Orbie Woodrow Farnsworth
March 7, 1913 - Oct. 5, 2000
Orbie Woodrow Farnsworth, 87, Pleasant Hill, died Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born March 7, 1913, in Quick City, the son of Samuel Allen and Birtie Rockhill (Hixon) Farnsworth.
Mr. Farnsworth graduated from Holden High School.
On Sept. 8, 1937, he married Virginia Elizabeth Rector in Warrensburg.
He was employed at the Bendix plant in Kansas City for over 23 years prior to retiring in the late 1970s.
He was also a farmer and hauled livestock and grain for others in addition to driving the Cass County library van.
Mr. Farnsworth lived on a farm near Blairstown before moving to a farm west of Pleasant Hill.
In 1954, he moved to town 16 years ago.
He was a member of the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
He was active in the tape ministry of the church and enjoyed delivering audio tapes of each Sunday's worship service to shut-ins and those in nursing facilities.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Clifton Farnsworth, in 1967.
Surviving are two sons, Orbie Gale Farnsworth and Gary William Farnsworth, both of Pleasant Hill; three brothers, Paul Allen Farnsworth, Pleasant Hill, Fern Farnsworth, Independence, and Gilbert Farnsworth, Tatamy, Pa.; three sisters, Sylvia Jordan, Parkville, Madge Bohannon, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Wanda Wiskur, Hughesville; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers were Mark Farnsworth, Don Ward, Keith Farnsworth, Norm Conant, Todd Burris and Harold Dean Jordan.
Services were Monday, Oct. 9, at the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church under the direction of the Stanley & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Wyatt shanks officiating.
Burial was in the Farnsworth Cemetery, Holden, under the direction of Stanley & Son Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Farnsworth Cemetery Association.

Letha Lucille Garoutte
March 3, 1924 - Oct. 4, 2000
Letha Lucille Garoutte, 76, Adrian, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler.
She was born March 3, 1924, in Centerview, the daughter of Edward and Rosetta Raynes.
June 1, 1941, she married Bert Garoutte in Harrisonville.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Bert Garoutte; a brother, Carl Raynes; and two sisters, Mary Miller, Peculiar, and Velma Garoutte, Marionville.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Cochran, Adrian, and Nancy Nickerson, Doniphan; two sons, Bert Garoutte Jr., Waverly, and Franklin Garoutte, Creole Springs, Ill.; three brothers, Clarence Raynes and Vernon Raynes, Independence, and John Raynes, Adrian; two sisters, Rosa Lee Roberts, Oak Grove, Betty Denny, Newport News, Va.; a brother-in-law, Elmer Wayne Garoutte, Marionville; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Casketbearers were Clint Nickerson, Brian Garoutte, Travis Cumpton, Vernon Miller II, Mikel Cumpton and Larry Roberts II.
Services were Friday, Oct. 6, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, with the Rev. Paul Burhart of the Adrian Christian Church officiating.
Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Henry Floyd Hertzberg
Sept. 29, 1907 - Oct. 2, 2000
Henry Floyd Hertzberg, 93, Harrisonville, died Monday, Oct. 2, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville.
He was born Sept. 29, 1907, in Prairie Home, Cooper County, the son of Henry and Laura (Hornbeck) Hertzberg.
On June 10, 1931, he married Lelah Hammontree.
Mr. Hertzberg had lived in Harrisonville since 1935 before moving to Stockton where he worked as the deputy county collector.
After moving to Harrisonville in 1935, he worked for several years at a Kansas City Star route carrier between Harrisonville and Clinton. Later, he went into the auto supply business, retiring in 1969 as the owner/operator of Midwest Auto Store in Harrisonville.
Mr. Hertzberg was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon since 1939.
On Aug. 4, 1992, he married Zona Leavell Gaston.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife of 59 years, Lelah Hammontree Hertzberg; and two brothers, Robert Hertzberg and Herman Hertzberg.
Surviving are his wife of eight years, Zona Gaston Leavell Hertzberg, Harrisonville; a son, Dale Hertzberg, Buckner; a daughter, Laura Dillingham, Shawnee, Kan.; three stepdaughters, Joy Steele, Belton, Maisie Cavanah, Harrisonville, and Theresa Bryson, Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Lawrence Hertzberg, Nevada, and Cecil Hertzberg, El Dorado Springs; three sisters, Viola Hazelwood, Ruth Bausch and Rachel Benham, all of El Dorado Springs; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Honorary casketbearers were the deacons of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville.
Casketbearers were Doug Dillingham, Wyatt Hazelwood, Don Hertzberg, Burlan Sizemore, Scott Aladeen and Montie Faught.
Services were Friday, Oct. 6, at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with the Rev. Charles Sutton and the Rev. David Noble of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville, officiating. Misti Gile was the vocalist.
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville.

Joyce C. Gates
June 24, 1944 - Oct. 6, 2000
Joyce C. Gate, 56, Pleasant Hill, died Friday, Oct. 6, at the Medical Center of Independence.
She was born June 24, 1944, in Florence, S.C., the daughter of Warren and Pauline (Sparks) Brown.
On Jan. 26, 1979, she married Merle D. Gates in Miami, Okla.
As a small child she moved with her family to Santa Rosa and then to the Kansas City - Raytown area.
She attended school in Raytown and graduated from Raytown High School.
She later moved to Independence and lived there and in Kansas City until 1983 when they moved to Pleasant Hill.
Mrs. Gates was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Union Church of Strasburg.
Surviving are her husband, Merle D. Gates, of the home; three sons, Michael D. Gates, Strasburg, Mark D. Gates, Burnsville, Minn., and Kent Melson, Pryor Creek, Okla.; a daughter, Jodi N. Talbot, Independence; her mother, Pauline Brown, Raytown; one brother, Warren Franklin, Brown, Raytown; and four grandchildren.
Casketbearers were Kent A. Melson, Jodie N. Talbot, Mike D. Gates, Mark D. Gates, Kent Johnson and Dick Heberlin.
Services were Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Wallace Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill with the Rev. John Clark officiating.
Burial was in the Strasburg Cemetery under the direction of the Wallace Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.

Daniel Lee Ketchum
May 26, 1944 - Oct. 7, 2000
Daniel Lee Ketchum, 56, Lampe, died Saturday, Oct. 7, at his home after a long bout with cancer.
He was born May 26, 1944, in Kansas City, the son of Robert Ketchum and Patricia (Rouse) Norman.
In 1977, he married Connie Jane Flanary.
Mr. Ketchum served in the United States Navy.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Cove Catholic Church and a third-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gabriel Seth.
Mr. Ketchum retired from Ford Motor Company, Claycomo, after 30 years and moved to the Ozarks where he worked at Silver Dollar City.
Surviving are his wife, Connie Jane Ketchum, of the home; his father, Robert Ketchum, Harrisonville; his mother and stepfather, Patricia R. and Dwight Norman, Harrisonville; two sons, Steven Allen Ketchum, Grandview, and Jacob Cain Larsen, Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Amanda Rose Ketchum, Springfield; two sisters, Pamela J. Brown, Lee's Summit, and Paulette Erickson, Gig Harbor, Wash.; two brothers, R. David Ketchum, Independence, and Mark Barrand, Highland Ranch, Colo.; five stepbrothers and stepsisters; and a granddaughter.
Memorial services will be at noon, Monday, Oct. 16, in Our Lady of the Cove Catholic Church, Kimberling City, with Father John Brath officiating.
Cremation.
Inurnment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home-South, Kimberling City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tri-Lakes Animal Shelter, HC 2 Box 184, Reeds Springs, MO 65737.

Eloise Gertrude "Toby" Roberts
Oct. 3, 1925 - Oct. 5, 2000
Eloise Gertrude "Toby" Roberts, 75, Belton, died Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Beautiful Savior Home Manor, Belton.
She was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Franklin, Ohio, the daughter of Glenn and Mable (Baxter) Tobin.
On Oct. 19, 1957, she married Bill Roberts in Las Vegas, Nev.
Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker. She had lived in Santa Anna and San Bernardino, Calif., before moving to Belton in 1992.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Roberts of the home; two sons, Larry Fox and Harry Fox, both of Huber Heights, Ohio; a daughter, Susan Fischer, La Palma, Calif.; two brothers, Leroy Tobin, San Diego, Calif., and Lloyd Tobin, Henderson, Nev.; two sisters, Mildred Robinson, Ridgecrest, Calif., Calif., and Margaret Gordon, Palmdale, Calif.; her stepmother, Mary Stiles, Palmdale; and three grandchildren.
Services were Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with Chaplain Mary Hardy-Hancock officiating.
Burial was in the Washington Cemetery, Republic, Kan.
