Otha Marvin Burris
Aug. 3, 1921 - Nov. 29, 2006
Otha Marvin Burris was born Aug. 3, 1921, at home in Strasburg.
He was third of four children, all boys, born to Otha Elzy and Amanda (Beasley) Burris.
He spent the first nine years in the Strasburg school system and attended East Lynne High School the last three years, graduating in 1939. He was a member of Strasburg Baptist Church as a child.
He attended Brown Mackie Business College in Kansas City, Kan. after graduation from high school.
He married Hazel Lorene Stair on Feb. 7, 1942.
The same day he and Hazel were married he joined the Navy.
He was in the Navy in Kansas City, Kan., and later in Olathe, Kan., when the Naval Air Station was built.
He was a Yeoman, rising to Petty Officer first class by the time he was discharged in 1945.
While in the service, he was also stationed in Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, St. Simon’s Island, Ga., and aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.
His ship participated in the Okinawa invasion and his crew was one of the first to go ashore in Nagasaki after the Japanese surrender.
The Burris family moved to Harrisonville in 1952 where Mr. Burris became part owner of the local Ford dealership, which he later purchased in total from Bart Henderson.
Marvin Burris Ford Sales was the Ford, Mercury and Lincoln dealership for more than 20 years.
Prior to moving to Harrisonville, Mr. Burris was truck and fleet sales manager for Ford Motor Company in Kansas City.
Mr. Burris was very involved in the Harrisonville community serving on the Harrisonville School Board, a founder and board member of the Twin Pines County Club, a member of Cass Masonic Lodge 147, the VFW and the American Legion.
Mr. Burris spearheaded the Harrisonville Appreciation Day that was organized by a group of local businessmen in the 1970s who provided entertainment, festivities and a barbecue for the citizens of Harrisonville to show appreciation for their support of Harrisonville businesses.
Mr. Burris retired and sold his Ford dealership in 1977 to G.R. Milner.
In his retirement, he earned his real estate license and spent 10 years with Consolidated Realtors.
He was also a director of Citizens Bank of Harrisonville (later Commerce Bank) for 20 years.
His hobby and love was his farm on Highway M-7 where he raised cattle, baled hay and spent time with his grandchildren fishing, walking the pastures and enjoying the beauty of the land.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Austin, Elzy and Nelson.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel; a son, Gary Marvin Burris and his wife, Gail, Manning, S.C.; a daughter, Connie Sue Hodges and her husband, Bill, Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandsons, Greg, Garrett, David and Mark; and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn.
Services were Dec. 4 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with the Rev. Charles Sutton officiating.
Music was provided by Mike Bowman, soloist, and Teri Melvin, pianist. Reflections of Marvin were given by family and friends.
Casket bearers were Jim Bradley, Jerry Copeland, Homer Harris, Joe King, G.R. Milner and Randy Palmer
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Military services were under the auspices of the Harrisonville Honor Guard, Harrisonville.
Arvil Ray Cantrell
April 12, 1924 - Nov. 30, 2006
Arvil Ray Cantrell, 82, Harrisonville, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville.
He was born April 12, 1924, in Cotter, Ark., the son of William and Florida (McFarland) Cantrell.
He married Elsie Anna Joersz on Oct. 29, 1948, in Kansas City.
Mr. Cantrell lived in the Lisle area before moving to Harrisonville where he has lived for 26 years.
He worked for R.L. Fabion Tank Company in Raymore and Kansas City as a welder for more than 20 years before retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed hunting , fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed working with wood.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Frank and Billy Cantrell; and three sisters, Loretta, Violet Virginia and Annabelle.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Elsie, of the home; four sons, Ron Cantrell, Spring Hill, Tenn., Jerry Cantrell, Garden City, Larry Cantrell, Harrisonville, and Robert Cantrell and his wife, Kathryn, Freeman; two daughters, Barbara Kudlacik, Wantage, N.J., and Virginia Case, Roeland Park, Kan.; five sisters, Juanita, Jan, Betty, Mary and Lorraine; eight grandchildren, Shelly Cantrell, Mary Kudlacik, Willis Case, Melissa Case, Ginger Case, Christy Cantrell and Scharlie Cantrell; and six great-grandchildren, Mallory, Wyatt, Roxanne, Miranda, Veronica and Randy.
Honorary casket bearers were Kevin Miller and Brian Bicknell.
Casket bearers were Larry Cantrell, Robert Cantrell, Ron Cantrell, Jerry Cantrell, Brit Phillips and Kenny Silvers.
Services were Dec. 3 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, officiated by Rev. John Kukovich.
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Celia Ann Fisher
Dec. 20, 1975 - Dec. 1, 2006
Celia Ann Fisher, 30, Freeman, died Dec. 1, 2006, from injuries sustained in an car wreck.
She was born Dec. 20, 1975, in Independence, the daughter of Terry Lee Johnson and Pamela Diane McMilian.
Services were Dec. 4 at Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
Gladys Lucille Fredrickson
Jan. 21, 1920 - Nov. 20, 2006
Gladys Lucille Fredrickson, 95, Pleasant Hill, died Dec. 2, 2006, at John Knox Care Center, Lee’s Summit.
She was born May 25, 1911, in Garden City, the daughter of George B. and Nellie (Groh) Gilkeson.
She graduated from Garden City High School in 1929, as valedictorian of her class.
She received her teacher’s certification from Warrensburg State Teachers College in 1934.
She was an elementary teacher in Harrisonville and rural Cass County for 13 years.
April 19, 1947 she married Theodore G. Fredrickson in Kansas City, Kan.
He preceded her in death in September 1982.
They made their home on a farm southwest of Pleasant Hill.
She was a lifelong Methodist and member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and a leader of the Hickory Grove 4-H Club.
She enjoyed entertaining, gardening and her beautiful flowers.
Gladys was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by all.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and two brothers Dale and George B. Gilkeson.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Ellen Thurman and husband, Jim, Independence, and Lucille Powell and husband, Allen, Pleasant Hill; two granddaughters, Lucinda Powell and Leah Lindstrom and husband, Scott, all of Lee’s Summit; great-grandson, Carson Andrew Lindstrom, also of Lee’s Summit; a sister, Vera Orr Mission, Kan.; and many family and friends.
Services were Dec. 5, 2006, at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. with the Rev. Carl Knapp officiating.
Music was provided by Kelly Filer, soloist, Lucinda Powell, pianist, and Marie Roach, organist.
Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, under the direction of the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
Casket bearers were Charles Fredrickson, Wyne Fredrickson, Gary Gilkeson, Jerald Gilkeson, Larry Orr, Frederick Wickert and John Wickert.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

LaVerna McAnally Winchel, 87, Harrisonville, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville.
Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the church in Cleveland.
Burial will be in the Cleveland Cemetery, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Contributions may be made to the church building fund.

He was born March 17, 1924, in Kansas City, the son of Lester L. and Ethel P. Kizer Beltz.
Services were Jan. 30 at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, with burial in the Strasburg Cemetery, Strasburg.
John Robert Chandler

John Robert Chandler, 56, Pleasant Hill, died Dec. 31, 2006.
He was born May 8, 1950, in Independence, the Son of Jack O. Vittetoe and Roberta V. Hittle.
Private graveside services were Jan. 23, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
Patricia Pearl Crisp
April 13, 1935 - Jan. 23, 2007
Patricia “Patty” Pearl Crisp, 71, Butler, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Medicalodge of Butler, Butler.
She was born April 13, 1935, in Fort Scott, Kan., the daughter of Ernest Lee and Naomi Pearl (Gibson) Ford.
She had two sisters, Joy and Betty Jo and eight brothers, Wilford, Lloyd, Douglas, Marvin, Ernest Jr., Bud, Jack and Terry.
Mrs. Crisp attended junior high school in Adrian and was a 1953 graduate of Archie High School.
Jan. 29, 1955, she married Ronald Francis Crisp and they had four children, Rhonda, Michael, Jacklyn and Daniel.
Mrs. Crisp was a faithful member of the Austin Baptist Church for 17 years and then attended Fairview Baptist Church in Ballard.
She was a homemaker.
Preceding her in death were her parents; five brothers, Wilford, Lloyd, Douglas, Marvin and Ernest Jr.; and a sister, Joy.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald, of the home; four children, Rhonda Moore, Ballard, Michael Crisp, Stockton, Jacklyn Jones, Archie, and Daniel Crisp, Hollister; three brothers, Bud Ford, Jack Ford and Terry Ford; and a sister, Betty Jo Martin, all of Archie; nine grandchildren, Jonas and Brittany Jones, Garrett, Jacob and Ethan Crisp, Alan and Jessica Moore and Patrick and Matthew Crisp; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren, Jona Jones, Brittany Jones, Garrett Crisp, Jacob Crisp, Ethan Crisp, Alan Moore, Jessica Moore, Patrick Crisp and Matthew Crisp.
Memorial services were Jan. 27 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, with Pastor Ted Graham officiating.
Music was provided by Garrett Crisp, Rhonda Moore, Bud Ford, Jack Ford and David Crook.
Burial was in the Johnstown Cemetery, Montrose, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.
Contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
Dorothy Margaret Ellis

Dorothy Margaret Ellis, 89, Harrisonville, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville.
She was born Nov. 5, 1917, in Hancock County, Ill., the daughter of Ralph W. and Jessie E. (Thompson) Ogilvie.
On Sept. 14, 1946, she married Donald Francis Ellis in Kansas City.
Mrs. Ellis graduated from Carthage, Ill., High School and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill.
She worked as a bookkeeper with her husband, Don, when he first went into business for himself and later they bought Leo’s Television Sales and Service in Grandview.
Mrs. Ellis was a member and treasurer of the Crusader Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.
Dorothy was also a volunteer for the Harrisonville Thrift Store and was an active member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church.
She had lived in Harrisonville for the last 35 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Donald, on Nov. 3, 2004.
Surviving are a son, Paul Ellis, Harrisonville; a daughter, Linda Drysdale, Independence; two grandsons, Joe Valenciano and Torren Wolf; and a great-granddaughter, Amy Wolfe.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 3 at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Asher McDaniel officiating.
Cremation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
