oct. 21 at the Drexel Church of the Nazarene, Drexel, with the Revs. Mark and Stefanie Hendrickson and the Rev. Mike Cooper officiating.
Burial was in the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Music was provided by Connie Thurman, Sharon Wirsig and Mike Cooper, vocalists, and Mary Rose Thompson, pianist.
The family suggests contributions be made to the church.
Virginia Louise Sweitzer

Virginia Louise Sweitzer, 85, Harrisonville, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville
She was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Columbia, the daughter of Bernard Daniel and Edith Rebecca (Hulett) Simon.
On Sept. 4, 1948, she married George Theodore Sweitzer Jr. in Columbia.
Mrs. Sweitzer was employed as a supervisor for the Missouri Department of Social Services, Harrisonville, from the mid 1960s until her retirement in 1987. Earlier, before her marriage to George she was the assistant to the registrar at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville.
Mrs. Sweitzer was a graduate of the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority and Delvers. She was a member of the Cass County Chapter of the University of Missouri Alumni Association and she had lived in Columbia before moving to Harrisonville in 1948.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Bill and Bob Simon; two sisters, Edith and Mary Martha; and an infant sister, Dorothy.
Surviving are her husband, George T. Sweitzer Jr. of the home; a son, George W. “Wally” Sweitzer and wife, Brenda; two daughters, Rebecca S. Kraxberger and husband, Michael H., Mary Helen Lehman; four grandchildren, Christopher, Celia, Gabriel, James; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, B.D. Simon and Jack Simon; and other relatives and many friends.
Honorary casket bearers were Lawrence Gribble and Gene Olson.
Casket bearers were Monte Cummins, Jimmy Kraxberger, Mike Kraxberger, John Simon, Gabe Sweitzer and Shane Wright.
Funeral mass was Oct. 23 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville with the Rev. Paw Lwin officiating. Music was provided by Donna Overcast, soloist, and Cindy Dunham, organist.
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville,
Rhonda L. Verdic

Rhonda L (Bernard) Verdic died surrounded by loving family on Oct. 16, 2006, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kan.
She was born Feb. 28, 1963, the daughter of Roger Lee and Toni (Mansfield) Bernard.
She lived most of her life in the Kansas City area moved to Hartford, Kan., in 2006.
Preceding her in death were her father in 1984; her paternal grandparents, Lee and Mamie Bernard; her maternal grandmother, Allene Mansfield; and grandparents, Roy and Ollie Wright.
Surviving are her husband Bobby Verdic Jr of the home; her mother, Toni, and stepfather, Loyd “Sonny” Wiseman, Peculiar; a daughter Mamie Bernard; a son, Michael McKenna II; stepchildren Danny Verdic, Toni (Daryl) Ferguson, Butler, Betsy and Robert Verdic, Mena, Ark.; a sister Rae Christine Sain-Lair (Virgil), Urich; a brother, Bretton Carroll, N. Kansas City; three stepbrothers Ron, Don (Joann) and Patrick Wiseman, two stepsisters, Sandra Wiseman and Angela (Gary) Hiland; his maternal grandfather, Richard Mansfield, La Feria, Texas; two grandchildren, Stella and Serenity, four step-grandchildren Harley, Dakota, Sierra and Gregory; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held later. Rhonda loved her family, friends, pets and fishing and she will be missed by many.
The family suggests contributions be made in Mrs. Verdic’s name to the nearest pet adoption center.
Joy (Saylor) Warner

Joy (Saylor) Warner, 65, Springfield, died Oct. 18 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield after a long battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 23, 1941, n Harrisonville, the daughter of Lois and Leonard Saylor.
Mrs. Warner attended Harrisonville High School and graduated with the class of 1959. During her high school years, she worked at P.K. Glenn’s Drug Store on the square where she made many friends.
She had an incredible faith in God. A heart as big as her’s was always on the look out for more people to love. Her loyalty as a friend inspired equal devotion in return. She was active member of the Glendale Christian Church, lending a hand whenever needed. The impact of her selfless investment in the lives of her “MOPS girls” will be felt for generations.
Preceding her in death were her father, Leonard, and sister, Janell.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Alex; her mother, Lois Stevick, Harrisonville; three sisters, Meyra, Cheri and Fran; a son and daughter-in-law; two daughters and sons-in-law; 23 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Oct. 21 at the Glendale Christian Church in Springfield.

Bonnie June Anderson

Bonnie June Anderson, 64, Harrisonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at her home.
She was born June 5, 1942, in Cherryvale, Kan., the daughter of Elden and Nita (Atchison) Sechrest.
She was a graduate of Harrisonville High School.
On Jan. 26, 1963, she married Lester Clark Anderson in Las Vegas, Nev.
Mrs. Anderson worked at the Harrisonville Post Office for 18 years before retiring in 2003. She was a lifelong area resident.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Lester, in Septemer 1982.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Smith and Tracie Fredericks, both of Harrisonville; a brother, Stanley Sechrest, Archie, and two grandchildren, Alex and Jarod Smith.
Casket bearers were Perry Rhodes, Ron Atchison, Don Atchison, Chuck Atchison, Bob Fredericks and Dewey McQuinn.
Services were Dec. 1, 2006, at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with Pastor Charles Kaighen officiating.
Burial was in Floral Hills East Cemetery in Lee’s Summit, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Richard J. Becker

Richard J. Becker, 63, Peculiar, died Thursday, Nov. 30, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
He was born March 4, 1943, in Kansas City, the son of George F. and Mary Catherine (Hardy) Becker.
Mr. Becker was a 1960 graduate of Bishop Hogan High School.
He married Kathleen L. Bossert on Jan. 23, 1965.
He had lived in the south Kansas City area for 12 years before making Peculiar his home for the past 32 years.
Mr. Becker owned and operated Richards Turf Nursery for more than 35 years, working through July of this year. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
Richard was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen, of the home; a son, Brian D. Becker, Raymore; three daughters, Karen M. Schuster and her husband, Randy, Lee’s Summit, Sharon Griggs and her husband, Gary, Panama City Beach, Fla., and Theresa K. Becker, St. Louis; his parents, George and Mary Catherine Becker, Lenexa, Kan.; a brother, Bob Becker, Harrisonville; two sisters, Suzanne Chelesnik and her husband, Dave, San Diego, Calif., and Kathy Sokol, Kansas City; two grandchildren, Cassandra and Shaun Schuster, Lee’s Summit; and other family and friends.
Funeral services were Dec. 5 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville, officiated by Father Paw Lwin. Music was by Donna Overcast, vocalist, and Cindy Dunham, organist. Cremation following service.
