Chester Harold Shelton, 98, Butler, died Saturday, Nov. 4, at Medica Lodge of Butler.
He was born April 16, 1902, near Merwin in Bates County, the son of Daniel Harold and Jennie Clarissa (Larned) Shelton.
On Oct. 20, 1924, he married Freda Mae Davidson.
Mr. Shelton helped build the Adrian Lake in the 1930s with his team of horses. He was a lifetime farmer.
In 1997, at age 95, he would ride his grandson's four wheeler back into the pasture to cut thistles. He served as the Shawnee Township assessor for a number of years.
Mr. Shelton was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He served as a Sunday school superintendent for 30 plus years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Freda Mae Shelton; two brothers, Ernest Shelton and Lacy Shelton; a sister, Alice Cumpton; two sons-in-law, Vernon Morrow and Mike Walsh; and a granddaughter-in-law, Gail Morrow.
Surviving are a daughter, Von Etta Morrow Walsh, Butler; a sister, Josephine Carver, Butler; a brother, Russell Shelton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandsons; 13 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Gary Morrow, Lonnie Morrow, Randy Morrow, Keith Morrow, Kevin Morrow and Darrin Morrow.
Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, with the Rev. Robert Clyde of the United Methodist Church, Adrian, and Mr. Olivet officiating. Evelyn Morrow was the vocalist and Kathleen Stephens was the organist.
Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.
Edward Orville Todd

Edward "Bub" Orville Todd, 76, Peculiar, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City.
He was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Seymour, Webster County, the son of Roy Edward and Pearl Blanch (Gurney) Todd.
April 25, 1943, he married Genevieve Lee Helms in Marshfield.
Mr. Todd moved to Peculiar in 1959. He worked for Beyers Crushed Rock in Kansas City for 27 years before retiring in 1986.
He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 101, Kansas City.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Robert Edward Todd, Sept. 21, 1996; and a granddaughter, Sherry Snead, Oct. 29, 2000.
Surviving are his wife, Genevieve Todd, of the home; four sons, Orville Dean Todd, Larry Eugene Todd, Doyle Lynn Todd and Keith Dale Todd, all of Peculiar; three daughters, Janice Brewster, Rich Hill, Donna Schrock, Amsterdam, and Gayla Mills, Peculiar; a sister, Veda Beck, Mansfield; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were Orville Todd, Keith Todd, Jeff Mills, Phil Schrock, Terry Brewster and Billy Joe Minor.
Services were Friday, Nov. 3, at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with the Rev. Charles Sutton officiating.
Burial was in the Glenwild Cemetery, Cleveland, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Jessie Hayes Willhoite
March 25, 1898 - Nov. 3, 2000
Jessie Hayes Willhoite, 102, died Friday, Nov. 3, at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home, Adrian.
She was born March 25, 1898, in Merwin, the daughter of Joseph L. and Stella Euans Hayes.
March 25, 1961, she married John F. Long, Drexel.
June 9, 1974, she married Wayne L. Willhoite, Drexel.
Mrs. Willhoite was a member of the Christian Church in Merwin and was the pianist for 15 years. She began playing there at the age of 11. In 1924, she moved to Kansas City and transferred her membership to the Roanoke Christian Church.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Swope Park Chapter #520, Kansas City, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Drexel and the Bates County Auxiliary of Veterans of World War I Barracks 623, Butler.
Mrs. Willhoite worked in the billing department of the George A. Breon Company in Kansas City for many years. When the company sold to the Sterling Drug Company she went with the firm to New York City for a month to help organize the office there.
After returning to Kansas City, she worked for the B.F. Ascher Company from 1950 until she retired in 1961.
After moving to Drexel, she transferred to the Drexel Christian Church were she was pianist and organist for 25 years.
Preceding her in death were her first husband, John F. Long, April 6, 1970; and her second husband, Wayne L. Willhoite, Nov. 19, 1980.
Surviving are four stepsons, Wilber Willhoite, Wellsville, Gordon Willhoite, Hillsboro, Dave Willhoite, Harrisonville, Phil Willhoite, Junction City, Kan.; their children and grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Drexel Christian Church with the Rev. Troy Hoffman officiating. Melissa Grove was the organist and soloist.
Burial was in the West Point Cemetery, Amsterdam, under the direction of the Runyan Funeral Home, Drexel.
Hester Marie Vowels

Hester Marie Vowels, 75, Harrisonville, formerly of Pleasant Hill, died Saturday, Nov. 4, at Crown Care Center.
She was born April 24, 1925, in Pleasant Hill, the daughter of Jack R. and Cecil Marie (Johnson) Webber.
May 12, 1956, she married Maurice R. Vowels in Kansas City.
Mrs. Vowels attended grade school and high school in Pleasant Hill. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the Bertha Rebekah Lodge #31 of Pleasant Hill.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cecil Marie Bradshaw, March 22, 2000; and her husband, Maurice Vowels, Feb. 6, 1997.
Surviving are a brother, Robert Curtis Webber, Harrisonville; and a sister, Patricia Ann Dyke, Lee's Summit.
Graveside services were Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jon Spalding officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wallace Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.
Alva Morris Goddard
Alva Morris Goddard, 75, Archie, died Monday, Dec. 4, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Everett Community Church, near Archie.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Cremation.

Dorothy May Gillespie

Dorothy May "Dottie" Gillespie, 65, Pleasant Hill, died Friday, Nov. 29, at her home.
She was born April 10, 1935, in Calhoun, the daughter of Thomas and Della (Parks) Chipman.
On April 10, 1955, she married George Ervin Gillespie in Harrisonville.
Mrs. Gillespie graduated from Calhoun High School. She had lived in Clinton and Harrisonville before moving to Pleasant Hill in 1970.
She worked at AT&T in Lee’s Summit prior to her retirement in 1991. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Harrisonville.
Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her husband, George Ervin Gillespie in 1983.
Surviving are a son, George Thomas Gillespie, Albert Lee, Minn.; a daughter, Tina Irene Damron, Marble Falls, Calif., and Robert Eugene Chipman, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, the Rev. Della Irene Davis, Mission, Texas.
Cremation.
No funeral service scheduled.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Stanley & Son Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
Carl Earl Hoffman
Carl Earl Hoffman, 76, Warsaw, formerly of Harrisonville, died Monday, Dec. 4, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville. A Masonic service will be at 10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
